Very large selection of surf boards upstairs. Slightly overpriced in my opinion, but a good place to start looking. They also have cute clothes downstairs, as well as other surf gear you may need. You can find almost everything for surfing in one spot. I have a mixed opinion about the staff. The surf board guys just ignored us. Is it THAT obvious I'm new to this? I like their stores here. I came in the other day to find some things for my trip to Catalina and I was greeted by so many people! They are so friendly here! I needed help finding spring suits and rash guards and they said what they thought was best for what I was going out for! I love that they kinda always have a sale going on but the things here do get pricy! They are after all a surf shop and the surf brands don't come cheap. read more

Ok so peep this! I went to visit my homegirls in San Diego and the plan was to eat and hit up the beach the next day but they decided they wanted to go swimming the day when I picked them up. It caught me off guard and I wasn't prepared because I still had jeans on and nothing to wear for swimming. The girls decided to taken me shopping here and I'm glad they did. Expensive because it's all brand name stuff like Hurley, billabong, etc. The options of beachwear was big and it was hard to decide what I wanted but eventually had to picked out a cool Hurley board shorts and an Obey shirt I tried believe I can fit in, haha. The girls working in their were nice, helpful, conversational, and did I mention cute. One thing I hated about this unexpected beach trip was I didn't have a chance to shave my chest. One of my homegirl is so hot that I was not cool with her seeing me hairy. We went to the beach the next day as well so I redeemed myself! Awesome surf shop! My daughter just had a birthday and she asked for a new board and wet suit. I knew this was the go to place as I have been here a few times prior and the selection is awesome. I wanted her to be able to choose from hundreds, so she could get the one that was just right for her. The guy upstairs was super helpful. You could tell he was a surfer himself and has the knowledge needed. He helped up pick out a great board and took the time to ask my daughter where the grips should be, etc. The wet suit selection is extensive as well. If you are here looking for either a board or a wet suit and cannot find what you are looking for, I would be very surprised. Although I walked out of there spending over $1200, I was super please with the staff and their friendliness. They also through in the fins, grip and some wax for free. We will definitely be back for all our surfing needs! read more

This surf shop definitely has a more corporate feel to it. Well-stocked and pricey but you'll probably find what you're little surf heart desires. If you just want to look the part they is a large portion of the shop devoted to clothes and stylish surf gear. I believe you get better attention at the smaller mom and pop shops but great if you are new to the sport. read more

Very cool shop! If you are looking for surf anything, most likely they have it. Boards cost more than ever, these folks have new and used at reasonably priced ranges. They are always friendly and there are a variety of clothing options, posters, Surf watches, and sunglasses for men and women. This is a nice Surf shop for sure. The Surfers Journal and more cool books DVD's and plenty of items for gifts. They even have a layaway plan that helps somebody like me get the longboard I saw and liked at a more than reasonable price. Surf Ride has a great selection of men's clothes and surf gear. I've always had positive interactions with the staff here. I started surfing a little later in life than most people and with that I had a lot of questions about purchasing my first real board. The guys upstairs were happy to answer all of my kook questions and offer suggestions based on my ability at the time. I didn't feel pushed into buying a certain board and they were quick to encourage me to take my time and think about what I wanted. Great shop has a huge selection of new and used surfboards along with a nice skate shop. The staff is super friendly and knowledgable. As a beginner surfer didn't really know much but the staff talked to me and helped choose a board that would be right for me. Never pressured me into a board I didn't need or want. Surf leash problem: A lime green Surf Ride leash that I purchased came apart without even being under stress. I examined this and found the leash section was not even attached properly during the manufacturing of this leash. Gaggghhhhh! They came through and assisted me wonderfully! Haven't been on yelp in years-- I retrieved my account solely to post this review. Long story short, these guys are awesome, helpful, super positive and polite, and have a huge stock to boot. They deserve your money and it's a great place to buy if you're new to surfing and need a bit of guidance and lack of snark that most surf shops give new riders by the barrel full. As a girl who grew up interested in a lot of hobbies with insular enthusiasts (skateboarding, drumming, etc), I'm used to walking in for a purchase and being treated with condescending and patronizing attitudes. I made it a solid rule a long time ago to never give a big chunk of money to a shop that didn't make me feel stoked on my purchase. At the end of the day, whatever I wanted to buy would be available somewhere else, and I didn't need to put up with someone's bad vibes or rude attitude in order to give away my money. When I started looking for surfboards, I encountered the same I-know-better-than-you-do attitudes. I spent a couple days searching about 10 or 15 surf shops for the gear I was looking for. A couple places had what I was looking for, but absolutely no interest in being helpful, or in some cases even decently polite (Hansen's, Jack's in HB), so I walked out. A couple places were helpful but didn't have the equipment I was looking for (Encinitas Surfboards, Progression Surf, Surfy Surfy). When I got to Surf Ride, I found the board I was looking for. The guy on hand in the board room (whose name I wish I could remember, but it escapes me) walked over to help, and when I told him I was thinking of buying this board, he immediately followed up with all the helpful information he could, including what he thought of the board, how it might perform for me, how they had an upgraded version available but he didn't think it was worth my money in performance difference, and how much fun he thought I would have. He got as excited about my purchase as I originally was before a full day's worth of annoying shopping, and it was awesome. He immediately started setting me up and making sure I had everything else I needed, at the minimum price I needed to spend to get what I wanted. I had also been looking for a fullsuit, but saw they didn't have my size. Unlike every single other shop I'd been to, he chimed in with experience on sizing that suggested a different size in a different brand was usually cut more like what I was looking for. He wasn't pushing the purchase in the least bit (in fact, he started to put the suits away after showing me!), but when I tried on the suit he suggested, it fit better than what I was originally hoping to find. Sold. He directed me to the nearest breaks appropriate for my new purchase, and couldn't have possibly been more helpful or positive. I want to make it clear-- I probably sounded like a total bumbling idiot. It's the worst when you walk in to something like a surf shop with no buddy to help and not much of a clue either. I had done my research and new exactly what I was looking for and why, but seriously, I had "amateur" written all over my face. Not only did he not make me feel like a total fool (as most other shops had), he got me excited on my new gear. The only thing I regret about the encounter is not high-fiving this guy. I had been looking to surf immediately, but realized after I drove to the beach that I had nowhere to put my key. I drove around hardware stores and such looking for a solution or someone to cut me a valet key, but they told me it was too new and difficult. I stopped by the shop again hoping they could give me some advice, and sure enough someone else downstairs pointed me to a stellar locksmith a few miles away who was happy to cut me a key I could put in my wetsuit. I watched the sun set from the water in Carlsbad. Excellent day, almost entirely thanks to Surf Ride. Couldn't recommend the place or staff more highly. read more

So this has to be my favorite surf shop EVER! Surf Ride Board Shop in good old Oside! It's truly a must-visit board shop...you can find everything from clothes to boards, and all of the details you could ever desire in between! Friendly, helpful staff (possibly because it's FAMILY OWNED and not some horrid, ginormous, corporate-owned chain! You all know who I'm talking about -those overpriced, generic, strip-mall stores where the kid behind the counter is either comatose or practically drooling?!) Well, that's not the case here! An added bonus: if you don't live nearby, you can always shop their awesome website...which is ever a quick, easy and efficient way to fulfill your stranded from so. cal surf-shop cravings! Review is for Surf Ride's SURF CAMP in Oceanside This review is actually for the Surf Camp Surf Ride hosts, not the store itself. We just finished a week long camp with Surf Ride and this camp is TOP NOTCH. My 8 year old son and his buddy signed up for a week of surf instruction, and so much more. Not only were they taught surfing skills but they were able to dissect a squid, go jet skiing, paddle boarding, play games and learn about the ocean. I can't say enough good things about John who was the main instructor. This guy has a way with kids. He is strict but funny at the same time. He commands respect, yet can get down and play just like a kid. His knowledge of the ocean and surfing is impressive. The coordinator Daisy has truly thought of everything to make it easy on parents. She gets it, she has kids herself so she knows little things like a reminder to put on sunblock are important! One kid forgot their lunch and she actually gave him hers. After the first day, you are able to just pull up/ drop off and sign in and out at the roundabout if you need to go to work. Of course you are welcome to stay and watch if you choose as well. My friend and I camped out with our daughters and they had a great time playing and watching the boys. The ratio of instructors is fantastic- much smaller groups than all the other surf camps. Surf ride has thought of EVERYTHING, they have every size wetsuit, and more than enough surf boards. The location is also the best location you could ask for in Oceanside. It is close to the bathrooms and the playground and directly across from the harbor. All the surf instructors there were great with kids and worked really hard all day. Each instructor was in charge of a small group of kids- which they identified by colored rash guards over their wetsuits. They were out there in the ocean pushing kids off waves, and doing everything they could to make sure every kid out there was safe and having fun. Very cool to see even the tiny kids standing up and riding waves in. I must say, I observed other surf camps and they could not come close to comparing. There were SO MANY kids at the other camps and not enough instructors. Plus I doubt they got to do all the cool things Surf Ride Surf Camp provided. My son can't wait until next year's surf camp. We will definitely be doing it again! Great job on amazing program! Worth every penny! read more

No high pressure sales, but the staff is very knowledgeable and friendly! It's not great to hold a grudge, but my disappointment that this place is no longer a Hobie is definitely impacting my rating. The store is well stocked, whatever your board sport or beach needs may be, although as other yelpers have noted, it's not the place to look for bargains. Called about a Odysea Stump and Chris was nice enough to check stock. Came in and Josh was incredibly helpful. I told him I was transitioning from bodyboarding and he recommended the quad and set it all up. Put the fins in strapped the leash on and recommended a cold wax. Dude is a one stop shop. Been going in here for years. Was extremely impressed with the customer service this last purchase. I was looking all over for a specific model of board. Most places didn't carry it. I called Surf Ride...they had every size and model I enquired about. Talked with 4 different guys on the phone about the boards and their characteristics. Everyone was knowledgeable and also passed me on to other guys that had more details...Decided to go in and look in person. Loved what I found but wasn't ready to make a purchase. They offered to hold the board at no charge or obligation. I came back when I was ready and made the purchase with a bunch of the guys I had spoken with....all super cool and sincerely happy that I was getting a new stick...When I went down to pay for it, the cashier did a fantastic discount on the fin without me even asking for it. They insisted I take a bunch of wax for free as well. I researched the cost of the board, and it was priced exactly the lowest price I was able to find. ...to the cent. No markups or negotiations necessary. Boards are expensive, but I feel I got a very fair price. I was happy to pay...they earned it! read more
