Praise the LARD! Stumbled upon this place by seeing the words EMPANADAS on the window. Once I saw those words, I walked straight inside and ordered myself one. I did enjoy my breakfast empanada very much but the chicken one was definitely my favorite. It came with a chimichurri type sauce that just brought the already flavorful empanada to another level. The acid/garlic from the sauce was able to brighten up the heavier filling and crust. Let's talk about the crust for a second. It was so flaky, melt in your mouth texture! We did get to try the beef empanada as they gave it to us on accident instead of the chicken. All three were delicious and next time I would love to try their quiches or homemade soups! read more

As we were on vacation at the NJ shore, took a long drive through various beach towns and noticed the Sunburst Bakery. After reading a lot of convincing reviews, decided to stop early on our way out of town for the peach scone (a bit of almond extract would elevate the fruit) and the artichoke, goat cheese, tomato and asparagus quiche. It was substantial and really creamy. And the pie crusts are homemade, tender and flaky. Added two small pies: the key lime was my absolute flavorite, creamy and just the right lime flavor without tasting too sour. Although it collapsed on the way home, it was just the right true lime taste without being bitter. I've had many versions of key lime pie, even in the Keys and this was my fave! The other banana chocolate features a pie crust lined in chocolate, loaded with layered bananas, crème topping and drizzled chocolate. Next trip, I'm trying more specialty treats! Fruit pies are exceptional partly because of the crust. Yes their hours are a little restrictive because they sell out of pies. This is a one man show. If you have an urge for pie, get there before noon or you risk being shut out. The day I went, they had 1 apple, 1 apple crum, 1 pecan, 1 mini short rib and cheese whipped potato (I bought it, yum) and 1 lemon meringue full size. They will have dozens of pies at 10:00. First visit to Sunburst Pie this past Saturday. I bought a mini chocolate cream pie, a mini apple pie, and a slice of quiche. The quiche was supposed to be spinach and feta - at least that's what the girl told me it was, I was surprised to learn there was bacon in the quiche after my first bite, I'm a vegetarian. Needless to say, she should have mentioned the bacon. That being said, the pies were very good, enjoyed the thick homemade crust. The chocolate cream pie was decadent as you can see in my photos. The apple pie was so good, the filling could stand to be a drop sweeter. The prices are a little high here, but you're getting as close to home baked as possible here. So my boss recommended this place to me one day and mentioned that if they had the empanadas to get one. I am so happy I did! This is the pork roll, egg and cheese and it is amazing! I've been a loyal customer for 5 years and have recommended many people to this shop, but I can't bring myself to go back there again. The owner Jay spoke to me a few times, both on the phone and in person, in such a nasty manner that I have finally had it with being abused for spending a lot of money at his establishment. At first, I attributed it to being stressed over the number of orders he has to produce during the holidays, but his abrasive and rude attitude carries over to other non-holiday days. I've been told by other people I referred to his shop, that he was also very nasty to them, and they have stopped patronizing his business. I realize and understand that we don't know the personal struggles people might have, but when in business there needs to be some sort of courtesy extended to the people that support your business. Aside from his offensive attitude, when you dare ask a question about a product you really love, he has more than once complained about the price of the items required to make it. I wish I could continue to shop there, because his products are delicious, but I think I owe it to myself not to be battered by him any longer. read more

This is going to boarder on GUSHING but this place is GOLDEN. I took home a slice of spinach feta quiche, a mini blueberry pie and a hearty chicken pot pie. Everything was amazing! The quiche was savory with a delicious crust. The blueberry pie was one of the best I ever tasted with just enough tartness to make it perfect and again the crust was so great! The chicken pot pie was jam packed with tons of chicken and fresh vegetables and you guessed it oh that crust! I'm here to say gooooo to Sunburst Pies and treat yourself to food definitely made with love and pride. This is an awesome find. Talking with a server at comitted pig about pie and she tells us to go here. Best find. Where do I begin. I missed it a few times trying to get there because they are not open late but worth getting to finally. I called and asked if they had banana cream pies and could I get extra banana. One hour later the most amazing banana cream pie and as if it was no big deal to make for me but it truly was an amazing pie and they we're so kind about the request. I left with chocolate banana, chocolate cream, berry, scones and insanely unique empanadas in little boxes with accompanying sauces. This place has so much more and the owner is so so kind and happy to please us. He deserves the credit for above and beyond. He cares about the quality he serves. And it shows. I am so in love with this place. I rarely eat scones or pies because few get the texture of crust right! Tender but flakey is a science. This guy nails it every time. I live an hour away but make excuses to come to Manasquan just to visit Sunburst. So far I've had the dessert pies, scones, pot pies, Shepard's pie and quiches. I prefer everything warmed in the oven to get the perfect crust consistency. Therefore, the cream based pies weren't a home run for me because when refrigerated the crust loses its charm. Today I brought home a cup of the Cajun shrimp soup. Is there nothing the cook/owner can't accomplish? It was spectacular!! You can tell when someone loves his job. Amazing apple pie and empanadas! The secret is lard in the crust but it sure is good. We loved the mini apple pie so much that we went back and got a mini apple crumb pie, also fabulous. Flaky, flavorful crust and delicious apples. We got a full size blueberry peach pie which was a little disappointing. Fruit didn't seem cooked enough (odd texture) and more liquid inside than I'd like. But those empanadas.... The spicy ground beef with raisins is addictive. My husband and daughter's favorite was the caramelized pineapple shredded pork one. They may not look large but are so rich that it's wise to share one. When I arrived, I was overwhelmed with choices, so I asked for recommendations. The girls at the counter told me that the key lime is popular. Next most popular is the chocolate. So I got one small pie of each. I was tempted to try a mini of all the flavors, but I held back and decided that one more mini would suffice. I love apple pie, but I am hesitant to buy it from a bakery because my mother-in-law's apple pie is hard to beat. Well, I caved and ordered a mini of the apple as well.
