Mixed bowl with crab miso soup and extra nori and salad and shoyu egg on da side
    Joann Y.

SO GOOD!! Walking into Totoya feels like stepping into a little corner of Japan. The food is fantastic, the service is warm and welcoming, and the entire experience feels authentic. The space is small, so there can be a wait, but don't let that discourage you. The restaurant is mostly bar seating, and people tend to order, eat, and head out, so the turnover is surprisingly quick. It's not really a spot for large groups, but that's part of its charm. One thing you absolutely have to order is the salad. I know it sounds strange to get excited about shredded cabbage, but it's actually the yuzu dressing that is incredible. It strikes the perfect balance of sweet, savory, and citrusy flavors in a way that I've never had anywhere else. Unfortunately, it's homemade. And I'm still thinking about it. Let's not skip over the main attraction - the bowls! Every bowl I've tried is delicious, but you need to get the negitoro with the shoyu egg so you can mix it altogether and make little hand rolls with the nori. Perfection!

It truly feels like an off island experience where we step into Japan for the meal! Honestly every bowl is delicious.. for this meal I got the Fukuju bowl with seaweed miso soup! Their yuzu infused ginger really elevates the meal! Hands down one of my go to places to bring people when they visit O'ahu!

YUM! Best bowl I had all week on my vacay. Fresh ingredients which blended so deliciously. I wasn't too hungry to start but I ate the entire bowl. The miso soup was slightly too salty. Server was pleasant and explained things. Small space with sushi bar counters only which I enjoy ed watching them make bowls after bowls.

Totoya is a Japanese sushi chain and so happy to see it now in Hawaii, with multiple locations in Aiea, Kaimuki, and Piikoi. We went to the Kaimuki location to see what the hype was about. I had their signature negitoro matsu bowl and it was absolutely divine! I was always hesitant to eat negitoro because of the negi or green onions in the name, but it tasted like a finer, soft ahi paste with ikura and uni. Delicious, although can be pricy at $30+ per entree. Highly recommend for authentic, negitoro experience.

Reminds me of Japan!! Small little restaurant with bar seating. Menu is super simple and easy to follow and staff is very helpful if you have questions. Be prepared to wait or come early if you want to beat the line! Second time dining here and I can't complain! Every bowl is so good and the fish literally melts in your mouth.

WOW, I love negitoro bowls now. First time trying one of these and also Totoya, and it was impressive. It felt like l went back to Japan again. It's only a counter seating style type and can fit around 15-20 people. But, it's very clean and organized. You can also see the workers making your dish! The customer service was great, they're very attentive and kind. I got the tame bowl and added a shoyu egg (you need to add it, it made the flavor so much more intense!) When I first ate it, it was like a punch of flavor. It was filled with umami as the salmon roe pops in your mouth. Every bowl order also comes with a miso soup! They have a 7 step guide on how to best eat the bowl and the sides, I approve! So good :)

Amazing amazing amazing! Service was amazing and everything ran so smoothly. The ambiance is calm, cozy, and intimate as you're sitting at the chef's bar. The food -- amazing. The soup pairing just makes sense and this is such a comforting meal for me since I LOVE sushi and miss Japan.

Fresh fish at it's finest! Totoya offers fresh fish on rice in multiple ways! Menu posted outside for quick ordering process. Once you enter server is super friendly and will explain menu items, soup options, and offer suggestions if your unsure about what to order. Casual dining with seating around the chef, stop by for a Japanese dish in Kaimuki Town.

I came here with a party of five right at 11 AM on a weekday and no wait. I got the Tokujo and my husband got the Fukuju. We parked in a lot across the street. I devoured my entire bowl- rice and all. I got the shoyu egg sauce and the miso soup it comes with is incredible. My mother in law was with us and said the price was not bad for how much fish but not the same as Japan where she tried. For me, it was fantastic- fresh and flavorful. They care about quality of service and dining experience. I definitely want to come back here to get the Tokujo bowl again!

The negitoro bowls are amazing. The fish tastes fresh and even the miso soup is really good. You can tell they take pride in their bowls. I upgraded to the daily special salmon miso and it was 100 % worth it. They did not skimp. There were big chunks of salmon throughout. I like to add the egg yolk with shoyu because it melts into the bowl and gives everything this rich, creamy vibe. I'm also an ikura girl forever, so I added extra and no regrets. The pop and saltiness in each bite make it soo good. Service is super fast once you order, which I appreciate. The only downside is you have to wait outside in line and they do not take reservations, so peak hours can test your patience. But honestly... I still keep coming back. Fresh fish therapy is real.

I'm seriously drooling again just writing this review. Another amazing find thanks to Feed Mei Mei on YouTube! Dining at Totoya truly makes you feel like you've been transported back to Japan. We came for an early lunch and were lucky to grab the last couple of seats. They only have about 12-14 spots total, so it fills up quickly. I ordered the Nagomi bowl, which came with salmon, scallop, uni, shrimp, tuna, negitoro, and roe. My husband got the negitoro bowl and added snow crab. We both upgraded to the salmon miso soup, and it was so comforting and flavorful, definitely worth it. Each bowl comes with a couple pieces of nori, but you can request more for a small additional charge. And trust me, two pieces are not enough!. Everything tasted incredibly fresh and delicious. I only wish we had more time in Oahu to come back again, but we'll absolutely be returning on our next trip.

I came around 12pm on a Wednesday and there were many open seats, though the restaurant is pretty small. There is only one guy making the bowls, so service is a tad slow. The tuna in the negitoro was fresh, but the portion sizes felt smaller than I thought they'd be. My boyfriend got the nagomi and the salmon, scallop, and shrimp it came with (in addition to the negitoro) weren't that fresh. I'm glad I got to try it, but I wouldn't wait over 30 minutes for this place.

If you really enjoy negitoro or kaisen don bowls then you'll be very satisfied with Totoya. Every time I go, I'm transported back to a restaurant in Japan. From the greeting at the door to the layout of the booth you sit at. The service is also on par with a Japanese restaurant -- fast and attentive. I have gone multiple times and every time the quality of the seafood used in the bowls are always top notch. While the portions may not look like a lot at first, you will definitely feel full after. I highly recommend getting the shoyu egg and extra nori to accompany your negitoro bowl. As far as the miso soup, you might want to consider getting the upgraded crab or shrimp miso soup.

Here is where the service did not impress me. The man who came to pour the broth did it so fast like he was in a rush, maybe he was, that droplets of the broth ricocheted onto my outfit went through and reached my thighs and actually hurt. I didn't react because... well... I didn't want to seem whiny. But that was not ok to be in such a rush that you cause harm or pain to a customer. 1/5 for the service, 3/5 for the dish Overall, wanted to love this place but it sadly disappointed. I didn't even bother to order the honey toast because everything else was overall just ok.

A standout was the pork with shiso and the gizzard which was a flavor bomb. Service was really good and the staff were nice. TL;DR Refined…read morebentos, musubis, and other Japanese dishes to go. ----- HIGOTO Japanese Eatery (HJE) is a solid option for takeaway Japanese food. I had HJE on my radar for a while and was finally able to stop in for lunch in the first week of July 2026. The restaurant is located in the same shopping plaza as the Kaimuki Times. In fact, it's on the ground floor next to Times. It's tucked behind some large concrete walls next to the parking lot, but just keep your eyes open and you should be able to find it. I ordered the Fish Lovers bento and a Cheeseburger musubi, both with the mulitgrain rice. The Fish Lovers bento was PACKED with offerings, including chikuwa, ahi katsu, shrimp tempura, miso butterfish, grilled saba (?), and grilled salmon, plus an assortment of wonderful side dishes. The Cheeseburger musubi included a beef patty topped with cheese, plus multigrain rice all wrapped in nori. I was a big fan of both my choices, and I would definitely order them again!

I was so upset with myself, because I wanted to go here weeks ago when I found it by accident on Instagram, lol. Next time I will not forget. So the bento that was left was the chicken Kara'age. I wasn't expecting much since it was the last meal available. I decided to try it after organizing my clothing in my closet. Honestly I wasn't hungry, but it was approaching 5pm which was very late for me, lol. I nuked it a little to get it warm removing all the cold items out first then ate the side dishes first I thought mmm, not bad. But then came the chicken and I was mesmerized by the first bite. I thought okay take a few more bites then judge it. So I thought maybe I was starving, so I dipped it into the sauce it came with and my mouth started to have a party inside! The dip reminds me of Japan and the red rice is exactly how my Okinawan mom used to make it. Well, I'm sold and if this is the least wanted plate of the entire day I can't even imagine how spectacular the others must taste. The lady at the register was so kind and apologized several times for being sold out. I totally understand but she definitely meant the apology I can tell. Reminds me of Japan again and she was wearing a mask which is a Japanese custom these days. There is a little table outside for seating of three I think. This place is small but don't be fooled, I heard and seen the massive line this awesome eatery can get. Go early and the wait will definitely be worth it.

3/15/26 Got treated for my birthday today by my wife "Arigatou!"…read more This was our third time here the 1st being their grand opening day 3 years ago Definitely not our last visit Chef n server are from Japan I wish I could speak Japanese but we had a great time trying to converse in broken Japanese n English Besides, we were the only ones there for almost an hour, so we had all their attention That made for another great experience! The 19 course omakase featured so many fresh seafoods, tempura, miso soup, dessert... Way better than alot of other omakases in town For your last morsel you get to pick anything you ate earlier n have it again Could have gone w Fatty Otoro or Popping Fresh Ikura but chose Ama Ebi Why? Because it was so Juicy Sweet n only in season now!

Incredible experience celebrating my parent's 40th wedding anniversary…read more Call ahead to make reservations - we sat at the private table not at the chef counter. The space was clean and had a more upscale feel. Did the 19-course omakase and each bite was incredible. The fish is fresh from Japan, and you can see and feel the attention to detail. My parents do not like "fancy" experiences (they've dined at 3 Michelins but prefer a more laid back experience), and this place struck the right balance. It's upscale but also familiar. Favorite bite was the chutoro and second favorite was the chawanmushi :) That chilled clam soup was something else - I wish I could have a whole bowl of that! Definitely make an effort to check them out!

Texted my takeaway request for a Kasane Tonkatsu Bemto and a small Churry. A what, you ask? Not a…read morecurry...not a churro...but a mix of Japanese curry and Japanese (?) chili. You can call in or text, 8087720146, your order. I don't know of any app they might be affiliated with...or any online option. Unfortunately, they were sold out of the Churry and may offer it Friday. Their IG post stated availability only this Thursday and Friday. A bit disappointing but mitigated by the excellent katsu bento. The only quibble: they don't provide enough sauce. The thinky layered pork - mille-feuille style - was tender and the panko crust crisp. I haven't been to Nana Ai Katsu in a while and had forgotten just how fantastic their tonkatsu is...damn.

I really want to like this place. When we got our food, I was surprised by the portion size…read more However, the katsu meat is really thin and the breading is thick. The sauce they use for the katsu is a familiar taste; they use bull-dog sauce. The dressing tastes like the dressing from Sams Club. I don't remember it being this way. Maybe they changed? I feel like Koromo and Tamafuji are better. I guess maybe this place is considered a take out spot? It's pretty much serve yourself water, bottle drinks only and order at the counter. The place is clean and wasn't busy. You're most likely going to have to get street parking or go to the paid parking area and walk around a little bit. If you want an OK katsu place, I guess this is the place.
