I heard amazing things about this shop and have been wanting to try it for a while. I was finally able to make my way here when I was meeting a friend from Vista. It's located next to Because We Care Dog & Cat Groomer in the smaller area where Better Buzz is of Plaza Rancho Penasquitos in Rancho Penasquitos. There is a small parking lot that can get full during weekdays and weekends. I got the mini Huli Huli Chicken, and it looked...unfortunately quite sad (peep the pic). Unlike the other recent pictures of the same mini Huli Huli Chicken, I only received one small piece of chicken--smaller than my palm--that was drenched in sauce. The others with the same other had multiple pieces of chicken and weren't nearly as saucy as mine. I felt that mine also lacked the smokiness or garnishes to make the meal more appetizing. It was a pretty sad-looking $13 plate. My friend got their Saturday special, which comes with a two-choice poke. She went with half spicy ahi and half shoyu ahi. The ahi was quite fresh. The shoyu ahi was really good, but the spicy ahi wasn't either of our favorite. It had a ton of mayo, making it a bit difficult to eat. She also got their Butter Mochi with Coconut, which she really enjoyed. I was really looking forward to trying this shop, so it was a bit disappointing to leave feeling very underwhelmed. Hidden and very tasty Hawaiian food restaurant in PQ. I never knew this place existed even though I live around the corner, but so glad I discovered it. The cashier was very nice and offered their weekly special. Service was great and my order came out promptly. They are closed on Mondays and Sundays and open till 7pm. Parking can be a bit hectic since the sports bar is right in front of it and plaza is very busy. I ordered the garlic chicken combo plate and that did not disappoint. Perfectly crispy and moist chicken in a sweet and tangy garlic sauce that is not overpowered by the garlic. The combo plate comes with 2 sides, I chose the furikaki rice and macaroni salad, the macaroni salad needed a bit more flavor, but it complemented well with the garlic sauce. My wife and I came here on a Friday morning right when they opened at 11. There was plenty of parking outside on this holiday weekend and we were the first ones in so there wasn't much of an ambience, but it was very nice and organized inside. The girl who greeted us was nice and customer service was about standard. We ordered the Kalei's 2-item plate with garlic and huli huli chicken, Mac salad and rice. The garlic chicken was the star of the show. Crunchy, juicy, and the flavor was there. Huli huli was okay, but was a bit dry for being a chicken thigh and drenched with barbecue sauce so we couldn't taste the char/marinade/dry rub. Overall, I got my plate lunch fix, but I wouldn't drive all the way up here. I'd probably come back just for the garlic chicken, but only if I had business in the area. read more

Solid four stars at a five and I give this rating because the flavors were on point and the Cooley chicken and pork. We're all cooked very well. Spam musubi was just OK and felt like you could definitely make it at home versus the 4.50 you'd spend. Service OK nothing outstanding because it felt more like a café than a restaurant and it makes sense because there was no inside seating. They have outdoor seating which was nice. I'm gonna be honest, I'm not usually a big ahi fan and so I tend to avoid going to poke places that don't have salmon as an option but this place has definitely changed my mindset. I came in on a Saturday afternoon and ordered the poke plate with half spicy ahi and shoyu ahi. The price was a bit steep at around $25 but when I tell you, I completely demolished it within 10 mins... I got it to go but it smelled so good that I had to eat it in my car still parked right in front LOL. The ahi doesn't have an irony taste like other ahi I've tried from some other places. I was told that the meat is cooked in it, I said that's fine, but don't add extra on top. For the sides, I picked rice and mac salad. I asked for a water cup and was told that they don't have that but instead sold bottled water. So, I passed on a drink all together. I can't remember the last time I went to a restaurant, asked for a cup of tap water, and they said we don't have that here. The restaurant is small, has only 2 tables, and at each table there are only 2 chairs. They have some tables for you to sit and eat outside too. I ate my food at one of the tables inside. My order was ready less than 5 mins after I ordered. Like some other reviewer pointed out, the meat doesn't taste hot off the grill and the chicken doesn't taste freshly fried either. The rice was cooked well, and the mac salad was the best part. My combo WITHOUT a drink costed ~$25 after taxes. The food isn't bad, but it's not good enough for $25. They give you a lot of food, but the taste just isn't there. Not loving the meat because it didn't taste very premium, I brought it home hoping my wife would like it. She tried it and said it's too sweet for her liking. So neither one of us is going to eat the rest of the beef. Quantity over quality only makes sense if the food is good enough to finish, else it's just a waste of money and food. I was looking forward to trying this place out because of the high Yelp rating, however it did not live up to expectations. The problem is, I feel like this place is nickel and diming you. Another reviewer pointed out that there is a 3% credit card fee. Is that why my 2-item combo with no water cup is $25+?? I couldn't tell you because they never gave me a receipt. For $25, you can get way better food elsewhere. Here's a comparison. For dinner, I just paid $25 at Black Angus for a lobster tail, some steak, and 2 sides. Black Angus provided FREE bread and water. Hot pot at Ten Sec Noodles including tip and taxes is $20. A Cuban sandwich at Havana Grill after tip and taxes is ~$20. All of which tastes miles better. Finally! Hawaiian dishes authentically prepared and flavored well. Went two days in a row! The cafe style shop has about 5 seats at the window bar to enjoy your food on site. A simple decor with spam cans on shelves and an island theme. A big screen behind the counter plays a very well put together short of their menu items. The friendly young staff greeted me with a welcome and a smile as soon as I walked in. I explained it was my first visit and the young lady was happy to tell me about their menu. I got the two item plate. The garlic chicken was a surprise hit with me. Crispy fried chicken pieces in a sweet garlic brown sauce. The kalua park was as traditional as it gets and the furikaki rice has a somewhat mild sweetness which compliments all their dishes. The mac salad was a creamy unique blend of ingredients that also goes well with everything. They were sold out of the musubi for that day but I was offered to try a side of lumpia which was cooked perfectly. Crispy and light. A very enjoyable meal all around. I learned they make Poke plates on Saturday only, and typically sell out by 1pm. Lucky for me, that would be the next day . From the video being played, I could see that they prepared it the way I like it. Just simple traditional poke. No bowls, no salads, no fillers or a bunch of stuff other people try to get away with. Sesame oil, Ahi, onions and seaweed. The next day I returned to try their shoyu poke. I was not disappointed. Served with two scoops of the rice . A perfectly prepared dish. No complaints whatsoever. I was also lucky enough to get a spam musubi with pickled daikon radish still hot, which I ate while waiting for my poke. It was scrumptious and will try it that way when I make them at home. Stopped by on a Saturday for lunch. We ordered 1) 2 item plate with huli huli chicken and kalua pork 2) 1 item plate with huli huli chicken 3) kids meal with kalua pork. Total cost $59 for 2 adults and 1 kid. I thought it was too high a price for dark meat chicken and pork + some sides. Huli chicken was dry, they must have cooked it for a long time because it's dark meat chicken. Kalua pork was very salty. Rice was good. Mac was good. Huli huli sauce was a weird blend of flavors, leaning more towards American BBQ sauce than Hawaiian BBQ. This was an unpleasant surprise as someone in our group is sensitive to nightshades and possibly will be dealing with some side effects.
