Went to her years ago when I lived in Kona and had an atrocious experience with my infant who had PHPV and cataracts. He was 2 months old and I waited on her filled waiting room for three hours past his appointment time and then they began to close up shop. I was out of diapers and bottles when they admitted they had forgot about us completely! My husband came to bring diaper and provisions/water for me. She did not know what PHPV was and was flustered and perplexed and we luckily ended up getting treatment instead with. Wonderful pediatric Ophthalmologist in Honolulu instead. read more

Went in for a routine eye exam. Was told I had cataracts that had to be removed (don't believe it now). She said she could implant the regular lenses that ins pays for or she could implant a MULTI-VISION lens which my ins would not cover, It would cost $5000. She did a very hard sell on these lenses stating she had done many many of them and that I would never have to wear reading glasses again. (That's true because reading glasses do not help my vision in any way.} Against my gut feeling I went ahead with the $5000 lenses. The day I woke up from the surgery I couldn't see anything clearly. She said she could fix the problem with more laser surgery and when that didn't work she did an actual Lasik procedure. That was 3 years ago. Today I still cannot see clearly. Everything is slightly blurry and double. I can't read a book or any kind of label without a strong magnifying glass. The doctor I am currently seeing believes the lens is implanted in the wrong position, something Dr. Senft never even addressed. I can't believe she still has a license to practice. If you do go to her and are told you need any kind of surgery, GET A SECOND OPINION. read more

Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Susan Senft who went way above and beyond to save our vacation! During our trip to the big island, my wife started seeing a flurry of "floaters" which is a warning sign for possible retina issues. She called her optometrist back home who immediately sent us to the ER. They didn't have an ophthalmologist on call, but thankfully put us in touch with Dr Senft. It was Saturday during her day off but she immediately agreed to meet us at her office to conduct an impromptu examination. I mean who does that anymore? She was very meticulous and explained things in lay persons terms that we could easily understand. Best of all, she confirmed the problem didn't require immediate attention and that we could resume our vacation without worry. Whew, what a HUGE relief! Bottom line, if she didn't offer to do the exam right then and there, we would've been forced to take the next flight out to Oahu to see a specialist, effectively putting an end to our vacation before it even started. So yes, Dr. Senft literally saved our vacation and for that we are very grateful. No words can properly capture the gratitude and appreciation my husband and I share for Dr Susan Senft. She is a compassionate and committed ophthalmololoist/surgeon who has proven over the years to be a self-sacrificing humanitarian who has not only served Kona, but many other countries in the world when she has traveled to give her surgical services to those in impoverished parts of the globe. Interestingly, she has cared for three generations of my family. It was not until recently that my husband and I had a personal need for her help. One morning my husband awoke with a throbbing headache and an eye that was nearly swollen shut. The pain was excruciating. In need of immediate care, Dr. Susan Senft accommodated us and was able to make an appropriate diagnosis to do immediate laser surgery and give my husband the relief needed. She monitored him for the remainder of the week and into the weekend, coming in on her days off. To say we are grateful is an understatement. Dr. Senft saved our vacation! This is our first visit to the Big Island and even the concierge at our resort admitted that good doctors (especially specialists) can be extremely hard to come by as many apparently return to the mainland in time. We called and emailed around to a number of internet search results and Dr. Senft of Island Eye Care was the first (and only) to respond. She was extremely pleasant on the phone and offered that she would be happy to head in to her office (at a time when it was usually closed) to take care of us. I will never go back there.. you waste hours waiting to see her and she rushes and makes or gives bad examinations.. on my very first visit she said I had glaucoma but after I learned that some people are born with holes in the back of their eye and it needs to be measured and if it enlarges than you can say that patient has glaucoma. Dr Susan Senft did an exam of my eyes and told me I needed surgery. I went to another ophthalmologist for a second oppinion and I DID NOT NEED SURGERY. Beware if she says you need surgery. She and her staff were lovely, but I think she is NOT practicing good medicine and is doing laser surgeries for financial gain. Hope Rice, MD I was inappropriately diagnosed with narrow angles, making me at risk for Narrow Angle Glaucoma. She scheduled me to do a laser surgery/iridotomy the following day. Two ophthalmologists later confirmed that I do NOT have narrow angles and DID NOT NEED LASER SURGERY. Luckily I canceled the laser surgery after I saw another ophthalmologist. read more

My husband and myself feel so lucky to have such a well experienced and skilled Ophthalmologist with her compassionate and committed manner. My husband (George) had Cataract surgery on his both eyes with Multifocal lens (December, 2017). The result are well beyond his expectations. All colors are as vivid as high-definition television. He can read newspapers, books, and do his crossword puzzles without the need of eyeglasses. His eyes are still sensitive toward to the sun, but it will take some more time to adjust. I believe Dr. Senft is very knowledgeable and great at what she does. My only problem is the way they do their scheduling of appointments. I had an appointment made 3 months ago to come in at 2pm. I waited till 4pm before I told the receptionist I was cancelling my appointment because of the long wait. There were people there waiting for 4 hours and still waiting. I've been there 5 times, and Everytime had to wait at least 2 hours?! If I had a choice I would not go back. read more

Dr Senft was a heaven-sent angel who saved our vacation. On our very first day in Hawaii(Friday), my wife had a small sliver of debris blow into her eye causing a cornea abrasion and excruciating pain. We went to the Kona hospital ER and they could not find the problem and referred us to Dr Senft on Monday. My wife could barely open her eye and was confined to our Airbnb room with all the lights off because all weekend it irritated her eye. Dr Senft saw us a mere 1.5 hours after calling the office Monday morning. Dr Senft was able to flip my wife's eyelid back, find the cause of the problem, and remove the debris. She was also thorough enough to discover another condition that my wife ended up having that if we didn't know about could have been the cause for some blindness later on in life. I'm on vacation for my birthday and Mother's Day, I woke up with my eyes shut with green crusty stuff :( swollen pain ugh go to urgent care got an ointment 3 days later and I'm here on the big island on Saturday miserable the day before mothers calling different dr offices for eye specialist since the meds didn't work from the urgent care. My father wanted to write a testimony about his experiences with Dr. Senft, but he didn't have a yelp account. So, below is his personal review from his experience with her. I am a fortunate eye patient because Dr. Senft helped save my only vision in my left eye. In 1998, I lost my right eye due to an aggressive eye infection following a cataract operation done by another clinic. For many years after that operation, I could only rely on my left eye to see. Eventually however, my left eye slowly developed into a fully ripened cataract whereby my vision severely diminished. I had become a high risk eye patient for cataract surgery due to my previous infection and eye removal. I bounced through referrals till Dr. Senft was willing to take me as a patient. Dr. Senft was very understanding and I saw that she demonstrated care and compassion for her patients. She was extensively experienced in handling extreme eye infections. She was meticulous during the entire procedure and took the time to explain the preoperative preparation, cataract surgery and final post operative preparation. In September 2011, she performed a successful operation and I could see again. Today, I still have routine check-ups at Dr. Senft's office and I continue to receive quality optical care. My vision remains 20/20. I am so grateful to Dr. Senft for giving me the ability to see again. I would highly recommend her to anyone who needs medical eye care. David T read more

There are 3 big problems with Dr. Senft. 1. She doesn't give you enough information to make a decision nor does she discuss with you what's best for YOU. She pushed a multi-focal lens for my cataract surgery on one eye. After doing it - and it cost me $2000 out of pocket - my vision never cleared in that eye, the glare and haloes were worse making night driving impossible - I saw better with simple corrective lenses. And I now had dry eye. After going to another doctor, they told me that dry eye is common after cataract surgery. They also told me that multi-focal lenses refract light differently than regular lenses, so that may be why my brain was having trouble dealing with two different kinds of lenses in each eye. Usually, a good doc will make sure they know what your lifestyle is and what kind of lens is best (do you do a lot of night driving? Do you do a lot of computer work? etc.) That discussion didn't happen with Dr. Senft. 2. She doesn't listen. When I said I couldn't see well after surgery and wanted a new prescription for glasses, she said I didn't need it. (The second doc wrote me one, and that helped.) Because the blur was unchanged after 3 months, she used a laser to punch a hole in the capsule holding the lens to let more light in. Sitting in front of her before that procedure, I asked why that would solve the problem, since stuff growing on the capsule usually takes years or at least months to accumulate. She said "every eye is different." The surgery did NOT make any difference. And with the second doctor, I found out that after this capsulotomy, I did not have the option of removing the mutli-focal lens. I was stuck with it. She has so many patients that she has no time to listen to your concerns. 3. She always recommends the most expensive options. She wanted me to do the multi-focal lenses in both eyes, even though the second eye was not ready. Why? She leases laser equipment, and if she didn't use it more, the company might recall it. She told me this. I was being asked to spend thousands of dollars to help her keep her equipment! In terms of dry eye, instead of first recommending just drops - the least expensive option first - she wanted me to do a procedure that costs $1700 dollars out of pocket, the most expensive option. I asked how long the benefit would last. She said, "one or two years." Who has money like that to spend every year?! I'm willing to spend on my eyes which is why I went with the multi-focal lens, reasoning that it is the lens of the future and one of the most important things in life is vision - but I'm not in a position to throw money away, being retire on fixed income. There is also another problem and that is wait time. Her office is poorly managed - it's a joke among people in the waiting room that you will wait at least one to two hours from your appointment and sometimes much longer. Technically, she's excellent, and she has great staff - Ava is terrific and knowledgable, Ben is kind and easy to work with. But in sum, I will not be going back for cataract surgery on my second eye! read more

The Dr. is in my opinion very good however, there is a problem with the office. I was told after the initial exam I will be called to schedule a procedure. The following week no call so I called the office and they said it was too soon and have your procedure scheduled and I will be called. The following week I called (Tue. morning when they opened) and they said they would look into when I will be scheduled and call me back. I have yet to receive a call 12:28pm. In the meantime I am holding off other appointments on the days she schedules office procedures thinking that I may get a call. read more

I had a horrbile experience. I was in the office for some fillers. I waited for probably 3 hours Dr Senft even the front doors were locked when I tried to leave. She was on the phone & more interested in training someone than paying attention to me. I was black & blue for 2 weeks and when the swelling went down, you couldn't tell I had anything done. She charged me 1197.90 to go through this misery with no results!!! Please ladies don't use her for anything, there are other Drs. in town. read more

WE there for surgery to remove my cataracts, which was done. She also puched for laser treatment to address an astigmatism issue, which I got suckered into, when she said it would make everything "much better". After the surgeries My vision initially was great!! Then it began to slip. QUICKLY. The eye pressures went through the roof 50 at one point and there was no sense of urgency on her part. She told me that the problem was scarring and that could removed by laser. She did that. My eyesight ket sliding. WEnt back and got there for a 10 A.M. appt, and was taken in promptly at 11:30, then I was told that she wasn't there yet and that my wait could be as mush as another 1 1/2 hrs. I left. She is never on time...EVER. the post op care is essentially nonexistent. I needed a refil on a prescription and called and was told they would be calling it in immediately. 5 calls into the office later I gave up. Then I went back for another issue. She told me that she was going to prescribe drops for pressure. She never did. The care is minimal at best. The waits are for ever and she pushes CASH ONLY procedures very strongly. After surgery my eyesight was 20/100 L and 20/60 R. Currently the Left is BLACK and the Right is less than 20/200. Stay away from this place, I really wish that I had. She only cares about the money not the patient!! read more

My wife had an eye infection and was told by the receptionist she would be seen on Friday but then told she would have to wait until Monday afternoon. When we arrived early the small office was packed with patients. After a two and one half hours she was called back to be examined by a tech. Then we were escorted to the "TV Room" to wait some more. This TV room, about the size of a closet had 6 people crammed into chairs watching CNN News. FINALLY, we got to see Dr. Susan who took 5 minutes to prescribe some eye medicine. Before leaving Dr. Susan suggested my wife needed a laser procedure, which was NOT necessary. Why so many people and such a long wait for a MD (NOT an opthomologist )?? We were being processed like a herd of cattle, one after the other as we were being held captive by the doctors office. Why all this? Money, money, money for the nice doctor. Keep lining them up and billing the insurance doctor you will get RICH soon, if not already. May the karma of justice return to the money hungry doctor and give her some medicine she deserves. read more

Dr. Susan Senft performed eye surgery on my family member who bitterly complained after I found her with her expertise in eye surgery on the Big Island of Hawaii. Previously this elderly family member had gone to Honolulu, Hi last time so I was HAPPY to have found her FBI yet this family member is a skeptic about ALL doctors. Dr. Senft performed a successful eye surgery my family member is still driving today in his high 80's taking our dog Alejandro for walks so she's AMAZING! I didn't have the pleasure of meeting her in person tho' I did get to meet her professional staff. Taking care of my patient (the family member I mean) wasn't easy as he complained yet the final result it is frustrating after surgery with drops not able to see properly so I took him to his follow-up appts with her. One incredible visit the very next day we even went to his dismay to Teshima's to have breakfast (too far he said as I drove him) then he played with an over sized poodle at Miranda's Pet Store for 45 minutes! That' HOW good he felt the very next day! Then going into Costco the Optical place my family member switched his eye drops from the ones Dr. Senft gave him after surgery. I was deeply alarmed I called Dr. Senft's office who relayed the message to the proper person who then called my family member telling him NOT to STOP taking the eye drops he needed after surgery she prescribed otherwise he would go BLIND. He now has a different eye doctor for his eye exams the same one I told him from three years tho' he didn't listen to me it was his primary doctor that gave him the same eye doctor so It's All Good! Vacationing on the island and developed vision problems on sunday evening. I went to the ER and they called Dr. Senft to see if she could see me the following day. Instead she met me at her office THAT NIGHT and did a complete exam. She diagnosed me with a retinal tear, contacted a retinal specialist in Honolulu and facilitated my transfer to Honolulu for urgent surgery. I am from California and had been on vacation in Kona when I experienced an eye infection. After wearing my contacts in the stem room at my hotel, I started to experience left eye discomfort. I was seeing an unusual white spot on the lower cornea. While I noticed it did not get better the next day, I realized it was more serious than I thought. So because it was a Saturday, Walmart was the only place open to examine my eye. I was then referred to Dr. Senft who took me in the office only minutes later. First of all she treats her patients like they are her own family. I have never met a more enjoyable and caring doctor than Dr. Senft. For her to exam my eye on a Saturday in Kona, HI when I had no other option is unheard of. I really don't know what would have happened if she was not available or did not see patients on a Saturday. She examined my eye on Saturday and cut out the white spot and then prescribed me antibiotic eye drops which helped my infection enormously. She is such an amazing person and extremely professional. I then saw her again on Sunday and my eye had improved significantly. I went back to see her again Monday and my eye was much better. Dr. Senft is not only a highly experienced ophthalmologist, she is a caring person who finds joy from helping others. She believes it is her responsibility to treat people when they are in need of help and have nowhere else to go. This sort of thing can happen to anyone with misuse of eye contacts and I can't express enough how grateful I am for her help. Dr. Susan Senft is a remarkable practitioner. She has cared for the eyes of 3 generations of my family, nearly 20+ cousins, nieces, nephews, uncles and aunts, and countless friends. Her service to all of us and our community at large is beyond words. No amount of praise can adequately express the gratitude I have towards her and the work she has done for over 25 years as an ophthalmologist/surgeon. As life takes crazy turns, my husband woke up one morning with a violent headache, his right eye was throbbing and blazing red, nearly swollen shut. We needed to get help fast!!! Dr. Senft's office was courteous and efficient in immediately getting us scheduled to come in and be treated. Yes, her office is always very full of people, but that is because she is worth waiting for. They have a compassionate policy of seeing everyone and getting everyone help, that's how they have always operated. We were extended every courtesy and my husband was given a multitude of tests and an extensive consultation by doctor. She is a very calm and caring person who takes the time to explain everything in great detail and answers all your questions. During this process, it was discovered that my husband had developed a large tumor that had grown from the back of the eye, obstructing all the vision in that eye. Further, it was evident we would need to be handled expeditiously by oncologists and get further scans to determine whether the cancer had spread. Dr. Senft came in on her days off and stayed late in the evening to do additional testing and do all the groundwork for a referral to a renown institute on the mainland that deals with these large eye tumors. This type of situation is life threatening and I am eternally grateful to Dr. Senft for her quick and proactive decisions. I have always recommended her over the years and now have direct personal experience that I can speak to. If you need a doctor that is easy to speak with, is caring and listening to your needs, on top of being an extraordinary professional in her field, this is your best choice. read more

I will never go back to this women. I picked her because of the reviews I read on here. I have really good eye sight and only needed to update my reading glasses because my dog had decided to use them as a chew toy. During the visit I thought it was strange that she was dilating my eyes. I had never had anyone do this to me when just getting a prescription, but I made the mistake of not asking questions. After the visit I picked out my new glasses and asked if they could put lens in my old glasses. By the end of the visit I had paid over $200 to the company and was told my insurance would take care of the rest. After my visit, I started to talking to my co-workers about my experience and was told by SEVERAL people about the damages Dr Senft has done to their eyes. One friend of mine had to fly to Oahu for surgery to fix what Dr Senft had done. She almost went blind because of this Doctor. I decided to do some research and found out that if you are seeing your eye doctor solely to get a prescription, dilation induces potential changes to a prescription that aren't present in the normal state of the eye when the iris/pupil is not dilated. When I got my glasses back I felt like the prescription was wrong and makes my eye sight worse, I should be able to wear them when driving and was told by Senft to wear them all the time. But if I wear them driving I find it hard to read street signs, seems wrong, right? Now seven months have gone by and I am now getting a bill for another $150. Now I know she doesn't dilate for your good, she dilates so that she can over charge you and pay for her exotic vacations. I was also charged for "Standard" frame when I had brought in my own frames in. So feel free to use her but keep in mind that a pair of glasses, an eye exam, and lens will cost you over $400 on top of what your insurance will cover and that's not counting the cost you'll pay to the doctor that has to fix the problems Dr Senft creating. read more

i normally go to costco optical but they were full when it came time for my annual prescription renewal. first time experience: my appointment was at 1030am and i wasn't actually seen by the doctor herself until 1230pm-100pm. however, there was a nice philipino lady who did my eye exam. some procedures i never had before. i had never had my eyes dilated before, which i wish they took the time in the two and half hours i was there, explaining to me what it was and how it affected my sight because i drove myself and had difficulty navigating on the road. when doctor seen me, she just pushed a $10,000 surgery. i was instructed to get temporary shaders from the front desk. the salesman in the frames center was no help when i asked told him, "excuse me, they dilated my eyes and told me i could find temporary shaders up here?" he barely acknowledged me and pointed to a bowl on the counter, "you mean those." overall, i felt like i was treat like a minority. after my exam they never followed up with the test they ran on my tears or contact lenses. ever since my exam my eyes have been extra dry, extra itchy, and have been producing extra discharge. i would never recommend this place or doctor to anyone. read more
