Back in 2008 after the FBI raided Bernie Madoff Industries, LLC, I firmly believe that Sunrun Solar thought they got a deal hiring some of their former accountants. This is the only way I can explain the accounting practices Sunrun uses in their billing department. Each year with the "resolution fee" or "top up fee"--the mysterious charge that customers get annually based on "overproduction" or that amount of energy produced that is above what was calculated by Sunrun. That energy that came from the sun free of charge from nature, you the customer are now on the hook for--you'd think it's a good thing to make more of something that is necessary--you'd think there would be some sort of reward for that. Not so much. Every year this happens in addition to the normal monthly charge. They won't tell you about this during the sales pitch. I recently sold my house and paid my Solar lease off--to the tune of around $24,000. That should have been the end of it. You'd think that once you request a payoff amount, when you get that amount from a business that's it, done deal. Like when you trade off your car, right? Not so much with Sunrun. I was charged an additional $400 a month after paying my lease off. Their explanation? There were delays and errors in the beginning of our lease (8 years ago) that weren't factored into the lease payoff we received. I've concluded that there's nothing I can do to get my money back so I'm going to pay it forward with my words. I wouldn't recommend Sunrun or any solar lease for that matter to anyone. Sunrun's accounting practice are well below acceptable standards at best, criminal possibly in other cases. They're aware of this and don't care to fix it. This company is a JOKE! I was on the road as one of their POS driver cut me off as I was driving on the onramp to the 215fwy. The driver purposely cut me off very aggressively once I merged onto the freeway he drove in front of me and slammed his breaks that caused me to break almost causing an accident because I was trying to get his information (the truck only shows the company name SUNRUN, no phone number) so I took a picture of his license plate/truck #. Not only was he aggressive with me but with the other cars driving in and out of lanes. Very unsafe and didn't care, why? Because their drivers cover each others a$$. I called the company numbers that comes up and each time (4 times) they would answer I asked to speak to a manager or supervisor they rerouted my call to the same answering service. Do not waste your time or money with Sunrun Solar. I have had nothing but problems. I had Sunrun install solar panels to my house. First problem was the roof started leaking under where my solar panels were installed. The roof leak went into my garage. Second problem was Sunrun subcontracts with Troy's roofing and they reroofed the wrong part of the roof where the leek was. Troy's roofers did damaged to one of my cars. Third problem was I had Sunrun install a Tesla Batterie wall in my house. The process started in October of 2024 and we are in April 2025 and system is still not hooked up or working. Again this company's has been NO help at all considering what we've already been through with them when we purchased our first system. Several years ago we leased panels from Sunrun understanding that by leasing they were responsible for keeping the system running. We had also hoped to lower our electric bill. Our bill was higher than ever and we were also still paying Edison. A few years later sunrun convinced my husband that adding more panels would help with electric consumption and therefore lower our electric bill. It did not. We have two bills now from Sunrun. In 2019,a Sunrun sales rep came to our house and sold us a 20 panel system and battery. The total cost was $32,947. Our monthly electric bill averaged $235 for our 1575 sq ft home. The sales rep assured us that we would have little to no electrical expense with solar. Our monthly payment for our Sunrun equipment was $172 for the first 16 months and $246 following. For 2020 thru 2023 we received an end of the year bill from Edison for about $1000. At the end of 2024, that annual electric bill was $2937 - more than our electric bill before solar. In 2022, a Sunrun sales rep at Costco told us that we should not be receiving a large bill from Edison if we have properly placed panels and a battery. In April 2024, Sunrun informed us that our battery was not working and needed to be fixed/replaced. We believe that our battery NEVER worked properly. Sunrun did not get the battery working until August 23, 2024. In Jan 2025, after receiving the $2937 electric bill, we called Sunrun. We were told that a case manager would call us back. They didn't. On Feb 4, we called again. The first rep said that our system is not working properly. He said fixing it would be at OUR EXPENCE. Then he transferred me to another rep who claimed our system was working, but half the panels are shaded by our tree and one panel received almost no sun. We had the tree when the panels were installed and have even had it trimmed. The rep stated that there was no better option given the shape of our roof. The sales rep that sold us the system did not disclose this information. He promised that the panels would generate plenty of electricity, and with a battery we would not have to worry about additional electric bills. We feel deceived and cheated by Sunrun. My wife and I moved into our current Murrieta home in 2018. The home was sold with a SunRun solar system already installed and still under a Power performance guarantee, which meant we had to basically pay a monthly lease or purchase fee to Sunrun. We really didn't have much say in who we used for solar. About two years ago, I found out the system had only been performing to 50% for the last 3 years. I found this out because a technician from SunRun came to my home and told me that. He asked to go up on the roof to take a look. When he came down he confirmed the system is only working at 1/2 capacity. He told me SunRun would come out to remove the defective panels and replace them with new panels. He could not provide me with a time estimate because of the COVID epidemic. Six months ago, I noticed one of the two converters on the side of my home was blinking read and had an error message. Prior to this I had always noticed two blinking green lights. I called Sunrun to find out if they had perhaps repaired the system when we were not at home. I was informed that my panels were no longer being manufactured (basically obsolete) so they were checking all their warehouses around the country for panels that might fit our current system. A few months later, I called back and was informed they were still searching for compatible panels. They told me if they couldn't find compatible panels, they would have to redesign our entire system, remove the current system, and install a completely new system. I said, "That sounds good to me, when are you going to do it?" Response? "Well you don't understand, Sir. Designing and installing a new system takes a long time. The design department will need time for the design and then there's all the permits that need to be obtained from the city and from the airport near you. I told the "case manager" I was talking to that that wasn't my problem. We were paying for solar energy we were not getting and more for electricity. The CM arranged for us to start getting a discount every month until the system was fixed. The discount is generally about $105 per month, which is certainly not acceptable considering the cost of electricity in CA. When I asked for a time estimate to job start, he told me, "It might be a while." He also promised I would get an email from him every two weeks with an update. That happened once and has not happened since. Every time I have called customer service to ask to speak to my case manager, who I won't shame at this time, I get the run around. When I ask for his director number, I'm told, "Sorry I don't have it." I'm told they'll leave a message for him to call me back. This has actually happened only one time. I agree with most of the other SunRun ratings on Yelp. They are unreliable and have very poor customer service. Someone came to our door on a white hoverboard. I answered asking if they needed help with something. He started to give his pitch and I politely told him we were not interested. He continued and I told him several times no. Eventually I closed the door because he wouldn't take no. Disgruntled, he muttered something under his breath and walked away. That same day he was seen on camera passing by, slowing down and looking at the property. DO NOT GET SUNRUN - COMPLETE SCAM COMPANY They said our system was up and running on 6/30/21 so I was running the AC more thinking the solar was working.... however it was not actually producing electricity until 8/18/21 and I received a $700 bill from the main electricity company because of this. On top of that, Sunrun is also billing me $250 from the period of 6/30 to 7/30 for 0 kw of electricity produced.... I called customer service two weeks ago, never got a called back, was on hold for 2.5 hours today and spoke someone overseas who told me that it's not sunruns fault the system wasn't producing. I went to loop in the solar installer on the call to talk to sunrun and then they are no longer on the call... just silence. THE SCAM OF ALL SCAMS! YOUR UTILITY COSTS WILL INCREASE, NOT DECREASE. Everything NEGATIVE you read about this company is true. The POWER PURCHASE AGREEMENT is a scam. It does not save you any money on your utility bills and gives Sunrun all the tax rebates and financial benefits of going Solar. They are in partnership with Southern California Edison and other major utility companies. Sunrun and your utility companies basically use your home as a makeshift powerplant that doesn't save you any money, instead benefits both of them financially while holding your home hostage. for 20 years. We have plenty more roof space that could have been used for panels and actually allow us to benefit from solar. They are master manipulators who know how to avoid helping customers with legitimate grievances by pushing customers buttons and upsetting them so they don't want to call. They stated under his leadership they are encouraged to lie to people and give false information. They are encouraged to rush customers through the contract so they question it. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH SUNRUN - SunRun Installation issue 6/7/23 Sunrun came to install our system. This did not go well and was not completed. Sunrun will openly lie to their customers about timelines. They know that once they start construction the customer has no recourse regarding their incompetence, and lack of performance, to pull out of the contract. They are clearly understaffed (I assume by design to make more profit), some of the staff is incompetent, and the scheduler will lie to you about when things will get resolved. Day 1 Friday June 7, 2024 Issue 1 - The Sunrun site inspector, a young 20 something kid, didn't know enough about code to notify the installation team that the Sunrun panel would need to be installed 8' away from the home panel. As such they didn't have the right length of wire which delayed the panel installation for 3 hours. The rest of the team installed all the panels. Issue 2 - The installation team do not bring drop cloths to protect the work area, nor do they clean up after themselves. in our carpeted garage. There was drywall dust and scraps all over our TV/Stereo, DirecTV box as well as all over boxes that were below where they drilled a hole and affixed a J-box and conduit. Issue 3. The foreman on our job Luis, didn't bother to upload photos of the "completed job" until I got on the phone and demanded status on Tuesday. Which is 4 day (3 business days) after installation. Finally on Tuesday the 11th Sunrun inspected the pictures and found they install team installed a breaker in the wrong box (incompetence). I was then informed the earlies they could come to fix their mistake was two weeks I told Sunrun that was unacceptable, they need to clean up their mistakes at on install before starting another install. They then said they could come the following Monday 6/17 - they no showed. Understand they can't schedule the city to come out to inspect until Sunrun internally approves the installation. Issue 3 6/17/24 Sunrun didn't show up to correct their installation error regarding putting the wrong breaker in the wrong panel. First thing in the morning I called and verified arrival time was 12:30-3pm. No one showed up and I had to call to find out what happened. The two people assigned to my account somehow weren't around and I was redirected to someone that could only send a message It is not 5:04pm, assuming they are blowing off their commitment. I've been emailing and calling and even contacted Mary Powell CBO. They are still taking my monthly payment yet my system's been down and they're completely unresponsive. I've been completely neglected and left in the dark and I've been begging for help. There is no way to get to talk to anybody. We have had a horrible experience with the installation process. Our contract called for 23 panels to be installed but when SunRun contracted out to Freedom Forever to install the installed 25 lower producing panels in order to make up for the lack of efficiency and never asked us for approval. Our contract states a certain type of panel and the ones installed do not reflect that.
