Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, is the most populous city in Central Asia, and this market manages to pack an impressive amount into its aisles, though mostly dominated by their incredible hot bar. They took over a former Walgreens space, so it's not huge for a supermarket but they have a robust hot buffet and salad bar, and it's especially packed on weekends with people coming for the plov and golubtsi. When the food is this good, you brave the crowds. Prices run high, like a carton of blueberries is nearly $10, so I'd stick to shopping elsewhere for everyday staples. But there's a lot here you simply can't get unless you make a trip to Brighton Beach, and if you're anything like me, your eyes will get bigger than your stomach. So much looks amazing. I'm actually glad it's busy, because the turnover is constant and nothing sits out for long. The spread is impressive: salads galore, excellent plov, chicken sausage prepared so many ways. One of my favorite discoveries was golubtsi, which is cabbage stuffed with chicken sausage and full of flavor. Another highlight was a salad made with charred, fried eggplant, each piece fresh and crispy. One thing to know before you go is that every buffet item is priced differently, and you're asked not to mix items in the same container, otherwise you'll be charged by weight for the most expensive thing in it. If you're a sampler like me, you'll end up with a whole stack of containers: two dumplings here, a little plov there, a scoop of salad in another. It's a little unwieldy and i wish for them to come up with a better system. This is a smaller version of the larger market in Brighton Beach or Forest Hills, but if that's too far a trek, we've got one right here in the city.

Who knew a grocery store counter could have such good food! Of course, Tashkent is no ordinary grocery store. Maybe half the store if not more is occupied by buffet bars with a vast array of hot and cold prepared foods and desserts from a surprising number of cuisines (I saw a sushi casserole and Indian-style curry among them). But you're probably coming for the Central Asian/Eastern European food, and that's what I went for. I first knew I had to get a slice of the medovyk, or honey cake, after having it at Veselka once and loving it. Then I went for the plov, which is a personal favorite of mine and also perhaps Tashkent's most famous dish. The plov isn't self-serve like the other dishes, perhaps so people don't just take the meat and leave the rice behind, but the workers take care to give you a fair balance of meat, veggies, and rice. I saw that the usual serving containers for the plov were quite big for my appetite and requested a smaller cup, which the worker behind the counter graciously accommodated. The checkout line moves fast and altogether my lunch and dessert only cost $12. Be aware that if you accept a bag it's an extra charge and one of those big hulking tote bags, and for my small takeout meal I should have went without. There doesn't appear to be seating but Washington Square Park is a short walk away if it's a nice day. The plov was delicious and easily among the best I had. You get a generous portion of tender slow-cooked meat that you can tear apart with a spoon, and even the rice is so flavorful you won't mind eating every grain. The cake was also just as I hoped, moist and creamy with a clear honey flavor without being too sweet. If I lived or worked nearby, I'd be happy to be a regular at Tashkent!

Food/drinks: yum! Really loved the spinach mint filled options! I will definitely be coming back, there were too many options to choose from but not enough belly space Atmosphere: very busy and packed especially on the weekends! But love the grocery and hot bar options! The aisles are small so it's easy to get cramped Service: fast and friendly! Price: cheap!

I can confirm all delicious and would get again, particularly the Honey Cake w Condensed Milk (you had me at Condensed Milk)

I stumbled onto this place after I had lunch in West Village and was just walking around. I always like to check out specialty food markets, so I went in to take a peek. Wow, I was overwhelmed with the extensive selection of cold & hot bar options and bakery delights. They offer central Asian, Slavic, Turkish, and Soviet foods. It was all rows and rows of eye candy to me! I mentally marked this place to grab lunch next time & take to nearby Washington Square Park to eat and watch the romping mix of humanity that runs through that fun park.

I've had this place bookmarked for a while and finally made it last week. There has never been a store with a more appealing food buffet. All the foods look extremely aesthetically pleasing. Makes you just wanna try everything. I took a stroll around the entire store to get the lay of the land while simultaneously making mental notes of what I might get. I ended up with a bit of everything to try. My standouts were the mini dumplings and beef kebab. The rest of my haul was decent. Didn't love the pastries. Buckwheat bread was good. The prices were reasonable. Will def return to try more things.

Really unique spot with a TON of delicious looking ethnic food. If you want unique produce as well as a great selection of prepared foods, this is the spot to go to.

Waited so long for this market to open and I had no idea this would be plov heaven in the city! The salad bar, bakery, plov, everything was amazing and the selection is graaaaand. Absolutely enjoyed everything here. Hardest part was selecting enough variety in one-go (best kind of challenges lol). But really, the plov is on-point. I've been to Uzbekistan and had all sorts of plov and this was the closest and most authentic I could find in the city (haven't ventured out to queens or bk to try). Service is quick and friendly. But my goodness the selection is amazing here. Loved it all. Great job guys!

There is a lot of hot food abd easy pick up options here. I got a piece of roast beef, beef samsa and chicken plov. There are so many food options. It's nothing overwhelming and exciting. The roast beef was tasty: hot, salty and soft with a light bite to it. The beef samsa was cold but the bread of it was tasty. It was crispy, flaky and layered. It wasn't stuffed with meat but it was a good amount. A bit salty but a good snack. I would get it again. It's a clean big supermarket. No special decorations but I like the layout. Service was fine. Some staff friendlier than others. I do wish their was more organization with the line but it's a tight area. Would come again and but some new products.

European butters priced at under $6. Small loaves of multigrain breads at $1.75. This was Tashkent Supermarket which opened earlier this year. Age and I went to see it and were pleasantly surprised by the prices and quality of this Uzbek market. From vegetables to diary, biscuits and the array of freshly prepared foods we had not seen such a spread. Both of us bought a few items. I liked the butters as I like to bake. Service was friendly and efficient. On the next visit, I made a beeline for the butters again and the breads. I wish I lived nearer so this would be easier to shop. However with the tariffs I wonder if the prices are still so low?

I'm a fan of Tashkent! Right off the West 4th St subway stop, Tashkent is a grocery store that sells a variety of ready to eat foods and grocery items. I've tried many of their hot and cold foods, and some of my favorites include the plov (rice dish) and salmon salad (like salmon poke with rice and avocado). The mini dumplings are pretty good as well though they are a little oily. The workers are helpful if you have any questions or want to know what the ingredients are. The store is pretty clean as well. No seating inside though but very close to Washington Square Park for a nice outdoor picnic.

Such a bright spot on the corner of West 4th station that's normally quite dingy - this supermarket is warm and inviting and you immediately feel at home when you enter. It was bustling when I visited on a Friday at 9PM and there was so many people ordering made to order wraps, as well as people choosing from the widest range of hot and chilled foods I've seen in a while. My absolute favorite Uzbek dish is lamb plov and I wanted to grab some samsas and other prepared foods but I had already had dinner and needed to prioritize the plov! You have to ring a bell to get their attention but then you can just let them know which protein and how much ($9.99 per pound). He didn't really seem to hear me but I ended up with 1.24lbs for $12.39. I brought it home to try and it was a 10/10! So flavorful with the stewed veggies and you can add a hard boiled egg at home. I could def see 1lb being 2 portions. I'll definitely be back!

Brighton Beach mega mart opens in the village. I have a soft spot for this food having grown up near Brighton beach where this style of Uzbeckestan/ Russian food is very common. . This store is smaller than Bk but the flavors are big. I enjoyed the fish, chicken wing and the cheese pelemi was incredible! It's all about the buffets & hopefully less rules than Brooklyn & happy they're here.

Tashkent Supermarket in W. Village delicious curated selection ranges from inexpensive fare to more gourmet like smoked fish and caviar!
    Mike R.

Absolutely a SUPER market! A fan of the Brighton Beach Tashkent Supermarket, excited to finally shop at this closer W. Village location. While it's about 1/4 the size of the original store, the Tashkent Supermarket team has wisely curated a selection of delicious items, mostly not widely available in Manhattan, that range from tasty affordable, less expensive fare to more gourmet like a range of smoked fish and caviar. Check out their exceptional freshly prepared foods that span ethnic cuisines from Eastern Europe to Central Asia (not only from Tashkent like your Buvi - a.k.a. Uzbek grandmother - used to make), as well as some Indian items! You'll want to get there earlier than later, because (as I experienced with their soups seeking their house borscht and lagman to take home) when they run out for the day you'll have to come back tomorrow! Savory baked selection includes Burekas, Georgian style Khachapuri with Cheese, Bichak, and awesome Kutabi, i.e., an Azerbaijani pancake filled with greens and herbs. You'll also find Mantu and Pelmeni ready to go! Buffet items sold by the pound include Beef Brisket and Homemade NY Strip Loin, various Chicken dishes, Tashkent Style Norin, multiple Salmon and Basa options, Stuffed Peppers and Cabbage, Dolmas, non-meat options, and assorted salads. They even have beautifully prepared whole Branzini for $15.99. Pre-packaged items included blintzes and reasonably priced gourmet sandwiches. Did I mention their fantastic Homemade Pickled Tomatoes and Cabbage? And Sour Pickles to gobble down at $2.99 per lb.? Not everything in Tashkent's prepared foods has a description of what's in it, (something I suggest they add,) so you may have to do a search. For example, I took home the colorful Shuba Salad, layered with hard boiled egg crumbles and beet and mayo filling to discover one of the other ingredients is herring - although not a problem for me! You'll find unusual imported cheeses and cold cuts, perfect for Tashkent's exceptional fresh breads, which they can slice in store for you! The delicious Darnitskiy Mini Bread (see pic) I bought reminded me of Finnish rye breads that I love - dense and sour! Plus their Homemade Pastries look perfect for a sweet tooth! Tashkent also has a worthwhile produce section to visit and a good dairy section! (Yes, they even have eggs in stock, albeit pricey.) Their center aisle shelves also include imported items, like Ukrainian Borsch actually made in Ukraine - Slava Ukraini! All in all, don't just take my word... explore Tashkent Supermarket yourself! If you go in hungry, you should certainly find something worthwhile to enjoy!
