I didn't know what this place was; I just saw the huge "Persian Ice Cream" sign as my sister-in-law drove past and knew I had to have some. My poor sister-in-law has the patience of a saint; she can't drive anywhere without me yelling, "Stop the car!" every time I see something I want to eat. Unfortunately for her, that's pretty often. I thought Super Sun was an ice cream parlor but when I walked inside, I saw that it was a small grocery store with produce, dry goods, and a little meat counter with fresh cheese. No other customers were inside and the two men working were engrossed in conversation in the corner. I walked around until I finally found the small ice cream freezer by the cash register, then I waited to catch the eye of one of the workers. When one of the men saw me waiting, he smiled and came over. I told him I saw the ice cream sign and I'd never had Persian ice cream before. Well, he was just delighted to be able to introduce me to Persian ice cream and insisted that I try every flavor! I was so surprised that the ice cream was so good--not too sweet and rich as most American ice creams are. The consistency is light, soft and airy, yet it doesn't melt too quickly. It was very delicate tasting and refreshing. After I tried every sample he gave me, he told me I could pick three of my favorites to put in a huge cup. I chose saffron-pistachio, cucumber, and orange blossom. I only chose the orange blossom because he was so excited by it and said it was his favorite! I thought the saffron-pistachio tasted the best (and so did my sister-in-law), but I loved the cucumber because the tiny bits of cucumber in there looked so pretty and it was so refreshing and different. While he was scooping out three GIGANTIC scoops, I saw a bowl of hairy green oval things with some leaves floating in a bowl of cool water on the counter. It looked like something I had seen in Spain once, so I asked him what it was. "Baby almonds," he replied. "How do you eat them?" I asked. "You just put one in your mouth. Go ahead and try!" he urged. "Here," he scooped one out and placed it in the palm of my hand. It was fresh and crisp. The taste was something like a crisp green guava or mountain apple. "You can take some with you," he said, filling another ice cream cup with them, "And here, sprinkle some salt on them too." What a nice man! I didn't expect such friendly service. Then he rang me up. The giant container of ice cream only cost three bucks and some change! I skipped down the sidewalk back to the car, both hands full of my new treasures, smiling. This was my 300th review! What I love about little independent ethnic grocery stores like Super Sun is how CHEAP they are. You can walk out of this place with a bag full of cool stuff and get change back from $20. Maybe even $10 if you're crafty. I live around the corner from Super Sun and I find it to be a great spot to pick up some ethnic ingredients when I'm cooking. For instance, I needed preserved lemons for a Moroccan tagine recipe the other day. Ralph's, Trader Joe's, and Whole Foods all let me down but I found a big ol' jar of them at Super Sun! Mission accomplished! You'll easily find pantry staples you might need for your Middle Eastern recipes, like pomegranate molasses, zataar spice, sumac, cracked wheat, saffron, dried lentils and beans, tahini, harissa, bulk rice, rose water, dried fruit, and nuts. They pack a lot of goodies into a small space! They also have flatbread, a small selection of cheese and dairy (haloumi, feta, labneh, etc.), and some pre-made goodies like hummus and baba ganoush. If you're not up for making your own Middle Eastern food, don't worry! They've got you covered with a little frozen food section. Sweet tooth? No problem! In addition to the awesome Persian ice cream that a lot of Yelpers have already mentioned, there's also a small section of pre-made pastries. Need dates for Ramadan? They keep the good ones in the back -- just ask! There is a small produce section but I rarely buy from it unless I just need one thing. It's VERY cheap but usually inferior to what you'll find at the farmer's market or even just a regular grocery store. Produce consistently tends to look a little past its peak. I've never purchased meat here before but I know they sell it. The people who work here are really nice and they actually seem flattered when I shop there since I'm not Persian. I always tell them I love their cuisine and I'm happy the market is in the neighborhood! read more

This market has super-cool exotic food and pastries plus the deee-licious LaZiz Grill inside. I run in whenever I need milk or something, and walk out with a few bags of goodies to try. And they're nice, especially to nubes like me. One time, I was buying hummus and pitas and the checkout lady replaced my pitas with ones that had just been baked fresh; she simply said it would taste better. That's just keen. read more

I've been coming here for many years the Middle Eastern stuff here is amazing takes me back to my country that I was born in and just overall very nice people and very helpful you ask questions you'll get the answers right away and I always come over here after work and I really appreciate that they take the time to explain to you any questions that you might have with the answer that you need and even advise you as to if you're looking for a sweet sour stuff fruits including amazing kabob that is Persian Market / kind of like a restaurant you could sit outside and enjoy your food and really appreciate the quality of the food!! The first thing you notice about Super Sun is that they hawk "Persian Ice Cream." I decided to try some ice cream. I had the rosewater flavor and it was pretty sweet and creamy. It had that fragrant smell and taste that lingers for a while. Many different flavors are also on display. Apart from the fascinating flavors of Persian ice cream, nothing stands out. This is wonderful ethnic supermarket that carries a large selection of Middle Eastern grocery items. My wife was in search of pomegranate molasses and we found a large bottle of it here for a very reasonable price. We also purchased some produce and Persian ice cream. The owner is very sweet and offered a large sampling of his ice cream and hot deli items. We did not want to take too much of it profits by accepting all his samples yet not wanting to be rude, we only accepted a few samplings. The owner is very kind and the Persian ice cream here is exotically delicious!! You will never find any of these flavors at Baskin Robbins nor Ben and Jerry's. The flavors here are unique with just the perfect texture!!! This place is a "hidden gem" and it's too bad it took us so long to pay this place a visit. I have been coming to this market to buy essentials for a long time. For the first time tonight, I noticed that they charged me a 3% fee for using a credit card eventough I made a big purchase. I live in the neighborhood this market is located, it is friendly and very convenient for staples and has some really unique treats that you can not get many other places like Turkish coffee, good grape seed oil, Persian ice cream, etc... My friend and I went in this store Saturday early evening, a customer wearing a face shield got almost to the back of the store when she started coughing! How did she get in without a face mask is beyond me. Finally after multiple coughing fits, and me running outside, the cashier came right up to her and handed her a mask. I like this store because it is close to my house and it is clean and has a variety of Persian food and groceries and nice and friendly employees. My number one problem especially during COVID 19 pandemic is sanitation. I didn't see anyone cleaning up and sanitize the basket that people use. There was no social distancing and not any marks on the floor to follow the social distancing. There were no wipes or spray that you could clean these dirty baskets yourself. Another problem is the attitude of that red hair lady. It seems like most of the time she wakes up from the wrong sides of the bed. I don't know what pleasure she gets from treating customers with humiliation, not saying hello and being mean and nasty. She even doesn't reply when you say thank you to her. Other employees especially the old man are extremely nice. I hope this lady gets some anger management class and does something about her unattractive attitude. She will lose her customers. Respectful behavior and some smile will not kill anybody. read more

The guy behind the counter was pretty freindly.. but there wrent many selections for persian ice cream.. there was plain which i recommend the most.. . persian ice cream is made w/ rose water.. so most of their ice creams taste florally.. and the pistachio was good.. the scoops they give you are really small though, and a lot gooey'er than other ice creams.. but its a diff expereince since i love trying new things read more

What a great find for a Persian market! I can't believe I've never come here before, especially having driven by so many times. Very friendly and helpful staff! Nahid Khanoom was so sweet, she even helped me carry my groceries to my car. Their Salad Olivieh is very fresh and delicious! It's a small market, but they had everything I needed and it was a bonus not to have to deal with crazy parking, aggressive shoppers and huge lines that I always deal with at the Kosher market on Santa Monica. Super Sun is the new incarnation of the Rose Market. I've never been to this place while it was still under the Rose Market name but, reading the old Yelp reviews, it seems to be pretty much the same - nothing but a name and telephone number change. This place is amazing! This Persian grocery store stocks a lot of things you can't get at Ralph's or other mainstream supermarkets. While you can get rosewater now at most American grocery stores, can you get "Herbal water"? Well, you can at Super Sun!! I REALLY wanted to try their Persian ice cream but I had just finished a fatty piece of (really good) cake from Pink Orchid Bakery across the street. But next time I'm attacking the ice cream counter for sure!! And I know it's not Persian but - they stock Kinder Bueno (and now that's I've typed Kinder out, I'm wondering why it's pronounced "Kin-Der" as opposed to "Kind-er"...hmm...food for thought)!!!!! My eyes literally GLEAMED when I saw it and I grabbed a handful. These are my absolute FAVORITE chocolate bars in the whole world and I haven't had one since leaving Hong Kong. It's a little pricey ($1.19 for a chocolate bar? Really?) but considering how inaccessible they've been to me in the past year and a half, I thought it was an absolute steal!! Service was a bit strange. There was no one at the cashier and, after waiting at the counter like a loser for 2 minutes, a girl on the phone came up, rang up my items and quickly left the counter again - all done in less than 30 seconds without so much as a glance my way (let alone a "how are you doing?") or a breather from her phone conversation (she BETTER have been talking to someone really important). But it's a grocery store - I don't expect to be treated like royalty. As long as the employees don't spit in my face, I'm good. read more

Excellent store!! They have a great selection of fresh and hot almonds, pistachios, and a lot more. The owners are very friendly and personable. Everything is organized and clean specially the fruit area which is very important to me because if a business owner specially a super market owner doesn't keep a sanitary and organized store, to me it means they don't care about their customers; as such, quality of their products are never good. I would definitely recommend this place if you're looking for a great Mediterranean market where you're greeted with a smile every time. BTW, parking is no problem here! ...try their sour pistachios! It's definitely fun to go in and explore all the specialty items. However, there are a lot of expired products on the shelves and the owner (the older lady with the burgundy hair) has a bad attitude. She will definitely give you the stink eye while you browse, and woe betide you if you end up with a small purchase. The clerks, on the other hand, are usually very sweet. The store seems like the most well run and set up in the Westwood area, which may not be saying something considering how poorly the others ones are run, but they have their act together it seems. Great local market with a varied selection of Persian and imported goods. Produce is fresh and reasonably priced and overall, the prices seem a tad better than the other Persian markets in the area. Cashiers are helpful - super knowledgeable about specific ingredients for specialty dishes. There is a deli counter with a good selection and the pastry/sweets selection is good. There nut selection is abundant and all at good prices. The owner can be a bit grumpy, hence only 4 stars, but the other employees make up for his abruptness, and honestly, I only see him one out of four trips anyway! I am going to share an awesome experience which I am going to share with you.I really do love this place. Despite it being stuck in a dingy shopping centre it has its own charming character. The rolls are delicious. I love to go here for a coffee and cinnamon roll. I haven't tried the pizzas because they don't look very tasty and seem a bit overpriced. The same goes for a getting an individual pastry. The lady who seems to own/manage the joint is a sight to behold. This used to be my go to local supermarket as it's super close to me. They have a lot of basic stuff and Persian items so it's convenient. However they have really awful customer service. Since they only accept cash under $15, and I only needed a small item I called before hand and the woman would just say that they have the item in stock but could not tell me the price. She was super rude and just hung up with out even saying bye. I called again thinking maybe she misunderstood my question but nope same behavior "We have that. I can't tell you the price," and then she immediately hung up. Never going back to this place again. Wow, no joke--probably one the cleanest groceries I've ever been to. ^^^So, this was written while I was still at the store the very first time I came here. I loved it. I couldn't wait to come home and write all about it, which is why I started the review while still on the spot. After I tasted the deli goodies, I was even more exuberant--this was seriously some of the best takeout Persian food I've had in a long time and it was so cheap and served to me with such love by an older lady at the counter. That was my first time here. I was licking my chops while on the way to Super Sun this morning for a repeat performance. I already knew I was gonna get one of everything I got last time, names be damned, and then I'd venture out of my comfort zone and pick up 2-3 extra items. I walked to the store, headed straight to the deli and a younger guy who was manning the station helped me pick out anything my heart desired. He was smiling, didn't speak much English, but was warm and glad to help. I picked up all the containers and headed straight to the cashiers to check out. And that's where my Super Sun luck ran out. The young lady cashier didn't know any of prices on the stuff I got. Not a big deal. Really isn't. I went and picked out some tangerines while she ran to the deli to get the printed out list to ring me up. We met back in a minute and, lo and behold, here came trouble. This grumpy old fart appeared out of nowhere and sunk his hands into my bags of deli cartons. What the HELL? It took me a few seconds to figure out that this was the owner or the manager. No hi, no let me help you. Just a pair of old, gnarly, questionably clean hands rummaging through my bags. I stood there in horror while he was calling out the names of my items to the cashier so she could look them up on the list. And then....he started throwing them about on the conveyor belt. All of the delicious sauce on the cabbage rolls, the eggplant dip, the pomegranate walnut stew flew about the boxes. Honey badger don't care. The man was on the mission to violate my deli purchase the best he knew how and the cashier was just letting it happen. I kind of lost it (in a polite way). I turned around and said, "You know what? I don't want any of it. This has got to be on the rudest things I've ever experienced in any store, anywhere. Stop throwing my food around." He stared at me like I was the one who reached over and gave his groceries the equivalent of a prostate exam. He had the nerve to look shocked. And of course--spoiler alert--no apologies came, no explanation, nothing. I stormed out of the store and now I'm livid. My fridge has none of the delicious goodies in it right now that I was planning to stock it with. I'm going back, for sure, but I'm gonna search out the lady who helped me the first time and I'm gonna have her get my stuff and ring me up. Don't get me wrong--my first visit here was a stellar one and the food is sublimely delicious. But the two stars are well deserved--I've had better and I will get better again. Please, Super Sun, have your cashiers know how to ring up deli stuff. And, please, keep the grocery troll's hands out of my food. See you soon. Let's fix this. read more

I live right around the corner so I frequent Super Sun for things like limes (for margaritas!) and other fruit. It's always a bargain BUT the employees spend the entire time talking to each other or even other customers in their language. I get it, I also speak another language but it's rude when they just flat out ignore me. Even when I'm paying! They never make eye contact. I've persistently said "hello" and "have a nice a day". I think I'll try a market up westwood even if it's 5 blocks away. Maybe they'll have better customer service, that is really important to me. read more

Out of all of the choices of Iranian markets in Westwood, I usually come to this one because it's a little cheaper than other markets like Jordan, it's clean and the owner/cashier is so kind! They even have an "ajeel" corner, where you can mix and match your favorite nuts and seeds and have them warmed up in their oven. They also carry a selection of Iranian ice cream, as well as frozen ready-made ingredients for cooking, like seared onions (the first ingredient in any Iranian dish). Not sure how fresh their bakery or deli sections are, but I'll definitely be back here because of the helpful and sweet owner! read more
