Mom (now deceased, only a few weeks after leaving The Virginian (no connection, so please don't take it that way)) needed to do rehab after a hospital stay for a broken bone. The process started off well and we moved mom in due to its proximity to both my folks' assisted living apartment just up the road. From there it fell apart. She needed help being fed...that rarely happened unless I showed up and hunted someone down to do so, even though they KNEW this from the hospital discharge and said they could fully support that requirement. At one point I was actually asked to feed my mother because the staff was too busy!? Late medications, pretty much every day. Zero communication between shifts on the staff, so anything I told one staff member would never get passed along to any other members on the next shift. In fact, when I approached someone at the nurse's station (CNA I believe) to hunt down a nurse, doctor, or at least a floor manager, she gave me attitude and said it wasn't her job--wrong answer...our further "chat" yielded the proper amount of attention. Mom was also down in the very last room in the hallway and as a result rarely got any interaction with anyone coming to check on her. Only bonus was that she had a single room, until the last day when they came in and moved in another bed with no prior coordination with the family. Let's talk discharge process. The discharge team met with me and used alot of deflective language on their "ethical" duty if a patient wasn't making sufficient progress. I don't they know what ethical actually means. It's like that guy who fancies himself to be smart, then continues to misuse a $2 word. I called their bluff and got them to admit they were essentially going to kick her out but they admitted they couldn't do so unless there was a placement plan, so know your rights and rules!! There were two rays of sunshine that I will point out...Esther and Armstrong. Absolute kudos and respect to them. They were fantastic lights in an otherwise lousy experience. Stay far away from this place if you care about your loved ones.

To begin with in Total we may of saw them a total of 5 times, the doctor came and started his medications and we thought it was off to a good start but once they started his aid coming out we had to request that she didn't come because her bedside manner is terrible, she had no respect when it came to my father and tried to get in And out as fast as possible she wasn't ever there for longer than 15 minutes. When she was giving him a bath she scrubbed him so hard it left marks on him and we had to tell her multiple times to be gentle, so much so the nurse that was there one time saw how rough she was and pulled her to the side asking her to be more gentle. So after that I just continued doing everything myself instead of trusting anyone else from the company to come out because I wanted my dad to be comfortable in his final days. She was asked multiple times to bring supplies but it got to the point where we had to buy most of the stuff out of pocket. The nurse was great she went out of her way sometimes and did things she didnt have to. we had to wait almost a week for his medications because the company/pharmacy wasn't coordinated well and it was definitely difficult for him when he didn't have the medicine he needed. He was placed on intermitted care and was to have someone come out daily and always be ready for the call, well that time came and we were told to wait until 12 AM at night for them to get someone out to us, the time we called was 4 PM in the afternoon. I ended up calling an ambulance and he was transported to the hospital after severe chest pain and problems breathing, he passed away a day later in the hospital and in the following days as we told him we are planning his funerals and running around trying to do everything necessary to bury my father they called multiple times a day asking to come get the equipment after we were told it was ok to coordinate with the nurse and we already had a scheduled day to return them. The nurse was great. Everyone else, the company as a whole, needs to really be looked at and watch who they hire.

We ended up going with Capital Caring, and I am so happy we did. Our mom had been residing at the Wellington in Lake Manassas, and Capital Caring worked well with those staff. They were amazing throughout everything. Judith, the head nurse, had excellent communication.- contacting me consistently after she visited with my mother. Bob was a pastor who saw my mom regularly, which we all appreciated and also had great communication.. Gloria and Louis also did a good job with our mother. I feel like I was listened to throughout the process, and everyone was very caring and understanding. They did an excellent job helping our mom be as peaceful and pain free as possible.

Skilled nursing centers with Rehab need to be closely scrutinized and we selected this location for my mom after her stroke due to the fantastic Gym for intense rehab, the dynamic therapists, and the location near our home so we could visit often. After five weeks there, she came home stronger and confident, but there were some issues here and there that made the experience somewhat traumatic. The new administration arrived when we did, and when we returned four months later with mom's Congestive Heart Failure, it was like a a Tsunami touched on every area of deficit we had seen prior. The Administrators held themselves accountable for the concerns that we had, and in the eight days we were there in August, I can highly recommend this location. Nothing is perfect in the area of need for elderly or those recovering, but the site was very clean, the nurses were top notch and positively invested above and beyond in their patients. The therapists and the gym maintain their five star review throughout both experiences (especially the manager and PT "Jim Morales" , but a special thanks to our nurse "Taylor", who felt like part of our family when our visit over.
