Wow -- first time playing here, and I have to say I'm seriously impressed. The customer service is STUPENDOUS! The starter was super helpful with tips, and the ranger was out there doing his best to keep things moving along. The pace was a little slow (normally something that drives me crazy ), but honestly, seeing the effort from the staff made all the difference. Easy check-in, fair pricing ($50 twilight rate for 18 with a cart), a beautiful layout, a moderately challenging course, nicely maintained fairways, and excellent greens -- you really can't beat this public/park district gem. Yes, the wait could have been a little painful, but with the weather this gorgeous, I honestly couldn't complain. Sometimes you just have to enjoy the day and take in the views! If I lived in this town and played this course regularly and they spent all the money that they did rehabbing this golf course I'd be really upset. The last time I played here it was cartpath only, why do you ask? Because they didn't fix the drainage problem. That's right, they spent millions of dollars and there is still water sitting on the fairways, ridiculous. Also why didn't they fix the cart paths out on the course? Some of them are so bad you have to drive on the grass. Again, why? Possibly the worse part about this whole mess is they don't tell you it's cartpath only until they take your money to play golf and a cart. What are you supposed to do? Go get your money back, load your clubs back in you're car and say good bye to your foresome? I hate that sh*t! The good part is is that they did a really nice job on the clubhouse, the dining room is much improved and they now actually have a small pro shop. The outdoor Patio is very nice and the grounds around the clubhouse armuch improved. read more

Alright so I'll start with the positive. The course I WELL MAINTAINED and the clubhouse is quaint yet fit for purpose. Staff was nice and I did not experience the "surly" nature that a previous Yelp reviewer left. Golf carts are nice & updated with GPS technology, and even have USB Chargers which is a nice touch. Great drainage on the course and honestly I didn't experience a soggy fairway, green or rough. I'm from Florida and even though I LOVE our courses I can say that drainage is an issue and it's highly appreciated when I travel out of state and play. So onto the negative. The pace of play was ROUGH. I had a 6:15 PM tee time, they had me behind a pair of 2 walking who was behind a foursome of females who were behind a foursome of females with two walking and two riding. I started at 5:45 PM and at 8:15 PM I was only at the 12th hole. The money I spent was a rip off. Too add to the chaos, there were two college age guys who were playing erratically, driving their golf cart all over the course hopping onto empty tee boxes, hitting shots that had no direction and then they continued to drive around the course like it was a Monster Jam rally. I play Golf often, and I've never seen such poor etiquette not only from the wild twosome but also people riding up in golf carts and joking a party in front of me. So the twosome walking in front of me became 2 walking + 1 riding. Absolute worst experience when it comes to game play ever. Honestly a refund of my money would have been great versus the wasted afternoon/twilight session that could have been enjoyable. Your course is gorgeous but that's about it. read more

Another one of my favorite muni courses to play around Chicago. Staff is consistently friendly and while there isn't a driving range, I'm a huge fan of the quality of the practice short game area and the putting green. The layout is fun and with the proximity to the lake (relative), the usual wind gusts can make the par 3 holes and the narrow fairway holes a challenge. You don't need to be super long off the tee but hitting the greens are key to score here. I believe a new F&B operator is managing the restaurant operations for 2024, but prior to that, SVGC had some of the best breakfast sandies in town. This course will continue to be on my rotation. PS: just rip the driver on the first hole - you know you want to. read more

Sunset Valley Golf Club should be the standardized model for a municipal golf course. A "muni" is a course that is owned a ran by the city which it is in, and sunset is ran to perfection. The course layout itself is awesome, it has some long holes and some short par fours that are reachable if you can bomb it off the tee. There are many birdies on this course making it fun, however there are lot of hard holes to make it challenging. As far as the conditions go, they're top notch, which is AMAZING for a muni. The greens roll around a 10-11 on stimp and the fairways are cut clean. The pro shop and dining at this course are great as well! Before my round i make sure to grab a breakfast burrito and after my round I always enjoy a beer and watch some golf on tv at the bar. This course is the greatest example of municipal golf and more courses should follow! read more

I was pleasantly surprised by the course after hearing the improvements weren't as advertised. I'm an 18 so not super picky but greens were fast and course was challenging and moved well. I do agree with the reviewers complaining about the standing water. It hadn't rained in a couple days so was surprised (after all the money spent) that the drainage problem seems the same as before. Also, I would say (other than starter Mark, who was super friendly) the staff was surly at best. The cashiers were uninterested in their customers... just give me your credit card. Lastly, it was 84 degrees the day I played and they didn't provide a drop of water on the course. I walked and about melted making my way to the clubhouse after both the front and back. NO WATER! I've never seen that on a course... and no beverage cart. Wow! Additionally, it was about 90 inside the bar/restaurant. I'm not sure if the AC was broken or they are pinching pennies. read more

Recently played a tournament here and the greens keeper did not cut holes correctly and we had short putts that kicked straight back out of the hole here; rough cut uneven and there is not collar around the green. I play in the area and wanted to try SV. if you are not familiar with the area, the course is shoehorned into the neighborhood. not a bad thing, just not much signage - maps finds it just fine. the clubhouse and parking is good + they have ev charging, nice. the course is challenging and well kept. a few observations, we had tons of rain in the last week and it was bone dry, so they have invested in significant drainage. the flip side to that is very hard fairways and rock hard greens. be prepared. each hole next to another so be prepared to share fairways in both directions. the crew was excellent and professional. price was fair. not a long course, but still fun. read more

The staff at Sunset Valley Golf Club is very courteous, accommodating, flexible, and made my experience very enjoyable start to finish. Everything was reasonably priced and the golf course itself was in terrific shape. I will definitely be coming back here! read more

Course is in great condition this year. Course is reasonably priced for non-residents ($62 with cart weekends). Course has some longer holes which play really long if the wind is blowing the right direction. I finally birdied the really tough 10th with 90 degree dog leg. Greens play on the faster side - not quite country club speeds but close. Over the last few years, it's been pretty easy to get on over the weekends. North Shore Amateur is played here. Go for the turkey BLT sandwich with fries when eating after a round. Just this year they added a person to clean your clubs after a round (weekends only). Nice touch. read more

One of the best public courses in the North Shore. It's on par (pun intended) with the Wilmette and Winnetka courses...except it's about $10 cheaper. A lot of their Par 3's include water and I find them really fun (particularly #4, #6, and #11). The extra 10 mins North really helps relieve some of the congestion that plagues the other public courses in the North Shore. It's well worth the extra couple minutes. read more

Seems like a number of golf course got hit pretty hard with the past winter seeing so much snow. Some of the greens had portions (no more than 10-15% of green) where there was dead grass. Fairways were in pretty good shape. Bunkers were in ok shape - some with sand pretty compacted and others better. Luckily I didn't experience too many of those! The only other knock I would have is that some greens were pretty small. All in all, for $34 (non-resident, walking) to play 18 on a Saturday it is not a bad deal, even with so many course in the north shore area. The course doesn't really stand out to me among a lot of the other course in the north shore area but definitely a good choice for getting out a nice weekend. Also - kudos to the course for having cans of Bells Oberon and Two Hearted Ale. read more

The course is in fine shape and the bar staff are friendly. The way that they treated our foursome of women was not. The ranger followed us from the first hole and told us to "stop socializing" after we took one shot on the second hole because there was a 4some of tournament men from earlier in the day who wanted to play additional holes behind us. We never held them up and according to their own golf carts were always playing on pace. We got rained out after 12 and they told us we would get rain checks for 6 holes (something we had never heard of) so one of our group said what do we come back and play 15 holes? The woman at the desk IMMEDIATELY said ok I'll give you each 9 holes. Great. When we went back to use them a week later she remembered having given them to us and said we would still have to pay for the 3 holes because "we finished twelve" and then when reminded that she said that she would give us 9 she said "so you're basically asking me for free golf today!" I said no, it just wasn't logical to give 6 AND she herself remembered giving us 9! She said many do now give prorated holes for rainchecks. I asked at the course I played Thursday and the manager told me they give 9 or 18 and said he would never nickel and dime customers by prorating holes. I told her I would have more sympathy for the course if the ranger hadn't treated us so rudely last time. She ended up telling me that the ranger hadn't said what we heard him say and disputed our interpretation that men would likely NOT have been treated like that. She may be right. Maybe everyone is treated that way. The nearby Glencoe course is more beautiful and friendly, I would recommend it! read more

Played there for first time in years. Course just opened after a major renovation. Can't say enough good things about what was done. Greens upgraded to current standards, very fast, very true. They also took out most of the trees. Makes for a much different looking course. Added bunkers and drainage. Great job by all involved in renovation. Definitely recommend this north shore beauty! read more

Excellent public golf course. Sunset Valley is well-maintained and the staff is extremely professional. One of my favorite places to play. Never overbooked, with a nice pace of play. The course itself is not overly challenging, but there is a nice variety here, especially on the back 9. Also, the river that runs through the course is used very well, giving some of the par 3s a little bit of an extra challenge. read more

One of the better golf courses on the North Shore - typically in decent shape at a good value. I like the layout, a good mix of open vs. narrow, short vs. long, right to left, left to right type of tee shots. It's not the longest course (you'll find yourself hitting a lot of irons and fairway metals off the tee), but has a couple terrific Par 3s on the back, as well as some great risk reward shots. Actually, the entire back 9 is just fun golf all around. I'm a fan and would play here any day. read more

Ok course not yet recovered from winter. Easy and short holes with very slow greens. A bit boring with flat and mostly straight holes. Not worth full rates in my opinion with plenty of courses around. Found good discounted rate on Golf Now making it worth the drive though. Hard to find. My gps took me to a residential area south of the course. Check the aerial of the area. read more
