We wanted a garden that had splashes of color and learned that bromeliads are colorful year-round, without having to flower. They need no fertilizer, trimming, or frequent watering. These were the plants for us! We went to Sunshine Bromeliads because they offer a broad choice of plants from which to purchase. They have rows and rows of plants for $10 each - a better price than more commonly known nurseries! (They also have plants for $5 and $25 based on size and type.) The outdoor nursery has a huge area under a tarp for bromeliads that thrive in partial sun and another big area in the open for bromeliads that love full sun. Visitors can get design ideas from the garden area that has a bromeliad-lined koi pond, tree trunks festooned with bromeliad rings, clumping bromeliads used as ground cover, and bromeliads growing on fences, tree limbs, and in shallow rocks! The only thing more stunning than the hot pink, speckled purple, and striped leaves of the plants - or the multi-colored flowers from the bromeliad centers - is the customer service. This family-owned business is obviously a labor of love. We became fast friends with the owner and her family from the first time we visited (we've been back three times). During our visits they identified plants that would thrive in our yard. They always pack each plant for ease of travel. A few weeks ago the owner's daughter even gave me a tomato and pepper from her personal garden. And yesterday the owner gave hubby a birthday gift of a beautiful bromeliad in bloom! They speak English and Spanish and are open from 8 to 4 during the week and 10 to 3 on Saturdays. This is the place to go for Bromeliads. The quality is superb and the selection is incredible. I never saw such variety's. The plants are also very durable and will split off babies. Unlike big box bought plants these become part of your garden for years. read more

If there is a better nursery in South Florida -- or ALL of Florida, for that matter -- then please correct me! Having been abroad for the past two years, I returned to my all-time favorite nursery to see that, lo-n-behold, it's actually IMPROVED since my last visit!!! OMG, this nursery is something to behold in-person! Any photograph simply won't do justice to Sunshine Bromeliads! These folks are top-notched in variety, quality, prices, and customer service. Sunshine has got to rank in the top-5 businesses I've ever been to as far as customer service goes -- and I'm leaving PLENTY of room for leeway here because I'm doing my best as I type this review to think of a place that has better customer service, and I can't think of any...! The nursery has expanded quite a bit since my last visit a few years ago, with an even larger plot of land that is being groomed for expansion. The layout is spectacular, to say the least! The vibrancy of vivid floral hues are astonishing! If there is absolutely any drawback that I can (reasonably) think of it's its location way out west in Southwest Ranches (at the very end of Old Sheridan Street). That said, from where I live in North Oakland Park to Sunshine took me a little over 30 minutes -- it was well-worth the time and mileage! (Fortunately, I have an electric car, so gas is zip. I was just a bit nervous I wouldn't be able to make it; alas, I had plenty of juice left upon my return, which means more trips...!) This family-owned/run business, specializing in a wide-range of bromeliad species has been around for decades, with the matriarch of the family starting with something like a half-dozen plants, that's grown to hundreds, if not thousands! Once I discovered sunshine bromeliads I stopped going to any other nurseries. The customer service is A+ the owner will walk around with you and explain each variety of bromeliad and help you pick out the best one for your situation. The only downside is that they have so many different varieties and it's hard to choose. Which is a great problem to have. read more

This is an outstanding nursery. We drove down from furthermost northeast Fort Lauderdale. We will be coming again to view and purchase more of their exquisite bromeliads. It is difficult to choose which to buy, as the variety is so great and their perfection and coloration is so varied and wonderful. We have never seen such a magnificent array of bromeliads before. They are so well presented, with names, growing conditions, and prices all specified to help you follow your heart and choose what pleases you most and what will work well under your garden's lighting conditions. You will not find the kind of high quality, unusual types that they sell at either big box stores or the average nursery. Just seeing their merchandise is a visual treat, as well as a wonderment of nature.....and a tribute to a hard working family business that is committed to excellence and nurturing healthy, beautiful plants. And their pricing is outstanding,.........really, really reasonable. The plants are huge - the ones we got range from 20 to 25 inches in diameter, and only cost $10 each. If you could find comparable plants in a retail setting, I imagine you might only get them at a high end florist, costing a minimum of $35, or substantially more, per plant. (Such beautiful plants make wonderful gifts! ) The people who run this nursery are upbeat and helpful and welcoming! A real pleasure to deal with, and so wonderful that they package up your plants in large brown paper sleeves that protect them in transit for the long ride back home.
