Waiting for a clothes dryer to be repaired or replaced when moving in took two months, later a broken washer took over a month. A nonfunctioning shower in guest room was not corrected while I had company for a week and still not fixed when I left! They had changes in management twice and neither was efficient or caring. The apartments were lovely and spacious but housekeeping was non existent the first 18 months and then poor until I left. The residents were very nice and friendly but poorly screened for IL, assisted living or memory care. I cannot comment on anything other than IL where I lived.

Initially it was difficult for her to adjust and I think the Pines could do more to make the rooms a little more appealing for people that don't have any family to set up the rooms for them. Beyond that however, I thought the quality of care was good, and my friend settled in and noted how nice people were to her. She really appreciated that they did her hair and nails, and treated her with respect. Many facilities nowadays can be understaffed and staff over worked but I found everyone to be friendly. I was particularly impressed with the physical and occupational therapy folks who did an excellent job. The facility was always clean.

Based upon my experiences with a few other assisted living facilities where my mom lived, DeSoto Palms is great! For the temporary status we needed. I was pleased. My mother was transferred here and the arrival was a disaster. She was found wandering the parking lot and asking for my father (who has been dead for 31 years). Then once they got her into the unit, I was told by the nurse that she was very uncooperative about taking her meds. Why they couldn't slip it into her food or drink is beyond me. Then when I called to see how she was, both times I was connected to Deborah. She had the most miserable tone in her voice and complained about my mom packing and unpacking. I did research on this and it's very typical for Alzheimer's patients to do that when in a new place. She also said that she refused to take her meds. Why is this even an issue for someone who is supposed to be trained to take care of people with dementia? Then we were told after she had been there for only 5 days, she was going to be kicked out. We asked for help from the staff there to find her a more suitable facility. It typically takes about a month for people to get adjusted. They gave her 5 days! The director, Michelle Orlando, told us she "exhausted the search for every place in the area." My husband called 2 places the same day and we were told there was plenty of room at both. The icing on the cake was when Michelle told me "Your mother has been absolutely vile to everyone here since she arrived." This was already an emotionally draining time for me and to be told those exact words about my ailing mother told me all I needed to know. She was moved to another facility and is doing great. This is because the new facility has properly trained staff - not miserable nurses who complain about my mom and a director who couldn't even be bothered to call another facility for me. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! It's truly all top show. They entice you by showing you their facility and claiming to have properly trained staff. This is false! Good luck if your loved one comes here and experiences the anger that most dementia patients will go through. Their staff aren't trained to handle those patients. On a side note, they charged us $4400 which was fraudulent. Mom wasn't even there a month, yet they wanted to try to get over half her monthly rent on top of the $10,000 I paid them. They are truly fraudulent in their practices and what they promise people. All this while we are in an extremely vulnerable position. If this keeps one person from making the same mistake we did, I'll be happy. BTW, for those looking for memory care facility, please make sure the staff is licensed to administer alternative delivery systems such as a topical gel for benzodiazepines. This has been the saving grace at her new facility.

The staff adhere to medications and physician directives, while personalizing the approach for each guest. Our uncle, would only take his medicine with a sweet snack. They always had one to give him to ensure his medicine was pleasantly taken.The facility is spotless and the meals are consistently home cooked and plentiful for each guest. What really distinguishes this facility from any other Sarasota site is the bilingual diversity of English and Spanish that offers their guests a greater level of service and cultural sensitivity. Our uncle spoke only Spanish, even though he understood English, Belen and her staff were always inclusive with our uncle to ensure he felt like part of the family. This is clearly the patients' home and you feel you are a welcome visitor visiting your family. A for profit business TFOH does not, will not live up to their promises. Your family member may not get the medicines they need each day, or the foods they need. Apts are not cleaned w regularity, the entire facility shows a very poorly cleaned environment, from pee-stained floors in the common bathrooms to carpet and upholstery soiling. All personal items--jewelry, clothing, food, art, are up for grabs. Take ur eye off them and they're gone. Theft of personal items is widespread. Food is terrible, staff is very poorly trained. Avoid this place ; it's among the worst of a bad lot.
