Reasonable, Honest, Professional and Courteous Plumber!…read more Over this past weekend on Saturday, Nov 11th, a neighbor alerted me to the fact that water was running down our driveway at a pretty high rate. I had hoped the issue was with sprinkler system, but sadly it was with our water main between the meter and our home. I spent most of Saturday afternoon and all-day Sunday trying to locate the leak in our yard with countless hours of digging. Finally, on Monday early afternoon Roto Rooter came out with specialized Sonar equipment to narrow in on the leak. They helped find a copper pipe (house side) and PVC pipe (yard side) that met under a poured concrete sidewalk to access our backyard. And then provided me an estimate of nearly $4000 to perform the repair, which would take approximately 3 hours. I just couldn't believe the price.... so, I turned them down. I spent the rest of Monday and most of Tuesday was focused on digging under the sidewalk to find the transition point between PVC and copper, which happened to be the point of failure. I also contacted two (2) different plumbers recommended by friends for estimates. One was willing to do the work at hourly rate and a fraction (less than a third) of Rotor Rooter but still pricey for what I knew needed to be done. The other was Dennis with Austin Area Plumbing. I called Dennis on Monday late afternoon, and he spent time with my on the phone hearing about my saga, the work I had done to uncover the leak, expose the pipes and reduce the repair work. He even looked at pictures I texted him to get a sense of the issue. In the end, Dennis said, the more you can do to minimize my work, the more it will save you. He was a man of his word! Dennis put my on his schedule for Wednesday around noon. On Tuesday, Dennis checked in with me on my progress and if I could still use his help, which I did. Finally, on Wednesday, he showed up promptly around noon with txt updates of his heading my way. Upon arrival, Dennis surveyed my preparation and acknowledged that I had done all the "HARD" work in digging and exposing the issue. He proceeded to cut out the damaged pipes, discuss the pros and cons of two options with me, and then proceeded with an agreed to plan-of-attack. We agreed to use PEX with copper-to-PEX fittings on the house side and PVC-to-PEX fittings on the yard side with a slightly bowed 1" PEX tube under the sidewalk to restore the water supply. After a little over an hour he was done, then we just had to wait for glue to cure and then test the repair. Finally, the moment of truth... water turned on and no leaks... Hooray! In the end, Dennis was the best option for us and the more reasonable price. I cannot thank Dennis with Austin Area Plumbing enough. He is a true saint! We trusted him as he had been communicative up until the last payment, despite surplus charges that seemed inaccurate and pressure to pay installments ahead of time. He was a nice guy and we had spent a lot of time with him and felt like we got to know him personally, so we were willing to help him out as it seemed he was doing good work, alas on a strange and inconsistent schedule. To this day nearly 3 months later, we have not heard from him despite him having collected 5 figures from us. We gave him many opportunities to get back in touch without any hard feelings, but I could not hold off on leaving a review any longer as this was really not okay and others should be weary if he has not abandoned this business name.

Every homeowner's nightmare - an email from Austin Water stating you may have a leak due to a large…read morespike in water consumption that has been occurring for several days and is not decreasing! We checked all water sources in the house and found nothing. We then searched outside and found a large pool of standing water in an area of our otherwise dry front yard. Time to call a plumber. Was referred to Olde Skool Plumbing and gave them call. I spoke with Joe, the owner, and he stated he could come by the next day and assess the situation and work up a quote for us. He also stated the initial visit would not cost us anything, so I figured let's see what he comes up with. Joe arrived the next day as promised and was friendly and professional from the first minute we met. He took the time to find out what we had already tried related to shutting off our main water and inspecting all interior water connections and then inspected the standing water in our front yard. He agreed that was most likely the source of our leak. He advised us of his hourly rate and gave us an estimate of how long he believed it would take to do some preliminary digging into our yard to find a potential leak. The rates and plan of action discussed were reasonable, so we agreed. Fortunately, after an hour or so of digging, Joe quickly found the leaking pipe connection and began repairs. The underground pipe was quite old and was obviously compromised by the root systems growing all around it which Joe had to thin out and remove with a handheld saw before replacing the faulty section of pipe and installing new connections. Joe had an assistant for much of the digging but had no hesitation personally getting into the now wet, muddy trench to ensure the pipe replacement was correctly installed. It was obvious watching him that Joe took great pride in his work and truly cared about ensuring the job was completed as promised. There were several times he could have handed a messy portion of the repair over to his assistant but chose to perform the task on his own. All repairs were completed within the time frame discussed and when Joe connected a pressure gauge to one of our outside faucets (which he replaced as well for a very reasonable price when asked!) it showed consistent pressure with no signs of leaks! It was dark at this point and Joe asked if he could return to tomorrow in the daylight to fill in the repair hole and clean up the area. I agreed and paid him with a credit card. This is where many service companies will leave you short - not show up as promised simply to clean up when they've already been paid. Not Joe and Olde Skool Plumbing! He arrived as promised with many bags of new dirt (no charge) and spent a great deal of time filling in the repair hole in our yard and packing it down to look as good as new! He also used a hose to clean off the mud on the side of our house that had splattered during the repairs. Again, it was obvious Joe truly cares about his work, customers and doing a great job even after he's been paid. All in, total repairs for an underground leak and pipe section replacement cost us under $1K. Very reasonable for the work and quality that I personally witnessed. I also appreciated that Joe never tried to upsell us on other services or repairs unrelated to the job at hand which is an issue I'd had in the past with other plumbing companies. Bottom line - Joe and Olde Skool Plumbing are 100% legit and truly care about their customers. I will not hesitate to contact them again if and when we need any future plumbing repairs!
