I don't discriminate with food so you will find me at a nice restaurant, a truck, a cart, a dive restaurant, a bar and in back of the liquor store hot table. I stumbled across this place with my Yelp trick, if you are in an area away from home look for restaurants in the area because you will see options that don't show on the generic Yelp search from home and I do this while traveling also. Ok the low down on this hidden gem and I always say that you have to get off of Main Street and into the neighborhoods no matter how good or bad they are because that's where the nuggets are. This is a small neighborhood market/liquor store with a diverse hot food table that is like soul food crashed into Puerto Rican food with cat fish, fried chicken, chicken soup, bbq looking food and Puerto Rican classics. I had no service issues and everyone was friendly but some Yelpers might have a problem with the area but it's never stopped me. I was only there Puerto Rican items even though the fried chicken was very tempting. The P/R rice was a definite and I had to ask about other items like the potato ball and the dark tamale looking thing. The P/R rice was seasoned slightly compared to rest of my food and clumpy with beans in it. The potato ball was fu%king delicious and amazing seasoned nicely. It's like a crispy thin pastry shell that has a layer of mashed potatoes and a ground beef center, shepherds pie in a ball OMG I have to have again. The dark cigar looking thing is similar to a tamale with like a plant based texture/taste with shredded pork inside that was seasoned well and spiced nicely. OMG this is such a delicious gem in the back of a liquor store and well worth the drive so I can't wait to go back. read more

I had forgotten about Pueblo but the other night a coworker and I stopped there after work. I had been for beer and small necessities before but never tried the food. I was hungry and in the mood to get something to take home so there we were. I should say that their beer prices and selection are pretty good for the size and location of the store. They generally have Dogfish Head, Three Sheeps, and a few others that you don't always find everywhere even if they're not exactly rare. Prices are generally good for the other items in the store too. There's a lot of teas and some other dry goods. But we were there for the deli. It was definitely past peak hours and some items were sold out. But I got some (yellow?) rice and some beef stew. The seasoned rice was flavorful for being so deceptively simple. The beef stew was good too if a little salty. I would definitely come back more toward lunchtime. I've always liked the mom-and-pop "neighborhood" vibe about Pueblo too. If I lived closer I would be there more often. read more

You know that saying "an apple cider a day keeps the doctor away?" wait, wait, wait..I'm getting this all mixed up. Let's try this again. ok, you know that phrase "2 apple ciders a day keep the doctor away?" Well unfortunately for me, I found myself rolling home one night thinking of my empty fridge and realizing that the nearest grocery/convenience/liquor store was not in my direct trajectory home. But then I remembered this little place on Holton where people are always parking-leaving-running across the street to enter and generally blocking the bike lane. I could stop there. There's a whole little grocery store in there but I made a bee line for the coolers which are thru a doorway to your left next to the cashier. They had crisp and cinnful apple angry orchard cider and hey, that was good enough for me! There was a little bit of drama at the counter briefly with a man with a ton of groceries laid out everywhere (frozen beef patties, bags of some sort of beef rib, cookies etc) attempting to pay for them with a lottery ticket with some sort of cryptic writing on it (I can't make this stuff up.) Thankfully (for me anyhow) the clerk didn't seem in the mood to accept lottery tickets as currency, writing on them or not, and let me pay with cash before the saga of discussing the bags of beef continued. ooh yeah, and bike parking out front. Next to a phone booth (I didn't think they still existed) in case you ever need one (and these days who knows where you'd go if your cell phone broke.) read more

Love the Pueblo Market! Not only are they in Riverwest but they got the goods! One of the very few places that have the real deal, truly spicy, ginger beer! I come here just for that most of the time so I can make my mules proper! Pueblo also keeps a good stock of booze on the shelf. It's easy to get to and it's easy to get out of. most times parking is available right out front. Also the hot food they have is off the chain. Great selections of some Puerto Rican classics! I dig the new version of Pueblo. Hot food is available, and though I have little experience with it, I can say that what I have tried is pretty good. They have a good selection of fresh meat and many Latin food items. It is really nice to be able to get them right in the neighborhood and not have to go all the way to El Rey. They also closed down the bar next door replacing it with a large liquor section complete with a pretty great beer selection, a lot of it in the fridge already. Good place. Pretty good prices. Goodbye Nina's and hello extended craft beer/wine/liquor section! Lots of things (especially individual bottles/cans) are by far the best prices in the city - always good. They now stock Flying Dog, Founders, Lakefront, and New Glarus brews (to name a few) along with the other standard products. The new and improved Pueblo's also boasts slushies and more 'to-go' snacks. Of course the meat remains cheap and plentiful and the hot bar is still going. With grilling season (almost) in swing I know I am going to be spending some well-spent dollars here. read more

I really love this place. It reminds me of the little corner stores we had back in Brooklyn when I was growing up. The selection may not be pick 'n save quality, nor is the pricing that low, but the produce and meat quality are generally pretty good, and it's in a convenient place when I've got time to kill waiting for the 11 line to come through. Nice beer selection and good food. But the employees are incredibly rude and racist. The guy refused to serve an African American patron claiming his ID didn't look like him. You can tell by the way he treats his black costumers that he doesn't want or need their business. We get much better treatment at the liquor store a few blocks up on Brady. Pueblo foods is located in the Riverwest neighborhood. They specialize in foods from Puerto Rico- plantains,yuca, etc., tropical produce There is a meat counter, a hot deli. and spices. They carry a variety of products from the Goya product line. They just added a bar and restaurant called Nina's Restaurant, I heard they make the best mofongo - It's a dish of plantains, blended with bits of roast pork and plenty of garlic, served in a shape of a ball. Never shopped here, but I love the steak and rice. My bf always gets the hog maws. I've trained myself my entire life to hate most pork (save for bacon, brats, and ribs), especially something called a maw (wth is that even?) but every time he brings some home I sneak a few bites in until the whole styrofoam container is empty. The staff here is great! We live right across the street so it's really convenient, the grocery selection is slightly limited but when your in a pinch it's great. The new extended liquor section is a plus and the hot food is good. I recommend trying the tacos and the yellow rice (Puerto Rican rice?). read more

As far as Pueblo Foods goes, I love it and will continue to shop here. No doubt about that. I've been wanting to try Nina's connected next door because I love Puerto Rican food. I've been to PR a few times and I wanted to see how authentic it was. I went on a Monday night with a friend, we walked in with nobody inside.. which is fine ill still give it a try. We sat at the bar waiting a few minutes, then a guy shows up and my friend asks "do you serve margaritas?" He looked around confused and replied "..yes?" Then she asked how much they were and he replied "5?" We didn't want to spend $5 on margaritas if he wasn't sure how to make them. Then it took a bit to get a menu. We reviewed it, didn't look very interesting. Then there was nobody around in sight to ask questions to so we ended up just leaving. Customer service is horrible, although I'm sure the food is good. 1st I will say when the food is good it excellent. I have eaten a pueblo's 4 times , the last being a real disappointment. The portion was super small I'd say maybe a third of the size of the my other visits. At first glace I would say that would have been a problem, but after tasting the roast pork it turned out to be a blessing. It was so dry, eating a spoon full of sand would have been easier to eat. I called and spoke to nina. She wanted me to return the 2my dinners. The only problem I live I brookfield and had not plans of driving back to the eastside. I was told ask for her on my next vist. Today I returned. The same rude worker was there. I was told since it was only the pork that was a problem she would only give me 1to portion of the pork. I was so over it I didn't argue. We took it put it in my truck and went to a different restaurant for lunch. I personally will not ever return. If you do go beware of the 4my times I've went, I got charged a different price every time. For 2 pork dinners I was charged anywhere from 16 dollars up to 23 read more
