A lot of sweet on sweet. The rolls plus rice is a large amount of food. If on a budget this would be a great spot to get some sliders. For the price $6.99 it is a deal. It's been awhile and decided to give this location a try again and felt mediocre about this specific location. I am a fan of Surf Bro Teriyaki because 1) best teriyaki I've had in SD county 2) owners are from Seattle area so they know about the teriyaki scene and how it should be executed - Seattle does teriyaki best. But their Encinitas place ok. I'm ok taking the extra drive to the Carlsbad location if need be for a better experience. CHICKEN TERIYAKI ($14.69) - walking in and seeing them grill the chickens was exciting to see! That grill flavor! Ordered my usual and when the plate arrive I felt that the chicken was spreaders over the rice to make it look fuller but I felt that I got way less chicken than I had before. I moved all the chicken to the side for my video to make it appear more fuller but I should have taken a real picture because the amount of chicken looked like a kids meal (if you view the picture on their menu). We wanted to grab something to eat before going and found this "fast food" restaurant around the area with cheap prices! The location that we went to is located next to Roberto's Mexican Food in the Camino Village Plaza, closer to Via Montoro street area into the plaza, on El Camino Real in Encinitas. There's ample parking around the area. My boyfriend and I both got their Chicken Sliders (x3), substituting the rice with their salad (more of a coleslaw). And wow, the price for the amount of food was unbeatable! For 3 sliders and a side of either rice or coleslaw (supposedly salad), this was a HUGE steal for only $6.99! The sweet bread was very soft, indicating their freshness, and there was a surprisingly good amount of chicken that was made to look like kalua pork sliders. There was also more coleslaw in the sliders. So lots of veggies! The flavor was okay. Thought it could be a little better with maybe a hint of smokiness to the chicken but still a delicious, easy meal. The coleslaw was quite good, though, especially with the balsamic vinegar dressing they provided on the side. Overall, a great easy, cheap spot to stop by for a quick big meal. I've been a patron of SBT since it was Tokyo Teriyaki back in its early days. When our kids were small, this was a great go-to: fast, good quality, relatively inexpensive. The teriyaki chicken and the Don Buri were generally our faves, and we always had a couple of their teriyaki sauces in the fridge to liven up a lot of meals. Alas, over the years, while still fast and casual, the quality has decreased while the expense has grown. I can understand the rise in costs, although what you get for your money is a bit on the thin side. But what is unfortunate are the changes to the menu over the years with which newer customers have no experience. What used to be chunks of beef and chicken on skewers have been replaced by smaller, less well-prepped pieces of meat. The beef in particular is a pale imitation of what it used to be, thinly sliced and inferior cuts. They texture often has a pressed beef quality to it. So while Surf Brothers used to be a weekly outing for our family, it now has become three or four times a year. The service is still good and there is a nice, relaxed vibe. But ultimately, you have to judge a restaurant on its food. Not to sound like a grumpy old man, but it ain't what it used to be. read more

I loved that their menu was super simple - chicken, beef, or for those who can't decide, combo. The plate comes with rice (extra 30 cents for brown rice) and slaw. I preferred the chicken over the beef. The chicken just felt like there was more substance and was better able to absorb the teriyaki sauce and flavor. Surf Brothers did above and beyond 5 stars catering our dinner for 70 guests! The menu is perfect especially for guys, portions were great and the food quality is excellent. You could make a lot of choices and cut corners when catering for a large group but we have catered with Surf Brothers several times and it's such a relief to be able to offer our friends a high quality, healthy, quick and efficient meal. This food was so delicious, I was amazed. It was a little place tucked into a strip mall, with a packed parking lot. I almost skipped going, but glad I did. I entered to find a short menu, but how sweet it was. I thought the prices were too high until I tasted the food. Divine! Perfectly cooked rice, tender tasty meat and chicken and coleslaw that was, thankfully, not slathered in mayo. It was as it should be, perfect. The locals inside seemed content and peaceful.
