    Hamburger steak and Japanese sausage
    Joe W.

Finally got a chance to try Marujuu and now I understand why people keep talking about this place. Note: New Menu just dropped in June 2026 If you're into Japanese-style hamburger steak and sizzling platters, this spot delivers. The hamburger steak was juicy, flavorful, and came out piping hot on the iron plate. The sauces paired perfectly with the meat, and the portion size was satisfying without feeling overly heavy. What I really liked was the old-school Japan steakhouse vibe. Nothing overly fancy--just good comfort food done right. The sizzling sound when the plate hits the table instantly gets you hungry. Service was super friendly, food came out quickly, and the restaurant was clean and welcoming. Parking can be a little tight depending on when you go, but it's definitely worth the visit. It's a metered lot behind the building... it's actually really cheap parking but can get busy. If you're craving Japanese hamburg steak, steak, or a hearty meal that reminds you of Japan, Marujuu is absolutely worth checking out. I'll definitely be back to try more of the menu. Recommended: Hamburger Steak, Steak Combo, and anything served on the sizzling plate. Save room for extra rice because you're going to want it. Bonus- there is soft served dessert available and also a bonus chance to win a prize with a claw machine after your meal... you can even win some discounts or free food for next visit

I pleasantly enjoyed my time here, but was let down when it felt a bit warm while we had lunch. Maybe it was because we were seated in the corner booth, but it was only slightly uncomfortable. My friends and I got their Hamburg plate with no add ons- we chose their onion sauce. I loved the unlimited soup and rice service they had- it was self-serve which was fine. Burger was very juicy and plump! We shared their Nori Butter Cheese French fries- it was good! But I'd be fine without ordering it during my next visit.

Woohoo. We finally got a chance to dine at Marujuu. We've been wanting to try there since they opened but the lines were too long. We went at Lunchtime which according to our server was pretty mellow. Service was great from the front to the back. Very attentive and friendly. We tried the Hamburger Steak with both the Signature Onion Sauce and the Grated Daikon Ponzu sauce. Both were unique and delicious . The Hamburger Steaks were perfectly cooked and served piping hot on Sizzling platters. Their "Miso" soup was delicious it tasted like a Beef Onion Soup. They start you off with a cup of soup and a plate of rice, both you can refill yourself from the side bar. They have countertop and table service as well as delivery. We definitely have to go back to try what we saw on another couples table. The Onion Salad and the Nori Butter Cheese Fries . Highly recommended

Located where the old Chubbies and Koko Head Cafe used to be, with parking meters nearby. We got here around 530p on a Friday and was able to snag a booth seat without having any wait time. The place had countertop, booth and bench seats throughout the establishment, that quickly filled up. We were offered onion soup and water rather quickly and efficiently. We also didn't wait very long for our food to come through either (about 15 min). I was anticipating a much longer wait time, based on other reviews, though I believe we came here on a good day, they were turning tables in that 1 hour that we were there. And if you have good company, the time goes by quickly! As for the food, I ordered the signature onion sauce which was sweet, salty, and gritty all at the same time. I also tried my friend's Gorgonzola cheese sauce and it reminded me of the cheese in those cheese and cracker snack packs. Each hamburg comes with grilled vegetables (cabbage), pasta (spaghetti with marinara), and white rice. You can add toppings or larger portions for an additional cost. Also got an order of the original salt fries, no frills about it. Overall, the portion size for a regular was smaller than I had anticipated (went home and ate a snack afterwards). A friend of mine who went previously, mentioned the large portions just have more of the sides, rather than the meat itself. Ended the night with the self-service soft serve ice cream that has pineapple, vanilla or a mix of both. You can opt for a cup or cone. Just know that the machine pushes the product out very quickly, so if you don't have the technique down, you won't be able to stack the ice cream as high as you'd like it, without it toppling over. It was a decent experience, though I don't know if the product was worth the price for me.

Immediately when you enter, you're welcomed by the friendly faces of the staff, popular Japanese music, and the amazing smell of the kitchen. You're no longer in Kaimuki but somewhere in Japan at a family restaurant, pondering which of the delicious dishes you'll have for lunch or dinner. This restaurant has it all. The comfort and vibe and a little something for everyone. While I wouldn't call this a budget option, you definitely get what you pay for as you can get as much soup and rice as you'd like to have with your meal. The restaurant also has a list of beer, whiskey highballs, sours, or even a wine list if you choose to partake in a beverage. I decided on the Calpico sour and the Hamburg and Fried Oysters. The hamburger was juicy tender and you can tell that there has been a lot of care into the recipe. My oysters were also delicious and full of flavor, crispy on the outside and not too salty. The soup was also surprisingly delicious and was much heartier than I expected with a lot of substance to it. Definitely not your standard free soup that you get from other places. We went for a lunch date and made a reservation, although there was plenty of available seating when we went in so it may have not been completely needed. Plenty of parking available in the immediate area and nearby. Definitely looking forward to visiting again for the delicious food and the unique Japanese experience.

Dinner date with my son Marwynn at Marujuu Japanese was such a nice experience. We loved the cozy, casual vibe and the fun sizzling hot plates everything came out hot and comforting. The Japanese hamburger steak was juicy, flavorful, and perfect with rice. Simple, satisfying, and just the kind of comfort food we enjoy together. And great service :) Great spot for a relaxed mom & son dinner date. Thank you for free ice cream soft serve as well... We'll definitely come back again!

Located in Kaimuki, this is a casual quick-service type restaurant. The menu has lots to choose from so variety for everyone. There are even options for the kids. I like how the food came out on a sizzling platter! The hamburger patty was quite soft so I wasn't used to the texture. There is also a self-serve soft serve machine in the front of the restaurant as you enter. Overall, my family and I had a nice meal with good service. We will be back again! Happy Eating!

I wanted to check out this new Japanese hamburger place that replaced a previous hamburger place (Chubbies). Totally different experience! This hamburger is thicker and juicier. It's served with a variety of sauces and rice, spaghetti, and cooked cabbage. You also get a cup of soup to start your meal. I liked the Japanese hamburger. It was very tasty with actual pieces of meat in the ground beef. You also don't really need sauce but its nice to have on the side. All in all a good meal, very good and satisfying. The service was excellent, very responsive and attentive. The environment is very casual and comfortable. There were a lot of families in here the night we had dinner. Lots of parking in the paid lot or on the street. The metered parking is free after 6 pm and its always nice to walk around Kaimuki.

Parking: Kaimuki Municipal lot. Location: Across Kumon. Ambiance: open concept trendy diner Service: Outstanding Japanese service. Grateful that they accommodated three of us at 2:05 pm near closing. Recommend they stay open at bit later (3:00) on Sundays, since many places nearby close at 2:00 as well. Food: Hamburg Japanese style! Love the homemade burgers. I highly recommend giving this place a try. We will be back for happy hour.

The staff were friendly, and the food was delicious! Service: The staff were friendly, polite, and especially kind to our 3-year-old, making us feel very welcome. Food: Our 3-year-old enjoyed the hamburger patty, which is saying a lot since she doesn't usually eat hamburgers. Her absolute favorite, though, was the soft-serve ice cream. The adults loved the food as well, particularly the amazing sauces along with a cold glass of beer. Ambiance: Our 3-year-old also had a great time looking at the anime and manga-themed decor. Note: Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and we would definitely recommend this place.

Finally went to check out Marujuu in Kaimuki. The meter lot that is closest to marujuu was filled so we ended up parking across the street in the pay lot. The hamburger was super juicy and moist, we tried two different sauces since it comes on the side and quite a bit you can share. We got the onion and the ponzu, really liked the onion one! Each set comes with hot onion soup which is light and delicious! The chicken was also really good. Each plate comes with some noodles and veggies and a side of rice, if you want to get a salad it's an upgrade fee. They also give you free soft serve for filling out a review. The best part was the service! Their servers are awesome at explaining the menu, serving the food and checking on how you're liking the meal. The hot plates are made fresh so they ask for patience but it didn't take long to come out:

Feeling beefy... This is the place for that as not only they have hamburger steak but Wagyu Beef Steak as well, either way it's all create your own between six types of sauces and all comes with veggies, pasta and rice or salad but what you're able to do is bougie it up with additional toppings from sunny side egg, bacon to cheese. Walking in to the former Chubbie's location it's totally transformed with various anime posters covering the walls and a whole counter that takes majority the middle of the restaurant with booth surrounding it all is a unique layout. Dining with Nadine and Daniel as we walked in the staff all greeted us with "irasshai" and seated us was nice to see that they have pitchers of water and cups on each table just like in Japan is nice but after glancing at the menu we decided to get one of each different sauces to try (Signature Onion Sauce, Fresh Ginger Shoyu Garlic Glaze, Grated Daikon Ponzu). I expected to like the Grated Daikon Ponzu since that what I grew up which was still very good but liked the Signature on this visit but it's nice to have options and it all was good but my only disappointment is that it wasn't really hot and knew it all precooked and kept warm the veggies was cabbage and sprouts is a great combination was nice and filling, great presentation and loved the was you can make it your own. Thank you!

We had the saba, which I would say was good. 3/5 Beef curry, which was ok, but the rice was dry. It seemed a tad bit undercooked. Enough to notice and be disappointed by texture and lack of moisture, so I didn't really eat the rice. Curry and beef was quite ordinary. 2/5 Chicken karaage was the only thing I did really like. Best I've had? No. But still great. 4/5 Rump cap was just really disappointing. No flavor and it was not tender. 1/5 Unagi chazuke had good flavor but again the rice was dry. Here is where the service did not impress me. The man who came to pour the broth did it so fast like he was in a rush, maybe he was, that droplets of the broth ricocheted onto my outfit went through and reached my thighs and actually hurt. I didn't react because... well... I didn't want to seem whiny. But that was not ok to be in such a rush that you cause harm or pain to a customer. 1/5 for the service, 3/5 for the dish Overall, wanted to love this place but it sadly disappointed. I didn't even bother to order the honey toast because everything else was overall just ok.

A standout was the pork with shiso and the gizzard which was a flavor bomb. Service was really good and the staff were nice. TL;DR Refined…read morebentos, musubis, and other Japanese dishes to go. ----- HIGOTO Japanese Eatery (HJE) is a solid option for takeaway Japanese food. I had HJE on my radar for a while and was finally able to stop in for lunch in the first week of July 2026. The restaurant is located in the same shopping plaza as the Kaimuki Times. In fact, it's on the ground floor next to Times. It's tucked behind some large concrete walls next to the parking lot, but just keep your eyes open and you should be able to find it. I ordered the Fish Lovers bento and a Cheeseburger musubi, both with the mulitgrain rice. The Fish Lovers bento was PACKED with offerings, including chikuwa, ahi katsu, shrimp tempura, miso butterfish, grilled saba (?), and grilled salmon, plus an assortment of wonderful side dishes. The Cheeseburger musubi included a beef patty topped with cheese, plus multigrain rice all wrapped in nori. I was a big fan of both my choices, and I would definitely order them again!

I was so upset with myself, because I wanted to go here weeks ago when I found it by accident on Instagram, lol. Next time I will not forget. So the bento that was left was the chicken Kara'age. I wasn't expecting much since it was the last meal available. I decided to try it after organizing my clothing in my closet. Honestly I wasn't hungry, but it was approaching 5pm which was very late for me, lol. I nuked it a little to get it warm removing all the cold items out first then ate the side dishes first I thought mmm, not bad. But then came the chicken and I was mesmerized by the first bite. I thought okay take a few more bites then judge it. So I thought maybe I was starving, so I dipped it into the sauce it came with and my mouth started to have a party inside! The dip reminds me of Japan and the red rice is exactly how my Okinawan mom used to make it. Well, I'm sold and if this is the least wanted plate of the entire day I can't even imagine how spectacular the others must taste. The lady at the register was so kind and apologized several times for being sold out. I totally understand but she definitely meant the apology I can tell. Reminds me of Japan again and she was wearing a mask which is a Japanese custom these days. There is a little table outside for seating of three I think. This place is small but don't be fooled, I heard and seen the massive line this awesome eatery can get. Go early and the wait will definitely be worth it.

While ordering our drinks we were reminded again that they close at 2pm so we ordered our food at the same time feeling rushed. The Sashimi Zen and Chirashi Zen tasted beautifully. We enjoyed the quality of fish and variety available. As we were eating the waitresses would come by and take any empty dishes from our sets while reminding us again, that they close at 2pm. It felt really rushed and unwelcoming. Before we could finish eating they dropped the bill off to our table and checked to see if they could take payment within less than a couple minutes. The waitress then came back with a bag for us to take the sake home. We quickly finished our meal and I paid cash so we could just leave at this point. They were so quick to rush us out that while we were standing outside the restaurant the waitress came outside to let me know she didn't put everything she needed to charge us for on the bill so I needed to come back inside to pay an additional amount. The food was great but we can get better service for the same quality elsewhere.

The interior also made us feel like we were in Japan. Off the happy hour menu, we ordered the Tofu Salad, Tuna with avocado and chili oil, and the Tuna with wasabi. We also ordered the Presidential Curry, which was a curry rice dish with chicken karaage and their mille feuille tonkatsu. For the price, the portions of the tuna were very generous. I also really enjoyed the curry dish. I liked the way that the katsu was cut, every bite was crispy. It was a great value meal. We will definitely be back to try some other dishes!

For what it is, it's not bad and I think we ordered 6 items which came out to $25/person. The reason why I chose 3/5 though was because the menu items were a hit-or-miss for me, and the mediocre ones made me feel like it was something I could have made at home, but better. I'll talk about the worth-it items below, won't bother with the rest. Chicken Nanban (4.5/5): Crispy chicken meets kewpie mayo tartar-esq sauce. Yakisoba (4/5): I just like noodles, and their yakisoba was a good portion size for $12. Overall, it was okay and I feel like they do well because they are open later than most places; definitely not my first choice for Japanese food on the island.

3/15/26 Got treated for my birthday today by my wife "Arigatou!"…read more This was our third time here the 1st being their grand opening day 3 years ago Definitely not our last visit Chef n server are from Japan I wish I could speak Japanese but we had a great time trying to converse in broken Japanese n English Besides, we were the only ones there for almost an hour, so we had all their attention That made for another great experience! The 19 course omakase featured so many fresh seafoods, tempura, miso soup, dessert... Way better than alot of other omakases in town For your last morsel you get to pick anything you ate earlier n have it again Could have gone w Fatty Otoro or Popping Fresh Ikura but chose Ama Ebi Why? Because it was so Juicy Sweet n only in season now!

The space was clean and had a more upscale feel. Did the 19-course omakase and each bite was incredible. The fish is fresh from Japan, and you can see and feel the attention to detail. My parents do not like "fancy" experiences (they've dined at 3 Michelins but prefer a more laid back experience), and this place struck the right balance. It's upscale but also familiar. Favorite bite was the chutoro and second favorite was the chawanmushi :) That chilled clam soup was something else - I wish I could have a whole bowl of that! Definitely make an effort to check them out!

You can call in or text, 8087720146, your order. I don't know of any app they might be affiliated with...or any online option. Unfortunately, they were sold out of the Churry and may offer it Friday. Their IG post stated availability only this Thursday and Friday. A bit disappointing but mitigated by the excellent katsu bento. The only quibble: they don't provide enough sauce. The thinky layered pork - mille-feuille style - was tender and the panko crust crisp. I haven't been to Nana Ai Katsu in a while and had forgotten just how fantastic their tonkatsu is...damn.

The sauce they use for the katsu is a familiar taste; they use bull-dog sauce. The dressing tastes like the dressing from Sams Club. I don't remember it being this way. Maybe they changed? I feel like Koromo and Tamafuji are better. I guess maybe this place is considered a take out spot? It's pretty much serve yourself water, bottle drinks only and order at the counter. The place is clean and wasn't busy. You're most likely going to have to get street parking or go to the paid parking area and walk around a little bit. If you want an OK katsu place, I guess this is the place.
