OK..I know the owner can be grumpy,BUT when it really matters, she is a very kind person who will do whatever she can to be helpful. Not only does she have every imaginable light bulb, but she has an incredible amount of knowledge about all of them, and lighting in general. This place is often busy, and that is when it is harder to get the great service you get when it is not. The bottom line is, these folks are honest and helpful, and incredibly knowldegeable. My most recent experience was the one that pushed me to write this review. I had purchased a number of expensive bulbs for a fixture at home that turned out to be no good anymore. I could not get back in to the store withing their 15 day return window.When I finally made it back in a month later and told the owner the story, she was very kind and immediately offered to return my money, with no hesitation. She then gave me some great advice to keep in mind when going to replace the fixture. We can all be grumpy and it is too bad that sometimes the owner directs this at her customers. However, she is a good hearted person, and way worth supporting.I am so happy to be able to support this local, Portland business! read more

This is the Powell's of light bulbs. The selection of bulbs is nothing short of amazing, and they have a modest assortment of lamp parts as well if you're building something (although Wink's Hardware is a bit more comprehensive in this regard). Owner Kay Newell is not one to suffer fools gladly, but if you have a legitimate question, she's quite helpful, and if you're lucky she may just dispense a bit of arcane wisdom. She's spent the past twenty-odd years becoming a guru of lighting, and as others have noted, she's something of a "character"... Sunlan has definitely earned its place on my "Why I live in Portland" list. read more

I stopped by here bc of the high reviews. I'm from So Cal and the pictures look pretty cool. They have lots of unique light bulb. Like really cool one you may not find at home. Ancient knces to hippy cheesy ones your parents would get. Lol. I didn't get any since I'm flying home and can't pack this fragile item. But they are off a strip that is worth checking out. This has to be the nicest and perhaps most complete lightbulb store on the planet. I found some great shape, sizes and colors of bulbs today in a variety of wattage levels. Also I got a wonderful color changing fiberoptic night light and spotted other very unusual bulbs. Suffice it to say that I had to get a special container to transport all the bulbs I bought back to my hometown on a plane tomorrow. If you are looking for a hard to find bulb, or just appreciate these wonderful things that are going to soon become extinct, you must check this place out. His eclectic lighting store is amazing and the staff are totally friendly, knowledgable, and helpful. Kay at the front desk is amazing and the guys at the back counter went the extra mile trying to diagnose the problem with my light. There are so many wacky bulbs & all things related to lights here that this is the type of store I hope will be in business forever! It was fun to walk in and around and look are the literally thousands of lights they have. We picked up some edison bulbs (they have over 10 kinds of just those!). Kay was exceptionally helpful and informative while I shopped around. There are several displays where customers can test out different types of "white" light, and Kay encouraged me to see what the writing in my notebook looked like under each one, the heat I felt on my hand, etc., and I realized how many subtle features really go in to making the right purchase for home lighting. I left knowing I would be back for future purchases. This local business has been around since 1989, and it only takes a short visit to see why. I was having a difficult time finding bulbs for my outdoor security light. It was a small bulb the plugged in which was something I had never dealt with before. I went into a hardware store and they gave me a card to this place and said that this person "the bulb lady" would have whatever I needed. I called since she was across town and explained I needed a particular bulb with a G8 pin base. The person that answered took a few minutes and came back to the phone and said sure they carried that bulb. I asked if they would mail it to me, no problem he said. I received the bulbs in two days. When I opened the package,. The bulbs were a pin base GY8. I called and was told this was the same as the G8. I argued and the"bulb lady" got snoty and said it was the same and if I wanted to return them I could. The next morning I made the trek across town, took the bulbs in and she gave me credit for the purchase but refused to give me credit for the postage. Horrible experience, horrible woman. I don't care if it was the last light shop in town I would NEVER buy anything from her again read more

I picked out the light bulb I want, paid. Drove home only to find that there was no lightbulb in the box. Darn, kept receipt though!! Should be an easy return, right? I live in deep SE so making a quick trip to Mississippi is everything but quick. Eventually I make it back about a month later, bring my empty box and receipt. The lady at the counter refuses to either a) refund my money or b) give me another lightbulb because I'm outside of their 15 day window. Well I'm not returning a lightbulb - I just simply want the one I fucking paid for. She said people steal light bulbs and come back for the money. I've got better things to do than to steal a $5 lightbulb. After arguing she so kindly offers for me to buy another lightbulb at half price. Nope, it's the principle. I pointed out that the price she was charging for the light bulb I was buying was $2.00 more than the price listed at the display. After admiring their window displays each time I walk by, I finally needed a very specific light bulb and stopped in. Took me over five minutes of waiting to get assistance from the staff as the place had at least 5 other shoppers. He found my bulb and walked me up to the front counter where I stood and stood and stood and stood, waiting for the woman at the register to finish an order with new seasons. It's great that a local biz like new seasons supports other local businesses but jeez, can't that type of transaction be performed in the back rather than at the only register???? Finally after standing there for what seemed like an eternity, I decided to leave my bulbs there and my sanity in tact. Not once did the cashier even acknowledge my presence or make an attempt to multi-task while going over her order. The Lightbulb Store! I vividly remember walking by this store on one of my first days in Portland. Apart from being astounded by the overwhelmingly tacky window display, I was impressed that there exists a store entirely devoted to the lightbulb. The first time you walk in (and every time thereafter) you are greeted with the question "how can we light up your life?" Oh Sunlan, let me count the ways. My favorite bulbs are the pricey Edison bulbs; you have to love the teardrop clear glass and the soft glow of carbon filament. I have also bought several colors of flood bulbs here; I will bathe my house in color until I drown in it. This store also boasts several styles of holiday bulbs, bulbs that change color, bulbs with faeries inside, energy-efficient bulbs, and bulbs that make you happy (clinically). At the very least it's worth going inside just for the experience. This place is a Mississippi neighborhood fixture (no, they don't sell those). read more

I have walked by Sunlan many times when window shopping and always wondered what it's like inside. Well, now I know. A huge selection of almost any kind of bulb you can think of at very excellent prices. That's not even the best. The two owners, more like curators, have encyclopedic knowledge of their bulbs, which I would guess total more than a million total bulbs (thousands of styles). They are very happy to discuss your specific bulb need and make recommendations. When I realized the bulbs I purchased didn't work, they helped me get the right bulbs and processed the return as quickly as the purchase. I'm not going to bother shopping for bulbs online or anywhere else from now on. read more

Got so many things here. If you are just shopping on Miss then this place might not be the best for you.If you need electrical items for your home, its awesome. I have gotten electronic versions of ballasts here for numerous fixtures in my home, replacements. I get bulbs here all the time because standard sizes are very inexpensive. The specialty items are not cheap but cool. Low prices on standard items, cheaper than your standard home supply stores. I went down today to get a ballast for my circular 2 bulb fixture. 2 places in town had this and the other was out of stock but not Sunlan. Wish we had one in Vancouver. read more

Every time I have gone to Sunlan Lighting, I have received rude service. The store's owner (or manager?) is supposed to be some kind of light bulb guru and that may be true for some who have gone there, but two of the three times I have gone, she has sorely disappointed me. For the third and best experience that I had, when she actually did find bulbs to match the common book light I brought in, I later found out that the bulbs she sold me were wrong for the unit, resulting in very short life. What is most remarkable about this is that I eventually found the correct bulbs (with much friendlier customer service) at the very same giant corporate chain store I was trying to avoid when I went to Sunlan in the first place. If I'd gone straight there, I'd have been happier and had my needs met much quicker. This woman's approach apparently is to berate and insult anyone who wants to ask her a follow-up question, or implies that he or she might be able to pick out what they need themselves. The very last time I was there (and it will be the last, believe me) I wanted a replacement bulb for a common flashlight - the Maglite. Yes, I was surprised when she did not know what that light was, but I told her that I knew the bulb and if she could show them to me, I could pick it out. She refused to show me, saying that many bulbs look alike and that I could make a mistake. Now I don't know this woman, and we have not been talking more than a minute, and anyone who knows me, knows that I always deal with people in kindness, but when I reiterated that I knew what I was looking for, she raised her voice at me, angry apparently, and began talking down to me while other customers nearby looked on. The Maglite bulb is very distinctive I told her again; I could recognize it. And if several bulbs were similar, I was willing to take a chance, buy each and take the loss for those that did not work. No, she still would not let me see the selection, and at this point her blatant condescending tone of voice indicated to all around that either I had to be deaf or developmentally disabled. I guess perhaps she thought was trying to save me from the apparent risk of buying the wrong bulb (that costs less than a dollar). All I felt was insulted and stressed and completely convinced that I will never set foot in Sunlan again, and from this day forward will vehemently dissuade anyone else from making the same mistake. read more
