When you become older and your feet, ankles and knees start failing you in ways that were unimaginable back when you were a spry 20-something, you start to appreciate the value of a comfortable and supportive shoe. Because what that means is that shoe has the super power of allowing you to still run or walk miles on end as you still might want to do. Before getting into details, a big thank you to Juan at the Super Runner shop on Amsterdam Ave for his expertise in fitting my wife with a comfortable pair of running shoes. His expertise in fitting running shoes allowed us to walk miles each day for the last three days while visiting NYC. I have a lot of mixed feelings about my experience here this morning. The staff member was very nice and the fitting software is very thorough. However, the store did let a group of customers bring in their pet (non-service) dog who proceeded to make contact with the shoes that that their owners were trying on. The store was already crowded and poorly laid out as it was and I certainly didn't want to bring home shoes that an unknown pet may have made contact with. read more

I visited this place just once and also went to Fleet Feet (Jackrabbit) in the UWS to look for new running shoes. I found Fleet Feet to be so much more helpful. Maybe it was because I arrived 30 minutes before closing time, but the foot scan wasn't done as thoroughly as how it was done at Fleet Feet, and the worker seemed impatient and like he just wanted to sell me shoes and insoles without considering my preferences or needs. He seemed to be annoyed when I asked any questions and didn't elaborate on any answers. Maybe I just went during an off time, but I definitely will be going to Fleet Feet next time I'm looking for running shoes. read more

While there was a good selection of shoes, the service was bad. My salesperson waited on more than one person at a time and started waiting on me before she had cleaned up all the shoes from the last customer, so she was horribly distracted. I had to tell her my preferences several times, and it seemed like she was not paying attention. For example, I said that there was only two colors I was interested in (blue or black), but she repeatedly brought me shoes in a much different color (including white, fluorescent, and a bunch of colors that had nothing to do with my request). read more

This place is the SPOT!!! I've gotten five pairs of running sneaks from here over the years and I have never once had less than a fantastic experience. They introduced me, convinced me to try them really, to Brooks sneakers. I've been an ASICS customer forever and now I'm alternating between Brooks Ghost and ASICS Gel Kayano--they advised rotating sneakers to elongate their lifespan and I can tell it's working after three months; both pairs are in tip top shape!!! They also take old shoes and donate them to local homeless shelters... so when your sneaks are completely beat, drop them here and pick up a new pair! I went in recently to get winter running leggings and they were out of stock of the women's version. The guy helping me said I could take a picture of the tag and I said no thank you, I don't want to order online; I want to shop in store. Then asked if they could call me when they're back in stock and the guy was so happy and thanked me. SHOP LOCAL AND SMALL!! Ordered APL's on-line from SRS. The picture they presented looked nothing like the APL's I received so I asked for a return from customer care on June 10th. Observed their return policy, printed their label as required and sent back on June 15th. After several emails inquiring where my credit is to date I've heard NOTHING back and its July 5th. Thank God I used AMEX as I filed a claim against them and at least have had my charge suspended while they investigate. The very kind and patient staff at *Super Runners* took time to do a 3-D scan of my foot and used that information to make suggestions for the very specific kind of running shoes that would suit my needs! What is even more- I wore the shoes I bought from them for about two weeks before realizing they caused my pain; *Super Runners* took the shoes back FOR FULL STORE CREDIT! This was a solution I was not expecting AT ALL when I brought the shoes I had previously bought from them back to the store. I was beyond floored that they were willing to give me a complete refund even though I had worn them, had no receipt, and no box. My sister had me go here a few years ago to be fitted with the proper shoes as a birthday gift originally. Loved my experience then and even loved my last one even more. I randomly walked in and had the pleasure of working with Anthony, who clearly knew what he was talking about. After stepping on the insane technology pad, he was instantly able to see that I had flat feet, and I learned after 44 years that I have 2 different sized feet, a size apart! He asked the right questions on my brand preference and fave me the options that would help reduce the stress on my knees. He even helped me outfit my shoes with a proper insole, which mind you never worked for me, and oh my, what a difference! I feel like I am walking on air with these new shoes. Reduced the pain for my knees, and even took on a trip to the Azores islands hiking and they helped me home further then I could have imagined! I was so impressed that I have not only recommend other friends that spend all day on their feet, I also gave away his card and info. Ron was super helpful when I came in, after a run, looking for new running shoes. He watched my walk and determined that my arches were pretty normal. I told him my feet tend to be wide, and he rushed to the back room. Now, I believe he was rushing because he not only is an expert but also that it was a crowded day. He relatively smoothly dealt with two or three customers at the same time. He knew the shoes really well and was able to predict how the shoes would fit me or the similarities between pairs of shoes even before I tried them on. read more

This place is hit-or-miss. Some of the staff may be both knowledgeable and friendly, or neither, or a smattering of one or the other. Today, for example, I saw a sales clerk try out some goofy "ninja" move trying to retrieve a shoe box located near the bottom of a pile of other shoe boxes. The shoe box was for me. The whack on the knee from the sales clerk as he jerked the box away from its perch shouldn't have been. He said nothing. I let it go. Then, as I was trying on the shoes, I said aloud, "they're a little snug." His response was something like, "no, they're not." I thought, "whose foot is the shoe on? Yours or mine?" I took my feet on up the street to Harry's Shoes and, ultimately, made a purchase. read more

I'm all about supporting local businesses, especially when they are as amazing as Super Runners Shop on Amsterdam. Not only do they have an amazing policy for trying out running shoes to make sure that you have the right fit for your feet, but they always have amazing sales. The only non-perk is I wish they had more selection for the ladies...it seems they have way more stuff for the guys and I'll just never be in the market for "crotch support" running pants with thermal support pads "where you need them most." Definitely not a unisex thing. Otherwise, this place is amazing with great prices and super friendly staff. Love that it is so close to me and is highly superior to the Running Company in Time Warner. That place is ridiculous. read more

Ladies and Gentlemen, MY 100TH YELP REVIEW!!!!!!!!! I AM PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THAT THIS PRIVILEGED TITLE IS BESTOWED UPON "SUPER RUNNERS SHOP" UPPER WEST SIDE LOCATION! Rapidly approaching is December 12th, 2009. Also known as my first ever official race; the New York Road Runners Holiday 5k Run. This year has presented many new and exciting opportunities for me and one of them has been an increasing interest in running. My boss, who has run numerous marathons (just completing her 10th ING NYC Marathon this year) recommended checking out Super Runner's Shop for help in choosing a good pair of shoes. When I walked into the store I was greeted by several employees. I proceeded to lay it to them straight. "I'm running my first ever race in a couple weeks. I have no idea if I will love it or absolutely hate it. This is all new to me so know that I'm inexperienced and as such don't want to spend more than $100. Ball's in your court. GO!" And go he did. First they have you remove your shoes and walk a stretch of the store as they evaluate how you walk, whether you roll your foot, how your arches are, etc. From there they pick out the correct running shoe for you. The guy presented me with three options, all within my price range. I tried them on and walked around in the store. And then he said this: "Go for a run around the block." Wait. What? Yes ladies and gents. They let you take off outta the store wearing $100 pairs of shoes. So I did! I left the store and ran down the street and back up again. Um perfect. The absolute best way to test them out right?? WRONG. Just when I thought they couldn't be any better he dropped the return policy on me. You get 30 days to test them out. He told me to run as much as I possibly could want and if after 30 days I don't like them, it's exchange time! Not exchange for the same pair. Exchange for something completely different that will suit you! UNBELIEVABLE!! That NEVER happens. If that doesn't solidify the fact that this place actually cares about getting you the right shoe, I don't know what will. Seriously, everywhere else if that shoe so much as touches the street, they're yours. You're probably wondering "why would you buy a pair of shoes someone had already taken outside when trying them on?" I'm not 100% sure how it all works, but I can say that my shoes were SPOTLESS on the bottom when I tried them on (and NOT when I came back in). How they do that I do not know. They must just be that awesome. So Super Runners Shop, I sure do hope that I fall in love with racing, because if I do, I will most certainly be back for all my future running needs! I've bought several pair of shoes from Super Runners Shop before, and never had a problem, so I hadn't had an opportunity to experience their customer service (or lack of!) until now. Three weeks after I purchased a pair of Asics, they started developing large holes on top of the shoe. I looked the issue up online, and it was a common problem with certain Asics models. I didn't have an opportunity to get back to the store for 2 more weeks, at which point the shoes were 5 weeks old, and riddled with holes (at least 6 dime-size holes on the top of each shoe, where the netting had just split apart). The manager wouldn't budge on taking the shoes back, despite the fact that he agreed the shoes had not performed the way they should have (for $135)! He said they had a strict 2-week policy. Anyway....he didn't care at all that he was losing a good customer in me, and many potential customers who read Yelp! Please don't shop here when there are so many good stores in the surrounding area! read more

I am not a "super runner" just a regular chick who likes to pound the pavement every couple of days in hopes for a smaller waistline. I think I have sensative feet or just oddly shaped ones because running shoes often hurt me so I thought I'd try super runners b/c one of my friends swears by them. My waistline and club feet aside for the moment and on to the review.... I've bought a couple of pairs of running shoes from super runners, then they did me wrong by suggesting a shoe that did nothing but cause me problems. Shin splits and ripped off toe nails. So I went to NY running company in time warner center who did me even more wrong after the "analysis" by selling me a $150 shoe that made my toes and balls of my feet numb. So I'm back to super runners in hopes for a running shoe that makes me happy. The key to this store is getting the right sales person. Some of them know their stuff and listen to you when you explain what you want. Some of them just guess. The last time, I went in three different times and got three different sales people and they all suggested the same shoe, which I ended up being happy with. I also bought a sports bra there and the MALE salesperson says " that's a great bra, it lifts and separates and controls bounce really well" I should have said "oh really, and how do you know? do you have man boobs that I can't see?" But I was stunned by his first comment I just nodded and paid. So this place gets 3 stars, for pretty good service, 1 star off for odd comments about my breasts or support of them, and 1 star off for the crappy hours they are open (they close before 7) and the running apparel they have is only for those damn "super runner" types, so I have to go else where to buy my casual runner shorts. read more

Writing reviews really isn't my thing, but I figured Super Runners deserves my love. Ran in high school and college and after leaving typically used the internet to get running shoes. Over time, made some poor running shoe selections which diminished my love for the sport and expedited injuries. Bit the bullet today to go into the store and immediately Diego noticed several things about my current shoes that were off, including sizing issues and other other problems. Next thing I know he went to the back of the store and begins to bring out shoe after shoe that might help me out. First pair I try on and I am in love. Most importantly, I ask him about height differentials and even though I tell him that I am not going to buy any right now, humors me by pulling out more shoes to show me the different feel they create. So after leaving the leaving the store, I do a quick google and find out the store sells shoes at Amazon price points. Looks like I am headed back every 4 months now. read more

Super Runner is one of the best shops you can find in the City to gear yourself up, as a beginner or as a pro ! I was an " everyday runner ", profane to running do's & don't in some ways, and since I'm in NYC, I started to develop serious pain in my knees from my good resolutions to daily workout. So they introduced me to their measurement machine that scans your feet to reveal all the mysteries of your own posture/shape/arches etc. and watched me walk around to evaluate what would be the best shoes for me. I ended up with a pair of shoes I would never have bought by myself in the first place, with a pair of sole to support my arches which I would never have guessed I needed, in a size that's not supposed to be mine (because I didn't know that your running shoes ARE supposed to be a little longer than your regular shoes). ... AND I LOVED IT !!! First, the experience of being guided by professionals that helped me find the best gear for my body, AND the shoes. OMG the shoes. The cushioning is a living dream, the arch support from the soles is such a relief for my knees, and what to say about the shoes stability for my f***g supination ? The pain is over, and I finally get why it's so important to adapt your equipment to your body. And why you're supposed to be responsible and drop these cheap pink sneakers from *Lot-less* right now. Next step for me is to buy a pair of orthotics. See ?! Now I want a Lot-more (aha aha) Good gear can be expensive, BUT you can't buy back your articulations - As for the girly part of myself - that I won't shut down thank-you-very-much- I must admit that the selection of sneakers is really convincing. The shop itself is very well provided, with classic and colorful outfits. From head to toes you can match your pinks, oranges and be funkalicious or super classy. Last thing : there is a bunch of Marathonians that hang in there, giving counsel to each other, and I couldn't help but ask a bunch of questions that they answered me in a very accurate way. Knowledgeable sales staff will help you into a decent pair of running shoes. If you're looking for something simple, I wouldn't necessarily recommend this store. These men and women are there to match up a technical product for athletic users...and wouldn't be as helpful for Joe six-pack looking for a pair of cross trainers. If you're running for a purpose (fitness, racing, competition), they'd be a great resource. In my experience, doing some background research will help you get the best shoes during your visit to the store. The sales person reviewed my gate (as someone else attested). I thought the recommendations were good, though I would have liked more information about the products, and I felt that the salesperson should have explained the technical differences between the products (so I'd have confidence in my decision). I know shoes are only $120-$150, and for committed runners it's not a major purchase. But I was buying my shoes just one week before a marathon. I needed to be absolutely sure that the new pair would fit. It was the run up and down the block (and my prior research), and not the salesperson, that sold me. Also, weak selection of Gu (only 3 flavors) and running shorts. They did seem to have all the usual necessities like shoe liners, nipguards and body glide, a couple different running belts, etc. read more

This store has been here since I went to elementary school across the street and 25 years later it's still great. I haven't been back in yearsss, but came today after having bunion surgery and needing a new sneaker once I transition out of my walking boot. As soon as I walked in I was met by Michael who knew exactly why I was there just by looking at my boot. He measured my foot with their cool little tech system, and gave me plenty of great options. Even though I'm not a runner he explained each shoe's pros and cons and let me take my time. It was one of the best experiences I've had getting shoes somewhere, especially being nervous after not walking or wearing a shoe on that foot for the last two months. The store was also very clean, disinfecting every time I tried something on and only allowing a couple of people in the store at a time. As a beginner long distance runner I had several injuries and mainly because I never wore the appropriate shoes. Then the staff helped me with a gait analysis and gave me recommendations and were honest of what running shoes were adequate for me and then realized what the issue really was. I cannot believe the amazing exchange policy that SRS has. I bought new running shoes last week, and after running about 20 miles on them, they just didn't feel right. I brought the shoes back a week later and the salesman spent about 30 minutes with me trying all sorts of other sneakers until I found ones that felt better. The people were all incredibly helpful and spent time with me getting it right. They took back the old sneakers no questions asked, and traded them for the new pair. This is an amazing deal! I also love that all of the salespeople are runners, and so they really know their trade. Although the selection is not huge, I get the impression that they really stock quality shoes, and are aiming to set people up in the best way possible! read more

Hands down the best customer service for running shoes in the City. I've been a runner since the 1970s, and even when I try other stores to see what they can offer or shop online, I always come back. My most recent purchase: Edwin spent an hour with me, analyzing my footbed and arches, watching me run on the sidewalk, trying on multiple shoes and inserts. Result: I switched from ASICS to Brooks, and a chronic foot pain vanished! And if you add in the value of their frequent buyer program, their prices can be lower than even online! read more

I don't recommend this store. The two employees were very rude. I entered the store today and waited and waited and neither of them came to help me. But when I took one of the shoes on display to try it on, one of them immediately came over and rudely told me I could not do that. When I responded why, he rudely said no one could try on shoes without authorization. When I responded that I did so only because neither he nor his colleague came to help me and asked him if he could get me another size, he rudely said "are you going to buy these shoes??" After I told him that I was, he finally went back to find the new size. I bought the shoes because I needed them, but I will never go back again. read more

In general they are great. Experienced staff, like really experienced, top runners who know their stuff. I am the sort of person who is willing to pay a bit more for great service and their return policy is exceptional. I also like that they dont sell up...as in they will try to find you the right fit and offer less expensive options. They lose a star because my last experience there was not so great. They had a very limited selection of racing flats, the staff person did not ask what I wanted and tried to sell me on a pair of shoes with options I did not want. Also, it was the first time that my person was not a runner, or did not look like a runner. Went down to the shop at 59th in the Time Warner center and got a pair there. read more

This is a friendly shop and the employees know their business. I agree with other reviewers that it becomes clear the salespeople work on commission, but I never gotten the sense that anyone was pushy with me. I've purchased a few pairs of shoes for myself and my kids and we have always been happy with what they sold us. They seem to know their products well enough to fit you into the pair that's right for you, and that's the most important thing when it comes to running shoes. They also have a very liberal try-out period. If you're buying your first pair of shoes or simply looking for a change, this is the place to go. My only complaint is they often have limited a limited selection available. They usually do not stock all the colors you might want in a particular shoe and the running apparel stock is also somewhat limited. You'll find what what you need, but not always what you want. read more

This store does not have an indecent selection of shoes, but the staff leave a lot to be desired. As the *only* customer in the store the day I went, I had several shoes in my reported size dumped in front of me, and the sales girl walked away to socialize with her coworkers. I called her over once to ask a question and it was evident she was bothered. I decided not to commit to a new pair of shoes I didn't feel confident about and the saleswoman simply said "ok, whatever!" when I mentioned I wasn't going to purchase a pair today. Given NYC's saturation with runners and stores geared toward the sport, I would have anticipated higher quality customer service to give them a competitive edge. I went here a few months back. I was measured on the machine and told me I was a size 12, I'm a 10.5, and have always been a 10.5. I wanted the New Balance 1080's, a $150 dollar sneaker in that store. They offered a different sneaker saying I had a heel strike and this shoe would be better for me, I forget what sneaker it was. I still wanted the New Balance, they brought out a size 12, I put it on in disbelief that this guy thought I was a size 12. The shoe was clearly too big, about an inch from the toe. He looked me straight in the eye and said that this shoe fits properly. I asked him if I could try a size 10.5, they didn't have that size, go figure. I needed new sneakers badly so I took the 12's home, shaking my head all the way. I put them on again and said no way. NEXT ... I order my size online, the 10.5 fits perfectly, returned the 12's to the same guy. He acted as if we had never met, not a word, just gave me my money back. I have 300 + miles on these in a little over 3 months, no holes, no weird sole action, looks pretty even wear, will replace at 5 or 600 miles. If I go back, I'll buy what I want and they can keep it to themselves. I trusted these people knew what they were talking about, but they're hustlers. 4 stars only because I'm a runner, likely more of a runner than the salespeople. I want to support the running community and our neighborhood small businesses, next time I hope they just do the right thing, it means a lot. Caveat emptor. read more
