This was very much the visit that made me realize I don't especially like Sur La Table's vibe. I walked in looking for Le Creuset. They didn't carry much but what they did have was in Cerise and otherwise they heavily leaned Staub. I know Staub is a bit heartier, but it's so unattractive I can't get past how washed out their pink color is. Walking around the store after being greeted, I found it organized a bit oddly, with a minimal Valentines Day section. They didn't have the Stone Lain Stella Porcelain Round Dinner Plates I planned on checking out during my visit but they did have the pink heart plate, which I promptly noped out of when I saw how glitzy it was. The location has limited selection and in my opinion is only worth a drop in if you're in the area and a fan of Sur La Table. Personally I like the Williams Sonoma vibe and style more, so I likely won't be back. read more

I love coming here for the knick-knacks. My husband bought a machine from here to juice vegetables and it has worked great. I have come here for one off items and they have them. This last time, I was looking for an item and found one. The cashier saw that they may have my other items in the back. She found them and brought them out to me which I appreciated. I love the fact that the site said they have the items in the store and that they existed there. I do buy small appliances sometimes. I buy my cookware at another place that has an annual sale. We bought an enamel dish once, it was on sale, and the enamel started to chip. That was ages ago. This place is largely aspirational for me and their goods are expensive to me and not always fantastic - enamel chipping. So we stay away from the big ticket items, but they have other cool items that work and if you can get them on sale, then it's all good. read more

This used to be a good place to go, but do not purchase anything in their online store. They'll offer "25$ back on your purchases" but it sends you to a shady coupon website that charges you a subscription fee. Visited for the first time in a year or two and I was really impressed with the remodel. It's more of a new layout I'd say, very open and spacious. Customer Service Friends gave us a set of battery-operated salt and pepper shakers as an anniversary gift. Several months after receiving them, the salt shaker would not work. I called customer service at Sur La Table and asked for help to ascertain what was wrong. The agent asked for my order number and I told the representative they were a gift. She told me I would need to contact my friends to get the order number. I told her I would not do that as I felt it was inappropriate and an imposition to ask someone to find an order number. Nowadays that seems less and less common. The store is laid out nicely and I usually end up getting exactly what I was looking for. It's a battle. William Sonoma vs Sur La Table. Very similar, and pricey. Williams Sonoma offers cooking classes, and sometimes, serves appetizers. Sur La Table, has better name but no food. So, the victory goes to William Sonoma! They have everything I've ever needed or wanted, and then some. If cost is no matter, they have the most beautiful pots & pans, linens, knife sets, coffeemakers, juices, blenders, etc. I'm cost-conscious which is not Sur La Table's "thang" -- I try to buy my spatulas, pans, and odd items from Ross or Marshalls. The company that sent the air fryer to us provided a small recipe booklet, which did not include a great amount of recipes. We bought an air fryer cookbook from Barnes & Nobles in Emeryville two weeks ago. That cookbook was better, but somehow I wanted another air fryer cookbook to get some more ideas on cooking, baking, grilling, etc., using an air fryer. Last Friday I received an email from Sur La Table re: a sale on air fryers and they also had an Air Fryer Cookbook - In the Kitchen by Allison Waggoner advertised in the contents of the email. Perfect timing; just might be what I am looking and searching for as far as air fryer cookbooks are concerned. I usually go to Sur La Table at the Ferry Plaza Building in SF to browse and shop. I did not feel like crossing the bay on the ferry boat; thus, I opted to come to this Sur La Table in Berkeley. Instead of getting on the freeway, we drove the back roads from Emeryville via Hollis Street to Berkeley to get to our destination. We lucked out and found street parking about 1/2 block away from the corner. Even though the address is on Fourth Street, the actual location of the building is around the corner, across from Peet's Coffee. Purpose of my visit: browse and look at their Christmas ornaments, household items, kitchen knick knacks, etc., and buy the Air Fryer Cookbook. My husband and I wandered around the store, looking for that cookbook. We almost gave up when a sales associate asked if we needed any help. We told her what we were searching for. She was great, walked us over to the air fryers and found the cookbook tucked behind some boxed merchandise. It was no wonder we could not find the item. There were only two copies left, so we grabbed a copy. Despite the limited street parking and the tiny parking lots are filled with cars, this Sur La Table is better and more spacious. It is well lit and it seems the merchandise are organized better - not as crowded as the one in SF. The aisles are wider and easier to maneuver around other customers in the store. Since I love Sur La Table, and my 65th birthday is a few days away, I also decided to treat myself to a bottle of pumpkin spice hand soap and a bag of Hammond's sweet 'n cheesy popcorn. The items I purchased are pricey, but I have to enjoy the fine things of life - eat the popcorn, smell like pumpkin spice and cook without the guilt of using too much oil. I am not complaining that I spent slightly over $53. I should have spent another $12 for a total of $65 for each year of my birthday. LOL Returned trips: most definitely. Fourth Street north and a couple a blocks from University Avenue is still yuppie land in an urban city. read more

They always have something on sale, so I like checking out the sale rack and back of the store for deals. You never know what you might find. I find all kinds of little things for my kitchen that make hosting or dinner parties fun and easy. My newest interest is stocking up on some of their cocktail bitters and accessories for my home bar. This Sur La Table is located in the main plaza area of the Fourth Street Shops. It's a shop that carries everything you need for your kitchen and dining table, from prepping and cooking your meals to serving it on a daily basis or for entertaining. They do have nice stuff there, but you can find most of what they sell at other stores at lower prices. So I do a lot of window shopping here, but occasionally I do find something unusual here and make that purchase. Oh, they do have a bi-annual free knife sharpening event. You can drop off a kitchen knife to have it sharpened free of charge. Can't beat that. read more

I tried to return a gift WITH A GIFT RECEIPT (mind you), and they wouldn't honor it. I was asking for a store credit so that perhaps I could TRY to find something on line since their in-store merchandise selection SINKS!!! I was told that my return was beyond the 60 day policy (who ever heard of that when you have a receipt??????) They told me as a "courtesy", they would allow me to buy something there and then. WHAT BULL SHIT!!!! Since this stoe appears like it's gonna close like all their other stores, their merchandise selection appears to be kept at a minimum. I've spent my fair share of money at this place, sometimes on a whim while cruising through 4th street. I've generally paid the premium for this store with the idea that I'd get good service and good quality products. Lately, that's not been the case - other recent reviews seem to corroborate this. What is particularly irksome is BAD SERVICE lately and the lack of customer friendly attitude. As an example, I bought a kettle about a year ago. After just a couple of months it broke (yes, the whistle part got jammed), so I took it back to the store. The sales rep there was very polite and nice about it, told me that they would do a like-for-like replacement as this particular product had some known defect and other customers had the same experience. So I did the swap, and took the replacement home. A few months later, it had the same problem once again. So I took it again, and was given another swap. I even mentioned to them that they should not still be carrying this product if this has a known defect. In any case, a couple of months later, same issue reappeared. This time around, when I took it back, I was told that its warranty was only valid for 60 days. And, sorry they cant do anything about it, not even give an in store credit for me to replace the defective product. Given how much money I have spent at this place, the disappointment is not about the money that I wasted on this product, but the fact that a premium store like this doesn't anymore treat it's customers as it should. Obviously, they don't care, and they don't train their staff any more to handle these types of issues well - not sure how they can survive? Do they even care? They are not going to get my foot traffic going forward. read more

I can't afford this store ... or so I thought. I stand correct as I really can't afford this store, however there is an exception. And that exception is near the back of the store where a clearance section lives. I can afford that... somewhat. I still spent way too much on a table cloth and some place mats. This store has everything from table linens to $2000 pots and pans, to kitchenware gifts, to coffee makers to actually anything dealing with the kitchen or entertaining. I love this store! My kitchen could never hold all of the things I'd like to buy from here, but we can try to make it work. Went here with my family, and we all found fun little things for our respective places. I got some new wooden cooking utensils, a timer shaped like a lady bug, and a paper cutting tool that won't cut your fingers. I was eyeing some really cute aprons, the Mario Batali collection, and a funny lobster bib. I liked how much they had to offer. In comparison to Williams Sonoma, I think Sur La Table offers more. Though it's a little cluttered, there's a ton of staff happy to help, and I don't have to go to a separate store because they carry everything. read more

Williams-Sonoma minus the snootiness! Sur La Table has all the fancy cookware that Williams-Sonoma has and all the affordable cookware that Williams-Sonoma doesn't have. At w-s you'd be hard-pressed to find anything under $20. Soap and lotion anyone? But at Sur la table the have many useful things under 20: bamboo brushes for carbon steel woks, coffee accoutrements, kitchen trinkets. Yes, some of it is useless gimmicks, but at least you have options. The also have store brand versions of cookware, such as an enamel covered braising pan on sale for $60 compared to the $200 version from Le creuset. If you prefer the brand name one you can still get that at sur la table. All that to say they have something for everyone, from the fru fru chef in training to to the practical cook who just needs to get something on the dinner table. read more
