My family and I have shopped at Sunrise for over 40+ years. The produce is singularly of top drawer quality hence the reason why independent grocers shop here for the best value. Jenny and Winnie, whose father owned this iconic store still run it, thankfully. The European imported products available are par excellence. The fresh meat and poultry section is well worth the peruse as you wander from aisle to aisle. The Malaysian, South Asian, and products from other exotic locales are phenomenal - you have to shop here if you are a self-proclaimed foodie or a newly minted student with culinary aspirations. I have 4 cups raw vegetable/fruits everyday and need to buy affordable ones quite often. This store can be big help!! And thank you Evan K for giving me a tip. It really never dawed on me that Sunrise Market was where Sunrise Soya all started until recently re-visiting this store and actually shopping there. I've always known this place, even as a kid, where my parents would be across the street at Rice World, then come here for the produce, not much has changed, and this place is still busy as ever. When I say not much has changed, I really mean that, probably a light bulb or two, but the market is the same, wrapped right around the store, fresh produce, from your vegetables to your fruits, this place really has it all, and we haven't even touched the inside yet. Don't just think the regular patron shops here, as they have a seperate line near the fridge area in the back for restaurant owners, this place supplies to all. When you get to the inside, it's a different maze of items, there is more produce in here, duplicates of the ones outside, also a fridge area where you can have your mushrooms, bean sprouts, and other frigerated produce items. There's a butcher in the back, there is a whole sub-section of dried items, noodles, cookies, mushrooms, canned items everywhere, then there's a corner section for 'Sunrise' items, yes, their tofu's, and I can say this... as a tofu buyer to know this, it is cheaper here, anything on their on label of Sunrise is cheaper, deals galore. I ended up buying two bags of tofu puffs for $2, and some blocks of firm tofu for $1.50, can't say no to that. This place can be chaotic though, and that is in turn the pricing here, you will save a bundle, and your hands will feel it from the bags your going to be carrying out here, hopefully your vehicle is close (that's if your driving one!), people know about this place, it's not some hidden gem that you just see one person.... at times you have to manuvre your shopping basket! Yes, basket, there are no carts in here, as there would be no room to roll it around, yet turn, if you don't like cramped spaces, this place is not for you, if your used to clean, well lit (bright) supermarkets that are spotless, this definitely is not the place for you! It can be a warzone, and for the price that your getting things, you gotta fight a little to get through it all. Yes, the place practically features all Asian's working here, but guess what.... they do take debit.. so the theory of cash only is thrown out the window! There is parking around the place, all meter, unless your willing to go a block up on each direction. It has many of the trappings of a "real" supermarket, yet retains the "corner store" (which it is, literally) quality and super-low prices coupled with an amazing variety of product. One of the cheapest place to get your veggies and fruits in Vancouver. Getting decent quality can be a hit or miss sometimes. But I can get a full reusable bag full of food for $15! 4 bunch of green onions for $1, pack of Thai Basil for $1.79, sometimes 3 limes for $1, a pack ofini tomatoes for $1.99 and so on. There is metered parking around. It's not the nicest part of town, so just be careful. Though I haven't run into any issues yet. read more

This cute little grocery store is one of the last busy places in Chinatown. Made more famous (because those in the hood already knew) by Real Housewives of Vancouver, this place has a lot of stuff in a tight compact footprint. They generally have the cheapest prices on groceries for miles around and their banana prices are cheaper than some of the larger chain stores. Shopping here is like going back in time because of all the hustle and bustle. They have all sorts of asian groceries and sauces from far off. If you want to experience grocery shopping before cashierless machines and express checkout while still getting a good deal on groceries then this is the place to come. read more

Sunrise is a market located next the fire hall and Police museum downtown. At night it's an empty white building in a run down part of town, but during the day it explodes with business! The place is packed with people of all ethnicity, picking out fruit, meat, and canned goods for the cheapest possible prices. I go for small grocery runs, and rarely ever have to pay more than $20 for a back pack full of food. A helpful hint though, most Asian-ethnic people are lactose intolerant, so don't expect to find a selection of milk, cheese, or yogurt here or anywhere else in Chinatown. Im surprised they even call it lactose INtolerance, is should be noted that very few ethnicity in the world "blessed" with the ability to digest lactose. With that said, you should be able to find anything else you are looking for here. Exotic herbs and spices, which they've dedicated an entire section of their store to, baking ingredients like shortening and corn yeast, fish, poultry, beef, exotic fruits such as the winter melon, their selection is very expansive, much more than the typical supermarket/grocery store. If you cant find an ingredient that you've been looking everywhere for, check here as a last resort. Or a first, if you want a lot of quality food on the cheap. read more

Plus they have a huge selection of other items you may need to pick up while you're there. Who knew in the city of million dollar crack houses you would find produce this ridiculously cheap. My mother is a blood hound when it comes to finding good deals. When she told me she bought almost a cart full of (almost) fresh vegetables for 11 dollars, I didn't believe her until I saw it with my own eyes! $1 for a piece of 3lb winter melon that was enough to make multiple pots of soup and a ten person hotpot meal. Sunrise Market - a variety of fruits and vegetables - Grocery Near Me - Vancouver, British Columbia

Personal preference helps. This is the cheapest place in all of Vancouver to get good (but not great) fruits, vegetables, and other food products. Especially near expiration dates. There's a good organic supply, but it comes and goes. I routinely get 50 pounds of fruits and vegetables for $20. Some of those I take chances with because they're near the expiration date but I'm satisfied when I buy 12 avocados for $4 and about 3 aren't the best. Consider the price of $0.33 per avocado to over a dollar elsewhere. If you don't feel comfortable with near-expiration foods, by all means spent 5 times as much for prettier looking foods at Whole Foods or Safeway. Understand what you're getting into I look at it that the best thing I can do for my health is to eat as many fresh fruits and vegetables as possible. If some ends up in the compost - which it would if it doesn't sell - that's ok by me. If you shop at this store, you will automatically eat more fress produce. That's worth it in itself. read more

Hell, they're the cheapest to be found *anywhere* in Canada. SEVENTEEN CENTS a pound for zucchini??! Oh heelllls, yes. After shopping here, I don't know how I could ever go back to the zombieland that is the quintessential Whole Foods / Safeway / IGA et al experience. There is no lame holiday music playing during that dreaded end-of-the-year season, there is no irritating smooth jazz lulling shoppers into an automaton state of buying bliss, there is no person in an apron and nametag asking customers if they've found everything they're looking for. We're all here for the same reason: to buy or sell food. Period. Word to the wise: go early for the best selection -- even then, you'll have to pick around a bit, but (and this is a big 'but') isn't that the way it's supposed to be? Don't you find it strange that every single broccoli crown you pick up in your average chain grocer is perfect? Don't you think it's time you start choosing something a bit more real? You don't come here for quality service, you don't even come here for quality food. You come here for the cheapest darn groceries this city has to offer. I just bought bananas for .19/lbs. Nineteen-cents per pound. .35/lbs apples, .50 heads of romaine lettuce, etc. etc. I can shop here for groceries and spend $20 what would be $60 at Donald's. Sunrise Markets is also cool and similar to Dondald's in that it carries a lot of harder to find Asian foods, a ton of gluten free and vegan stuff, etc. etc. Places like this are a staple for those without your standard north american diet. As Robin M. said, I don't know how I could go back to shopping at the major players in groceries. One of my favourite things about Sunrise is actually maybe something I shouldn't say, I'm not sure if it's *ahem* a proper thing for a grocer to do. But they sell recently expired things for INSANELY cheap. I just bought a fuckton of veggie burgers for .99/package just because the "sell by" date was yesterday. Food isn't a cinderalla story where it'll turn into a metaphorical pumpkin if it passes an EXACT time. What I am saying is that I eat expired food, get that judgy look off of your face! Living in the North end of Strathcona, this is a grocery store I come to often. I find going into Chinatown really cumbersome for whatever odd reason, so I frequent this place rather often. I would be lying if I told you everything here is not only cheap but fresh. It is cheap always. Fresh always it is not... There's a certain level of digging around and hunting for fresh produce, but if you put some effort into it, you get some real great produce for about 1/3 of the price you would at regular chain grocery stores. I think this has got to be part of the charm. In my experience I found that the quality of produce really varies from week-to-week so, you may want to return if you don't find what you are looking for to take a gander again. For the most part, your staples are very consistent, so that's decent. Never bought meat; I just go down a block to big lou's if I do ever eat meat. Some tips: avoid bringing a bulky bag (I often have to as I drop by after work) because the aisles are very narrow and cramped. They have huge bags of almost gone bad produce for a buck, so if you don't mind cutting away the bad parts, you can get a real steal. Cash or debit (over $5) only. Open 10:00-18:00 everyday. read more

First of, this market is comparatively "clean" (it doesn't reek) and relatively coherent (things are are shelves, mostly). It's nothing fancy, the staff aren't (there to be) helpful or brighten your day, but really, if you're going to the store as a pick-me-up, they have cheap candy that will make you feel pretty amazing. I don't need perfect veggies for stir-fries and sauces, they're going to be wilted down and/or mashed up anyway. What I do need is copious amounts of not-frozen or canned veggies for as cheap as possible. This has nothing to do with being a starving student, I just don't see why the same non-organic produce is several times more expensive at every other store in this city. Even the equally less than prime produce at Donald's is more expensive. Don't even get me started on other so-called budget food stores. Sunrise Market is THE budget food store. It's not just the produce either. Gigantic jars of Sambal Oelek for $15? Cliff bars for $1.50? Chocolate bars 2/$1? This is my second visit there, I've yet to really delve into the myriad of options. Today I walked out with 3 HEAVY bags of groceries for $25. This included 2lt blueberry juice, 2 bags of shallots, 600g quinoa and 2lbs of noodles. Yeah! 2lbs of noodles for less than $4. Empty carbs should always be this cheap. They didn't have the chicken broth I use (food allergies), so I stopped by SuperValu cause it's close by my place and I know they have the broth I can use. $23 later I had a small bag of groceries, nothing special, cheap bread, no-name oil, stuff like that. I was so disappointed. Angry almost. But I could't stay mad long, my cupboards and fridge are full :) read more

How am I just discovering this place now!!?? My goodness what a find. Sunrise must be the cheapest place for groceries in the Lower Mainland. Everything from meats, produce and dairy to frozen seafood - you will not be disappointed!! Lots of produce is massive bags for $1 or less. Get there early for the best selection. I was able to purchase everything I needed for two massive pots of jambalaya for under $13. That includes spices, poultry, seafood, sausage, and all veggies. I estimate that it was at a minimum 50% less I would've paid elsewhere. Tip: you have to pay for meat at the meat counter, so my suggestion is to do it last because they'll let you pay for your entire order. read more

Sunrise Market, oh so cheap and bountiful, I could buy endless vegetables with twenny bones! Here's my advice when it comes to shopping here: -Dig through the produce. Stuff here can get pretty gnarly, but the stuff that isn't is a seriously killer deal. -Don't make this your go-to stop for pre-packaged goods. For the most part, the packaged items aren't a steal. Sometimes they are a steal though (like the Naam dressings- yeah baby!) -Watch your purse. I've had regulars of the store warn me to hold my purse close. I've never had a problem, but it can't hurt to pass that advice on to you. -Shop with an open mind. There are lots of neat things to try that you may have never tried before. Try some new things. Heck, the internet will teach you how to cook it, just buy it! Have fun at the register when you see how cheap your bill will be. Sunrise Market on 300 Powell St. was the first store to sell Sunrise Soya products. They do have some good deals for their large selection fruits and vegetables. You'll find a large selection of Asian variety of fruits and vegetables and produce from North America and other parts of the world too. I don't know why Sunrise Soya products sold at this store are priced a bit higher priced than other places? I would expect the lowest prices for Sunrise Soya products, but nope. The Sunrise Tofu factory is minutes away too. I've seen some well-known Vancouver chefs shop at Sunrise so their produce has to be pretty decent right? Yes, their stuff is good, but not perfect. Sunrise Market was the first secret revealed to me as a new Vancouver import a couple of years ago. I couldnt believe it! 1 Dollar for a perfectly ripe pineapple?! Sure you basically have to eat the produce that or the next day (unless youre like me, and like to chop and freeze for later use), but thats small beans when considering the price difference. Perfect escape, and far more interesting of an experience than the often absurdly over-inflated produce and otherwise at other "Markets", lets say they rhyme with Chesters, and Voices. I was a little put off by the meat department, but have purchased ground pork and beef a couple of times and avoided any sort of bacteria related illness, so, that was nice. $1 watermelons? 50 cents for a pound of red/yellow peppers? 2 LARGE bags of garlic for $1? Are you freakin' kidding me? This place is absolutely insane. OK, remember the saying, "If it's too good to be true, it probably is"? Yeah unfortunately many ultra cheap products at Sunrise are at the verge of moulding or expired. The cheap garlic has mostly sprouted and the frozen garlic sausage on sale was expired two days prior. But all it means is, you might have to sort through your bag of produce and take out the bad ones and hopefully there's not too many of them to make your purchase worth it. Or just eat them up very very quickly because some of them are really not bad but it won't last more than 2 days. That being said, Sunrise doesn't just sell rotten food. Their fresh produce are also very cheap compared to your neighbourhood IGA or Safeway. The meats are also cheap in comparison. They also carry food that are not staples of Asian cuisine, e.g. dairy, health food products, cheese etc. You can probably find most of what you need here. I got the inside tip on this place when I first moved into the city. I was looking for a cheap place to buy produce that had an expansive selection and.... did I mention it needed to be cheap? I love this place for all it's craziness. The produce is apparently set out in tiers, the closer to the street, the cheaper (lesser quality) it is, the closer to the inside of the store, the more expensive and less bruised it becomes. It's a bit of a mind trap to figure out and I have no real idea how the cashier knows which tier the produce came from, suffice to say I can stock up well for less than $20 and have plenty of fresh produce to last me a couple of weeks. The butcher in the back is ok, although a bit of a pain that you have to pay at the back register, however, they will put your meat aside for you whilst you wander the store. Their Asian grocery section - in the room off to the left of the butcher's counter has a plethora of sauces, noodles, rices and seasonings. You can find a good selection of organic yoghurt/eggs/tofu in the fridges. On the shelves in front of the butcher is a selection of 'random western foods': Annie's salad dressings; canned tomatoes; couscous and JIFFY Corn Muffin Mix (man, I've been looking for this for so long, that I had to have it shipped to me from Baltimore). If you can't find what you're looking for...ask, each cashier seems to have a stash of goodies behind their register. Oh and my most recent find and best deal? The bag of precut stirfry vegies for $1! So far that's gotten me 3 meals and the bag's not finished. $1, people! read more

There is definitely some good deals here. Being raised by a gourmet grocer kinda family it was a little out of my comfort range. The butcher shop has a great variety and prices half of what you'd see at big name grocers. I've tried buying the produce but have always found myself throwing away half of it since it spoiled a few days later. I'd say buy today-eat today. I love this place. I love the dinginess, the old broken tile floors, the bright halogen lights, the bursting to overflowing shelves, the colorful characters that wander in and out and the old Chinese folk that work the counters. Oh and the prices, oh yes. It would be flogging a dead horse to keep repeating what other wonderful yelpers have already voiced, but this truly is the best place for cheap goods. Sure, things aren't the most visually appetizing and some of the things look truly questionable, but spend a few minutes digging, have faith and I'm almost positive that you'll come out a winner. Boxes of organic salads for $1.50 (typically 4+ in those other box stores), $0.59/ lb bananas, $1.00 per box blackberries, $1.50 bean curds (stinky yet satisfying) among other fab finds, INSANO! Honestly the experience of shopping there is half the fun. Other than the joy of coming away with 3 bags of groceries for $15.00, theres the entertainment value just watching people work away and weave in and out. Sure, it can be a bit claustrophobic and there are a lot of items you may notice are expired when you're putting them away at home (oops....) but I'd like to hope that the expiry date is just a suggestion. Whatever doesn't kill you right? What I'm really trying to say is if you really care what your produce looks like, it may be best to steer towards some of the other big box chains, but if you want to save some cash, have a most fun shopping experience and know you put some solid effort into digging around for eatable produce, Sunrise should be your jam. read more

This is a market with a grocery store and europeans will recognize this kind of produce market. The produce sold here is mostly second/third quality or close to rot. But you can get good deals. A bag of 3 pound bell peppers for $1 is unbeatable. I must admit that in many other markets in Vancouver the quality of produce is lacking and therefore I shop in more places to get the best deals. I popped in here under the headline: Best Cheap Organic Grocery Stores in Vancouver. Wrong. There is very little in the way of organic vegetables here. Now, keep in mind, if you're looking for inexpensive, then brother, this is home. I know of no other place in...well, anywhere, where you'll find lower prices than these. Truly wonderful. Here's why I now avoid this spot for 'vegetables': I have IC. Interstitial cystitius. I know. You're now rolling your eyes and saying, 'Don't have it. Get bent'. Lucky you. But for those of you who have imperfect body parts and get rubbed the wrong way with hidden insecticides, avoid it like the plague. Their vegetables are often cheap because they're sprayed. Another reason to avoid sprayed vegetables: Alzheimer's. Yet another thing to worry about on our planet. Do your own research. Recent studies show vegetables coated or invaded by insecticides, are more likely to cause Alzheimer's. yeek. So now I look for organic. And yes, it's a pain in the arse because you know how much they cost. Places like SPUD and Sweet Cherubim jack up the prices through the proverbial tiled roof. I do recommend this place for everything else however. Absolutely love the bargain basement costs and the ambience is rare and lovely. Ugh to Safeway. read more

I go half away across downtown Vancouver for this place - I love the atmosphere, kind of of an asian farmers market. The other day I got wrapped packages of very fresh seedless grapes that would have been $8 at KIMS for $1. Fantastic oranges for 1/2 the price of my supermarket. $1 strawberries etc... you have to be careful the avacadoes were not good and my $1 watermelon was rotten inside. Having said that I go weekly and fill my backpack for $10-$15. Love it it screaming old asian ladies and all!!! read more

The produce here is exceptionally well priced but not everything. With some items you have to pick through to get what's fresh. They seem to get some second rate produce for some things and other times the prices are great and the produce fresh as anywhere else. I'm surprised at how cheap the bill is for some goods. Incredibly cheap local produce shop in Chinatown/DTES. You will likely have to hunt for the better looking produce in the bins on the sidewalks, but hey, if you're shopping in this part of town, you won't mind working a bit to find the good stuff. That being said, everything that I have purchased has been in excellent condition. The meat counter is oriented towards more of an Asian clientele, but this is a good thing. Lots of meat for very good prices. They do tend to sell out of a number of items though later in the day. Grocery section is surprisingly well stocked with a lot of staples. The multicultural aspect of the neighborhood is reflected in what they carry here (though again, lots of Asian influence). Sunrise closes at 8 PM daily for those who can't find the hours online. read more

Sunrise is an unpretentious market with an impressive selection of produce. It offers fresh vegetables, herbs and fruits at a significantly cheaper price than anywhere else in the city. It also has a meat section with a good variety. Their prawns and Basa fillets are very inexpensive. Know what you're coming into and you'll love it. At least if you are a thrifty dime like I am. Expect bottom barrel service- you'll not paying 29 cents per pound of banana to be catered to. Though I'd say it's about 50/50 friendly and cranky workers. Don't go here if you have space issues, I get bumped into a lot here by workers and other shoppers alike. Once I was in line and two customers were yelling so much it looked like they might get into a fight right there. Shortly after moving to Vancouver I was walking around the city to try and discover new things. During one of these walks I stumbled across this market and have been shopping there ever since. The fruit and veg is ridiculously cheaper than you will find in any grocery store. You can find all your Asian grocery needs here as well from fish sauce to pickled garlic. The butcher also very well priced and you can pick up pork belly and other Asian favoured cuts here ,such as Korean cut short ribs. as well. The area it is located in can make for an interesting outing. I saw a near fight between a drunk and another customer, someone shoplifting their whole grocery basket and another drunk being brought down and dragged out for stealing all withing 30 mins.
