Third time coming in. First two times were cool. Real positive experience. I had a different clerk the first time. My man and I came in to buy some papers and the young clerks were extremely cool. These last two visits it was the clerk with the long beard, and hair, vitiligo condition (not that it matters, just trying to identify him). He decided to ask me a very random and impolite question my third visit about my hair. "What are you doing with you hair, is it a wig?" He asked. Regardless of what skin color or type of hair I have, I told him calmly, "it was not a polite question to ask anyone and if [he] wanted to compliment my hair [he] should just say it looks nice." Yet he proceeded and tried to undermine the issue by saying, "I'm sorry you feel that way. I'm just wondering if it's your hair because I'm trying to do the same with my hair." He has long hair and a long beard too. I said "you can pull yours up too." Like honestly what does that have to do with my hair?Just because a person has healthy African-American hair doesn't mean it's a wig. Regardless, it's none of your damn business! Being of mixed ethnicity, I realize it's not a commonly asked question towards white women or people with straight hair and more fair skin. Just say it's beautiful! Clerk wasn't welcoming. I needed 10$ to change for 5$ bills. The following question was whether it is for car wash, and yes. So I was told that change is only given if you post a 5 star review. Well I would, but my phone was in the car at car wash. So I asked if I can leave review and come back show it. Clerk said no with cocky smile. That was confusing: 1) doesn't business want higher amount bills? 2) This is disgusting how they try getting the reviews and acting like this at the same time. So, I am leaving 1 star on purpose. Good luck trying working like this. Reply to my comment: 1) When I come to the car wash everything works fine, I don't have any complains. 2) I do understand that you guys don't work for carwash changes. He was the best clerk, always had a positive attitude, and knew how to make someone feel welcome in a sometimes intimidating place. Owners are pinching Pennies and refused to give him a $1 raise. I purchased beer at Surf Liquor on Main Street in Santa Monica on the afternoon of 03/28/2021, and when I opened the first bottle, the beer didn't taste right and a label on a bottle looked like it had been peeled off and stuck back on such that it was pleated. I opened a second bottle to make sure it was the batch and not the bottle. That was off tasting too. I immediately called the business, and spoke to the Indian gentleman who had accepted my payment earlier, and he was weirdly rude, refused to return my money, and then when I was communicating his product was adulterated (counterfeit), the call was disconnected. I called back and he picked up again. I immediately mentioned the call had been dropped, and...he admits(!) he just decided to hang up on a customer (no warning) because he was busy. Is he crazy?! He didn't have any interest in my reimbursement of the money I spent, he didn't ask to inspect the product, he wasn't even interested when I said he should get a binder and record adulterated product (date, name of customer, product name, bar code number, etc.) so his business could protect its reputation and comply with whatever federal agency and health inspection requirements apply. The man evidently needed training on his obligations as a liquor retailer and should practice acceptable customer service techniques. This definitely wasn't someone showing off his customer service intelligence and aplomb. read more

Big sign at the door -- No Mask, No Service. Almost every time I go in I see no masks and lots of service. Today, the place was packed with a few no masks and an old handicapped guy right at the front in a "dick mask" with the nose out. I can't make them uphold their own policy but I can certainly choose to not put myself at risk by no longer shopping there. read more

I just bought a six pack of Green Flash IPA at Surf Liquor and the beer was more than 4 months old and I was charged over two dollars more than the price of the beer. The beer tasted stale since it was 4 1/2 months old and I hope they have some sort of way to keep their product from being stale. Must. Have. Water. This is what I was thinking for three hours today while my noggin got all kinds of beautified with highlights, trimming and conditioning. Yep, I got my hair did and I don't know if it was the bottle of wine by friend and I shared the night before or the global warming taking its toll on my insides, but I was dehydrated as a mo fo! And so after finishing up the pretty me sesh, I spotted this liquor store on the corner and decided to try my luck at a jumbo sized bottle of Desani water. Don't know what it is about that brand of water, but damn is it good when you are about ready to collapse and lick the drains of the dirty streets of Hell-A for hydration. Upon walking in I was greeted by a nice little man who said "Hello" and smiled. I then scored my big ole container of water, paid my way and was on my way! ...Now, I know what you are thinking... did she really just waste a minute of my life writing about a water purchase at a Santa Monica liquor store with absolutely no payoff of drama, intrigue and suspense?!?! Yes, yes I did, but you can thank me later when your ass is driving around SM in need of water, booze or condoms later and your iPhone Yelp App pulls up this liquor store and says, "Bingo, bitch! Love the old school 8 bus reference. Used to hit up the surf dogs back in the day, now I come for the beer and lottery tickets and the occasional desperate toiletry or can of tennis balls. Had a surf dog recently and they still hold up, just not offered for dinner. I guess one of the 2 brothers skipped town, but the other guy is a fun conversationalist. I RARELY do negative reviews, but this place is a joke. The only thing saving it is the location. 10 feet from the bars, 50 feet from the ocean. Oh - parking ain't bad either. Unfortunately, this place FAILS in all other areas. First gripe, they have no CASES of beer. I want a 24 pack of beer. Not 12. Not 18. Second gripe, they have 2 kinds of 2 liter sodas. 2. Come on...we need mixers/chasers and I'm not getting a 12oz. chaser. Third and biggest gripe - service. The service here is laughable. I came in here and tried to be friendly with an Asian man I believe to be the owner. He kept talking with these other people and barely acknowledged my existence. He also refused to respond to my pleasantries (thank yous, I appreciate it, you're welcomes) - and he spoke perfect English, so it wasn't a cultural thing. He's just a smug, rude guy. They also have a terrible selection of beer/alcohol. If they spent more time getting more beers/bottles of booze and less time finding cool paper weights and pharmacy-like kids toys for their liquor store, I think they'd be in business. They also have a $10 minimum on card purchases. Really? It's 2013, get with the times. I'm so sick of stuff like that. If you use your card and it's not over $10, they charge you .75 cents. Ha ha, like I said...this place is LAUGHABLE at best. A positive for this place is that they have cheap plastic flasks. ALWAYS find a positive. But, if you can, avoid this awful liquor store. I have been coming here for years now. Every time I come here, their service is very pleasant. Staff are very friendly and helpful. I am not someone who does reviews but I came in this business a few times and had an Asian man help me, which I believe is the owner. I am pretty sure it is the owner. He is just the grumpiest man I have ever met. He seemed very unhappy and disappointed on how his life turned out. He needs to really needs to be friendlier. Or at least act like he is... Also, one time I came, I over heard him talking about his staff. I am a fellow Korean, well Half. I can understand Korean but not speak well. I just think that it is not fair for him to talk about them like that. They are always working like they are supposed to, from what I see, but he was talking to someone about them like they are the laziest staff ever. I do not approve. Man, all these locals and no one reviewed this place? Old school liquor store from back in the day!!! Growing up here and taking the "8" bus was awesome. We all used to roll in here and the owner at the time used to give us free soda and candy if we cleaned up his parking lot. Nice people overall over here and a great stop if you need to load up on supplies for your beach venture. Nothing out of the ordinary from a store like this but it holds history with me and that deserves 5 stars from a long time patron like me. read more
