We thought it might be the thermostat so we bought a Nest thermostat and thought the service man would install it. When he came he checked furnace and thermostat and agreed it was the thermostat that needed replacing. I mentioned we had purchased a Nest and asked if he could install it. He didn't seem to think the Nest was compatible. He said he had thermostats in his truck and brought one in, it was a simple Honeywell thermostat. I asked how much it was going to cost, he said $600.00 for thermostat and install. We said no, too expensive. He charged $173.00 for approx 20-30 minutes of his time. I wrote a check. I called another company and had another serviceman come to give me a quote. He took a quick look at the furnace and thermostat and said "there is nothing wrong with your thermostat, it has not been set up correctly." He made a slight adjustment and lo and behold the thermostat is working perfectly! Nice to know there are still some honest people making an honest living. I will call this company any time and trust what they tell me. One thing I didn't mention earlier was that the furnace and thermostat was working last winter. However this past summer I did have another serviceman from Unique come to check if it would be possible to have a humidifier connected to the furnace. I can't say for sure that he touched the thermostat. He may have changed the setup and left without changing it back? Can't say for sure, but mighty suspicious Since we never mess with the setup. Either way, the serviceman from Unique was either totally incompetent or dishonest and just trying to sell me a thermostat for $600.00. I called the company several times, but they never respond. I will never use them again or refer anyone to them. SM

My family's been using them and it's been progressively worse to the point I had to get the IL Attorney General's office and the BBB involved. Whether it's HVAC maintainence or roofing they've been nothing but trouble and downright abusive. Most recently they put $3000 on an elderly family member's credit card for a routine A/C check with no parts or repairs, then said he could get the money back if he bought a whole new system from them. (A/C checks are about $100 national avg.) Prior to that they misdiagnosed a furnace part (draft inducer) as having high amps and about to fail at any time, recommended a new furnace. The furnace and draft inducer have been fine 14 years since they said that. Before that they did a sloppy roof job by actually nailing shingles over the old shingles, much easier for an unskilled roofer except that the old shingles start rotting between the new shingles and the membrane. Please find a more reputable company like Cahill, etc. for furnace or a/c maintenance and anyone else for roof work.

We called back & left a message asking them to return and help us out. I imagine they were busy on that day as it was 84 degrees, it's been a week without any follow up. After returning from a long day at work (to be followed by another early morning), I was able to solve the problem! It turns out the work was left un-finished, and the HVAC would not function due to some electrical tape. I'm not an expert, but may I politely suggest using better quality tape next time, or putting the MF'ing furnace back together. Thankfully, I was able to complete the job late the same night by removing the electrical tape placed over the safety switch, and then used a screwdriver to reassemble the cover, which then closes the safety switch. Still haven't heard back from my 2nd follow-up call and the photos I'd provided. In reviewing the bill I see I only paid for a diagnostic and the materials, but I think they should make it explicit if the customer is expected to help out with labor. Maybe shop around?

Ultimately it required a replacement, as the parts are just old. I took in other quotes previously to see what the comparison is and I thought Michaels quotes for really good brand of Carrier was better than some other quotes that I received. He came the next day from when I asked about his service. In/out for the replacement it was a good experience. I thought he ran a good shop, was trustworthy. I previously had him service my AC unit as well. He said it was still fine for now and not to replace just yet. I'll definitely have Michael on speed dial for HVAc

I said what about a space pac type system. They said that would be more cost effective and quoted it at about $30K. I thought this was way out of line for the work and it felt like they just thought I wasn't going to get other quotes since I had been using them for so long. But I did, and after a bunch of quotes I went with Ireland Air, Couldn't have been happier. They were the lowest but they we a third less and seemed much more knowledgeable!

The boss, David Ireland, has been to my house to evaluate a difficult problem. It took him 15 seconds to find my problem and eventually put in a new air conditioner for me. He explains things clearly and is very experienced, very patient, and an all around pleasure. Then I had a problem which no one could solve for 3 months. A terrible blowing and buzzing noise throughout the house. It was making me crazy. Kyle, the wonderful guy in the office who schedules and does many other things, sent me a younger technician, JOE, who got right to work. He admitted that the noise was way too loud and not normal, and was the only person I had had thus far who thought the furnace/AC was working properly. He went through the whole unit very systematically and shortly explained what he thought was wrong. He proposed I order a part, went right then and bought one, installed it, and presto! - there was no more buzzing! This young man was professional, persistent, patient, and a delight to interact with. For me today, Joe was worth his weight in gold and took a major problem off my bucket list! .......But there's more - he found an issue with my office air/heat unit, changed batteries in related equipment that no one had done before, cleaned rust off the outside unit - which was a first, didn't suggest we replace the unit which is pretty old but thought a replacement part would serve us well for a time. Joe cares about his customers and their money, and is very careful not to err. I watched everything he did and was very impressed - and I'm pretty fussy about workmen! If you have what you think is a unsolvable problem, call and ask for Joe to show up on your doorstep! He even suggested we get new carbon monoxide detectors and tole us where to put them.
