We have boarded our German Shorthaired Pointer here a few times now for both longer and shorter stays. The staff is friendly, the grounds are clean, and they are very reasonably priced. Most importantly though, our dog always comes home happy and tired! Our dog tends to get separation anxiety and we always feel guilty leaving him anywhere for an extended period of time. I feel like Sunset gets overlooked quite a bit because of Sycamore Lanes, but do not fear - this place is amazing! I've taken Gizmo, my overweight Miniature Pinscher, here I think two or three times now. Each time the staff has been SO great! They even text me little videos of Gizmo when she's playing with other puppies, saying how great she's doing! I don't know about anyone else, but whenever I leave my dog I get really anxious about if she's okay and how she's doing. Seeing that 15 second video of her running around the yard having a blast is exactly the kind of reassurance I need! The fun part about Sunset is that a lot of their facility is outdoors, so the pups don't spend all day cooped up in a kennel. Of course they sleep inside at night, but if you're like me and live in an apartment or someplace without a fenced-in yard then it's literally like taking your dog to day camp where they get to run around outside and be puppies! Not only does Gizmo love it, but my checkbook loves it too. They don't tack on a bunch of high fees for playtimes and the dogs get a couple lengthy potty breaks throughout the day. Took our Chesapeake here for a couple of nights while gone to so cal. We usually take her to a kennel about 60 miles away but just didn't have the time. After research I really liked this place. Gave them a call and knew they were gonna be great from the get go. They asked if our dog had anything to be aware of and I explained that she is a Chesapeake and when they are excited/happy their smile can be mistaken for being snappy/mean cuz they lift their lifts and show their teeth. They were already aware and said they knew about Chessie smiles. When we dropped her off I didn't get to go in because I just had hip surgery but the grounds looked amazing. They also do training there so I know they are more than just "sitters" if that makes sense. Although I will always be loyal to our kennel in Carmichael, I am so glad we found Sunset Kennels and feel completely comfortable with Sage staying when it's needed. Finally found a place I am comfortable leaving my fur babies! Very friendly staff, prompt in returning phone calls. Tour showed the entire facility to be clean and organized. Walking through the kennels to see where my pups would stay together in an indoor / outdoor run allowed me to see that the pets on premise were in clean kennels. The price *might* seem a tad higher than others in the area BUT all of those other places nickel and dime you! This much to bring your own food, that much for playtime. When I first called, the woman on the phone was very kind to me, answering all of the questions I had as a first-time customer of theirs. Usually when I previously boarded my cat at other places, I was responsible for bringing proof of my cat's vaccinations, but Sunset Kennels went out of their way to get them for me from Honey's Veterinarian. I didn't have to stress about it. I could tell that they prioritize animal safety. They gave me updates on how she was doing everytime I called. They're really great people. Our dogs really seem to love it here and the prices are very reasonable. The dogs always seem happy and healthy when we come to pick them up, they also never fight when they go with the staff and don't freak out when we pull into the parking lot. We also have never picked up the dogs any worse for the wear and that is a real concern at the previous places, one time our basset came home urinating blood! Never here though, in fact they are very concerned with their care and have even suggested when the dogs stool just wasn't quite right which was a real relief. The staff is also very friendly and family run which is a treat to work with these days. The facilities have always been in good shape and other kennels clean when we are there. They also have never stopped us from going with our dogs to see their home for next few days which I think says a lot, if the kennel is not willing to let you see what is behind the curtain stay away. They even have bathed the dogs or at least a quick rinse and some air freshener, by far and away the best kennel we have used and they are our go to place. Oh did I mention they recognize the dogs and know them by name... No we are not that frequent of a visitor they just really like what they do! A+++ read more

Will the experience be stressful for my animals? These are all questions that I asked myself before going on a 4 day vacation. There are plenty of kennels in this area and I checked them all out. I wanted to make sure I was leaving them in the best hands. After a lot of research and time, I decided to stick with this establishment. Its located out in the vineyards. It is grassy and has a great feel to the place. The owners live onsite (which was a plus for me) and reassured me that my animals wouldn't be neglected. The prices are reasonable. Especially for me; I have two 4 lb chihuahuas and I kennel them together. So I pay full price for the first and receive a discount on the second, which is nice on the wallet. The kennels are always clean, not only visually but also smells clean. The staff is very friendly and very knowledgeable. I've been a repeat customer many times. I try to schedule my dogs to stay a night here at least once every month to kind of keep them in the practice and so they stay comfortable. My dogs love the staff. I've never had a bad experience. It is nice too, because they offer spa services as well. So a nail trimming can be scheduled while they are there. Two birds with one stone. Will go here, without question, in the future. read more

A very bad experience. I spoke with the owner, who reserved me a space, without disclosing the days they would be closed or the cancellation policy. I spoke with her in the later afternoon on Friday and went to check out the kennel on Saturday morning, all with intention to enroll my pet, after getting him kennel cough medicines. However, they were closed and refused to lot me see and I cancelled immediately. I even left a message to cancel and call me right away. However, they never called me back and charged cancellation fee of 15%. When I called her, the delusional owner named Candice stated that she was going to call me. In any case, I have had a terrible experience with them and I hear that some dogs have gotten sick too. The business is a bad business and I will never subject my pet to their care. Stay away from them. They are unprofessional and shady business I just had a friend bring her dog back sick from the kennel. I was told that the dog had all his required shots. It seems that hygiene is not a priority with the kennel. They overfilled the facility with 100 plus dogs, although they lack services, staff, and physical facilities. A greedy owner. I have taken my dog here now about 6 or 7 times and I have always been very happy with the service and care. But today, I was really happy when I picked up my dog. There is a gorgeous garden around the front of this place, and they have many fruit jams that are handmade and sold here. I was craving tomatoes so I asked if they sell them. Alas, they do not:-( But, the owner said I could have some! Rachel who was behind the desk offered to help, as I had my dog and baby in tow so had no extra hands for picking. Best kennels we have ever used. I never worry about our dogs while we are away, in fact I almost forget about them because I know they are in such good hands. The dogs absoutely love it here, and are greeted so lovingly by the staff each time, even if it has been six months since their last stay. They are very reasonably priced and the location is lovely, shaded grassy play areas, and very clean indoor kennels with outdoor runs. They are happy to feed your dogs thier food from home (if desired) at the time and portion you request, and dogs that are used to being together can be kenneled together at a discount (bonus!). read more

This is our favorite place to kennel our dogs (and the dogs love it too!). We have two large dogs that we need to kennel for the occasional vacation. This place is the best. When we call enough in advance we get a large dog room that they both can share and it has a small outdoor dog run attached to each separate large room. My dogs get to exercise and run around everyday. The staff plays fetch with them and runs out their crazy energy. I even get to see them on the Sunset Garden Retreat Facebook page. I am an avid traveler and my mother had long been my dog sitter. Due to some recent changes, I had to seek out another option. So, I searched for dog boarding services in San Joaquin County. Upon reviewing websites and touring facilities, I was most impressed by Sunset Kennels. The staff who greeted me, Allie was kind, professional and knowledgeable. I love that they provide a family rate (I have 2 dogs) and an additional discount for recently adopted dogs. During the tour, I saw the staff prepping food in the kitchen and playing outdoors with other dogs.
