My father in law born in '58 was raised in West Grove and before moving closer to main street, grew up going to this family owned business here (he claimed he remembered seeing the original family members who started it all) with his mother and grandmother. My own parents lived around the corner for 30 years before recently moving. My dad and I always used to race here to get our weekend dinner supplies. All in all, this is a great shop. Personable people (family owned for sure), affordable prices, GREAT quality food, clean and full of history. I've even heard from other people who grew up in the area all the way at my work in LA county who rave about that store. I've been going to Brees' on and off for over a decade. I'm honestly surprised I hadn't 5 stars them sooner. All sandwiches are $12-15 depending on what you order. I got the $15 Italian with everything and it was loaded with fresh veggies, Boar's Head meats and cheese, mayo, mustard, etc. Previously I've gotten sliced meat by the pound as well. Staff is helpful and if you aren't sure what cut you want to buy on the raw meats...just ask! The customer behind me said his Dad wanted pork chops to smoke on the Traeger. They helped him pick the right cut & optional if you want it seasoned or as is. There's a few potatoes, onions, and seasoning in the shelves. A great one stop shop option! We drove down here because my husband was looking for a smoked ham. We called and they had two in stock, so we went ASAP as we were having a hard time finding what he needed on short notice. Most butchers we called said they would have them in stock closer to Christmas, but we needed one now. Walked in and the smell was AWFUL. Like rotting meat and ammonia. We did ask about the ham, turns out they only had huge ones, way bigger than what we needed, although they offered to cut it in half. But the price was insane at $5.99 a lb, so we left. Honestly, I wouldn't have even felt comfortable buying anything here based on the smell. All the cases were fogged up and I could barely even see what meat they had in there. How can they work in there all day with that smell?? We ended up finding the ham he wanted somewhere else at only $1.69/lb. So glad we didn't risk it buying one here! read more

Went to get some chicken for dinner and a young kid was working. He got the chicken, wrapped it up, and by the time I got home the smell was coming thru the packaging . There is no way that he didnt smell that while wrapping it up. Took it back and someone else was working up front and tried to sell me other chicken from display case. That is very dangerous and wrong. I won't ever go there again since it's clear that they are only concerned about one thing. Make that money no matter who it harms. That is bad business! read more

My girlfriend asked for a ribeye, and we were given what looks like a ny strip. Steak was not trimmed with quite a bit of gray scale Cooked the steak until internal temp of 140-145. After slicing the meat it looks so unappealing. It looks somewhat processed and like meatloaf. I love mom and pop shops. This particular store has apparently been here for over 60 years! The shop has some old school charm to it, but that's where the problem also lies- this place has an awful smell inside. Having worked in meat and seafood prep myself, I can tell you that this place hasn't been deep-cleaned in a very long time. There was the smell of stale meat / blood that permeated the location. Several cracked areas on the floor had sawdust thrown over it to conceal whatever was hiding there. There was dirt / blood / grime in almost every corner and surface here. I surmised that most of the awful smell had to be coming from the wooden floor of the meat prep area. A wooden floor in a kitchen that prepares meat should not exist in a modern setting. I've no doubt that the staff here has their hearts in the right place, as guest service is not one of my issues with Bree's Meats. I have gone to this meat market for a leg of lamb for many years . my last trip was very disappointing. I order a leg of lamb as a phone order. and had scheduled for pickup the 22nd. I wasn't feeling well and called to change my pickup to the 23 rd. i was told by phone that there was two meats prime rib and leg of lamb ,I told him I never ordered the prime rib that I wanted the leg of lamb not the prime. rib I never placed a ordered for that meat. he sounded confused so I repeat my order to confirmed the leg of lamb only he said ok to the changes and pick up date to the 23 rd . im coming from Fullerton to pick up what I thought was a leg off lamb when I got to the meat market it had a foul Odor and meat didn't look good . I got help gave him my last name and first name . I guess he didn't understand my names so I repeated it again not sure what happed after that but the person that placed my phone order approached and said that I did not order the leg of lamb I ordered the prime rib and there is nothing that I had ordered leg of lamb. and he had been trying to call me. I had no message that he had called, the option he gave me was he can order a leg of lamb and he can get it by the 23rd but he has to place the order . i couldn't stand the smell and the meat quality that they had out so I just said I want to do some grocery shopping at the Vons next door and I will think about. I was told to not wait to long. I didn't go back. Very poor service for both phone and in store. The place smells really off... I know butcher shops often have a strange smell so I didn't want to be overly picky about that but in retrospect I should have just left. I ended up ordering a sandwich but it was absolutely awful. The roast beef smelled bad and it was very very dry. The cheese was crusty and dry too. The bread was super wet and soggy with spread. The tomato and lettuce were wilted and old. There are flies everywhere, they don't close the fridge for to the sandwich box. In looking at the previous reviews this place was hit or miss so that's why I took that chance but i deeply regret it. The service was fine but it certainly doesn't make up for everything else that was bad. The other meats in the case looked discolored so try at your own risk. I ended up tossing the sandwich for fear of food poisoning. Lesson learned, 15 bucks down the drain. read more

The wait time was a little lengthy, but given the fact that they were slammed with other jobs, and it was around the holiday season, it was ok. It was evident that they were busy because the packaging of the finished product was a little messy, unlike the last job I had done there, where it was neatly packaged and clearly labeled. "Keith", I believe is the name of the person, who is possibly the owner was friendly and professional. However, a younger guy who worked up front and answered the phone a couple times, could be a little more friendly and professional. He was not very approachable and borderline rude when spoken to. We've been coming here for years and have been very happy with the quality of the meats and friendliness of the staff, however my last visit, just this week was very disappointing. There was very little meat in the case, the store felt dirty and unkempt, and unbelievably I was the only customer in the store at lunchtime which used to be crowded with folks buying subs. It pains me to leave this review, as I've been a customer for over 20 years. But something needs to be done about the cross contamination happening here. Walked in, lady behind the counter was trimming chicken with no gloves on. Asked for a tri tip, she proceeded to get one out of the case WITHOUT washing her hands or putting on gloves. She then takes my debit card in the same unwashed hands!! Flies were everywhere in the store. This is not the 1st time I've noticed unsafe handling of the meat. Came here for the first time a couple of weeks ago and was excited to try their sandwiches after reading reviews on it. Didn't wait too long as there was only one butcher in the shop and 3-4 customers ahead of me. I ordered a pastrami sandwich and was short on time and starving. The owner and his family were there and were excited that I was trying their food for the first time. Don't get me wrong, I want to reiterate that the staff was friendly and welcoming. The sandwich looked great, but I was very off-put by the their hygiene practices--thus the 2 star review. The owner helped multiple customers ahead of me and handled money. When he went to make my sandwich, he didn't wash his hands nor use gloves. I tried to be understanding but he also pulled a knife out of his apron to cut my sandwich (not sure what else that knife is used for). Handling money and raw meats without gloves, then putting together a sandwich for a customer should be a health concern, whether we are in a pandemic or not. I'm disappointed that I had to toss the sandwich away. I typically speak up on these occasions but it was hard to with his family there having so much excitement that they were winning over a new customer. If the situation was a bit different, I'm sure I would return on more lunch breaks. This family-owned business seemed like they loved what they did. Chad Chadams Chadmeister A. was correct about the pastrami. I had to immediately go out and get the pastrami sandwich since he claims it's better than the hat. I was skeptical when the guy threw the pastrami in the microwave. I was also shell shocked when I was told "We're out of sliced pickles". The guy watched on as my face lost all color, my eye started twitching, and my flight or fight instinct kicked in. When all hope was lost I saw the giant jar of pickles on the counter, one I've purchased many a pickle out of of. I said "I'll buy one of those pickles and you slice it up for me and put in on the sandwich... I can't have pastrami without pickles". He smiled and said "Nah, I'll slice it up for ya and not charge you.... we should have pickles". Disaster avoided! Thank you Bree's! The sandwich was great. The pastrami was tender and well seasoned. I couldn't even tell it was microwaved. As I mentioned in past reviews for this place they have the best bread ever. Shocking they get it from Sam's Club. While waiting for my sandwich I noticed a jar of BBQ sauce called "The Best BBQ Sauce you'll ever taste". That's literally the name of it. I had to take up this challenge and purchase a jar. To my shock and bewilderment it is literally the best BBQ sauce I've ever tasted. I dipped some Von's potato wedges into it and was blown away. Last night I made a meatloaf from Bree's meatloaf mix(makes excellent meat balls too) and topped it with the BBQ sauce. Wow.... it's thick and sticks to the meat. Made for a great meatloaf topper.
