It's so hard to find vegetarian food to go so I decided to hit this place up and see what was yummy. I'll give them that it was a busy Friday afternoon, but the staff wasn't super friendly or helpful. I asked if all the sandwiches were warm and was told yes, requested one and she all but snapped at me "that one isn't warm" um, ok then.... I opted for the veggie cheesesteak, seemed like a safe bet. It was ok. The bred was very soft, but also super dry. Like without the veggies you couldn't really eat it dry. Veggies were ok, throughly cooked but almost to the point of being mush. I guess that's better than way under. There wasn't much cheese and it was a cheesesteak so that was odd. But it was just about $10, and the portion was large so they get points for that. Very basic sodas in cans for drinks and no sides from what I could tell. The place wasn't super clean, which could be expected from a roadside food stand like this, but they definitely could have done more. And their restrooms weren't working, which I found odd. There are better food trucks in town, so I probably won't venture here again. But he definitely had worse, so there's that. read more

This was a great find in Long Beach. We ordered a Big Kahuna and a Steak and Pepper and added a cup of the the Canjun Clam Chowder. The chowder was one of the best I have ever had. Creamy, a little spice and plenty of clams, all cooked perfectly. I recommended it to people walking up. The sandwiches were great as well. The steak and veggies were really good and the sauces in them were fantastic. The price here was really good too for a tourist area. Add great service as well. Great lunch. read more

If I could give 3.5 stars, I would. But I can't. Unfortunately, I don't know if I'll go back to Surfer Sands until the tourist season is over. At least I hope that's what's causing the quality to suffer. Once again, we opened up a pair of cheesesteaks when we got home and they were underwhelming. There just isn't much to the sandwiches. Lived & worked in Long Beach for 15 years. Surfer Sands was a weekly go-to for me when I was a resident. Went back for the first time today since 2022 & it's definitely changed. The OG Surfer Sands served steak chunks, they've now gone to the traditional shaved steak. That's fine but the size of the sandwich has been reduced by probably 30%. Flavor was good but if I'm paying $16 for a cheesesteak (with tip) it better fill me up. This one didn't. Not sure I'll be back whenever I'm in town again. read more

Just tried this place on a spur of the moment choice. Wasn't disappointed. I got a pepper steak and wife got the Big Kahuna. We sat outside at the picnic tables and enjoyed our cheese steaks. I give the cheese steaks a 9 out of 10 for flavor and an 8 out of 10 for size. I wish they were a little bit larger for the price, but I came away mostly satiated. It would be nice if they offered fries with their cheese steaks, but it was still a good meal. Will return. read more

Go early if you want to make sure to get a Sammie! We got there at 3 and literally got the last 4 rolls. We all got some version of the Philly. Mine had mushrooms, hubs and the rest of the clan got regular ones. Big chunks of steak in all the sandwiches. Onions (and mushrooms in my case) were grilled and perfectly caramelized. The bread was not what we were expecting, but soaked up the juices from all the ingredients well. Can't put my finger on what was different but we all agreed there was something different about it. We got the pepper steak, the mushroom steak, a mango smoothie and a strawberry smoothie. The 50s era music that was playing at their eating area was pleasant and fun. The staff was very friendly and the service was fast, even though we could hardly wait because we could smell the sandwiches cooking. The smoothies were sweet and fresh tasting but not too filling. The bread was super soft but not soggy at all and there was just enough cheese. The steak was tender, peppery and full of flavor. I would have liked a few more mushrooms but I'll just ask for extra next time - and there will definitely be a next time. read more

Ok, these might be some of the best sandwiches I've had. Ever. They're consistently perfect. The bread is perfect and fluffy and fresh. The seasoning is perfect. The meat is perfect and wonderfully tender, no chunks of fat or gristle here! The vegetables are the perfect balance between being cooked and still having a little texture and vs being undercooked and too crunchy. The guy that runs the place is always friendly. The amount of food you get for the price is really reasonable. And perhaps most importantly, the ratio of bread to filling it just right. We made sure we made it there before it opened as we have heard stories about the long lines and the sandwiches selling out as soon as they run out of their freshly baked bread. Owner was very nice and friendly. We ordered a Mushroom Cheese Steak and the Big Kahuna. The mushroom cheese has steak, grilled onions and mushrooms, Swiss cheese. The Big Kahuna has everything plus bell peppers. Bread is good. Ratio of bread to filling is also good (some Phillys have way too much bread and not enough meat). The sandwich used to be large and with the price going up you would think it would stay the same. Definitely not the case. The old owner would be ashamed of his old Business today.
