Nice lil small chicken spot. The title says sunny's sub but they were selling everything in there but subs. Most people were getting the fried chicken deal. We tried it and it was pretty good. This place is right across the street from Morgan State University.

Sunny's was a staple for me in undergrad. Currently as I am older now, it's a once in a while thing. I recently stopped in and ordered a whiting fish platter. I was not impressed with the customer service rushing me to make a selection and was rude when I had questions about the menu as the tv screens were not working at the counter top where your order. It was replaced with poster board and writing. The lobby area was being cleaned when I came in the restaurant. Unfortunately this visit was a waste of 16 bucks. I made the error or ordering potato salad which I thought would be good however it was horrible. It tasted like home-fries with mayonnaise on it. The green beans seemed old and did not taste good at all. The half and half was way too sweet and the machines were not working. My rating was 2 stars as the fish was just ok. I for sure will not return.

My husband picked up a chicken box for dinner tonight. The service was quick. The food was fresh. The fries were tasty. They do come plain, so you can add whatever you want to them. I like the cut of the fries. The chicken was very tasty. Not only the batter was good, but the flavor of the chicken. It tastes like they marinade it first. It's really good. Definitely recommend.

This is my go to "chicken box" spot! The wings are always a good size, juicy and the flavor consistent. You pick how many wings 4, 5 etc. and the boxes always come with fries. You can do regular or western fries. To me western fries are the only way to go and I get an extra sunny sauce just for them. I honestly can't speak to the rest of the menu but I hear others getting subs, fish etc. and the place stays busy so I'm sure they are equally delicious. If you drop in and the line is wrapped around don't be deterred they are fast and efficient and the food is always piping hot!!

As a graduate of THEE Morgan State University, I know all too well that Sunny's chicken is Goated. It's not up for debate. It's not a nostalgic thing. Their chicken is legit, and is consistent. Hot, crispy, seasoned to the Gods. Spots like this should be protected at all costs. I haven't been since their grand reopening, and it was better than I remembered. The restaurant was clean and inviting, and I'm glad to see there's room inside to eat-in: a significant upgrade from their last storefront. Sunny sauce also doesn't disappoint. Pull up!

Listen, if you're in east Baltimore, a student at Morgan State or a connoisseur of fried chicken, get over to Sunny's. I LOVE their chicken boxes. I have never ordered anything else(I will one day), because I love the chicken so much. It's always busy but they get you in and out pretty fast. read more

I'm not going to say they have the BEST chicken box in town for this one reason; without the sunny/Mambo sauce I've had better. The chicken is a little too salty for my liking! But their potato wedges!!! BOOM Overall you get an awesome bang for your buck! The staff are usually very friendly. Expect there to be a crowd, always. If you are near Northwood plaza and you're hungry, I recommend you visit Sunny's for a chicken box! P.s there is one that just opened up at Westside shopping center that I've been meaning to try out! read more

Guilty pleasure all the way. First of all the food is GREAT! I'm a huge fan of the cheese steak. food is freshly made. flavor is awesome. Service is just wonderful. Apparently this place has been here forever and management nor employees are jaded. They treat everyone with kindness ...and dare i say seemed genuinely happy to see their customers. i look forward to breezing through this menu! I know this place is popular but on the day that I went everything tasted old or heavily loaded and sugar. I tried the honey wings they were over sauced in a thick syrupy liquid that did not taste like honey. Also grabbed a cheesesteak which was not the worst but was just ok. seems like a popular neighborhood spot because when I went in it was super crowded. Would not go back but maybe it was a bad day. All I have to say is CHICKEN BOX!!! Lol... Sunny's, which is located by Morgan State University, is one of the best, if not the best, chicken spots in the city. I have not heard anything bad a bout this carry out. I'm addicted to the chicken and fries. Let's not forget the Half and Half (Tea & Lemonade)! I have been about 6 times in the past month or two. Took my mom to Sunnys this past weekend. She is hard to please when it comes to most food, especially chicken, but SHE LOOOOVED IT and cannot wait to go back this weekend! The chicken is fresh, hot and seasoned very well. Please Please Please...I recommend checking out Sunnys! You will not be disappointed. :) read more

I've been eating at Sonny's for 20 years! I'm never disappointed. If you want fancy and frills with no flavor this is not the place for you. But if you want clean and quaint, no place other than this. I've been vegan for 16 years and still crave their cheese steak sub! The fish is always a great contender and the fries yum yum! I use to take my daughter there for breakfast or lunch date. What great memories! read more

I LOVE this place, the honey wings are soooooo good! I've been here twice and both times there was a party in my mouth. At first when my friend took me here I was like " why am I in this hole in the wall??" but then I tasted my food nom nom nom nom. I'm from the dc area where we have chicken wings and mumbo sauce from Chinese carry out spots so I'm comparing it to Baltimore's chicken box from Sunny's. Let me say that Sunny's did not disappoint. The portions are good, the chicken is good and the sauce is good. The area is a little rough but it's the real Baltimore. Overall I recommend Sunny's. read more

Hi -- I had my friend/neighbor go over to Sunny's for a Wing/French Fry box. The chicken was good -- big/mighty wings but the fries were not. I like my fries very well done but these needed more time in the deep fryer. read more

Honey wings and regular fries are my jam! The half and halfs are good too. The service is pretty fast. This sauce is almost better than my beloved Mumbo sauce (available mainly in the DC area). The sunny sauce they have is also tasty. Sweet with a little kick! read more

I'm not from Baltimore and knew nothing about a chicken box before I moved here. I was looking for some chicken wings and stumbled upon Sunny's. It was delish!! The wedge fries are pretty awesome too...ooooh and that sauce! Super affordable. The place gets really crowded so I'm always sure to call in my order ahead of time to decrease my wait. That really does help. It's in a strip mall that can be a bit sketchy (at least two of my visits, there was an ambulance and police officers responding to some incident at the store next door). Even with that, I've never felt unsafe over there and the chicken is so amazing, so that really doesn't even matter :) read more

I've been going to Sunny's for a very long time & hurts me to my heart to have to write this. Now months ago they were closed by health department for rats. I get it being in the food industry myself. Infrastructure can allow rodents to come from the outside. But, recently I was gonna go & saw they were closed again but this time it said Unsanitary Conditions & poor food handling. Now to me that's a reflection on the staff that means people are nasty & handling our food. So, I will NEVER go back unless they get an entire NEW crew. read more

This is where all the morganites go. ( Morgan state university). The food is good the staff is cool and THE FOOD IS GOOD. I really like greasy spoons so if your a fan then I suggest this place to you. They have this thing called "sunnys sauce" which tastes good with the fried wings. When I order my food I always asks for them to fry my wings n fries hard bcuz to me it taste better that way. Other than that everything's a go. They also serve fish and lots of other dishes that may suit your taste buds so go for it! Great if you wanna sit inside, Bcuz it's enough room, although I probably wouldn't. read more

We came here because the mini is on the hunt to find the best chicken box spot in the area. Apparently she did some Google research and Sunny's kept coming up. She rated the chicken an 8 on a scale of 1-10. She opted for regular fries instead of western fries. She said the regular fries were poop. Me, the non-meat eater opted for the tilapia special with western fries (if I want regular fries, I'd cook them at home). The fries were AWESOME. The fish was decent. We decided that if we were in that end of town and she had a hankering for chicken, we'd go again but we won't go out of our way. So the hunt for the best chicken box continues... read more

I've been frequenting Sunny's since 2000. The chicken box has always been my favorite and it is still is. As of late however the customer service has gone down tremendously. At a recent visit, I was barely greeted and after my order, I was never offered my receipt. I had to ask for it and then the young man behind the counter was rude and abrasive about my request. I hope that I don't have to find a new wing spot. read more

I can't seem to get past how unclean this place is. They have ok food but afterward I feel a little sick( like, it's too heavy, or maybe the grease is bad? It sure, but I won't be go to this place anymore. They were also closed a few months ago by the city for unsanitary conditions. No bueno, Sunnys. read more

Love Sunnys. Have been coming here since I was a child. Best chicken box in Baltimore. Honey wings & regular wings delicious. Western fries just as delicious. Subs & fish are great. Love a half & half with it. Breakfast sandwiches good. The only thing I've never liked here was the rice. It's dry. No one gets the rice anyway so it doesn't matter lol read more

Over priced and bland! I ordered five chicken wings, macaroni and cheese, and string beans. The chicken was fried nicely and it was juicy but bland. You have to drown the chicken in hot sauce to taste flavor. The string beans were from a can - disgusting!!! The macaroni and cheese did not have one ounce of salt. This was literally noodles and liquid cheese food. Disgusting!!! I forced myself to eat this matter. Lastly, this venue is not in a safe or clean area. read more

In 2005 and 2007 Voted Best Chicken Box by 92Q Big Fat Morning Show. In 2009, 2010 and 2012 Baltimore City Paper "Eat Guide" Sunny's Sub was name "Great place for Chicken Box and Subs" In 2017 Sunny's Sub was voted the "Best Chicken Box" by Baltimore Sun paper.

Meet the Business Owner: Sunny H.

The owners name is Steve H, and has been the owner of Sunny's Sub since 2004. During his time at Sunny's, his chicken has been awarded Baltimore Best Chicken Box in multiple years by 92Q and City Paper. Even though the Northwood Shopping Center is old, Sunny's Sub will remain in the shopping, continue to sell the Best chicken box and return to new Northwood Shopping center after the renovation is completed.

My friend and I shared the crispy cauliflower and tahini, which was well-fried and delicious. I also appreciated their drink offerings. My friend and I had and enjoyed a couple of glasses of Lebanese Sauvignon Blanc (from Mersel Wine). I had the Farmers Market Za'atar Salad (cucumber, shaved beet, fennel, pomegranate, pickled jalapeno, mint, fried pita, baby greens, and za'atar yogurt dressing), to which I added falafel. Unfortunately, I found the salad to be quite dry (not dressed enough and then the falafel and the pita crisps just compounded that) and served in a dish that made it quite hard to eat without spilling half the salad on the table. The service was friendly but perhaps not very attentive. I got up to ask our server for the check after waiting for a bit of time for her to make her way to us. It felt like her father was giving us his blessing from beyond the grave. The oysters were phenomenal. The crab cake was amazing. The local beer was perfect on a hot day. Then it came time to pay. We were horrified when the waitress came back with the gift card and told us it was expired. Expired? There is no expiration date printed on it which means it is legally valid indefinitely. She explained that they changed POS systems since the card had been purchased (again, by my fiancé's late father before he was taken by cancer) and that the new system did not recognize it. "Sorry, there's nothing we can do." No offer to grab a manager to see if a portion of the meal could be comped. Just $100 spent by a dearly departed that Thames St Oyster House does not have to answer for. A very tender moment ruined by poor customer service. They've lost 3 repeat customers.
