My son and I both have oddly-shaped feet, and always been a challenge to get boots that don't hurt. During the last several trips we went back to the rental shop multiple times to swap boot brands, and the best we could do was choose the boots that "hurt least." Jake was excellent, scanning my son's feet and recommending a pair of Salomon S/Pro Mid-Volume boots for his wide, flat feet, and then spending the better part of an hour heat-molding the liner and punching out some key areas that have always given him trouble. For the first time ever, my son has boots that don't hurt. I had already purchased boots for myself from somewhere else that were too voluminous for my super-flat feet, but Jake was able to tighten the bails and add some volume-reducing shims to significantly improve the fit. Pricing was very fair, especially given how much time Jake spent with us. If I ever decide to replace my too-large boots, I will definitely start with Surefoot. read more

It's taken almost three months to schedule a trip to Mammoth since I bought my boots from Surefoot last fall, but I wanted to post a review ASAP now that I've tested them. In two words: absolutely superb. Over the decades I've been skiing, these are the best-fitting boots I've owned in many, many years. I'd decided to make the significant investment in trying Surefoot after the last few seasons of jammed big toes and bloody, blistered little toes--problems I've had with nearly every pair of boots I've ever owned. Scott did a great job explaining the fitting process, which took almost exactly the two hours reserved for it. Interestingly, I'd always thought my problems were due to boots that weren't wide enough for my feet. The scans said exactly the opposite. I'd been sliding around in boots that didn't fit precisely enough. After trying several options, Scott selected a Nordica shell as the closest to my foot shape. The foaming process for the liners took only a few minutes. I've owned at least two other pairs of Nordicas over the years, but none fit like these custom-foamed ones. Scott mentioned that it typically takes several days of skiing to become fully comfortable in new boots. So far I've put two days on them, and it's hard to imagine anything better. No toe jam. No blistered little toes. And no need for moleskin anywhere. Also, no post-skiing fatigue in the soles of my feet, which may be due in part to the custom orthotic footbeds that also were part of the process. Control-wise, the boots perform as well or better than any of the high-end, non-custom pairs I've ever owned. At least for me, the extra cost of going with Surefoot is well worth it when amortized over not only the days of pain-free skiing, but all the spring and summer months I won't have to deal with damaged toenails gradually preparing to depart. Located in the back of the running shoe store and obviously understaffed. I had scheduled a fitting 2 weeks in advance and received multiple confirmations for my appointment. However when I walked in, there's no sign and no front to make it different from the front other store. I stood looking through the 12 pairs of ski boots waiting to start my appointment but just felt so out of place and confused at how this was actually a separate store. There were 4 men getting fitted by 2 employees. No sign in, no process. I tried to connect and see about my appointment but no acknowledgement. Literally no customer service and poor selection. Probably the best shoe store for a person with foot problems. I injured my knee and PT recommended a number of things and one was to come here to look for shoes. The staff at Surefoot ask you questions if you are looking for recommendations, they also have you walk before making a recommendation. They go above and beyond to GET IT RIGHT and relentlessly pursue a near-perfect fit. I have a prominent malleolus (ankle bone) that for years, has been seriously aggravated by ski boots grinding into the bone. Russ and his team spent considerable time considering my issue. When building my new custom orthotic, they moved my knee ever so slightly to accommodate my inner ankle and ultimately create a boot that fits me beautifully. I didn't have a good experience here. I went in to buy ski boots that would fit my foot and not cost a lot. The guy helping me said all they did was custom liners. Then I heard the same guy tell another customer that they had did custom and standard boot liners. He lied to me to upsell me while talking down to me. Meanwhile he really helped another guy get a great pair of ski boots for a really affordable price. I'll never step foot in a Surefoot again. read more

Super disappointed with surefoot, since they are about an hour drive for me I called over the week to ask if they have the boots I'm looking for. They said they do and I made the drive on Saturday. When I walked in and after I mentioned I'm a beginner skier and interested in a boot and a custom insole but not a fully custom liner the sales guy completely lost interest and disappered to the back when he came back 15min later had no interest answering questions or showing boots. Not sure if spending around $700 for boots is not enough of a sale for him. In any case I'm sure their custom liners are great but with that attitude and customer service I will spend my money elsewhere. read more

I had an appointment for a fitting with Surefoot on Saturday, March 20th. My feet were scanned on two different machines, and a minute or so later, the boot fitter working with me decided which boot I should be in. I was surprised that the decision process didn't include ANY questions about my skiing history, ability, or frequency. The boot recommended for me wasn't in stock at the Santa Monica store, but one phone call located a pair at another Surefoot, and I was told the boots would be shipped and should arrive in a few days. I agreed to the custom liner fitting, and agreed to the quoted price of twelve hundred plus dollars, six hundred for the boots (a little shopping found the same boot for $400 elsewhere) and six hundred for the custom fit liner. I was then told that the next appointment once the boots arrived would take no more than twenty minutes. I found it curious that a salesperson might think that after spending $1,200, and with the goal of custom fitting a pair of ski boots, I would expect that getting in and out of the shop quickly would be an important part of the process. Nevertheless, I was looking forward to the next step, with the goal being a new pair of perfectly fitting boots. I hadn't heard from Surefoot by Wednesday of the next week, so I called to ask what the shipping status might be. After several minutes on hold I was told that they weren't in yet, and that I'd receive a call when they arrived. I wasn't interested in spending more time on hold, so I passed on asking for a more specific estimate on when to expect the boots. I called again the following Friday, hoping for an update, this time there was no answer so I left a message with my information, and asked for a return call with an update on my order. One week later, two weeks after the initial appointment, I'm still waiting for the return call. You'd expect that customer service might be a critical priority for such a niche service, but apparently not. I went from being extremely excited to be in a great fitting pair of boots, and willing to spend the money to facilitate that, to being very disappointed in the lack of professionalism and courtesy demonstrated by the Surefoot staff. read more

NOTHING BUT A GIMMICK!!! First, they make you stand on a white platform - which supposedly scans your foot. Then they will make you stand on another device to supposedly make sure they get the imprint of your sole "perfectly". That's what the salesman said. YES he is nothing but a salesman. And at the end they will charge you $250 - for a "special" insole. Whether you need it or not. It makes NO difference. Because they need your money. Then of course they will tell you that you need a specially fitted inner lining for your ski boots. Which they have an extremely LIMITED selection to choose from. And that's going to cost you an extra $450. Plus the cost of the ski boot shell - all of this IF you have not walked away from their obvious SCAM, yet. So long story short, if you have A THOUSAND DOLLARS to waste - surefoot is your kind of place. NOT MINE! read more

But I walked in recently to ask some advice about my non-sure-foot boots, and the technician (Ian) was so comprehensive and helpful that I few weeks later I returned to buy new boots and have them fitted. Ian approached his work with such craftsmanship, leaving behind any sales-talk that I might have expected and showing a seriousness and regard for the process which I really admired. It is no surprise that these new boots accommodate my in-step are perfectly suited to my feet, in short, that they are most comfortable (low volume, mind you) boot I've ever worn. I made an appointment with Surefoot for my first ever ski boot purchase - I've been renting for quite some time now and didnt want to risk going to REI in case their staff members werent experts. I was paired with Derek who was amazing from the start - he asked me specific questions about where i typically ski, if I'm a beginner or expert, and what type of runs I typically go for. The entire process may take a while but it's well worth it for a custom-fit boot. They take scans of your foot on two different machines and set you with the boot that's right for you. Most brands, including surefoot, are facing product delays due to COVID-19, so there wasn't much inventory, but they do everything they can to call other surefoot locations and stores to see if they can rush ship your boot in time. I would recommend going a month or two prior to your ski trip to make sure you have enough time. Even though they had staffing issues, Derek made sure to talk to all his customers and always put them first. He is the most knowledgeable person I've spoken to about skiing and totally trust that he fit me with the perfect boot for me. He was super personable and i would recommend him to anyone looking for a custom boot fitting! You also get free tune-ups for life on your boot if you go for the custom liner, well worth it. A lot of people have complained that they focus to much on custom orthotics and liners, which is an odd complaint give the fact that surefoot is specifically a custom orthotics and liner company... If you don't want custom boots, go to sport chalet. The truth is, they know what they are doing and they are the best in the business for custom ski boots. Expect to pay premium prices for premium results. They guarantee fitment and will work with you even years down the road to make adjustments. I am an expert skier and have had boot pain for a long time. Come to find out I have bilateral accessory navicular bones (I thought it was normal), extremely flat feet and finally I tore my right Achilles' tendon two years ago so the size and musculature of the right foot and calf have significantly changed in the meantime. I worked with Kevin (manager) exclusively since he was the one who opened the store on the day I arrived. He first put me into a machine that creates the footbed based on pressures of your feet. The best part is that you can order more foot beds later if needed. I had purchased boots (shells) separately that specifically fit my wide feet (widest last by the brand). Kevin saw that my navicular bones were still hitting the shells so he said to come back in an hour after he worked on molding and punching out that area to give me some space. After I returned, he put in the warming compatible liners and then injected the memory foam molds with a truly amazing and custom fit. I could never get this with a store bought boot. Could I buy and Intuition liner and heat/mold it myself? Maybe but I would probably muck it up and lose the cost of all of that, plus the hassle Bottom line: if you want the best in custom ski boot fitting (especially if you have special feet like mine) strongly consider Surefoot. Yes, it is expensive. Plan to spend $1k or more but what is the cost of pure comfort, especially in a sport where other costs quickly add up? Priceless. You won't be sorry and if you're reading this far, you already know that the boot is the most important piece of equipment on your body. Go for it!! read more

So impressed with Surefoot and especially store manager, Kevin. Other employees were also personable and knowledgeable, and the entire 4-hour experience was great. We were the only ones in store when we arrived, but this store does high volume, and we saw approximately 10 other customers come and go while I was being fitted. Every single other customer was satisfied. Despite the high volume of customers, I felt tended to the entire time. Never once did a customer seem neglected because of working with another. The employees handled us all easily. Kevin worked hard to get me into a boot that was comfortable. I tend to be a hard fit, with a high arch and high instep, and large calves. The boots I walked away with will provide enough structure and support for responsive skiing, yet, comfort on my calves. I can't wait to hit the slopes. Thanks Kevin! read more

I have a seriously crooked leg from a skiing accident in my youth and had been using my 29 year old rear entry Raichle RX 8 boots until a couple of seasons ago when they finally blew out a rivet. A beanie wearing hipster with giant ear-woody thingies at a ski shop told me that it would be irresponsible to repair my old boots, probably a snowboarder anyway. I have tried on over ten new off the-shelve-boots without any luck, instant pain from the moment they were buckled. I had thought that my that my skiing days were behind me until a friend recommended that I bite the bullet and have some boots custom made. Enter Surefoot. I have an inwardly angled lower tibia and limited biaxial ankle rotation that freaks out most people who see it so I was expecting them to politely suggest that I consider another hobby, perhaps checkers or coin collecting on the local beach. To my surprise the good folks at Surefoot Santa Monica listened to my concerns and asked careful questions regarding my skiing style, mobility limitations, skill level and history. The fitting process is a bit time consuming, taking a little over an hour, and very methodical. The end result, at least within the confines of the shop, was extraordinary. They were comfortable in a way that I had not though possible in a ski boot and yet firm fitting enough to suggest a suitable level of responsiveness. I bought the whole enchilada with new shells, liners and orthotics. Hell, I even bought their knee-length socks which bear no small resemblance to the support hosiery that ones beloved Grandmother might wear. The out-the-door cost for everything was just over $1,000. I was geared up and anxious to get on the slopes. I will admit that I was somewhat trepidatious about the cost and the promised on-slope comfort of the boot. A few days later I found myself riding up a lift in southern Utah having listened to my urge to follow a recent early season storm to a relatively close resort that was open for business. I took a couple of runs wherein I dialed in the buckles to get everything in tune. The boots were fantastic. For the first time in decades I was able to ski without boot pain or significant discomfort. The form fitting liners were both warm and responsive without significant degrading of the energy transfer to the shell. The orthotic foot-beds seemed to work in conjunction with the custom liners and tongue in holding my crooked ankle down and flat. The Granny socks were also pretty great although they were very difficult to put on. The end result of my experience with Surefoot after three skiing days was very satisfying; I look forward not only to this season but to years of comfort and function from these boots. Afterword When placing my old Raichle boots in their original box for their final ride to the recycIing center I noticed that the purchase receipt was still there hiding behind the brittle tissue paper that seems, inexplicable, to accompany all footwear. The faded register receipt, complete with my Fathers credit card imprint, from the long shuttered Alta Ski & Sport ski shop in Diamond Bar Ca. showed a total cost of $343.55 (the total also included a Raichle baseball cap as I was all in for Raichle in 1984). Now, keep in mind that these were 1984 dollars and I was making somewhere south of 10k a year. Flash forward to 2013 and factor in both inflation and a meager increase in my financial circumstances and the Surefoot price tag comes into pristine clarity as a somewhat expensive but absolute good value for this 50 year old all mountain cruiser. read more

Just came back today from getting my "custom fit" ski boots! So excited about getting them not so excited about the cost!! I was very well welcomed by the staff, took care of me right away. I go lucky since they told me that yesterday was a pure zoo, so busy it was chaotic. I went on a Sunday before noon. The staff is very knowledgable and young. They are efficient, I was able to peak in the shop in the back to see how they were doing the custom fit orthodontic sole and also how they were placing the clear tubes in the boot.. The entire process will take at least 45-1hr. The worst part of the fitting is when they inject the foam into the boot. OMG! just be prepared for a quick heavy pressure, I mean PRESSURE! They make sure they tell us how bad it feels before but the surprise is still VERY there!! Anyway, this goes by fast and finally, you get your custom fit boot. So as far as staff, store, they are awesome! I have not tried the boots obviously yet but will review again after my first try out. I did get a new pair of boots based on my rental boot experience and intervention by its Customer service staff. I got the fitting @ the Mammoth location. The boots are still not perfect but I can now put my feet into them in 5 mins without much discomfort. The Lange boots they sold me @ Beaver Creek were never meant for people with a wide foot & high instep and should never been recommended to me in the first place. I bought my boots three years ago. Since then I probably visited different branches of Surefoot 5-6 times both in CA and CO in search of the perfect fit. I dare say, I finally have ski boots that's as comfortable as a pair sneaker. I really appreciate the patience and professionalism of staff at Mammoth and Beaver Creek. Is there product good? Yes. But that doesn't make up for the fact that I have never had a good experience leading up to getting the product. Be it someone being late to opening the store (they open at 10 and I have sometimes had to wait till 10:40 for someone to show up). I have had trouble over the summer getting a response via e-mail.
