Came here because of the amazing reviews and was not disappointed. Will keep it short and sweet. Walked in with a party of 2 with no wait at all because we didn't mind dining on the counter. Ordered the hamburger steak and Demi glacé and the butter nori fries. Fries were bomb, but best enjoyed while hot! Entree came out and I was disappointed that my hamburger steak was too pink for my liking. The staff was so kind and accommodating. They took it back with no questions asked and brought it out a few minutes later cooked to perfect temperature. Want to mention that it was the chef who brought it back along with apologies for the misfire. I really appreciated that. Everything we ordered was delicious. Had to stop myself from filling up on the yummy soup and the homemade garlic seasoning for the rice is a nice personal touch that makes you feel like you're having a home cooked meal with family. Note: New Menu just dropped in June 2026 If you're into Japanese-style hamburger steak and sizzling platters, this spot delivers. The hamburger steak was juicy, flavorful, and came out piping hot on the iron plate. The sauces paired perfectly with the meat, and the portion size was satisfying without feeling overly heavy. What I really liked was the old-school Japan steakhouse vibe. Nothing overly fancy--just good comfort food done right. The sizzling sound when the plate hits the table instantly gets you hungry. Service was super friendly, food came out quickly, and the restaurant was clean and welcoming. Parking can be a little tight depending on when you go, but it's definitely worth the visit. It's a metered lot behind the building... it's actually really cheap parking but can get busy. I pleasantly enjoyed my time here, but was let down when it felt a bit warm while we had lunch. Maybe it was because we were seated in the corner booth, but it was only slightly uncomfortable. Woohoo. We finally got a chance to dine at Marujuu. We've been wanting to try there since they opened but the lines were too long. We went at Lunchtime which according to our server was pretty mellow. Service was great from the front to the back. Very attentive and friendly. We tried the Hamburger Steak with both the Signature Onion Sauce and the Grated Daikon Ponzu sauce. Both were unique and delicious . The Hamburger Steaks were perfectly cooked and served piping hot on Sizzling platters. Their "Miso" soup was delicious it tasted like a Beef Onion Soup. They start you off with a cup of soup and a plate of rice, both you can refill yourself from the side bar. They have countertop and table service as well as delivery. Located where the old Chubbies and Koko Head Cafe used to be, with parking meters nearby. We got here around 530p on a Friday and was able to snag a booth seat without having any wait time. The place had countertop, booth and bench seats throughout the establishment, that quickly filled up. We were offered onion soup and water rather quickly and efficiently. We also didn't wait very long for our food to come through either (about 15 min). I was anticipating a much longer wait time, based on other reviews, though I believe we came here on a good day, they were turning tables in that 1 hour that we were there. And if you have good company, the time goes by quickly! As for the food, I ordered the signature onion sauce which was sweet, salty, and gritty all at the same time. I also tried my friend's Gorgonzola cheese sauce and it reminded me of the cheese in those cheese and cracker snack packs. Each hamburg comes with grilled vegetables (cabbage), pasta (spaghetti with marinara), and white rice. You can add toppings or larger portions for an additional cost. Also got an order of the original salt fries, no frills about it. Overall, the portion size for a regular was smaller than I had anticipated (went home and ate a snack afterwards). A friend of mine who went previously, mentioned the large portions just have more of the sides, rather than the meat itself. Ended the night with the self-service soft serve ice cream that has pineapple, vanilla or a mix of both. You can opt for a cup or cone. Just know that the machine pushes the product out very quickly, so if you don't have the technique down, you won't be able to stack the ice cream as high as you'd like it, without it toppling over. While I wouldn't call this a budget option, you definitely get what you pay for as you can get as much soup and rice as you'd like to have with your meal. The hamburger was juicy tender and you can tell that there has been a lot of care into the recipe. My oysters were also delicious and full of flavor, crispy on the outside and not too salty. Located in Kaimuki, this is a casual quick-service type restaurant. The menu has lots to choose from so variety for everyone. There are even options for the kids. I wanted to check out this new Japanese hamburger place that replaced a previous hamburger place (Chubbies). Totally different experience! This hamburger is thicker and juicier. It's served with a variety of sauces and rice, spaghetti, and cooked cabbage. You also get a cup of soup to start your meal. I liked the Japanese hamburger. It was very tasty with actual pieces of meat in the ground beef. You also don't really need sauce but its nice to have on the side. All in all a good meal, very good and satisfying. My boyfriend and I decided to get dinner in Kaimuki a few weeks ago and we had the opportunity to walk into Marujuu. We were serviced very quickly and sat at the counter. I had the classic sized hamburger steak with Gorgonzola cheese sauce and my boyfriend had the larger sized hamburger steak with the onion sauce. My boyfriend who is normally not a fan of blue cheese really enjoyed the Gorgonzola sauce on my portion. There was a bit of a wait as each portion is made to order, but it was well worth it. Each plate came out hot and sizzling. But if you're bored while waiting for your food, there are numerous TV screens and anime/manga paraphernalia that you can look at on the walls. The plates are a cross between the Japanese hamburger steak and American diner food style. The hamburger steaks come with a small portion of pasta, some hot veggies, and a side of white rice. I highly recommend upgrading to an additional sauce to change up the flavor profile of the hamburger steak. Overall, it was fantastic and I'm excited for the next time I can dine in again! I went here with some friends for lunch. The walls are covered in anime posters. The kitchen is visible from the sitting area. It is a small place though so seating is limited. There is a u-shaped counter in the middle and tables around the perimeter. While there is curry and steak available, the main reason we came was for their specialty with is Japanese hamburg. This is a juicy handmade hamburger patty with your choice of toppings and sauce along with vegetables, spaghetti and rice. The hamburger was soft, juicy and flavorful and definitely the highlight. The sauces are good and there is a decent variety to chose from. The rice and vegetables were pretty standard. The spaghetti was a little lack luster and bit bland. Marujuu is in the old Chubbie's Burger spot in Kaimuki. There's plenty of parking in two different lots. In the bigger lot, the parking was under $5 on a Saturday. When we came around lunchtime, it was fairly crowded, but there was no wait for a table of 2. Their menu is pretty simple, so you know that the food is going to be good. The meal started off with an onion broth/soup thing that I wasn't expecting. It was super flavorful and something nice to sip on while we waited for our food. I got the Hamburg with the signature onion sauce. The hamburger was juicy, and the sauce was great! It was the perfect balance of sweet and savory. The inside of the restaurant is very cute, and they even had video games! The service was excellent. The waitress asked if we had been there before and explained the menu to us. We came here during their lunch rush and luckily for us the wait was only five minutes to get seated! Though it was a full house it didnt seem hectic. The inside had posters of some popular japanese cartoons and books. They also had a tv playing some anime. Pretty cool how they have cups and a pitcher of water ready for you. The table is clean. Before they serve you your order you will receive a piping hot.. wait no an extremely tongue burning scorching heat of soup. It was so hot and i dont mean spicy. Feels like it came straight out of the fire. I was impressed. So ergo I had to wait five minutes for it to cool down haha.. well as we all finished the soup and a few cups of our water we waited and waited while all the workers were tending to other customers. So after another extra five minutes. Then another 10 min of waiting seeing people with larger groups getting seated and served their food before us and then leaving. It's been over 30 minutes since we ordered and still no food watching people enjoy their hamburger steak. Finally out food arrives! The food! While little cup of HOT soup was good.. No the hamburg steak sadly wasn't juicy and no it wasn't tasty as expected. The better half and I have been missing Japan and especially the food so we were excited to hear about Marujuu. Marujuu is a Japanese style hamburger steak place or shall I say Hamburg... Marujuu is located where Chubbie's, and Koko Head Cafe used to be. Marujuu is a sister company of Izakaya Tenkichi and Tori Ton which if like the food there, you will certainly love it here. When you first step foot inside you get the anime feels like when going to an anime shop in Harajuku and Akihabara in Tokyo Japan. What makes these hamburgs so special? Well instead of using all beef, they took a page out of Slaters 50/50 where they use a combination of beef and pork. Their "secret sauce" takes about half a day to perfect is what I was told and I believe them as it's fire! The menu is easy to read with photos. Customer service is friendly and they have a pitcher of water on the table for self serve. How do you order? First you choose regular or large size. Second, choose which sauce you want (Signature Onion, Cheese, Soy Glaze, Grated Daikon Ponzu, Green Onion Salt). Third, you can add on toppings. We ordered their fries and it was so tasty that we couldn't stop eating it. For myself I had to try the OG style Signature Onion and it didn't disappoint. It came on a sizzling hot skillet and the hamburg was nice and juicy and the portion size was satisfactory. It came with onion soup (very flavorful), pasta, white rice and cabbage. The Better Half, was swayed from ordering the hamburg as she saw STEAK and it was calling her name. Hey I didn't try to stop her... "Happy Wife, Happy Life!" She ordered the ribeye and she ate it all up. I guess I didn't have to ask her how it was as the empty plate speaks for itself. The staff was patient and very attentive throughout our meal. I just came for the food but Marujuu exceeded my expectations in regards to the quality of food and service. When you walk in, the staff immediately provides a welcoming atmosphere beginning with all of the staff greeting you before you get seated, to the server providing English-translated manga (specifically Chainsaw Man and Attack on Titan) for my family to read while we wait for the food. The wait for our main dishes, which were three hamburg plates, didn't take much time at all and we probably waited 20 minutes at the most, if not less. I've only been here once but the food was amazingly delicious and filling. The regular sized hamburg plates provide enough food for the average hungry stomach! I think it was interesting that the pasta on the plate had a subtle tomato flavor to it but yet it still went well with the demi-glace sauce I chose for the hamburg. The hamburg itself had juices flowing out of it with every cut I made into it, and the extra fried egg I ordered paired well with the demi-glace by making it have a creamier but yet still really savory taste to it. I quite literally savored every bite I took. The Calpico Sour (alcoholic drink) that I ordered was super cold and refreshing. I could barely taste the alcohol with how well they mixed everything in it! Price wise, it does cost ~$24 for the main hamburg dish without any add-ons, and depending on what you get for add-ons (or if you decide to order the more expensive rib-eye), it can get a bit expensive. Lunch in Kaimuki, Honolulu, Hawai'i... Irene, Daniel, and I decided to try this relatively new business named, Marujuu. It specializes in Japanese-style hamburger or "hamburg". Daniel and Irene parked in the paid metered stalls nearby. I walked a bit and found free street parking up the hill. Daniel arrived first, before the opening time of 11am to secure a spot in line. Good move because they do not take reservations and they're quite popular right now. Located at the former Koko Head Café and Chubbie's, this space between the parking lot and 12th Avenue, Marujuu had some cool anime decor on the walls. We had a table next to the open door in the back corner by the men's restroom. The glare from the outside was a bit annoying, but the breeze was refreshing! A pitcher of iced water was left on our table, along with plastic cups and a basket of utensils and disposable towel. Service was very attentive and helpful. I was surprised when they ladled the gravy over our hamburgs. I enjoyed all three flavors that we tried and shared: Green Onion Salt Marinade, Sweet Garlic Soy (a bit spicy for me) and the Signature Onion Sauce. Our favorite was the Original. Each meal came with a soup, pasta, veggies, and white rice. You can upgrade your rice and hamburg to larger portions for a slight upcharge. Marujuu is located where Koko Head Cafe was located in Kaimuki. The decor is anime themed and it's very yellow inside. The table tops are for parties of 3+ but there was one table that seated 2 people. The center is a U shape counter seating. From what I noticed, it's seating for individuals and parties of 2. The menu is easy to read with photos. Customer service is friendly and they have a pitcher of water on the table for self serve. You choose what you would like in regular size or large size in the Hamburg section. Then you choose which flavor you would like to try. There are 5 different flavors available. Step 3 is adding on any toppings. You can upgrade your vegetables, pasta size and rice in steps 4-6. The other menu sections are slightly different but you would basically choose the size you would like. It's hard to choose since they all look so good but we decided to go with their Hamburg options. I dined with Irene and LB. We all ordered a different flavor and shared so we could try more of the menu. The three flavors we ordered were the Signature Onion Sauce, Sweet Garlic Soy Glaze and Green Onion Salt Marinade. They all came with onion soup, pasta, white rice and cabbage. From being seated till we got our food took about 30 minutes. It wasn't long at all and we got to catch up from all our travels. The food was good and portion size was just right. Ordered the Japanese hamburger steak with cheese and it was pure comfort food. The patty was juicy, tender, and full of flavor, with that classic Japanese-style seasoning that's rich but not heavy. The melted cheese on top was perfect--creamy, gooey, and took it to the next level. The sauce was savory with a slight sweetness and paired so well with the meat and rice. Everything came out hot and felt freshly made. Simple dish, executed really well. If you're in the mood for something hearty, cozy, and satisfying, this is a solid choice. My husband and I were really excited to learn about Marujuu and couldn't wait to try their food. I immediately fell in love with the anime decor and soundtracks playing in the background. My 3-year was entertained by the Pac-man arcade console and Pokémon on the TV. The servers were incredibly nice and patient as our rowdy kids created one mess after another (plate on the ground, spilled water, crayons all over the place). As for the food, I highly recommend the burgers with their original sauce to start off as a baseline. We also tried the Wagyu steak. Each platter comes with a cup of soup (which was delicious but also fatty), a side salad (it could have used more dressing), and a side of spaghetti. The steak was very bland and dry even though I requested medium rare. For dessert, they have a self-serve soft-serve ice cream machine. I couldn't find the price for the ice cream posted anywhere, but I had two fussy kids with me AND I also wanted ice cream so I filled up 3 cones. My husband later told me that the ice cream was $4 each. Now that I know what I like from their menu, I would come back again if I had a serious meat craving.
