I would not recommend eating here. Food was not edible. Atmosphere needs losts of work as well. Dirty and not pleasant.

Little hole in the wall restaurant that could frankly be passed by. T or C doesn't have a big selection and most restaurants are mom and pop types. This place disappointed. I asked for the Mexican plate but it was a plate with tex Mexican flavors. It came with a tamale that was nondescript at best. That said, it was the best thing on the plate. The taco wasn't too bad for a taco bell shell type taco. The enchilada tasted like the kind the school cafeteria served. The chile relleno was bland. The rice was a little on the undercooked side. Walked in to try this place for the first time. We stood patiently and not in a hurry and was rudely ignored for 5 minutes. My husband finally asked if we should seat ourselves and the waitress without even making eye contact mumbled yes. Granted she was busy and it looked like she was the only one there, but it really doesn't take much effort to simply greet someone and smile. At this point we determined we didn't come to eat and support a local business to be treated poorly, so walked out and found another spot with much friendlier service. There's nothing fancy about the Sunset Grill. Heck, when we walked in, we were the only customers and the parking lot looked empty. But the food... OMG, the food! As I eat Keto, I had a bunless cheeseburger with bacon and it was heavenly! And huge! The burgers are a full 8 oz and cooked to order! I also choose the side salad as my side. The salad dressing (I choose balsamic vinaigrette) comes in a large container and tasted homemade! My husband ate the chips and salsa that came complimentary when we sat down and said they were tasty. He ordered a Philly cheesesteak and subbed green chile for the peppers and onions. He said the chile was hot (score!) and the sandwich was great! In fact, it smelled so good that the couple who came in while we were eating ordered the same thing because it smelled so good! He also ordered the onion rings that we had read about in previous Yelp reviews as his side. Let me tell you: you NEED the onion rings! They are hand breaded and perfect! The Sunset Grill is a decent place to grab a bite when in town to visit Elephant Butte. It offers average and tasty New Mexican food at an affordable price. After eating lunch here it's no secret that most of the people are locals. However, during the busy season tourists make their way here as well. If you're going to make this stop I would order the New Mexican food. The portions are enormous and most of it is made from scratch on site. This includes there red and green chile and other key items like the guacamole and salsa. If there's one thing on the menu that you should try it's the carne adovada. You can either get it as a plate or inside a sopapilla. If you're going to order it as a stuffed sopapilla be prepared for a massive amount of toppings and cheese. Is enough food for a cow to eat. Meanwhile, nobody leaves here hungry. And I would recommend ordering the guacamole to start. It's got a lot of flavor and it's made fresh every day period One of the highlights here are the breakfast burritos period it's likely the signature item of this restaurant. They are enormous and if you're heading out on the lake for the day it be a good idea to stop and get one first. Doing so might keep your full the rest of the day. When in town there's plenty of local restaurants like this. This one is a safe bet. read more

I love there food that's here but I do see some ppl that are being very rude and disrespectful to the waitresses I mean when they need a certain spot/table for a certain special senior citizen that means a lot to them people should really understand why and I totally understand if I had a good and delicious restaurant like these people do and they make good burgers and I looove there french fries and their service is really good so if y'all end up in there please understand and be very patient. The food here is great, but speaking from an experienced restaurant cook, they make one dish at a time and it takes you 20-30 minutes or longer to get your food. The cooks here need to be retrained on how to get big orders out with in 10-15 minutes tops. Stopped in after soaking in the hot springs down the road. The ambiance is a good old-fashioned diner. It's like stepping back in time, which matches the the town. We loved reading all the quirky signs and listening to the locals while dining. We ordered the onion rings because we heard they're famous and they did not disappoint! We also had the bean and cheese sopapillas. They were the highlight of the meal. The beans were delicious and there was perfect crisp on the sopapillas. I will always remember this meal. read more

Absolutely fantastic. I'm a country boy from TN and the food was like someone's abuela invited you to Sunday dinner. I also had the Stuffed sopillias with carne adovado. The pork was perfectly cooked tender and delicious. It came on a big oval plate with cheese beans rice and Chile sauce and you couldn't put any more food on it without sideboards. The price was very reasonable. The place is humble not "bad" but they're in the delicious food business not the interior decoration business and they know their business. Don't be a snob about aesthetics because you'll miss some fantastic food. read more

I would NOT recommend this place! We got there and waited for a good 15 minutes to THEN be told we could sit ourselves but only a specific area. They didn't even offer us the other side? Once we sat down we waited a good 20 min before we were finally offered a menu and a chance to order drinks. Waiter was NOT attentive at all with us. The waiter almost seemed as if she were avoiding us, she didn't ask us once if we needed refills on chips or our drinks. But she was attentive with every other person who walked in or who were already seated. We finally got up to leave, and went to pay for just our drinks. THEN the waiter attempted to be nicer when she saw we were agitated and offered to get our food to go. While she was boxing our food up she put her fingers and hands all over our food while boxing it. Cleanliness and professionalism is OFF the table for these folks! The food that was given to us was very dry, we didn't receive the chili we asked for, we ordered the tamale entree and the entree that included cheese enchilada, chili Relleno, taco and tamale and it was DISGUSTING. We also ordered two dr. Peppers that tasted like complete syrup, not even Dr Pepper!! I also called a few hours later because of the fact of having to check out and leaving at a reasonable time to make it home at a decent hour and the manager was completely inconsiderate of our visit!!! I asked for a refund for our food that was TOUCHED BY THE WAITOR, after not receiving our chili, and the poor service and she was absolutely rude and unapologetic and REFUSED TO GIVE ME A REFUND over the entrees?!?! We drove into town after taking the Geronimo trail all morning long. Hungry and inexperienced with the area we found a place off of the main road in a town called "Truth or Consequences." Inside the Sunset Grill the ambience is nothing special, but a cool A/C and ample seating was welcoming. The menu has a great variety of dishes. We ordered the chicken quesadilla and it arrived hot and fast with abundant portions. The salsa is fresh and flavorful, not too spicy and with chips for free. The staff are very friendly and attentive even on off hours. Several people who came in were known by name and this place appears to have loyal clientele. The burgers were fresh and delicious and lots if fries. Our waitress refilled our drinks multiple times and was very attentive. The prices are very reasonable and this place is a great bargain with wonderful service!!! read more

Walked in and was not greeted just told to take a seat any where. Very grumpy waiter. Looked for a booth that did not have the upholstery sticking out. Not much luck. I will start with the good stuff. The waiter was nice. He really cared about his job. Now, I had to say that the food was absolutely disgusting. I ordered the Philly Au Jus, and the meat was such I wouldn't feed my dog. The bread was somehow burned and tasteless. The Au Jus was just beef broth, absolutely tasteless. I took one bite and I was done. It killed my appetite. The French fries were good...French fries are good and easy. My wife ordered a Rueben sandwich, but asked that it be made with turkey. The turkey was bad. She said it tasted awful, and when she pulled it out it looked old and gross. I would pass this one by. It's definitely overpriced for what it is. read more

The place was PACKED with locals which - at least for me - is a good sign. It was a small town diner. The service was a little slow, but come on...there wasn't an empty table in the place and the staff is small. One woman seemed to be trying to hold down the fort with the help of a guy and a woman who mysteriously showed up occasionally delivering food and familiarly chatting with some of the customers. We weren't in any rush so the slow service wasn't unbearable. Plus, everyone who worked there seemed genuinely nice and courteous. Sure...we were presumptuous and poured our own refills of coffee instead of waiting for our very busy waitress, but her quick and funny quip about making us family was not nasty at all. Just fun. Once we ordered, the food arrived shortly afterwards. It was pretty good, too! This place had the most tender adovada with a depth of flavor that isn't a component in most recipes. It was a pleasant surprise - for breakfast nonetheless! The red chile may be the favorite of most New Mexicans, but we also found that the green chile had a nice flavor make-up to it with a fair amount of heat. It must be a New Mexican thing, but our orders all came with sopapillas. Puffy, hot, and de-li-ci-ous. THE WORLD'S WORST WAITRESS! Seriously, just a horrible human being. They were out of multiple items we tried to order, helped people that came in after us before addressing us @ all, decor from the 1950's (& not cool retro, dirty/old retro), chips & salsa tasted God awful (there should be a law against serving that quality of salsa in New Mexico), the menu had no decent meals so we ordered pie (which they had to check to see if they had) & because we declined a $4 scoop of ice cream the waitress went to the kitchen staff & began to loudly, in plain view mock our table & spew all kinds of hateful comments. The cooks were just busting up laughing. Needless to say we cancelled our order & left. The waitress did not apologize & still charged us for the one drink ordered. Mind you previous to her behavior we were @ no point rude, nor complained. We just didn't want to pay $4 for a scoop of ice cream. Who would? You can buy a carton for that price! Maybe just a case of small town locals being mean to "outsiders" but wow, how sad for these full grown adults to behave like this. Avoid this restaurant like the plague! read more
