I am not and never was a serious record collector, but I bought a lot of 7" records, punk records and the odd hilarious cassette tape. I do know Freecloud is a great place for collectors to go. There are always people in there taking a good, long browse, buying, selling, and shooting the breeze with Rich, the owner (and singer/guitar player in Mad Bomber Society). That man is like a living music encyclopedia, I'm telling you. The price range is huge, from cheap for random old EPs to expensive for rare collectors items. If they don't have what you want, they'll try their best to order it for you. I personally like to buy tickets for shows at Freecloud whenever I possibly can, rather than giving my money to Ticketmaster. At most he'll charge a $1 service charge which is pretty decent in my books. I love all the postcards, old show posters and quirky records up on the walls. I found some rarities and did not leave empty handed. Despite being called "curmudgeon" the staff were friendly and helpful. Also, did I mention the poster collection? I am truly overwhelmed by the selection of music, and not just rock. There are substantial sections for blues, jazz, punk, folk, and more. I walked in to browse and walked out with an armful of CDs. If you can imagine a universe where Joy Division never broke up, the Chemical Brothers became the new Beatles, and Lisa Loeb is still hot, than you will enjoy Listen Records & CDs. The staff at Listen is awesome. Very nice, personable guys with a lot of patience. My wife went there recently with a long list of items that she was seeking out for me. She said that the dude working the check-out was totally cool and didn't mind looking up every item on the list to see if it was available, and if not, where she could find it. He didn't even exhibit any signs of musical snobbery towards my classic rock and metal leanings. She came home full of raves (and records). If you're into metal or older rock music, Listen won't be your ideal stop, but it's great for people who aren't into mainstream stuff. Listen has a demographic in mind and they who know their target audience is.

They are the largest antique store in Western Canada, and so there is a lot to see here. From vintage license plates to toys to furniture to everything in between (and then some). I like coming here just to browse and see what they have. The Old Strathcona Antique Mall is filled with different antique/vintage vendors so trying to hunt down a particular item can be hard, and might be in more than one spot. That said I've been on the hunt for vintage travel postcards from specific destinations I've visited (and there's a particular style I want). Postcards are in several different spots so when I come here I try to go through them all. I've done pretty well on my mission, but there are still some destinations I don't have. Oh no that means I have to go back to The Old Strathcona Antique Mall, probably pretty soon.

I posted a request for a bird book (Birds of Alberta). I had been looking for since mine had gone missing some time ago. Well what do you know - a few weeks later, they CALLED ME and let me know that they had the book I requested on hold and waiting for me. They have fabulous hours, great staff, and prices are really good too. I parked right out front, but because it was a Friday night at 10:30pm when I went to pick up, they offered to walk me to my car... it's Whyte Avenue, and later on it can be a bit... well, uncomfortable for women alone. Who DOES that anymore?! I REALLY appreciated the offer and concern for my well- being. I love coming in here to browse - and I admit, in the past couple of years of pandemic, I haven't spent any time in any business. At that time of night, and with fewer crowds on a Friday night, I might just have to come and browse again soon. I will definitely be requesting other books online - what an efficient way to shop!

I am a fan of this book store…read more I am old school and buy books to read. I just have a thing about holding a book and reading it vs online or on a tablet. They have more than just books. They've got games, toys, and tonnes of other items to browse. There's also a Starbucks if you want to buy and coffee and book and sit and read for a bit. My niece and I checked it out for her spring break as they had a week of kids activities. It was super cool... and I learned about new toys that are on the market that I was in the dark about. The event started off with an employee reading a book t all of the kids before they went to the different stations. The different stations for the kids were coloring, play games, and having an interactive experience. Indigo head office also provided grab bags for the first 50 kids or so through the door and we were lucky enough to show up on time and my niece got one.
