I came here because my friend said they sell prime rib. I drove thirty minutes to get it! Over the phone, the guy said bone in is $27.99 and no bone is $30.99. Once I got there, the guys were friendly and attentive. In addition to different meats, they had seafood and innards in the fridge. On the shelves, they had all sorts of seasoning, tortilla chips, some produce, charcoal, and other condiments. The older man who rung us out at the register was totally like your friendly elder neighbor with white hair and glasses. This made it seem like a nice mom n pop butchery. Before they wrapped it up, they asked if I wanted seasoning. I said sure. When I got home to open it, the meat smelled really nice. It was $165 ish for 5 ish pounds of bone-in prime rib. It was tied up already, and maybe I should have asked them to help me trim the fat. I didn't see if they sold horse radish, but the digital meat thermometer they had was $16.99. Gem Meats must be protected. Honestly, I'm not into all these new high end butcher shops. You can get a few neat things, but everything becomes insanely expensive. By comparison, Gem now seems quite reasonable. It's a no frills old school neighborhood butcher shop and I love it. Slightly more expensive than the grocery store, but so much better. I've picked up some giant beef plate ribs here- they come out great and they're priced pretty well. When I want to go a little extra I'll get prime grade tri-tips and they come out great. It really makes a huge difference. After shopping here and stopping by Vendome next door, you can have a great afternoon. read more

I wish I had made the leap to come here earlier--I've been missing out! So far, I've tried the Italian sausage and ham shanks, and both are outstanding! After years of chewy Italian sausage with additives and questionable meat, it's a big upgrade. The meat is tender and flavored well (not overwhelming). At $5.99/lb, it's only a couple bucks more than Target, but much higher quality. Smoked ham hocks are kinda hard to find, so I'm so excited that Gem not only carries them regularly, they are the full shank. That makes it way meatier. It wasn't even more expensive than the big grocery stores. The butcher even cut mine into smaller pieces so that the flavor would come out of the bone better. The meat around the bone is so thick--it's a world of difference! And last, but not least, the staff are all very helpful and friendly. As a newbie, they took a few minutes to introduce me to their store and philosophy. It feels like being served at a gas station of the 50s. They also sell various condiments, snacks, cookies and canned goods, many of quality Italian brands. When I come into some more money (I wish!), I'd love to try the more premium cuts they offer. Disclaimer: I've known the new owners for over 25 years before Gem and I'm in the pork industry myself. With that said, Gem has delivered every trip. Steaks are perfectly trimmed and the Spencer steaks have become my wife's fav! Sous vide to 130 and sear and they are life changing. And better priced then Costco. Picked up a 23# Turkey for thanksgiving that was one of the best I've ever had. Their deli meats and prepared meals are all spot on especially the twice baked potatoes...plus one can feed 2-3 ppl, they're HUGE! Today I picked up a duck breast and bone marrow bones, things that are hard to find these days. They will be adding an imported cheese section that I expect to be my new home away from home and the produce is ALWAYS fresh and top shelf. All this and the staff is always ready and willing to help, even when busy they at least knowledge you're there while helping others. Old school butcher shop. Many regulars. They carry Boars Head lunch meat which is top of the line. I got the house made beef jerky because of another review but, I am not impressed. It's dry, dry, sal, but nothing else, no smoke, and tastes old. There are a few imported snacks but they are super expensive and dusty. I got a brownie by the register that had no branding that was good. The store is small but many items have no pricing. There was a chest style freezer that had some items I weren't sure if it was for human consumption or for pet foods. Labeling isn't clear. One pack was clearly wings and had a price but no description. I came for marrow bones but there where none in the cases, no signs, and only after I was going to leave I mentioned it and they told me that they did have them. There are temporary walls in one dark corner, and what used to be refrigerated shopping sections that are now piled with miscellaneous items that seem like there's no plan or purpose. And I thought maybe they were maybe planning something new with the temporary wall area but I found a picture it in the background of a review from 8 years ago. There are small aluminum pans by the registers that maybe they serve something hot in?!?!? Not sure because they're no signs or indications that they are anything but maybe a forgotten reason from a long time ago. Everyone looked tired. I left feeling tired too. read more
