What a lovely surpise! It is inconspicuously tucked away in midtown this market packs alot of product in a small space for Manhattan. You can find everything you need from ready made food, bentos, snacks, ice cream, produce, imported goods, bascially everything. It is tight to manuver between the isles, but it adds to the charm of how each inch offers something different. And if you hop over to the other side of the market you will find a very spacious food hall with additional seating upstairs. It's been a while since I last wrote a review and I've been back many times--given a few other smaller Japanese groceries in Manhattan have shuttered during or after covid, (including Sunrise Mart's East Village location) I'm appreciative of this location's existence and their selection of affordable groceries and prepared food for eat-in or take out. The right entrance is for the prepped foods section--they have a selection of made-to-order items like ramen and udon noodles soups, bento boxes with a variety of proteins, side dishes, poke, sushi and savory snacks. Chilled sides and drinks, and a small bakery counter round out the food options. Towards the back there are stairs on the left hand side that lead up to a small upper seating area. I work in the area and a coworker recommended this spot to me. They told me the onigiri was good. I got 2 onigiris one was spicy salmon and the other was spicy tuna. I came in the morning time around 10am. It was pretty chill I was the only person dining in at that time. I was able to read my book in peace. These onigiri were pretty good. They were hot and fresh when I grabbed them. The shape was perfect. These may be some of the best onigiri I've had in New York so far. I usually get mines in soho but those spots don't compare. You could taste the freshness of the salmon and tuna. I was able to get a good blend of fish with rice in each bite. Also, I could taste the spices. People get confused as I did when I first went into both marts to discover two different places with the same name that's not connected by an interior hallway, but you need to go outside to get to the other side. Anyway, I wanted to get a hot food item and not something already prepared in the fridge section. I ordered the chicken udon at the register, which confused me at first as I didn't know one had to do that until I saw signs. The chicken isn't fried, which is great, and they give you a lot for a small bowl. There are so many types of bowls you can order. If you want to eat at the mart, there's indoor and outdoor seating. Why have I not come here earlier?! It's a great spot for a quick lunch. There's some seating inside but it's really a grab and go spot. They have a ton of different Japanese foods, all at great prices! You can order off their menu which has udon, curry, and more. But they're also constantly pumping out bento boxes and bringing out hot foods. The prices are really reasonable for Japanese food in the city and it's delicious. I came to grab a bento box during lunch and was overwhelmed by the amount of different items to choose from. There was a line but it moved quick and the staff is also nice! The cafe side of this sunrise mart is officially my favorite casual Japanese spot in the city! In particular, their generously sized and freshly made onigiri are the reason I keep coming back. While it may be easier to grab one off the counter or from the refrigerated case, I urge you to wait just a little while longer for them to make a fresh one for you. My favorite is the spicy tuna mayo. The seasoned rice and creamy delicious tuna are perfectly combined inside, and really make for such a delicious and filling lunch. While their fried chicken karaage onigiri with sweet and tart sauce is also tasty, I've found that they simply don't put enough chicken in it. The salted plum onigiri is also a classic, but I really prefer the spicy tuna one. Sunrise mart also makes delicious hand sushi rolls. The California roll had cucumber, fresh crab, ripe avocado, and a crisp burst of lettuce which I thought was a nice touch. I would definitely like to try one of their other hand rolls next time I return! I've also had their seaweed salad, which was very solid and well seasoned. They've got a lot of hot lunch and dinner options, including rice bowls, curries, udon and soba, and some odd looking Japanese "pasta dishes" that appear to use spaghetti. The grocery side carries all sorts of imported Japanese ingredients and snacks. They don't appear to have a very extensive produce section, but what they do have is very fresh and well maintained (ie: no slimy scallions or worm eaten napa cabbage!). I've bought Japanese soup bases and specialty ramen noodles here, at a bit of a steep price but this is to be expected at a Japanese grocery store. Overall, I could take or leave the actual market, but the cafe at sunrise mart is truly a gem to be found in midtown east. Great still as a market. I stop in almost everyday looking for good pieces of fish. Their cooked food is what I'm tagging them for today. I don't exactly expect sliced filet mignon when I ordered a beef udon but I also don't expect to get mostly inedible fat and connective tissue. I saw a ready-made bonito riceball so I ordered one. I got it still warm bec. was freshly-made. $2.99 only. Another day, my family decided to check what else they offered. We got Katsu curries (good serving, option of brown/white rice, precooked proteins) and ramen (with thick charsiu pork, just ok). They split the restaurant and the grocery story into two different places, right next door to each other. We went to both and still love going there (the restaurant is older). The market sells lots of Japanese groceries on the first floor and home goods upstairs. The restaurant has lots of food that are made-to-order and also premade. You pay at the cashier first then you pick up the food at the counter. Lots of people working to make your food. You can even eat upstairs since they have a few small tables. I got the spicy salmon roll and a shrimp tempura onigiri--which is made fresh to order! Both were really good, but I was especially happy with the onigiri. The tempura was fresh and had good texture, and the rice had nicely distinct rice grains and was well seasoned. The sweet savory brown sauce was delicious too! Very filling lunch that hit the spot. Like Katagiri, Sunrise Mart offers a range of Japanese groceries and prepackaged Japanese foods. They do have a slightly wider selection than Katagiri, but in terms of flavor and quality, I find Katagiri to be superior. The lines here also tend to move slower, and it can get quite busy. read more

My salmon nigiri was a delightful surprise - I'm always a bit skeptical about nigiri that may have bit sitting in the fridge for a while, but found it really fresh. The family next to me ordered hot items (eg katsu curry, dons, etc) so that may be the move if I come back. Service & ambience: It's a cafeteria setup, so didn't feel fair to really evaluate service and ambience. It seemed like the food came out quickly. It's a popular lunch spot so fairly noisy. This has always been a favorite place of mine for picking up onigiri, or specialty grocery items that I can't find anywhere else. For that, it's good. But recently I had an experience that really disappointed me. It turns out that their vegetable curry, which I have been having for years, is made from chicken stock. I found this out because a young employee (probably vegetarian too) said 'just so you know, the vegetable curry is made from chicken stock', clearly passing along information that she hadn't known until recently. To that employee, I give 5 stars. To the place? Two stars. It's absolutely unconscionable to sell a vegetable curry without indicating anywhere on the menu or signage that it's made from chicken stock--particularly because in the grocery part of the store you can find any number of boxed vegetable curries for sale with are vegetarian, and they taste exactly the same as the vegetable curry they serve, to the point that I honestly thought until now that they were just serving the boxed curry heated up. It's been a hot minute since I've been here. They expanded their store and it's double in size. I will have to say that the expansion didn't really do their store justice. The amount of goods they sell didn't seem to increase by much. If anything, it made the store less appealing. Before you can get everything in one spot. Now you gotta go to shop next door to get what you need. The place is a very dimly lit too. Did they forget to pay the electric bill or something? Very unappealing.
