Stopped in here in need of a snack and also some bathroom cleaner and I remembered how awesome this store is. I don't really know how you'd classify it. I guess it's kind of a typical convenience store--but for Riverwest, where usually nothing's all that typical. They have snacks and beer and a small selection of groceries. But some of the selection is kind of eclectic. The beer selection is definitely way better than a typical convenience store's. When I found a 6-pack of Lagunitas Little Sumpin' Extra last summer I knew this place was kind of special. You can also get the 18-pack of Bell's Two Hearted in cans, which you don't see everywhere. Even the food is a little surprising. Among all the chips and limited-selection cans of soup there's El Rey tortilla chips and Herdez salsas and stuffed grape leaves and little refrigerated carrot cakes and pizzas that aren't Tombstone and so on. A totally interesting item I saw were these little single-serving-size stuffed eggplants (or green peppers) with the ingredients listed in several languages including Turkish. I could see that there was even a small plastic fork included. I was intrigued but I couldn't find, well, instructions. Maybe another day. The aisles are narrow and they don't have hot food. But this is definitely a neighborhood gem. I should come more often. As a Riverwest dweller I'm on Locust St. enough. read more

We live across the street from Sunrise and it has come in handy so many times in a pinch. I don't find this place sketchy at all, as one reviewer thought. Every time I've gone in there the employees have been friendly, asked how I was, and were super fast and efficient. I was incredibly impressed with their beer selection as well as everything else. It's close quarters in there, but they seem to have everything I need when I can't go to the big grocery store. I like having this kind of busy little mart in my neighborhood. It generates a lot of foot and bike traffic, which keeps things safer, in my opinion. read more

Easy in Easy out. It's just a little tight inside but they have just about anything you'd need and it's close to my house. Think they are expanding in the back though. Only time will tell on the remodel they got going on. All in all great spot to get the goods meaning beer, wine and alcohol! read more

Stopped by on the way to get some "adult beverages" on a nice summer evening last week. Parking seems to be a bit "hit or miss" due to the brewery next door. But between you me and the cashier, you can park in the Loading Zone at night. The store itself, it a bit overcrowded but if you seek "adult beverages" they a decent selection. Sorry beer drinkers, not a whole lot to choose from. Cashiers are fast and friendly. Enjoy!! read more

Last time I visited Sunrise, I went to pick up some flour bc R. Felly was making some awesome homemade Mac n' Cheese & we were all out. An off duty clown stopped in to pick up some beer after his clowning shift at the old clownery. He was clearly a regular bc the shop keep promptly chuckled with him & asked a few knowing questions. The off duty clown confirmed the rumors that the shop keep heard rumbling about town; his clown coworker was indeed fired. They laughed together. Not at his problems, but at the predictability of this inevitable day. The off duty clown reasoned that if you tend to show up to clown drunk or just don't show up for clowning because you're drunk, then eventually even the best clown is subject to termination. Truth. Honk, honk. I'm surprised that Sunrise doesn't have more reviews. I'm reviewing a convenience store, correct? This one has absolutely everything. In my book, that qualifies as convenient. It's also on a corner. Very convenient. The shelves are packed & the aisles are narrow to ensure that every last thing a person might have to grab is stocked. Located in colorful Riverwest, you may meet fun characters or overhear odd stories. I thought about the drunk clown for a while afterward. I hope he pulls it together & finds a new clownery. I've lived in Riverwest for 5ish years now. At one point, I lived closer to Midget Foods... I call those years the dark ages. Sunrise has everything you could need from a corner store, and they have a liquor department now. Which is great, because I just found out I like white russians. They have good beers, not so good beers, fancy booze, bottom shelf booze, pizzas, choco-tacos, all the cereals, movies, sunblock, pickles and the friendliest employees I've ever met at a corner store. When you are a car-less student living on only a few dollars a day, your local bodega is your lifeline. It feeds you when you are hungry, boozes you when you are bored, supplies you with Nyquil when you are sick and even gives you t.p. when you need to poo. If your bodega sucks, it totally affects your day to day life. I feel so lucky to have always lived within walking distance of Sunrise Foods, because it's safe, clean, and always miraculously has exactly what I need. Somehow they pack the inventory of a much bigger store into that tiny place. That's all well and good, but what makes me really love this place like I never knew it was possible to *love* a convenience store before, is the people. The staff of about 5 guys that work here are gems, every single one of them is a total fucking sweetheart. I often go in there when I'm looking my worst: sick, tired, stressed out on my way to school, hungover, hungry, or stocking up on cheap beer and pizza. And do they judge? No. They always smile and ask how I'm doing; they even ask about my sister who moved out of the Riverwest neighborhood three years ago, but they totally remember her and always tell me to say hi to her and her husband! I love these dudes, especially the shorter one who is balding. I can't believe I've known them this long and still don't know their names...that's gotta change. read more

They have friendly employees. They have a large and good selection of beer, most of which is cold, ad all of which is at pretty decent prices. They also have a small frozen section, and some other household needs that are a little overpriced. read more

Sunrise is my favorite Milwaukee corner store! Granted I don't spend a lot of time hanging out at bodegas, but this place doesn't disappoint. They're open every day of the year, and when you pair that with their location, their convenience rating is through the roof. The employees are super nice too! They have a decent selection of beer for being a corner store. If I'm playing or catching a show at Linnemans, I typically pop in to buy an energy drink or three. Good selection of snack foods and acceptable cigarette prices (I don't smoke but have accompanied many of my friends on a quick tobacco run). Thumbs up! They're great! read more

I hug you Sunrise! I would have been S.O.L. so many nights/days if it wasn't for you. They have a pretty large beer/booze/wine selection for such a tiny store. They have Dino's frozen pizza way in the the back freezer! (Dino's is a Racine establishment and the best cheap frozen pizza in my opinion) also! It's the same pizza you can order at Foundation. They are open everyday! Close at 9pm. (I have no Idea when they open :p ) Always friendly(and sometimes funny) staff! Take a moment to look at all the stuff they have hanging on the walls.... you might just need/want it =) read more

Don't even bother to go there. BLACK MOLD inside of refrigerators where they have cans with drinks. Disgusting. Someone should call health department. And they treat customers like sh*t. Never again. I'd rather drive little bit farther but I'll be sure that I will not get sick. read more

Everything is perfect about this place. Except sometimes the customers. One time I got knocked into a shelf of chips and corn nuts because some lunatic tried to jump over the counter and knocked into me in his attempt. What a place! Friendliest staff I have ever encountered at a local corner store by far. Pretty good selection of craft and domestic beers, along with a nice assortment of liquors and wines. Also a great place to pick up some dice, batteries, cat toys, ginger beer, pretty much anything you could need. Oh and they are open EVERY DAY until 9pm. Can't beat it! read more

This place is perfect for when I need to go on a quick beer run. They have a nice selection. Their wine, however, is lacking and their liquor is a bit more expensive than other places. No worries though; the guys who own the place are always friendly and they run a pretty tight ship. They don't take crap from some of the neighborhood transients that sometimes hang out there. read more

Really reliable, 9am-9pm every day. Have been surprised at the odd things they have in stock (fresh lemons?!). Also a really great beer selection at better prices than most grocery stores. Employees are friendly and also tough as sh** when they need to be. read more
