we've lived in the bay area 40 years. we bought a new construction home in 1999 and lived in it 26 years. pg&e utility rates significantly increased annually. we knew pg&e would accelerate billing rate increases. we planned buying a new home for 2 years. a key component was leveraging the power of powerwall + solar to achieve energy self sufficiency. we spent several years reviewing technology including trips to nevada to review homes completely energy self sufficient. after 18 months searching we found a near perfect new construction home in emerald hills. it had: very efficient electric hvac (carrier/bryant central minisplit) and rheem heat pump water heaters, large roof area amenable to solar panels, unobstructed sun exposure, and the minimum 10 solar panels for new construction. we bought the home in nov 25 and were up against the 31 dec 25 to receive the federal solar tax credit. i had proactively contacted about 10 local solar companies. they all were unresponsive, including tesla, and demanded at least 2-3 actual pg&e bills. i knew from the nevada builders it was possible to calculate the approximate powerwall+solar requirements based on the hvac, water heater, and other significant electricity consumers in the house plus the house size and integrity. sameer at sunvault was the only vendor with the capability and willingness to help plan the system based on the house components and characteristics. he started sunvault because of a similar frustration with solar providers. sameer was incredibly responsive and worked with us to quickly design and buy the system. i'm a veteran of 30 years of bay area data startups. my wife is a former software engineer. working with smart capable people is the key. sameer is a former facebook executive. his knowledge of solar systems (batteries and solar) is unparalleled. he brings the silicon valley mindset of working fast and effective. we decided on 36 460 watt rec alpha series panels and 3 powerwall 3 batteries (1 is an expansion pack). sameer's team installed the system in late december. we replaced the original 10 solar panels installed to meet ca new construction requirements. they worked with us to adjust components to match the house aesthetics. the rec black panels blend in well with the roof and the powerwalls fit perfectly on the garage exterior wall. sameer personally spent a lot of time on site and handled all the inspections (woodside fire and san mateo). the woodside fire inspector inspects solar systems fulltime. he noted the quality of sunvault's installation was impeccable, one of the best he's encountered. he indicated many systems fail first inspection. the system went live about a week ago. it performed perfectly. pg&e showed we were using 45 kwh/day. we're generating 60 kwh day during the winter. we have significant electricity surplus which we planned so we can charge ev's and more liberally run heat and ac. for the first time in my life we're running heat at 70 degree for the entire 4400 sq ft home with plenty of surplus electricity. we look forward to aggressive ac use this summer. over 2 years we met with dozens of builders and solar/battery installers. sameer is head and shoulders superior to all of these in system knowledge, customer orientation, can do spirit, and is just wicked smart. it was nirvana working with another fellow kindred spirit truly manifesting the silicon valley credo. sunvault is by far the best solar+battery system company in the bay area. read more

We had a great experience working with Sunvault for our solar installation, and would highly recommend Sameer and his team to anyone. If you're thinking about going solar, you need to move _fast_. That's because how net-metering works is about to change significantly -- and unfavorably -- very soon in California. When you have solar, you overproduce electricity during the day when the sun is shining, and send energy into the grid in exchange for credit. Then, when you need more energy than you can produce -- at night, on rainy days, etc. -- you draw energy from the grid, using up your credit. The current rules -- "NEM 2.0" -- say that the energy you export to the grid is worth as much as the energy you import, which means you essentially use the grid as your giant battery -- you store energy there when you have extra, and draw energy when you need it, for basically no cost! Under these rules, there's really no reason to own additional batteries yourself, unless you really care about energy independence. These rules are very (too?) favorable for solar owners. But the rules are about to change. Under "NEM 3.0", the credit for energy you export will be worth much lower than the energy you import, so it will be much harder for your exports to cover your imports without also having your own battery. The new rules will also impose significant fixed cost just for _owning_ a solar system, regardless of whether you are a net exporter or importer. This makes residential solar much less desirable, and pushes the payback period from 5-6 years to 12-15 years. I do think NEM 2.0 is too favorable for solar owners, but NEM 3.0 will pretty much kill any incentives to go solar. The good news is that if you are already on NEM 2.0, then you will be grandfathered for 15-20 years, even after NEM 3.0 goes into effect. The bad news is, while no one is sure when NEM 3.0 will go into effect or what its final form will take, it is expected to happen some time in early 2023. So, the race is on and the clock is ticking! If you want solar, you need to get it installed and operational before NEM 3.0 goes into effect, so you can be grandfathered in with NEM 2.0! I looked into many options when choosing installers. The national players like Tesla Solar tend to have the lowest quotes by far. But they also have very bad customer service (just read the reviews and horror stories), and they're often booked many months out. When I inquired in July, they said they wouldn't be able to get to mine till the end of the year, and that's if things went perfectly smoothly. That's cutting it too close to me; I wanted to be operational ASAP. I got several quotes from local installers, and decided to go with Sameer and SunVault. His quote was very competitive, and he was very knowledgeable and responsive when we talked through my concerns and needs. He's also the owner -- not a salesperson -- so you're dealing with someone who will oversee the entire operation, including showing up at installation and inspection. This gave me more confidence that I wouldn't be left hanging or chasing down the right person. But the best part is -- Sameer's team moved _fast_. My timeline was: 7/27 - contract signed 8/2 - engineering plans designed 8/17 - permit approved (Fremont takes a while!) 8/22 - installation 8/26 - Inspection (passed easily) 9/2 - permission to operate received So, from contract signed to operational only took less than six weeks! This is basically as fast as possible, with most of the time spent waiting for city permitting and inspection. I was amazed! On installation day, the crew was also great. They took good care of my roof and did things the right way. The electrician also took pains to run the conduit as efficiently as possible, even though it took him a lot more time and effort to do so. The outcome looked great and worked great! In the bay area, with ample sunshine and rising electricity rates, it pretty much always makes sense to go solar... if you can get in before NEM 3.0 starts! We got quotes from 10+ vendors in the Bay Area, and I am very glad we decided to go with Sameer and his team at Sunvault. I dealt directly with Sameer (the owner) throughout the project. I was exchanging emails with him over the weekend and late into the night while iterating on the panel layout. Once we settled on the layout, he had the final plans sent for permitting in just a couple of days. SunVault installed a complete solar+battery backup system for my house. They did a very solid job, and the pricing was competitive. The project was done in only 6 weeks including permits. I got quotes from multiple installers, and working with Sameer was so much better compared to large installers. First, you work with an engineer not a salesperson. He can go into details, explain, educate. I had a lot of questions, and Sameer was always patient and responsive. Second, Sameer worked with me to find the best configuration for my needs, and was much more flexible compared to some large vendors with only few fixed configurations. After getting my first summer electricity bill this month in July, I was like screw this and shopped around for a solar installer. I started with Tesla and shopped around locally. My findings were that Tesla is cheapest per kw, but the support horror stories are prevalent. Local installers seemed to provide better service at a much higher cost (30-50% more than Tesla). I'm greedy, so why can't I have both? I was so glad that I looked internally and found SunVault. SunVault provided a super competitive quote (only 5% more than Tesla!!). The hardware they offered seemed better (hanwha q cell 400w panels, i8+ microinverters) compared to what Tesla offers. However, the service was quick and amazing. E2E install from design to install to inspection to PTO was completely handled by Sameer and team. The only thing you needed to do was to pay. Timeline: 6/30 - signed contract after discussing with SunVault on system needs 8/2 - system installed (could've been earlier, but there was a conflict) 8/15 - PTO approved, system up and running and generating a lot of electricity Within 6 weeks, I have my solar system fully up and running. I started to be interested in going solar one year ago, did quite some research around solar panels, inverters and racks etc. But I got pulled to other stuff and never actually started the project. The recent news about NEM 3.0 pulled the trigger, so I started to shop around for an installer. I used energysage and also yelp to get quotes from different companies, big and small, finally got around 8 quotes. I told the companies about the specific panels and inverters I want, so the quotes were all based on the same product. SunVault's price was not the best though it was close to the best price on a per watt basis, I decided to choose them for the following reasons: 1. They are offering the best racking system by default; 2. Their design is clean and the layout of the panels is what I like most among all the companies I talked to. 3. Their CEO Sammer is very easy to communicate with, he designs the system by himself and he knows a lot of things related to solar and beyond. During the onsite visit, he was the only person who was willing to open up the main panel and did the math right which came to the conclusion that I don't need to upgrade my main panel. SunVault is a small company but the good part is they move fast and also have their own dedicated installation team. The team is also very nice, professional and hard working. Later I found that Sameer is the kind of person really cares about quality and pays a lot of attention to the details. He came to the working site every day and inspected everything with a high bar, even for minor issues like the wire under the panel was a little bit longer, he asked his team to come back the other day to fix that. Responsiveness: I was late to request Sameer and his team to install the solar system before the NEM2 April deadline. Sameer, accommodated my requested and ensured that all the formalities were completed accurately. He kept in the loop on the progress and was very upfront and transparent about the whole process. 2. Quality of service: Its been a few months since the installation. Everything works as expected. But every now and then, I have some questions for Sameer(more for my education) asking if the system is generating as expected, how would things fluctuate based on weather etc. Sameer is very responsive. Also on one instance, my contractor accidentally turned off a circuit connected to the Enphase Invertor and my generation had halted. I contacted Sameer and he instantly jumped on to resolve the issue. Most companies would have easily said "I don't know ask your contractor". 3. Princing: Sunvaults pricing is fair and competitive. I had a complex project of a roof which had existing solar and some roof work also needed. Sameer and his team helped with providing me a complete work estimate along with roof repair that was needed. His solar panels were of much better quality and higher power than what I had earlier. They were able to install the panels and all the equipment based on how I asked them to with them all on one side of the house and the wiring and conduits to the way that looked more aesthetic to me. Their team made sure everything was done per Fremont's permit standards which were very strict and had to go through multiple approvals which they took care of with the city along with structural analysis which was a bit abnormal. Timeline wise, It is a high bar to hit, but it only accounts for a small portion of the wonderful experience I'd like to share here. I must say dealing with Sunvault solar (Sameer and his team) was a delight. They under promised and constantly over delivered - the thing that stood out to me the most was the speed of execution (without dropping the quality of work). Throughout the installation I felt team was never off track, kept me in the information loop. They found couple places on my roof where wood was rotten, instead of hurrying the problem they fixed the issue. My solar install wasn't straightforward and had an idea going into it, tile roof without the plywood at the bottom (typical in the houses built in 80s). Additionally I had no additional slots left on my electrical panel. Sameer and his team removed the tiles, added plywood waterproofing underlayment and put the tiles back. Roof work was done really well, crew was on auto-pilot. They exactly knew what needs to be done. I had older PVC pipes going to thermal solar (for heating swimming pool) and team handled them with care. Next week was the solar install and electrical work. Team has recommended 7.0 kW system (20 panels) with a sub-panel. They finished the work on-time, took care of every little details. I have heard Fremont city is tougher (bit notorious -- good for homeowners :)) to get certifications. I felt Sameer was very confident in getting the certification. He knew about all the details city looks for, I can say they took care of every detail ahead of time (painting conduit, putting the placards, finding the copper grounding). I hired Sunvault to install a panels-only solar system. Most of my interactions were primarily with Sameer (the owner). He was very responsive to my questions and for any clarifications I needed. There wasn't a need for an in-person consultation to come up with the initial panel deployment layout and plan. 99% of the communications with Sameer was via WhatsApp, iMessage or email thro' out the entire project. Once the city permit was issued, the work from installation to live-operation took about 3-4 days. We opted to have the PV system on our home installed by Sunvault Solar after interviewing several installers ranging from the big names in the business (Sunpower, Tesla, Sunrun) to several highly-rated local companies found via Yelp and EnergySage as well as other online options (Project Solar, DroneQuote). While Sunvault's was not the cheapest quote that we received, it offered the best combination of technology (top tier panels and microinverters) as well as a customized design solution for our situation and a one-stop shop for associated upgrades (we needed a sub-panel upgrade to accommodate our solar PV system). Our's was a particularly challenging install given that we have a two-story house with a steep-pitched, light-weight concrete tile roof, but the guys did a great job installing our panels with minimal damage to the tiles (all broken tiles were replaced including those that were broken prior to the installation and at no cost to us). First of all if there is a 10 star rating I would have given that for SunVault. Sameer and his team did an amazing job for my solar. The pricing what they gave is the best out of 10 different companies including the big ones like Sunpower , Solar Optimum etc. no one in the Bay Area has what he gives. The whole process was so smooth starting from City Permit to final approval. Everything was done in 30 days of time. They took care of Main electric panel upgrade and solar was installed in 3 weeks of my agreement signed. Sameer is very responsive , always in communication with all the steps. Helped me to understand the whole process and the federal credit aspect. Gave the right idea to finance with no payment and no interest where I can pay off in 18 months time. Everyone else out there telling to get monthly payment from day 1 but Sameer nailed it why we should not. Today my final city inspection got approved. I would say Sameer and SunVault to grow big and become the best Solar Company in Bay Area. The team at SanVault was exceptional throughout the Solar installation process at our new home. They helped us understand how Solarizing our home will help us save $$$$ in the longer run. What I also liked was that they explained to us what costs of our current utility bill will stay constant and how based on the design we settled on we will have paid off for all the usage based on current utility trends in 6ish years after which we'd be pretty much getting free energy for our house until the life end of the system. That is the metric we went with while deciding on the High Initial Cost of having this done on our property. Comparing with other Solar companies on the market I found working with SunVault pretty cost effective as well as the interactions were much more at a personal level which made us feel comfortable. I don't usually write reviews but in this case, given how much I relied on Yelp when doing my own research, I had to share our experience. Short Story: From the first conversation to the final connection to PG&E our experience with Sameer and his team was phenomenal! Long story: We researched and spoke to several companies and in the end chose Sunvault Solar because of the quality of the products they use, the reasonable cost and the concierge style of service they offer. Sameer is extremely knowledgeable about Solar and spent a lot of time in our first conversation listening to our goals for having Solar on our house. He was not at all pushy and based on our goals made a number of suggestions that allowed us to continue our research. After we decided on Sunvault, the project kicked off quite quickly and efficiently, and our project wasn't a straight forward one either; we had an existing Solar system from 2007 that wasn't functioning well (old low capacity panels and a dying inverter). In the end, we chose to have the old panels removed and new panels added to both sides of our roof. Sameer and his team took care of removing the old panels and when they saw that our contractors hadn't put tiles under our old panels, they took care of ordering and installing the new tiles before proceeding with the new solar installation - what could have been a stressful delay turned out to be quite seamless. After that the new panels were installed and hooked up and Sameer showed us how to use the Enphase app to monitor the performance of the system and each of our Q-Cell panels. As we admired how much energy we generate during the day, Sameer took care of organizing inspections with the city and the fire district (easy and passed quickly) and all the final paperwork to get us hooked back up to PG&E. We are now making more energy than we use, selling it back to the grid and have room to grow over the next 25 years that our system is warrantied for. We asked ourselves before starting this journey if replacing our old panels would be worth it and now that we're one month in, the answer is an easy one - ABSOLUTELY!!
