Wanted to try as much of the menu as we could and added the clam strips to the chowder fries. The clam strips seemed closer to calamari than the small breaded clam strips I was expecting. They are very peppery but also a little bland, not my favorite clam strips. The chowder fully solidified and almost seemed more like a cheese sauce. The fries had a nice crunch and bacon makes everything better. You order from a small shop and then can take a seat at one of the tables they have. Our group of three had the clam chowder fries topped with clam strips on a sunny day for lunch. The chowder was good, but may have been better on its own. It stool a substantial time to get our order (15+mins?) which was fine, but the chowder was topped with cheese and drowned the fries out a little. The biggest complaint was the clam strips. They were in a heavily pepper corn flavored batter which was overpowering. I ruling like clam strips to feature the clam flavor. Terrible! Absolutely terrible! Shameful that she actually calls these Rhode Island style clam cakes. This was absolutely nothing like Rhode Island style clam cakes. These "clam cake bites" were really just gross. Never mind that I had to wait over 45 minutes for them! She put us behind on our trip due to this delay. I went to the gift shop next-door to give her time, she said about 15 minutes. Came back 15 minutes later and she hadn't even started them yet. Told her I'd go back to the gift shop again to give her mom time. Came back about 20 minutes later and she still hadn't started them yet. I added this to our itinerary specifically because it said Rhode Island style clam cakes and that was literally the only thing that I got from here. Not only did it take forever, about 50 minutes, to get them, but they were nothing like back home. I don't know how this place has such good reviews. We had to see The World's Longest Beach and now we're hungry. Wondering around Long Beach, WA. and Bob's Chowder stood out, that and the curious nature of businesses being closed on a sunny spring break weekday afternoon. We we're taking advantage of it being nice on the coast. There are picnic benches outside and booths inside. We sat outside and ordered 2 Cod Fish & Chips. Fresh battered cod is all I read. My Wife went in to place our order and get our drinks while I saved our spot. It wasn't long before our order came out. There was a table of 5 before us and a table of 6 after. I thought it would have taken longer, a lot longer. We brought our appetite but our order said, "challenge accepted." Small side of home made slaw, . 2 Huge hand battered cod fillets, more like slabs, . House made tarter sauce, . A plate of fries used to display my cod, also . I started in on the fries. Crispy and hot, the way they should be. Tarter sauce, also house made, nice. I knew I would need more tarter sauce and another coke. The drinks are in a regular fridge by the door. That's when I figured out the very sweet lady running food out was all by herself. Cooking, cleaning and making people happy, all, by, herself. Now, let's talk about the cod. The Cod. The huge portions. The fish was flaky and moist. The crust. Oh my goodness, the crust was golden brown and so crunchy. My fish fell apart when I tried scooping out tarter sauce with it. It was a conundrum. I had to use my fries to properly scoop out sauce on my fish. Honestly, I ate most of my tarter sauce with fries and most of the fish I ate with just lemon juice on it. It was all that good. By the way, the bathroom is next door. Huge Blue Building. There is a picnic bench in the grass area in front for more seating options. That's where the table of 6 sat. My Wife and I barely talked while eating. We forgot there was another table being served. Neither one of us finished everything on our plate. We both couldn't eat all the fries. We were so excited to try this place as it was rated well for their fish and chowder. We got our order taken, and after about an hour I asked where are order was and she said,Not done yet. I understand she was by herself but the communication in regards to that was non existent. We asked for our money back and was again told, well that's the way it is around here. Ordered the salmon sandwich and cup of chowder based on the reviews and extremely disappointed. Lets start with the long wait to order and then 20 min wait when no orders ahead of us. The chowder was by far some of the worst I have had in my life, tasted like raw cornmeal and had a weird taste to it and was not able to eat it. The oil in the fryer tasted like it's old and all things are cooked together and the sandwich just fell apart. Will not be going back which is sad because I wanted to live this place. We stopped here after looking at the Yelp Reviews, I do love to support small business's, . They do make clam chowder without bacon. To me if you have to add bacon to clam chowder, you aren't making it right! I decided to try their clam chowder and my boyfriend ordered the bacon wrapped fried fish thing with fries. It was quite the wait but we weren't in a huge hurry so that was ok. Do be prepared for a wait though if the place is busy. To me the chowder was very very potato based and not a whole lot of clams or seafood. So that was disappointing to me. These guys are awesome!! Not only do they have fantastic service but their food is great! A great place for chowder! The server and cook made a special meal up for my son, they even let him pick out his treat in the kitchen - he loved that! This place is kinda weird. There are 4 tables inside, a tank with hermit crabs, and an fake fireplace that does give off heat. They have no liquor license, and no ice. They have water. Their clam chowder was delish. Lots of clams that were tender and it had the perfect spice and a 8oz was only $6. Also has the fried cod and chips. You get two 6oz filets that and made fresh. It is plenty for 2 people. The downer of the meal was the two women. They were nice and pleasant but they talked to each other non stop and loud enough that we could hear it during our entire meal. There were a couple times that we even chimed in. After a while it became annoying. I would recommend for the food but perhaps you take it to go. You've been warned! read more

Great place to stop for a bite to eat! It's a relatively small place, but we arrived just before the lunch rush so we were able to get a table and our food was ready pretty fast. They have some smaller games, trivia and MadLibs available on the tables to entertain yourself if there's a wait for your food. Back in Mar 2022, I was on a road trip from Southern Cal to up north through San Francisco, CA, Portland, OR, and Discovery Bay, WA. I swung on by Long Beach, WA on my way back to Portland. Got a chance to eat at Captain Bob's Chowder for early dinner. What a delightful find! Love the chowder... tons of ingredients... don't know all that was in it, but every scoop was delish! Wished I got two chowders LOL. Fish and chips were good, too, especially the fish... it was all fish lightly battered. The steak fries could have been crispier though. Actually, I would have preferred shoe string fries (hint hint LOL). Not sure if I will ever be back to Long Beach, WA... I may if I decide to stay at WorldMark Long Beach in the near future adventure. =) Staff was very friendly and pleasant. Prices were okay depending on what you get... thought a few of the items were quite pricey... lobster roll for $25+ (hmmm). While I was waiting for my food, I went next door and checked out Marsh's Free Museum... funny, at the time, I didn't know the store's name until I got home and googled it LOL. A lot of neat stuff in there... got myself a nice golden "Bee Happy" mug and a couple coasters. I know... this is a review for Captain Bob's Chowder and not for Marsh's Free Museum (I will do one for them though)... so let's get back to this one LOL. To respond to the person who posted about it being "loud and noisy", it is a tiny restaurant, there ARE four tables, and the owner (only met one) is lovely. I'm sure it gets busy and crazy but it's the kind of place where you learn about the local happenings and you truly support locally made food. We ended up here as a backup plan on a very stormy day (sideways rain and gale warnings), but it was for the best! I ordered the crab cake blt, which comes with steak fries, and my partner ordered the crab roll with a bowl of clam chowder (to share). They also offer unusual bottled sodas, so we each had a 'bulldog' root beer. Everything was delicious, and we were quite full until dinner. The restaurant has recently been sold, as the former owners retired. The new owners (both were working) are a pair of sisters, who have lived here for decades. (They married a pair of brothers who grew up here, I heard one explain.) They are very excited, friendly, and genuinely concerned about the guest experience. Another customer ordered 5 fish & chips orders to go, and 1 piece of fish (of the 10 total) split during cooking. They asked if the guest wanted it swapped or was OK with it. (Never seen that before!) Lunch was pricey- the crab dishes are $20-25 each, but we were stuffed. There are cheaper options on the menu - chowder only would be a perfectly filling meal for $7-12, depending on how hungry you are. Inside is small, only 3 tables, but there are a few more outside. (I didn't count because it wasn't a day where we could eat outside.) Would definitely return / recommend, and wish the new owners luck as the summer season approaches! read more

On our way back to Seattle from our trip to Seaside, OR. We had to go out of way just a tad, but the quest was for some fish n chips. The place is small, operating out of a small house kitchen, 4 tables inside and 3 more outside. It's a bit touristy! The chowder was good the bacon wrapped oysters were pretty tasty and the large chunk of cod was very tasty. However the fries, and calamari were so so. They just dumped the product in the basket and served us. The grease didn't fully drain off the fries and calamari so that was a turn off. When I order I thought I ordered an order of halibut fish n chips so after waiting 30 minutes to get our order and they didn't come I was a little shocked. But the server promptly brought the receipt over and I wasn't charged. In hindsight sight probably a good thing because the cod n chips was too much for one person so I ended up sharing. With my MIL. It is worth noting they do post they are a small outfit and you could have a wait. So in other words first in first out. They could probably improve that but they have a small tabletop fryer. The team was friendly and it might be worth the visit to get some fish n chips. Best part is public restrooms were across the street and very clean. read more

Stopped by with some friends to try the chowder. The place is tiny and cramped, but that wasn't a big deal. We ordered, paid, and squeezed into a small booth to wait. That's when I noticed how dirty the place was. The windowsills were covered in dust and dead bugs, and the condiments at the condiment station looked old and unwashed. When our chowder arrived, it was barely warm, too thick, and tasted like soupy instant mashed potatoes. Each chowder came with a large bread stick that tasted old, dry, and stale. I went to use the pepper mill at our table and had to brush something that looked like a cobweb off of it. In the end, almost everything we ordered was thrown away, uneaten. It pains me to leave bad reviews for small businesses, but there were so many things wrong with our visit here that I felt compelled to speak out. This place is in desperate need of a deep cleaning. I realized it would have been less expensive to just order two-two piece meals and get the extra coleslaw. She tossed in on them! They were serving clam chowder with bacon or without! Nice! After checking yelp reviews, we decided to give Captain Bobs a try (we had gotten clam chowder the night before at Long Beach Tavern and it was so good, we almost went back for more the next day but ended at here instead. Soooo glad we did!!!). The reviews are true--this is the hands down, best clam chowder either of us have ever had. Thick, creamy, with big chunks of clam. The consistency was perfect and the taste was simple yet amazingly delicious. On our drive back home, we discussed several times how silly it was that we didn't take a quart to go.
