Grand Lake Theatre was built in gorgeous art deco architecture, and makes you feel like you've been thrown back into the heydays of when visiting the cinema was a formal outing. There's a chandelier hanging above the ticket booth at the entrance, and there's a grand staircase with giant paintings and more chandeliers leading up to the theaters on the second floor. Most recently, I came here to see Frankenstein the second-to-last day it was being shown here. It was my second time seeing Frankenstein in theaters, and Grand Lake was one of the theaters listed that had it playing, so I came out here on a Tuesday night to enjoy their $6 Tuesday deals. Ngl, parking in this area is absolutely horrid. I spent at least 20 minutes circling the block, driving up and down Grand Ave, and driving through the residential areas to find parking. I was very hesitant to park in the parking lot that's just a short walk down the street from the theater because I saw homeless people loitering in that parking lot, so I was very nervous of parking my car there. Ultimately, I did resort to parking there when I had no other options, and I am very grateful my car was fine.

Grungy, unique vibe-- from the reels of film tape festooning the lobby, to the eclectic assortment of couches and artwork in the open auditorium. Pays homage to Oakland quirkiness all throughout the space. Variety of snacks and drinks available for purchase at the cashier. Staff can be a bit aloof and the dishes were not super clean, but great atmosphere overall~~~

The ones we sat in reclined. From what I read, you can order food and drinks to be delivered to your seat if you have a table in front of you. We did but we had already eaten. If we had known, we probably would've ordered food there. Next time! Fun night!

The single line for the concessions stand was quite long on a Saturday afternoon. There was another concessions stand upstairs leading to the second floor auditoriums, but it was closed. There was also an attached cafe offering a more extensive menu of food and drinks. The auditorium had recliner seats, but the back rests didn't recline much, mainly the foot rests were noticeable. There was just a single aisle in the room, but enough space between rows to not bump into seats while walking down the row. Temperature was perfect, sound and picture quality no problems, and parking options included a lot across the street (2-hour limit), a garage around the corner on Oak Street (75 cents per hour), and street parking in the area if you're lucky.

I took the ferry over from San Francisco just to come here. Did I get influenced by an Instagram post? Yes. But this is one of those rare instances where the hype matched with reality. The inside of Cinelounge is so cutely decorated and perfect for a friend to hang out or date. There are two theaters/auditoriums inside and on this particular day they were showing number of popular movies. I ended up really enjoying the couch experience. Their couches were clean, comfortable (especially for someone who has back problems like me) perfect firmness for a long movie, and it wasn't too crowded on the weekend. I wanted to gatekeep this spot but it's too good not to share. Would be so fun to come back again soon.

From the lobby decor to the couches, everything about this theater shouts dedication and love. Truly you can see the effort dedicated to this project, and it's well-worth the drive up to Tiburon in order to experience this small corner-tucked movie theater. They also host events for community-building here, and I find that so exciting! (For example, they led a daddy-daughter workshop where they hosted breakfast and taught dads how to braid their kids' hair). My only qualm is that the food is a bit pricey, but overall the experience has been so cozy and inviting each time I'm there! I've now forced two people to make the hour-long drive from my home to Tiburon in order to watch a movie here, and I'll gladly do it again!

I'll give it to the Elmwood, achieving their tier of hypocrisy is no small accomplishment…read more We went to a National Theatre Live screening of Hamlet on Jan 22. Here are two of the preview videos that were run before the show: Preview #1: Rialto Cinemas promo featuring a clip of Sean Baker's Oscar speech in which he advocates for movie studios to continue producing and releasing films specifically for live cinema, because contemporary American society is heavily divided, and going to the movies in a theater alongside other people in one's community helps push back against that divide by bringing people together in a shared experience. Preview #2: Land acknowledgment showing the theater's own public affiliation to one hotly contested political extreme, making some audience members feel allied in tribal loyalty to the theater, while other audience members feel alienated and outraged before they even get to the main attraction. Which one is it, Rialto Cinemas? Are you trying to bring people together, or rip them apart? You're a private business, and you can do whichever one you like. Have the courage to pick.
