    North Star Mini Storage

I recently vacated my storage unit and reunited all my "treasures." North Star served me well for…read morefour years. There is great security here and I never felt like my possessions were in danger of being damaged by weather or being taken by thieves. Not only do you need a code (that you set yourself) to get in the gate, you also need a different one to get in the building itself where I had my things stored. The customer service here is outstanding and very professional. I never had any issues with trying to get in touch with someone on the rare occasion that I needed to. The storage areas are clean and very well lit and maintained, and it's one of the more reasonably priced facilities that I was able to find. Would highly recommend these folks if you are in need!

What a fantastic storage facility! I had a large unit there for about two and a half years. During…read morethat whole time, they never raised my rent! Due to the top-notch security system, I never had any problems getting access to my unit. No one ever broke into it either. The system is set up where you have to input a unique personal code to even enter the property. Nice little protective measure, right there at the street. Then you drive to your unit, which can be either indoors or outdoors. Mine was inside, because I wanted a warmer, drive-up space for all my stuff. Having the car parked inside--right next to the unit--is very convenient. There are other features that keep everything secure. For example, the doors to the building housing the indoor units will not open unless a valid personal code has been input at the entrance gate. Also, the unique personal codes are linked to specific storage units. So you have to unlock and enter your unit, or else the system will alert an on-site employee. Translation: anyone who is not authorized to enter the property will be unable to gain access to any storage units. Even the people who have legitimate units can only enter their own particular storage spaces. Speaking of security, there are surveillance cameras around the property and inside the buildings. A little redundancy there, but additional layers of security and protection are always reassuring. And you can use your own lock, whatever you prefer. One unusual feature is that the buildings are tucked into a carved-out area of a hillside. That shields everything from the prevailing weather patterns coming out of the north, northwest and west. This makes for warmer conditions. Even during winter visits to my storage units, the 'icebergs' in the wheel wells of my car would start melting and fall off. This facility is situated right on the edge of a large commercial area that contains just about every type of store or restaurant you might need to visit. Closeness to Costco (~ 1 mile away) was helpful to me, because I was able to purchase some inexpensive shelving that helped me get my unit better organized. There's also a Salvation Army Thrift Store nearby. They accepted all my donations of furniture and other salable items when the time came to let go of certain possessions (yes it happens!) and get myself moved out of state on short notice. Finally, the people who work for North Star are very professional, honest and downright helpful. My thanks to you two--Alec and Albert--for the positive difference that you made in my life!

"Trusted since 1972" their perpetually-closed office proudly proclaims…read more I'm leaving this review because we were finally able to move our belongings out of storage and into our new home. Originally when we'd moved from Texas to Minnesota, I'd planned to occasionally stop by our storage unit in order to grab seasonal/holiday decor and such. However, I quickly found that I did not want to go through that hassle, because lemme tell you, it's a HUGE hassle. First off, requiring you to have an app on your phone just to open the main gate. And the door to your building. And on top of that, you gotta have the keys for your individual unit. The app doesn't function properly, always crashing and leaving you stranded like a dunce. The one time I did come by for Halloween stuff in October, I couldn't even get the app to open the door. I had to take advantage of someone else leaving. And of course, there was NO employees at the front office around to help me out either. This was also the case for when we moved our stuff out, which we did across two weekends. On neither occasion were there any employees anywhere to be found. It sure must be nice to rake in hella cash from renters without even having to staff your establishment. The first day we came by to move out, we discovered we'd misplaced our key. So we called in, only to be told no one could come out to help us and to expect a call back within 72 hours. Pretty unhelpful when you're trying to move THAT DAY. We ended up turning our apartment inside out and thankfully did eventually locate the storage unit key, so we were able to come back and do our load- allbeit a much later than expected load, considering all the time lost and no help from the company we were spending $120/mo. to. By the way, no one ever called back within those 72 hours, so it's a good thing we didn't need them to fulfill that promise either. Speaking of costs, there were other geographically closer storage units to our apartment, but we chose this one based on the pricing, around $100/mo. for a 10x10x10 ft, which was one of the best rates we could locate. So of course, within a mere month of being there paying rent, they increased the price by 20%. Jerks. Also, do be aware that for leaving, they request a week's notice. (This is likely a ploy to get one last month's rent out of you, in the case that you decide to leave close to your renewal date but don't realize there's a week's notice for literally no reason.) My husband was able to figure out some way to do the process via the app or online to circumvent the "required" week, and was able to close out the account that day instead. Oh and the asphalt leveling is ATROCIOUS here. If you have a truck with a ramp, GOOD LUCK finding any stretch of pavement that's level to load or offload. I've drug these guys through the mud with good reason with this review, but it remains a two-star because our stuff at least was stored safely the year+ we were there. No theft, no damage, etc. We didn't go for temperature controlled, but it seems that there wasn't too severe of variation in temperature despite the Minnesota winters. So yes, your stuff will be safe here. To me, that just seems like the bare minimum of what you'd expect from a storage unit rental place though.
