    Cinnamon Roll French Toast
    Laura P.

We came here for Mother's Day! The looks nice and modern! It was so cold for me, but I always get cold in places. I did notice they had a patio. And it was busy, to say the least but not so bad. They seated right away though. And our server was Sydney, she was very nice and attentive! We ordered our food, I got the pancake breakfast it was so good! And my friend ordered meat lovers breakfast and she really enjoyed it!! We did get a cinnamon roll, and it was delicious!! I will say the only reason this place didn't get my full five stars because we ended up waiting a little over 30 minutes to from the time we order to get our food, but we understood with the chaos of it being so busy for Mother's Day. And that's where the cinnamon roll came in as complementary from them. Other than that, it's a great place and I will say I will come back.

We just moved down the street from Sunshine bar and decided to give it a try on a Sunday Morning. We requested a table for two upon arrival and were immediately seated and greeted by a friendly staff member. We ordered some coffee and fresh-squeezed orange juice (which was delicious) and looked over the menu. The menu itself isn't overwhelming and has a good range of entree options. We ordered the Huevos Rancheros, the eggs benedict, and cheesy grits, and they were delivered to us within 10 minutes. The service was fast, the restaurant was clean and bright, and the portions were generous. There is plenty of parking outside and lots of seating inside (outdoor patio, inside dining area, and brunch bar). We will definitely be coming back!

Sunshine Breakfast Bar is bright, airy, and new. They had cute St. Patrick's Day decorations and the hostess/waitresses had cute green earrings/necklaces/etc. I attempted to join the waitlist through Yelp multiple times, however, I was not able to. We came on a Sunday around 11:45AM. The direct parking lot was full so we had to park further by the Bagelfeld's. We were quoted a 15 minute wait which was accurate. The time between taking our order and receiving our food was ~45 minutes. It took so long that they offered a complimentary cinnamon roll with vanilla cream icing, which was nice. The table next to us had been seated approximately 5 minutes before us and they ate their entire meal by the time our food came out. Definitely my biggest qualm, and when our food came out, mine came out last several minutes later. The food was mostly fine. The veggie omelet could have used salt. The grits were BLAND. I was disappointed that the ham used in the eggs benedict were 2 thin slices of ham rather than standard, thick Canadian ham. The hollandaise was good. The complimentary cinnamon roll with the vanilla icing was the best. By the time we finished eating around 1PM, it was certainly emptier. Probably a better time to come and actually receive their food within a reasonable period of time.

5/9/26: three people, three cocktails, three meals. All of us agreed everything was divine and we will definitely return. Parking: fairly substantial lot, but during busy hours do not expect to get a parking spot at the front of the restaurant. Ambiance: bright & colorful inside, well planned design, lots of seating. Service: all the staff waved as everyone walked through the door, we were greeted with smiles, our server (Emily) was very enthusiastic & attentive. Cocktails: breakfast mule, hello sunshine, coconut mojito. Prices as expected, and it was all consumed with a smile. Very tasty, each one. Food: Sunshine pancake breakfast, almond croissant French toast, classic benedict. Pancakes were fluffy, the French toast was light & airy, the benedict was devoured. Absolutely scrump-dili-icious.

The vibes inside were a lot of fun. Open and airy without feeling too loud. The service was great, everyone we encountered seemed happy to be there. The food was delicious!! The blueberry danish pancakes were amazing and I can't wait to go back and try the blueberry bacon pancakes. The only thing I didn't care for was the coffee. It tasted a little bitter and burnt, next time I'll try something different to drink.

Bright, welcoming, and already feeling like it belongs in Tempe's regular breakfast rotation. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere stood out -- high ceilings, warm hanging lights, and seasonal décor that made the space feel lively without being overwhelming. The dining room felt clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully arranged, creating a relaxed sit-down experience that works just as well for a quick breakfast as it does for a slow weekend meal. Service made the experience. Our waitress, Emily, was outstanding -- attentive without hovering, friendly, and clearly focused on getting the details right. Drinks stayed filled, food timing was smooth, and she made the whole visit feel genuinely cared for rather than transactional. The food delivered across the board. The classic breakfast plate hit every comfort note: well-cooked eggs, solid sausage, and biscuits covered in rich, peppery gravy. The eggs Benedict came out properly structured with silky hollandaise and crisped breakfast potatoes on the side. But the standout was the pancakes. Super fluffy with an exquisite cream-cheese topping that honestly didn't even need syrup. Light, soft, and balanced -- the kind of pancakes you immediately regret not ordering the full stack of. That mistake will definitely be corrected next visit. Overall: friendly service, beautiful ambiance, strong execution on classic breakfast favorites, and memorable specialty pancakes. If consistency holds, this place has everything needed to become a true Tempe staple.

We were so happy to have discovered Sunshine Breakfast Bar this weekend--it's an absolute joint! We had an incredible experience thanks to our server, Xena, who was genuinely exceptional and made the whole visit fantastic. Ask for her! The food was generally outstanding. I ordered the All American Breakfast, which came with creamy cheese grits and meaty thick bacon. My wife was raving about her Toasted Coconut French Toast, which was fluffy and perfectly sweet. I did have a minor issue with my eggs when they first came out, but the team quickly and pleasantly addressed it without any fuss. It was fixed immediately, which is all you can ask for! My only complaint, and this is entirely a matter of personal taste, was the coffee. It just wasn't bold enough for me. I tend to like my coffee super dark, like my sole, so if you're a dark roast fanatic, you might find it a little light. Despite the coffee not being to my super-dark preference, and the small egg fix, this place earned a solid four stars because the food quality, ambiance, and especially the service from Xena and the responsive kitchen team were top-notch. We will absolutely be back and look forward to a time when the dog friendly patio is open.

    Biscuits and Gravy

I've visited Sunshine Breakfast Bar on Cave Creek Rd multiple times. I live in Mesa, so it's a bit of a drive, but I would absolutely travel for their biscuits and gravy. Now that there's a Tempe location, I had to check it out. I came in Saturday at 8am to the Sunshine Breakfast Bar location. The service was great. I truly believe everyone was doing their best. Our food came out in a timely manner with no long wait. I ordered the biscuits and gravy, and my husband had the chicken fried steak. Unfortunately, the gravy wasn't quite the same as the Cave Creek location. The consistency seemed a bit "broken" you could see small cracks in it. As it cooled, it started to look almost like frosting sitting on top of the biscuit, and it tasted like it may have had a bit too much flour. It wasn't horrible, just definitely different. I understand that can happen; same recipe, different cook. I did like that they offer the option of thick or thin bacon. The potatoes that came with the chicken fried steak were flavorful and well-seasoned. The ambiance was good different TVs and music but calm to where you can easily hold a conversation. I would give this location another chance, but if I'm really craving those biscuits and gravy, I'd probably still make the drive to Cave Creek.

Meh food. Poor service. Asked to leave after 1 3/4 hour. Won't go back again. Very rude.

Food and service need great improvement. My party was asked to leave after being there 1 3/4 hour so others could be seated. There was no one waiting to be seated. Avocado toast had to be sent back because avocado tasted bad. Waitress never refilled coffee. We will never go back.

    Chilaquiles with Chorizo

We had to wait 10-15 mins when we walked in on a Saturday morning, around 10:30am, which passed pretty quickly. It was adorable inside because they decorated for Valentine's Day, and some staff were wearing pink and dressed all festive :) When we sat down we were greeted by a real friendly server. Me and the two others had just ran a 5k that morning so we were pretty hungry -- I ordered a Chilaquiles with Chorizo (it was soo filling. I finished most of it but it was a lot, which was a good thing since I was hungry), an Omelette, and a Breakfast Burrito (it had ham in it which surprised me a bit, I feel like it's usually a different protein like sausage, bacon, or chorizo). The table already has Tabasco and Cholula, in case you're a spicy sauce fan like me. My friend thought his potatoes on his Omelette plate could have been seasoned more, but he just opted to season it with some salt that was on the table. His sourdough toast wasn't toasted much either, it felt a bit flimsy. Besides that, we were pretty full from the meal. Other things to note: overall service was great, they had some sports games playing on their TVs, the bathroom was a teeny bit cramped for how many people were there that morning, parking was easy, and this place is conveniently located so you can always explore the area. (I personally wasn't too interested in their drink menu, so I decided to go elsewhere for a morning coffee, but the other 2 I was with got their drip coffee, which tasted pretty normal of course). Overall this was a pretty good experience, wasn't crazy about it but I could be curious to come back!

    Kids chocolate chip pancakes

I am a fantastic cook, which is a great quality, except when I want to eat out. There simply are not many places where the food comes close to what I can do at home. This has been especially true with chilaquiles and huevos rancheros. In fact, not once has a restaurant been able to make them in a way where the chips stay crunchy and the flavors truly pop... until now. I decided to go with the huevos rancheros. Normally I avoid ordering dishes like this because they rarely live up to expectations, but the photos had me curious. When I eat out, I do so for the experience and to expand my own cooking, so I welcome something new. This dish delivered on every level. The flavors were paired perfectly and built on one another. I could taste each ingredient individually as the bite unfolded. It was an explosion of flavor. The salt and softness of the breakfast potatoes and beans balanced beautifully with the mild flavor and crunch of the chips--yes, actual crunch. The avocado and cream sauce were not just there for color, but added their own distinct dimension. I chose the red sauce, and paired with the chorizo, it provided the perfect level of spice without overwhelming the dish. What made the dish even more special was the pico de gallo. It was added with restraint, just lightly enough that it did not dominate every bite. Instead, every so often, you would encounter it unexpectedly, delivering a bright zing of freshness that elevated that particular bite. It kept the experience dynamic and intentional, ensuring that each bite was slightly different from the last rather than blending into a single uniform flavor. That level of thoughtfulness is rare. And the eggs. Most restaurants cannot even get scrambled eggs right, often overcooking them until they are brown and dry. Not here. They were perfect. My son ordered the pancakes. They were not my personal favorite, but that was simply because they use sweet cream instead of regular cream, and I am sensitive to sweeter flavors. That said, they were clearly well made. The patron next to me had what looked like a blueberry streusel pancake, and it looked absolutely incredible. This is the kind of place you hope to find but rarely do. It delivered not just a meal, but an experience. It is someplace I know I will miss when I return home in a few days.

Excellent! Food was fantastic, service was great and ambiance was inviting, fun and very upscale modern design. I am so happy to find this place. I found our new breakfast spot! And have to try their lunch menu next. Maybe I'll just move in because I liked it that much.

The service, the food, the atmosphere, the whole experience was so great. We tried the toasted coconut french toast. I don't care for coconut but I genuinely would have licked the plate clean. The balance on this dish with sweetness and creaminess and crunch was delightful. I got the chicken fried steak with potatoes and my husband got the brisket benedict with grits. He is from the south and said these grits were made incredibly well and he really liked the whipped butter. The benedict was flavorful and rich and the brisket cooked to perfection. We definitely added this into our favorites list and a spot we will return to.

My first visit to Harlow's was back in 1993--when Tempe still felt like a college town with rough edges and a pulse--this place went by another name: Mae West. The name change? That's a story best told over coffee and eggs, which is exactly how all good stories should be told. What never changed was the vibe: a room that quietly collected stories. You see it on the walls--old Hollywood glamour nodding to Mae West the actress, winking at you from another era, reminding you that Tempe once flirted with style and danger before developers discovered spreadsheets. And then there's the music. In the '90s and early 2000s, when the Tempe music scene was punching way above its weight, this place was part diner, part unofficial green room. Bands didn't just eat here--they held court. You'd find members of Gin Blossoms, The Refreshments, and a rotating cast of local music heroes sliding into booths, fueling up. No velvet ropes. No backstage passes. Just eggs, coffee, and the quiet understanding that everyone in the room was part of the same scene. You still feel it. The memorabilia isn't curated--it's accumulated. Earned. Like scars on a boxer. And through all of it--name changes, real estate pressure, ASU's corporate gravity well--Harlow's endured. We talked with the owners, John and Kimberly, about how Tempe's mom-and-pop joints have been steadily squeezed out by institutional money and chain logic. Harlow's survived not by scaling, but by belonging. Locals. Students. Musicians. Families. Same door, same welcome. You come here for chorizo and eggs that understand their purpose in life. For Belgian waffles that don't need reinvention. For breakfast that refuses to be ironic. But you stay because places like this are rare now--rooms where culture happened accidentally, not because someone branded it that way. Harlow's Cafe isn't just a great breakfast spot. It's a time capsule that still feeds you. A small, stubborn act of resistance. And proof that if you do the simple things right--and treat people like they matter--you just might outlast the wrecking ball.
