We were in town and decided to have lunch on a busy Monday. There was a wait but the staff moved people to tables as quickly as possible. The place is an old school diner/pharmacy soda fountain. The lunch menu is a decent size with a large number of sandwiches, entrees, wraps, and salads. Drinks come in large cups with a refill. We decided on a turkey Ruben, a chicken wrap, and a turkey on focaccia sandwich. Food came out pretty fast once the lunch rush was through. We seemed to arrive in the middle of their busy time, but it did clear out. Prices are very reasonable as well. Great for a casual lunch for anyone. My wife and I were in town for the UNC and Duke game. This was recommended as a place to check out. Well, this place is great! One of my favorites I've been to. Sorry about my pic. I mixed up my food before I remembered to take a pic. Anyway, this is one of my favorite breakfast dishes and they killed it. Service was great and it's a really cool place. I can see why the drugstore makes it on so many popular tourist lists. My son and I ate here for an early breakfast on a Saturday. We were early enough so it was not busy. The staff was very nice. My son ordered the omelette with ham and I ordered the pancake combo. all of the food was simple and delicious. The pancakes were so good. My son loved his breakfast and even ordered an extra egg. It's an interesting and historic place for Chapel Hill. I will say prices are pretty good but you get what you pay for. It's pretty simple food- I got chicken waffle bits and onion rings. Wasn't super impressed with the food but maybe will try something new next time. Unfortunately I don't visit often and so we sat at our table for 25 mins trying to catch our waitresses eye before realizing we had to go the front to pay, and pick up our own food trays? We were a bit lost as to what we were supposed to do and the waitress didn't check on us often so not really pleased with the service. I guess they assume that the restaurant has been around for 100 years so new visitors should know how things work? I've been wanting to try this spot for so long and I'm so glad I did today with my friend. It's such a chapel hill classic spot that's been here for over 100 years though the hours are a bit limited unfortunately. I was driving from Washington DC to Jacksonville and decided to stop in Chapel Hill for lunch. I happened to get a parking spot right in front of this place, so I decided to have lunch there. It is nicely decorated with tons of UNC jerseys and pictures, so it is a fun place to grab a quick bite to eat. The grill smelled great, and the menu had plenty of sandwiches, wraps and salads to choose from. Inside the store is a old-timey general store front with a huge selection of sodas, candy, and jams/pickles. Behind that is a classic diner with a plethora of photos from customers who have ate here (photos range from children to celebrities like Rob Lowe!) The food at this diner was incredible. With such a wide selection of foods and all at an affordable price, it was difficult to choose what to eat. The flamethrower hot dog lived up to the name. Super hot with siracha and jalapeños, I thought it was too much at first, but as I continued to eat it got better and I began to appreciate the way it blended with the hot dog. The chili on the fries was fantastic and well seasoned, but I wish there was a little more. The tuna sandwich was very light and refreshing, pairing well with the complementary chips. I was really surprised by how filling the food is and even struggled a little to finish. Definitely give this place a try if you haven't, just make sure you get there before they close (2:30pm). read more

No frills, classic sandwiches here - I got a turkey reuben and it was great, I appreciated that they used a thick-sliced and grilled turkey instead of the usual deli meat. All by myself I went to eat at the counter and ended up in the corner because the rest of it was covered in dirty dishes and cluttered with carryout containers. Pretty quick service. I ordered a hamburger (clearly not wanting cheese) and milkshake. The burger arrived without a shake and had cheese on it. They took it back to make another and it arrived as ordered, still without a shake. Half way through my burger, I was asked if everything was okay and mentioned my shake. It came right out. I was told they tend to loose focus as it gets close to closing. A UNC tradtion I will not be going to again. read more

I can fully admit that I am biased towards Sutton's. I used to eat here every Tuesday and Thursday with one of my college roommates. My order hasn't changed much from those days. I'm not a broke college student so I spring for the upgrade on my combo but that's it. My youngest had the burger and fries and he dove in before I could snap a picture. It was as big as his head and he loaded it up with toppings that don't make sense but I don't yuck his yum. For me, I ordered my usual even though it wasn't on special today: the Two Hot Dog Special. It's two hot dogs, fries (upgrade to potato munchers), and a sweet tea. They have all the toppings you want from a soda counter (chili, slaw, onions, ketchup, mustard, jalapeños, pickles, and on). As for the rest of the menu, they have something for everyone. Salads, wraps, chicken tenders, and their milkshakes are the perfect sweet treat at the end of your meal. A Chapel Hill staple. Tried it for the first time after leaving here for almost 17 years. The atmosphere was fun and the food was mediocre.

First impressions and Covid: We were welcomed and seated right away. They do a great job at spacing tables at a safe distance and have the counter closed off to create separation for the staff. Masks are required to be worn at all times (both guests and staff) unless seated at your table. Service: wasn't amazing but wasn't horrible. Had to get the server's attention when we needed something. Food: New Yorker - pastrami was a decent quality and had good flavor. Not very fatty which is hard to find at times. Cheeseburger - pretty much your basic cheeseburger. Definitely nothing to write home about. Final thoughts: Would we return here next time we are in town visiting? Most definitely not. Maybe it's because we aren't college age and don't have the "connection" to it but we have been to much better diner type places that far surpasses Sutton's. read more

Located on Franklin St., this unique place is a North Carolina landmark. Definitely a must for visitors and fans of Carolina. This place is a drug store for those to pick up prescriptions, a convenience store for snacks and candy and also serves some amazing food!! It was so yummy that we went here twice during our 5 day stay. My bf both times got the 1/3 lb burger with fries, he loved it. The meat was fresh, juicy and pressed. I got the Lone Rider hot dog which had bbq sauce and bacon on it. This place is very affordable and you get a lot for your money! It's a spectacle to look at as it is filled with signed Carolina jerseys and memorabilia and pictures of athletes and college students who have enjoyed their time here.
