I am updating my review for Superior Grocers on 17th street. Today, I ordered a couple of burritos. They have $6 burrito specials. Every day, there's a special. Note: on the weekends, this location ONLY has Menudo, No Pozole. The meat option for the burrito includes: carne asada, carnitas and chicken. I ordered a carne asada and carnitas. Maria made each burrito: meat with rice, beans, white onions, cilantro and the choice of red or green salsa. I chose the red salsa; little heat and lots of flavor. Maria is very friendly and made two delicious burritos. The burrito is a great size; definitely to sharpe unless you want leftovers. Went and bought masa to make a special order of tamales for my so. In laws boss yesterday and all the masa was extremely cold sitting on ice, now that's not fresh masa if it's sitting on ice. Suppose it's prepared masa, I still had add manteca and mind you I only bought manteca to cook the meat and chilli. Masa was very dry no flavor and it was tasting like old masa nasty!!! Never again buying at this location!!!! read more

Do not ask for cash back here!!! I paid for my groceries and asked for $20 cash back. The cashier handed me a $20 bill. It looked funny to me so I asked her for a different bill and she refused. She said it was just old but it was fine. Turns out it was counterfeit. I called the store multiple times and never received a call back from a manager. Also called corporate to express my concerns, and never heard back either. Terrible customer service!!! read more

Be careful shopping here. I shop here all the time and was given a rotten product and all they did was refund me without so much as a sorry. Today I had to return because I was charged 45 cucumbers and not even a single sorry for the inconvenience or some sort of store credit. The manager with black hair was rude and made me walk back and forth because she wasn't prepared with a register. We come for the tamales and refried beans when we are too lazy to cook. The tamales are in steamers and you chose your fav- beef or pork or chicken or cheese. Each are $2.79. Hubby loves the pork and I like the chicken. Lots of meat and a good balance of corn masa. We get a small bit of their refried beans at $5.99 a lb. It's expensive for the beans but it's a splurge. They also have a nice produce section, fresh made tortillas and masa and a great meat counter. But I'm stuck on the tamales. And the pickled carrots- love those pickled carrots!! Check out can be slow because they are so busy but staff have always been helpful and polite. No inside dining. read more

I have to be honest I have driven past this place many 10 years and stopped in there once for something really fast but was so overwhelmed that I never went back. BUT I did this weekend and I can tell you that this place is goin to be my place for produce and meat and if I need to stop of the way home for somethin this will be the stop. It has everything and MORE!! I am not Spanish so I was not sure if I would be look at out of place but I was not and treated wonderful. All the produce was just what I wanted and more with even the pastries .. Yum I walked every lane to see everything and even got new items to see what they were when I got home. My daughter was so excited to go with me to get so many things that she has had and shared with her extended family so it was a beautiful time. Buy your tickets for the Los Angeles County Fair here! Instead of paying $20 admission fee, I only paid $12! Thanks to Alana and Yuri for doing research. Alana searched GroupOn, Gold Star, and Living Social. I don't know how Yuri found out about Superior Grocers...wow...good deal! I waited in line at the Customer Service window... uhg! I could have purchased my tickets along with my fresh fruits! Oh, well... now we know! This was an interesting shopping experience. There was Latino music playing overhead. I saw pinatas, Mexican sodas, and many varieties of tortillas for sale. When I have time again, I wouldn't mind shopping here and using the sales advertisements to guide me. I have visited many different Mexican grocery stores in the area, but I think this one reigns supreme. The best part about this store is that it's a 5-minute walking distance from my place. The prices are on the more affordable side. I especially like the prices on the produce. Although I think that the selection could be a little better they do have most of what I need. Marinated meats are also really good and I usually go here before a barbecue. I have tried their different ceviches and I think it is a little lacking, but with all the supplies right there I can always make my own. I also really like their tortilla chips because they are super crunchy. They go well with all the sauces that I make from their produce. read more

If you love Greece and I mean puddles of Greece, this is the place for you nothing I ordered a burrito and it was just a soup grease no flavor very gross. I've been ordered a small Menudo and that was my second mistake. No flavor I think it was beef inside there, just filled it with soup not even a lot of meat. End up, throwing it away. Visited this grocery store for a few things I was needing while my pizza is being completed a few shops down the plaza. Entered the cashier line because the cashier just had 1 other customer and he was paying. This cashier proceeded to take out his cell phone and do something on it, instead of ringing me out. Cashiers name on my receipt is Manuel U. To owners and management, what is going on with employees, why do they feel entitled to have to check their phones while working or is this allowed in your establishment? This is very rude and not customer service oriented, as well as spreading germs that could lead to someone getting sick. He is touching my purchases with the hands he just touched his phone with, who knows where else those hands have been. In my work place, if we catch an employee using their phones while we are paying them to provide customer service, they are reprimanded which could lead to loss of scheduling, or even termination. We feel that these days customers have many choices & options, so when they choose us we want to provide the best experience possible to keep them coming back. read more

The rumors are true by other Yelpers' of all the great deals. However the checking out is a real nightmare. I am just not into waiting 20+ minutes of my life sitting in a line because only 2 cashier boxes are open. The store is clean and organized and for that I give a 2 star. I truly dislike giving a poor review but this is unacceptable. What is that old saying "Time is Money" I am not sure if this is a trend in Santa Ana grocery stores but I have never seen this happen in other near by cities of OC. For good cheap deals I rather go to Walmart or the 99 cent store. Again they offer great deals but it is a mission or project to go in and check out. Check your receipts. They don't honor their "Specials". Has happened on 4 separate occasions with chips, sodas, and beer. They put stickers on items directly next to each other saying buy 3 mix & match for a certain price. I got 3 items with the same exact tag and price and that were in the same pop up display. I checked my receipt and they charged me full price and said they weren't on the same special. It's obviously a scam where they hope you don't check your receipt, or decide not to say anything. A manager even admitted to me yesterday that it was an issue and they are working to resolve it. She gave me a refund and was polite about it. read more

If I was able to give this grocery store zero stars, I would. This Superiors is within walking distance for my boyfriend and me since we usually like to get the rolls from here for breakfast. My boyfriend went to Superiors this morning on Veterans Day to get some rolls for our breakfast and my boyfriend noticed that there no rolls ready around 6:30am. The employees in the bakery department said that the rolls would be ready in 20 minutes and there was no manager present so my boyfriend can speak with the manager about this. My boyfriend ended up leaving and telling me about this poor experience. This is NOT the first time where the rolls were not ready when the store opens. It is poor customer service to not have the manager present and to consistently not have the rolls ready in time for when the store opens at 6am. My boyfriend and I will no longer be coming here because of how inconsistent the bakery department is with getting the rolls ready in time and for not having the manager present this morning. read more

This Superior market is the largest ( by square footage ) Mexican/South American market I'm aware of in this area. I came to this market at 1:30 on a Sunday afternoon specifically looking for Pupusas and Tamales from the hot foods section. I also happened to get a large bag of their homestyle tortilla chips + Salsa Roja and Salsa Verde. Disappointingly, they were sold out of Pupusas and only had one kind of Tamale left which was Pork. Luckily, these Tamales were DELICIOUS. The meat filling was plentiful, the Masa and soft and creamy and these Tamales were really among the best I've had. I can see why they sell out so quickly and will definitely be back on a weekday to get more variety. The Homestyle tortilla chips here are my absolute favorite. So crunchy and well seasoned. Their salsas are only okay in my opinion, though. The Salsa Roja was pretty good, but had a thinner consistency than I like. I prefer my salsas to be good for dipping, rather than thinly coat the tortilla chip. I also tend to like more spice, although this is subjective. The Salsa Verde was acceptable. A bit sour.. I think the Tomatillos they used were likely very sour. Again, I prefer spicier salsas but the Salsa Verde was nice and chunky. Their standout salsa here is their Salsa Roja Molcajete. When other places make this type of salsa, they fall into the trap of roasting the living hell out of the ingredients, resulting in a salsa that just tastes burnt and off-putting. Not here, though. Their Salsa Molcajete tastes like their Roja but with a bit of smoky zing. I actually quite like it. Their snack cake selection is on point. I discovered one of my new favorite snack cakes here: Gansito. I will be back without a doubt. Likely on a weekday, when its not so busy. And most likely in the morning time, so I can get my grubby paws on some more Tamales and some Pupusas. read more

This review is based on the meat department. We bought 1lb of chopped pollo, asada, and adobada lastnight. All was well with prepping and eating lastnight. When i made up the remaining adobada and asada for lunch today, i made a taco filled with meat. As im chomping away, i bite on something hard. I spit it out and it is a piece of clamped metal (see picture). My tooth is now very painful and im having to make an appointment with my dentist. I will not buy meat form here ever again. Fishy....They don't disappoint with their many deals however, Covid 19 recommendation limits people indoor are out the window. Carts are not sanitized outside before customers grab them instead an employee inside is spraying paper towels for people to clean their own carts good luck spotting her walking around ....so is it safe for customers nope. In addition previous weeks there was a clerk selecting the sweet bread, no longer. Check out clerks were also not spread out enough causing cramming during bagging. I guess this is the new normal, everyone putting their heads in the sand throwing their hands in the air ...very big diss appointment during the pandemic ...buyer purchase at your own risk.... read more

Lots of good things here. Cheaper than my Albertson's. Except their veggies/fruits are kinda limited. Couldn't find any green beans, my son's favorite. But there are a crap load of different kinds of chiles. Majority of the patrons are Latinos, so the store gears purchasing towards their needs. They also didn't have any organic stuff, which is no real big deal for us, but some white-folk might not be down with that (heaven forbid, Buffy). Their pan dulce is really good and much better than Northgate's bread. read more

I recently had a chance to spend a whole hour in this market while trying to kill some time. I don't really have much experience with Hispanic Markets but I found this one to be pretty good. Some of the things I liked were: -Tortilla Factory - can see fresh warm corn tortilla being made and bagged. I don't know why anyone would buy the prepackaged ones in the "other" tortilla section. They were pretty good when eaten while still fresh. -Fried chicken - on Tuesdays and Fridays, they sell 9 pieces of chicken for $2.99. They're not cheap, poor quality chicken at all and I had to wait 20min for them to fry. The drumsticks especially were pretty huge! Everyone who tried these were surprised they cost so little and loved it. -Radish - the ones here were pretty humongous, much bigger than ones I bought at Northgate a day earlier. -Tamarindo candies - they have like 50 different kinds of these candies and I was able to stock up on a couple I like. Couple things I was meh about were: -I couldn't find any freshly made salsas like at Northgate here. -There was this little kid at the busy bakery section sampling every bread there with his fingers that he'd put in his mouth. I'm sure he pretty much contaminated all the breads there and the adults didn't say anything, lol. Not the market's fault, I guess. This is the only Superior I've been to, and I'm impressed. There are always two things sure about this place: The produce of variably quality, in many cases is among the cheapest around. For example, today their Fuyu persimmons were 4 for $1. They're just coming into season in mid October, and these were crispy and sweet. A lot of them had blemishes on them, like bird pecks, The platanos (macho bananas) were 79 cents a pound compared to some supers at $1.49 per pound. Fuji and Red Delicious apples were also 79 cents a pound. When I go to the supers, they're at least double that price. And at the Irvine Farmer's market, the quality might be higher maybe not worth the $2.50 a pound price for some . It's great that we can have choices like this in So. CAL. The other thing you'll always find here are long lines. I went at 3 PM, and there were no crowds until you got to the register. Each line had about 6 people in it, It can be an awful wait if a person in front of you has screaming kids or if you're on crutches - which I was once in this store. Fortunately today, the woman in front of me gave in to her crying kid's demands for candy, and he stopped crying. Of course, he'll be hyper on the drive home but it's not my worry LOL. And, you have to bag your own groceries. This is not full service like a Von's or Albertson's. You can always tell the newbies who stand around waiting for someone to bag their stuff. "Hey, when it comes to bagging, it's all about you!". Think big warehouse Mexican style grocery store, complete with a Panaderia with cheap pastries of good to mediocre quality. If you wrap it tightly in plastic, you can reheat it the next morning in a very low heat setting for 10 minutes, and it's much better. Their meat department has some stuff like thin sliced beef for making jerky, the ever unused in the US tripe, soft white cheese like Cacicque, etc, The have some cool stuff like the Jarrito Mexican style bottled sodas that were 50 cents. Overall, it's a cheaper place to shop. Selections, esp. of Mexican goods, is very good. It gets crazy on Friday nights and all weekend. So plan for that. read more

This is the supermarket closest to me, cross the street and I'm there. Didn't like the store at first but like it better now that they've fixed up the place a little bit. The aisles are wider so it's no longer claustrophobic. You wouldn't run into someone else's cart as often as then lol. There is a good selection of fresh veggies and food. There's an ok selection of beer and wine (nothing fancy). I think the store has improved on their selection of items and have started to include some of the items we used to make the trek for at the Albertsons which is a little farther away. Not quite there yet but getting better. I like that they put the deli at the front of the store beside the bakery. You can purchase roasted chicken, fried chicken too (I think) and freshly made ceviche, salsa and guacamole! Bakery is pretty good too. Freshly made bread available. I travel here once in awhile because we do not have any large latin grocery stores south of Santa Ana. I always get great prices on almost everything. Today I want to say we went to there hot food section and I took home a whole grilled chicken. So use to El Pollo loco and similar chicken restaurants. This was by far the best we ever had. I have been coming to this store for a long time because it is so close to home. I went tonight without a mask. I have a medical condition at the moment that won't allow me to wear one. I needed one item, garlic. Patricia an employee there was incredibly unprofessional. She approached me, I explained the situation to her she began to shout at me and tell me to leave. I waited at the entrance to speak to a manager. The manager offered a solution. Patricia passed by again and continued to talk down to me, argue, shout, and be incredibly rude. I have never experienced this at a grocery store. What kind of customer service is that? I left immediately and went to Albertsons down the street. No issues there. I will not give my hard earned money to a business who has an employee who can treat a customer like that. She did it right in front of a manager who did nothing. I was just floored. read more
