Incredible experience celebrating my parent's 40th wedding anniversary. Call ahead to make reservations - we sat at the private table not at the chef counter. The space was clean and had a more upscale feel. Did the 19-course omakase and each bite was incredible. The fish is fresh from Japan, and you can see and feel the attention to detail. My parents do not like "fancy" experiences (they've dined at 3 Michelins but prefer a more laid back experience), and this place struck the right balance. It's upscale but also familiar. Favorite bite was the chutoro and second favorite was the chawanmushi :) That chilled clam soup was something else - I wish I could have a whole bowl of that! Definitely make an effort to check them out!

I took my son and his wife to Sushi Aki for my DIL's belated birthday and it was a nice experience. The restaurant is small so we passed it while walking looking for it. Enter from the parking lot side and there is a sign that is visible but we didn't see it the first time. It's a nice cozy place to have dinner. The fish is flown in daily from Japan. We shared our meals ordering various dishes. The sashimi plate was kinda small and the slices were a bit thin. The sushi plate, were ordered 2, was tasty but the sushi was on the small side. Seemed to be a perfect size to plop in your mouth but I prefer bigger pieces of seafood on my sushi. The various skewers of Yakitori were delicious as were the tempura, definitely order these. We finished with dessert. Panacotta for my son and his wife and matcha creme brûlée for me and my date. Loved the creme brûlée. I like Japanese dessert because it is never too sweet. Great experience. Be prepared that the sashimi and sushi are on the smaller size.

What a wonderful gem. If you're in Honolulu and love, quality sushi, you have to come to Aki. First off it is an intimate setting where you get to enjoy the chef making individual pieces directly in front of you, so it is perfect for those that enjoy personal attention with their omakase meal. Our Omakasa menu was 21 courses and every course was incredible. The course is definitely more than what most other places offer, so you will not only be satisfied, but the cadence and the combination is so well done that you will enjoy the changing of flavors and texture with each course. Many of the ingredients are shipped in from Japan so we were able to taste various wonderful dishes typically available in Japan. From the fish to the tempura, and even to the soup, I could not find a single fault for each course that carefully seasoned where you don't need anything additional and each bite felt perfect. Talk about quality, authentic, tasty and elegant. 100% my stop for every time I'm in Honolulu. Thank you for a wonderful evening, chef!!!

1st time for everything, the omakase experience. Nice ambience, with friendly service, and a talented chef! Was very skeptical as I like to eat what I want to eat. However, every dish was amazingly delicious and well prepared! Things I would never eat, I ate it! Some pics had no chance to post.

Great service and excellent omakase. Small intimate setting with only 6 seats ay sushi counter with a small private room on the side. Loved the Hokkaido uni, abalone, Chawamushi and ikura. Everything was fresh. Good sake and beer selection. 18 plus courses, more than enough. Delicious light dessert. Omakase changes every month. Will definitely return.

Sushi Aki is a quaint little sushi restaurant tucked away in a plaza in Honolulu. While it might be a bit challenging to find due to the lack of signage, the intimate and cozy atmosphere inside makes it well worth the search. They offer 2 omakase options - 19-piece omakase and 21-piece omakase. I opted for the 19-piece omakase, which offered a delightful variety of fresh and high-quality sushi. The pace was quite fast, which worked perfectly for me as I had a flight to catch. One unique aspect of dining experience at Sushi Aki is that not everyone in your group is required to participate in their omakase experience. If someone in your group wants to order from their a la carte menu then that is totally fine too. My 19-piece omakase included- 1. Bluefin tuna and rock bream sashimi 2. Striped Jack sushi 3. Seared bonito 4. Flounder sushi 5. Salmon roe 6. Chilled corn soup 7. Rolled egg omlete 8. Seared scallop 9. Steamed egg with snor crab and shitake 10. Saltwater Eel and vegetable tempura 11. Seared vinegar cured Mackerel 12. Black sea bream 13. Abalone in liver sauce 14. Chutoro 15. Sea Eel 16. Tuna skinny roll 17. Yellowtail 18. Seaweed miso soup 19. Dessert The highlights for me were the sea eel, melt-in-your-mouth chutoro, mackerel, black sea bream, scallop, and the delicious chilled corn soup. The 2 courses that fell short were the dessert and the abalone in liver sauce. The dessert was basically tangerine with tasteless jelly. And the abalone was a bit chewy. Overall the dining experience was great. The intimate setting allowed for interactions with other diners, adding to the charm of the restaurant. If you're looking for a good sushi experience in Honolulu, Sushi Aki is definitely worth a visit.

First of all I want to congratulate Sushi Aki on 1 year of business in Kaimuki! This small door is right when you walk in to the unassuming location in the parking lot. You walk in and there should be a door right to your left. Please do not confuse Restaurant Aki with Sushi Aki. Restaurant Aki is the regular Izakaya/Yakitori location, and Sushi Aki is a separate entity as the sister restaurant. The experience was top notch and at a 19-course omakase with a bonus sushi at the end which would actually equate to a 20-course omakase for $135 this is an extremely good deal. The sushi chef was extremely skilled and I am always extremely impressed at the dedication and skill that these chefs possess in making everything perfect. When molding the rice to wrapping it, and even the way the fish is cut to accentuate the taste of the fish it is all choreographed perfectly. The waitress was also extremely attentive and helpful in making our experience great. Overall an amazing experience. I definitely would want to go again with my family or friends. Standouts for me were the chawanmushi which is probably the best one I've ever had. Limited ingredients in the mixture really allowed for the flavors to be expressed even more in the dish. The chutoro is and HAS ALWAYS been my all-time favorite so you already know I loved it. The anago (eel) was melt-in-your mouth, and the chef did an amazing job of prepping certain seafood that I usually am not crazy about, yet everything tasted so good I have no complaints. LOL! The ambiance was exclusive. Counter seating only with a small private room in the corner. Albeit a little bit cramped once more people started trickling in, but a great experience to sit right in front of the chef and watch him do his thing. I hope Sushi Aki stays for a long long time forever because I will be dreaming of this omakase meal forever. LOL

Amazing omakase experience. Definitely going back!! Felt like we were in Japan again and everything was so delicious. Excellent service and intimate ambiance with regulars.

In fact I will give 4.5: A very small intimate sushi restaurant (had 7 seats at the counter plus one small room). We had 21 omakase course (but you can get your choice of bonus sushi so 22 in total) Sushi, Shirumono, tempura, and abalone were all good. I deducted 0.5 for Sazae because it was a bit salty by dipped soy sauce too long plus a waitress served tremendously hot tea so that I couldn't hold a cup. Overall it was a nice memorable omakase course, Mahalo

my boyfriend took me here on my first omakase experience on the island and would say, ambiance, service and quality was 10/10. we've had omakase in Japan and would say this comes close. we ate through it quick but still enjoyed every. single. bite. seared items seemed to make it to my top favorites of the 19 piece course we've had but all items were on par with my taste palette.

There is walk-ins but I wouldn't risk it The food was incredibly fresh. As it goes without saying, when you're in Hawaii you're as close to eating the freshest seafood as you can without being in Japan. We both ended up getting their Signature Negitoro Bowl but the Tokujo version which has Salmon Roe + Snow Crab + Uni and added a fresh Yolk Soy Sauce. Because why not have the Lamborghini of Negitoro bowls while you're visiting here. Along with that I ended up with a half sized udon miso soup and my wife a crab miso soup. As you can see in the pictures the food came out looking just like it did on the menu, no false advertising there. The egg soy sauce was a perfect creaminess that complimented the saltiness of the Uni and Salmon Roe. Once you mix everything together there's even added house made soy sauce on the side of your want more saltiness back but add some yuzu ginger with each bite and you get that perfect blend of flavor. There's fish was insanely fresh and had zero fishy smell or taste. The rice underneath was cooked well and the side squares of nori was perfect to make our own hand rolls. There's no alcohol served but they allow you walk 15 steps outside to the nearby convenience store where they have the cutest little dog and bring in your own beer or sake. There's miso soup was good and warms you up, but will say the corner we sat on had the AC blasting (which we're not complaining) but it did cool down our soups a little faster than we could enjoy so in the end my wife's crab miso did get a little salty. But overall the food was amazing, service was friendly and vibes were warm. Absolutely will come back the next time we're in Oahu.

I had HJE on my radar for a while and was finally able to stop in for lunch in the first week of July 2026. The restaurant is located in the same shopping plaza as the Kaimuki Times. In fact, it's on the ground floor next to Times. It's tucked behind some large concrete walls next to the parking lot, but just keep your eyes open and you should be able to find it. I ordered the Fish Lovers bento and a Cheeseburger musubi, both with the mulitgrain rice. The Fish Lovers bento was PACKED with offerings, including chikuwa, ahi katsu, shrimp tempura, miso butterfish, grilled saba (?), and grilled salmon, plus an assortment of wonderful side dishes. The Cheeseburger musubi included a beef patty topped with cheese, plus multigrain rice all wrapped in nori. I was a big fan of both my choices, and I would definitely order them again!

I was so upset with myself, because I wanted to go here weeks ago when I found it by accident on Instagram, lol. Next time I will not forget. So the bento that was left was the chicken Kara'age. I wasn't expecting much since it was the last meal available. I decided to try it after organizing my clothing in my closet. Honestly I wasn't hungry, but it was approaching 5pm which was very late for me, lol. I nuked it a little to get it warm removing all the cold items out first then ate the side dishes first I thought mmm, not bad. But then came the chicken and I was mesmerized by the first bite. I thought okay take a few more bites then judge it. So I thought maybe I was starving, so I dipped it into the sauce it came with and my mouth started to have a party inside! The dip reminds me of Japan and the red rice is exactly how my Okinawan mom used to make it. Well, I'm sold and if this is the least wanted plate of the entire day I can't even imagine how spectacular the others must taste. The lady at the register was so kind and apologized several times for being sold out. I totally understand but she definitely meant the apology I can tell. Reminds me of Japan again and she was wearing a mask which is a Japanese custom these days. There is a little table outside for seating of three I think. This place is small but don't be fooled, I heard and seen the massive line this awesome eatery can get. Go early and the wait will definitely be worth it.

Overall a good experience. Good variety for lunch. Can't wait to dine in later...

Once inside, you are warmly greeted. It's a little dim inside during the day. No paper menus; you need to scan a QR code to see what you want to order. Our group ordered the teishoku set which came with the main entree, rice, oxtail broth, and 2 appetizers (we opted for tofu and eggplant). We opted for the Aburi flank steak which was very very tasty and the Aburi chicken. The chicken was a touch on the salty side, but it came with a spicy dipping sauce which was phenomenal! All the meats had the delicious smoky flavor from the grill. The oxtail broth was kinda bland. We also ordered the oxtail ramen which was also a hit. Finished off dinner with ice cream + mochi. The mochi is also grilled but know that it's not sweet mochi.

Since it was late, we noticed the back of house staff help the front. Everyone was so friendly and food comes out fast. The only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is because the food was a bit too flavorful - we all agreed that everything was slightly salty. I could also say portion of some items may not match price, but I understand inflation is increasing at an alarming rate. So I'll leave money out of this. Crushed cucumbers were interesting. We couldn't decide if eating it with chopsticks or spoon was better. With chopsticks, you might not get enough sauce. But you could taste the layers of flavor. With a spoon, you get too much saltiness. The spice hits at the end. The tako karaage were a little too chewy for us. Beef tongue was so tender. A definite must order. I dont think it needs rice though. We also ordered the late night nikumiso but it didn't come with an egg, which the menu said it should. We tried handful more items but we'll be back to try the oxtail items, as it sounds like that's their specialties, but takes extra time to prepare.

You can call in or text, 8087720146, your order. I don't know of any app they might be affiliated with...or any online option. Unfortunately, they were sold out of the Churry and may offer it Friday. Their IG post stated availability only this Thursday and Friday. A bit disappointing but mitigated by the excellent katsu bento. The only quibble: they don't provide enough sauce. The thinky layered pork - mille-feuille style - was tender and the panko crust crisp. I haven't been to Nana Ai Katsu in a while and had forgotten just how fantastic their tonkatsu is...damn.

At this price point, it couldn't be any better. We also ordered the Takoyaki and that was pretty good too, just a little too much batter for my preference but that's just me. Staying at this price point is well worth the value of the food because you will basically serve yourself. Don't get me wrong, the lady who greeted us and took our order was super friendly and energetic, but staying at this price makes sense because not only do you seat yourself which is a no biggie, but we had to ask for water when we realized we weren't being served and had to get napkins. Only chopsticks are on the table you sit at. We sat near the little koi bucket and as the sign says, the koi really do greet you which was super cute. Respect the koi should you choose to sit there lol. Definitely multiple returns for me. Oh, and they do close at 2p so make sure to at least get there by 1p if you would like to take your time to enjoy the deliciousness. But check their hours because they have different times on certain days.
