If you are looking for local, Sunrise Biscuits is locally owned and operated with a location here in Chapel Hill, NC and one in Oxford, NC. They specialize in breakfast items such as biscuits, but they do also offer hot dogs and a few other lunch items. The biscuit itself is big, fluffy, soft and moist ... but if you pair it with egg and cheese, you're left wanting - there's simply not enough salt. The cheese is tasty, though not melted, and does not really add enough oomph. This is saying something, as I usually complain about too MUCH salt. The fried chicken on the other hand adds *just* the right amount of grease, crunch and flavor -- you don't need another single topping on there. The drive thru is nuts. We were pulling in from across the median and didn't have an opportunity to make the turn until someone in line coming from the opposite direction let us in. Oh myyyyyyyy gooodness!!! Easily one of the, if not, best biscuit sandwiches I have ever had the pleasure of eating. The service was incredibly fast, well priced and perfect. My husband and I added to the traffic line when we ate here for the first time this past weekend. The line moves quick and the food comes even quicker. I had the chicken biscuit and cinnamon roll and my husband had the cheddar cheese and egg biscuit and a blueberry muffin. I can say that my chicken biscuit was yummy. I think I ordered wisely and I enjoyed it however, that being said-I was not blown away by it. It really was just a biscuit with a piece of fried chicken. Well if the magic school bus was a biscuit from Sunrise, and you downed one of their southern cococtions, the biscuit would experience a similar experience. The biscuits from sunrise are rather delicious and fluffy; a trip to this drive thru certainly quenches hangover and hunger pangs. However, despite them being pretty high on the taste factor, after housing a sausage and egg biscuit from sunrise after a long night out on Franklin Street, I felt like I was getting a real life kinestetic experience and lesson on the human body and the digestive system. Chapel Hill is blessed to have several unique and delicious biscuit joints in town. Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen has been a regular stop for me since I first enrolled at UNC. Hard to go wrong with anything on the menu. I normally go with the tried and true bacon egg and cheese or the chicken and cheese biscuit. Today, after 16 years, I tried something a little different. Visited the area recently and thought I check out the place. I thought it was decent. Definitely better than anything I can find where I live now in California. The biscuit was ok, chicken a little dry, and the cheddar just... your typical deli cheddar. The dryness of the chicken kind of ruined the whole sandwich for me. Plus... everything was barely lukewarm. Overall, I've easily had better before back home in Texas. Seems like one of those restaurants where your story/relationship with the place matters. I can easily imagine for those that live in the area having fond memories of eating there after staying out all night or returning to the area after along absence. I ordered the chicken biscuit with egg and cheese, which the lady in the drive-in said is the best biscuit in town. I'd also read rave reviews about the cinnamon roll so I ordered one of those for dessert. My order was around $6.00, but I'm sure I'll pay dearly with the healthcare I'll need later in life from eating like this. The chicken biscuit was huge, with a large fluffy biscuit topped with a fried chicken breast, cheddar cheese, and a scrambled egg. The cheese had a hard time melting, but I still liked how I could taste the sharpness from the cheddar and that it was strong enough to stand out in each bite. The chicken was also very crispy without being too greasy and didn't cause the entire sandwich to fall apart. When making chicken biscuits, it's a balance to use a biscuit that's fluffy and light but still strong enough to hold together when combined with a fried chicken breast. The biscuits at Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen pass the test. The biscuits were big, flaky and buttery, but not overly buttered like I think you occasionally get at Bojangles'. These were true Southern-style biscuits that would be great with any type of meat, jam, or other topping. I also suspect they could hold their own when topped with a couple spoonfuls of sausage gravy. The biscuit dough is what's used to also make the cinnamon rolls. My cinnamon roll was making my car smell like a cinnamon broom (not a bad thing), and it's one of those things you have to eat while it's warm. I read the reviews about this breakfast place before a trip to Chapel Hill. We saw the car snaked around the building and started second guessing things. Who wants to wait that long? We need to pee! They won't let you pee in there! There were 4 of us. All of us were full on H-ANGRY. My husband got so irritable that he left the car and went on a walk for fresh air. Things weren't looking good. The vegetarian in the car started stressing about vegetarian options. We started snapping at each other. The biscuits alone were one of my big cravings in the last few weeks of my pregnancy. While I have yet to eat anything other than a few different biscuits, hash browns, or cinnamon rolls, I'm a fan. This place is no frills but top notch. The relatively quick service has always been attentive, and when asked for recommendations they usually deliver. I still occasionally treat myself to a little something from here, if not for nostalgia's sake than because it's a darn fine biscuit. Sure, it might not be as comfort foody as Bojangles or as other-worldly good as what you can get at Time Out, but it's quick and cheap. That counts for something in this world. read more

Sunrise Biscuits are huge. They are the light buttery moist bisuits that most southerns have grown up on. They have the typical breakfast sandwhich fare that you are used to but with a twist, THEY ACTUALLY HAVE FLAVOR !! Yes, that is right, you can decern the difference between the eggs, and the cheese. The sausage patties are a wonderfully mild meaty addition to my mornings. The drawback ???? Don't go here if you are looking for rabbit food. This place is not vegan, vegetarian, or organic. They are just good warm food served exclusively through a drive thru window. Two things I wish they could do better are 1. Melt the cheese. This is kind of hard to do since they make food to order so there isn't a lot of time for the cheese to melt. 2. I wish they could do something about the traffic jam they cause on Franklin Street. This is a drive thru restuarant and as such sometime they get backed up and traffic spills out into the street. But hey, too much business is a good thing right? read more

The only negative thing about Sunrise is how calorific it is. But it's so worth it just to have those buttery, fatty biscuits. They melt in your mouth. The sweet tea is a perfect counter to the eggs, bacon, cheese or ham. When I stop in Chapel Hill before 2:30 PM (which is when they close), I absolutely have to make a detour.
