I've been coming to get my haircut here for about 5-years now and I still don't have much to say about this place. They get the job done and it's cheap. I have a very basic haircut that's kind of hard to screw up. The weekday ladies are good. Very friendly, ask you about your day, and after 2+ years they finally got my name right. As basic as my haircut is, they take their time cutting it and making sure I'm happy when I leave. The weekend ladies however, don't have a very good sense of creating an "experience" for you. The only question they have "What do you want?" Nothing about how my weekend is going or whether or not I even like my haircut! The haircut is very rushed and you just get a vibe that they're just there to get the job done quick, swipe your card, and get you on out the door. This is not just a one time weekend haircut for me either.. I've had a few on the weekends and it's always the same thing. If you just care about getting your haircut done, don't want to spend much money, and could care less about your interactions with your stylist, then come here. Sometimes a man just needs his hair cut. This morning was the morning for me. I finally got to the point where it could wait no longer. I recently decided that it was time to find a new spot and hence, I set off on an adventure today. First I held down that familiar round button on the bottom of my iPhone "Siri is there a barber shop near me"? The reply was swift (got to love Siri) she gave me a list to work with, I quickly zeroed in on a place called Joes, nothing but 5 star reviews, hard to believe that Joe has never upset a customer, this guy has to be paying some people to stay quiet. I made my way quickly to Joes only to find a disappointing realization that Joes was not only no longer Joes (going by a new name) but also closed on Mondays, which actually makes more sense than a middle aged man trying to find a place to get his hair cut on a Monday morning. With only Siri's bad leads and nothing else to go on, I started driving north on 185th just waiting for something to pop out at me. I found it! Sunset beauty & barber and they were open! I hopped straight onto yelp and was pleased with what I saw. Great reviews (mostly from older men but they said that they have been coming for years and seemed very pleased). I decided to give it a shot. Immediately upon entrance I was greeted with a friendly voice "it will be just a short time". This sounded promising even with a few people were already seated and waiting. I realized right away that the place was very quiet, the only sounds coming from the three clippers running with all three chairs full and three women who seemed so focused on their work that they did not say a word. I started to look around for something that might keep my attention while I waited in the quiet little room. What I saw was worn down furniture and cabinets and some old photos on the walls with portraits of young men with 90's style haircuts. Not really warm and inviting just somewhat worn down. Just as I started thinking about how the place could really use makeover I was called up to take a seat. The haircut was good and didn't take long at all, the stylist was friendly and reminded me of how I should get my hair cut in the future. Despite being very quick she conferred with me several times and made sure that my hair was cut the way that I wanted it cut. Here comes the bad...... As I entered my vehicle it hit me all at once, she didn't dust all of the little hairs off of me before uncovering me and therefore I was off to the start of a very itchy day! So as decent of an experience this was, I can say without a doubt that the itchy feeling that I have had all day will always serve as a reminder to me to stay far away from this little shop! I still gave it four stars because the haircut was fast and good, only cost 11 dollars, and staff was friendly. read more

I love going here to get my hair cut and have been going to these ladies for years. They're friendly and as I've gotten to know them, they've become familiar with family events and want to get to know you. You're not just another number to them like you would be at another barber shop. I'm not that picky when it comes to getting my hair cut, but that's probably due to them never messing up and the vast experience they have there. When I started going there years ago, I was leery about having the other women cut my hair besides Young. Throughout the years I've learned that no matter who cuts my hair, it's going to be done great. The staff here is remarkable and always does what they can to get it perfect for you... Yes even You, (the picky complaining S.O.B.)... hahaha. You know who I'm talking about. An Asian lady cut my hair. when I showed her the style I want,her first response was she could not do it since my hair was different. I said, OK, I want the length at least. Her nails are long and sharp and they hurt me a lot. After she thought she finished, without asking my opinion, she directly kicked me off the chair and said done. This is the worst salon and the reason I went is because my stylist in another shop is on vacation. After went home, I found 2 strands of hair are so long and I need to cut myself. So bad experience. Well last time I go there and I've been going there on and off since I was in my mid 40's, 67 now. Seems they keep retiring the good one's there because they get all the business. My teenage daughter got her hair cut from Liz and she was great!!! We walked in expecting A lady named Young to cut my daughters hair but she rudely said we had to wait because there was two other people ahead of us and then said she's not good at cutting girls hair. We were glad that Liz was not busy because my daughter was very happy. She took the time to ask my daughter how she wanted her hair and also how I would like her hair!!! She could not have spent more time on us, it was perfect!!! While we were waiting on Liz to finish up on the guy she was working on he said, thanks for making me handsome again. How sweet!!! $12 for a trim is not bad. Unfortunately I had the same woman nip (cut) me in the back of the neck 2x's on two different trims. You get what you get here so trim cautiously! As far as time I was in and out in 15 minutes or less. This place is a give and take for value. I hope she decontaminated her clippers. read more

I just got a haircut there and I was completely dissatisfied. I'm not sure of her name but I had my hair cut by one of the Vietnamese ladies there. I asked the lady for a 1 guard on the sides & back and to scissor cut the top. I verbally said "scissor cut" while I physically showed her the length I wanted it to be which was finger length. Easy, right? She started out using scissors for the top and then used clippers to even it out. ??? I thought she was cleaning up my fade (which looks horrible, btw) but she was actually clipping the hair I asked her to scissor cut. On top of that, she cut off my bangs!! No warning whatsoever. I thought she was done and then she grabbed the scissors and cut 'em off. They ended up being shorter than the rest of my hair. Ridiculous. I will NEVER go back there again. Worst money on a haircut I have ever spent. There are very few things in this world more infuriating than getting a bad haircut. You can't do anything about it, especially when it's too short to fix. YOU have to walk around looking like an idiot even though someone was completely responsible. read more

I usually go to a person who charges 45 dollars. I was not able to get to see her and decided to get my hair cut here while my son was getting his. I would recommend that a woman with medium length hair get a shampoo first even though I was not offered it, and didn't see a sink. It seems hard for the stylist to comb my hair with just a wet spray. When she cut my hair either the scissors were dull or it was hard to cut my hair when not all the way wet. When I saw the finished cut, I was not very impressed, but it actually was a decent cut. So I may go back as long as I can get a shampoo. I figure the cut was worth the 12 dollars I paid ... This is my first yelp review and it's sad to say the only reason I was inclined to write it is due to the atrocious nature of this haircut experience. This was a nightmare come to life. I probably sat down in the chair for maybe 5 min if I'm being generous, and I had asked for a little trim (half an inch specifically) the lady then chopped off what was about 1.5-2 inches. Then, when she was "finished" after literally 3 min, my hair on one side was completely uneven. Maybe my experience was an outlier but later I called and asked to speak to a manager about a refund and this was the response I got verbatim "she'll be in sometime". I asked when? "Sometime". Does she have an email I can contact her with? "No". This place is terrible. read more

You will not have a bad experience if you ask for Liz. I was going to Liz before she joined Sunset Beauty. She is so nice (and funny) and gives you what you want in a haircut. And for the price ($12) you can't beat it! I went to Liz when haircuts were $15 and then the salon charged an extra $2 to get the stylist of choice. Only drawback is that Liz works M-W-F. Not always convenient but she will work with you. read more
