Visited Yohei Sushi for lunch on a Sunday to celebrate my sisters birthday. We had a reservation for 1pm. I got there a little earlier and they let me know before being sat that they close at 2pm. While ordering our drinks we were reminded again that they close at 2pm so we ordered our food at the same time feeling rushed. The Sashimi Zen and Chirashi Zen tasted beautifully. We enjoyed the quality of fish and variety available. As we were eating the waitresses would come by and take any empty dishes from our sets while reminding us again, that they close at 2pm. It felt really rushed and unwelcoming. Before we could finish eating they dropped the bill off to our table and checked to see if they could take payment within less than a couple minutes. The waitress then came back with a bag for us to take the sake home. We quickly finished our meal and I paid cash so we could just leave at this point. They were so quick to rush us out that while we were standing outside the restaurant the waitress came outside to let me know she didn't put everything she needed to charge us for on the bill so I needed to come back inside to pay an additional amount. After paying a second time she gave something to my sister for her birthday and sent us on our way. Considering there were other parties still seated in the restaurant when we left and they were aware of us celebrating a birthday I feel pretty disappointed about our experience there. We weren't offered an option to order dessert and they were in such a rush to get us to leave they didn't even have the bill rung up correctly. We went there for an early Mother's Day celebration. We went with the Ala carte menu and found it large and varied. We had baby squid for appetizers and chicken. While tasty the chicken was very greasy, lots of grease on the paper and even the next day when we had left overs, it was still greasy. We shared a sushi roll as well. The entrees included sashimi, a chirashi bowl, egg custard (which I called chow won mushy) butterfish (which was two big fillets) and the rice with curry waggu. While the waggu was melt in your mouth, there were only small slivers of meat (no potato or carrots). I would not order it again. The service is friendly and attentive. And there was a team effort in ordering and serving items. We saw all three of the wait help at our table. We wanted to commemorate the occasion with a picture. Not only did she take pics on our phone but also asked if she could take one on her phone. A few minutes later she presented us with a Polaroid type photo. Nice touch. Tonight we returned for the Kaiseki dinner. It was outstanding for $120. You really get great value. Each dish is presented beautifully. Our server Kim was so polite and knowledgeable. From the appetizer to the desert, each course was presented with its own dish. Each thing was prepared beautifully and so flavorful. They made sure we had adequate water and hot tea, which was really nice. For the Nigiri platter we chose to not have uni and they did substitute with snow crab leg. Omg I just wrote this review and wanted to go again today only to discover that they have discontinued their happy hour! Boo! Scared to enter this high end sushi restaurant due to the exorbitant omakase prices? Well don't be! They won't give you the Pretty Woman treatment and from the hours of 1:30-5:00 (last call 4;30) it is quite affordable. So happy to finally try the Happy Hour here with a friend I haven't seen in ages. It was perfect since the restaurant was pretty empty the day we went, which gave us leisurely time to talk. The decor is simple and elegant in an understated Japanese way. We were therefore puzzled by the paper towels we got instead of napkins. I'm hoping it's because they ran out and not because they downgraded for happy hour. The happy hour menu (the only menu offered during those hours) is limited but it was just right for us. We started with lemon sours ($6) which came in heavy generous sized hammered "glasses" with fresh lemons. Refreshing and not watered down! The menu mainly consists of 2 choices of ramen, 3 choices of mini don (rice bowls), toppings, and a scattering of otsumami (side dishes), good to nibble on when drinking. The drink menu had a little of everything. We each got a yuzu shio ramen which was " muah!" with its perfectly al dente noodles, light but umami broth (that did not seem to have msg), garnished with a soft yolked ajitsuke tamago, chicken charsiu, menma (bamboo shoots), nori, and leeks for a balanced combination of tastes and textures! We shared a mentaiko don since we both love the salty fishy egg sacs! I also got the tako wasa which was fresh and cleared the sinuses. My friend got the tamagoyaki. We left with full and happy bellies! I've been to Yohei many times over the years so when I heard they were opening up in Kahala, I was excited. It's much closer to home and parking in the private lot is much better than their original location. Yohei Sushi Kahala is an upscale restaurant from the original location as a heads up. A nice upgrade that is well deserved for the owners. Menu has changed a bit since they opened. The best part of the menu is there's photos of the menu items to help you decide. Customer service is attentive and what you would expect at a Japanese restaurant. The fish is fresh and the sake washes sushi down. Their daily or monthly specials are not to be overlooked. We do wish there were more cooked items for Mink to order but overall a good addition to the Kahala area. read more

Determined to make a memorable first actual omakase experience for my parents, I did some heavy research and landed on Yohei Sushi - Kahala. Service - Immaculate. Our waitress was very kind and hospitable. She explained each part of the omakase thoroughly and ensured we were taken care of throughout our experience. 5/5 Food - Each course was a delight to consume. The kazunoko was a light, refreshing start, and the ankimo was a pleasant surprise. I doubt I'd tried that at many other places for obvious reasons. The cod milt chawanmushi was... interesting? Not bad by any means. The salad was light and fresh. The tempura was excellent; no greasiness whatsoever. The nigiri selection was very impressive. By far, some of the best fish I've had outside of Japan. It stands up to Takenoko (Hilo) and Sushi Jin (Mountain View, CA), and I thought the pieces were generous. Note: I opted for the extra 3 pieces (10 instead of 7) for $20 more, and it was 100% worth it. The red miso soup and yuzu sorbet were a great way to end a memorable omakase experience! 5/5 Value - At $120 per person, this omakase is definitely worth a try. 1st time to this location. Omakase - not sure which one I got (hubs did all the planning) but was more than enough food for me, including giving some to Hubs and also feeding baby. Ordered kids meal for Baby. Wasn't necessary b/c she ended up eating more of my food than me! But her udon was yums, so it worked out. Dashi with the dropper stuff - DELISH. Baby drank most of it out of the dropper. She had fun with that one. Baby apparently likes Shirako - this was also very tasty. Out of all, my fave was the Uni...because well, I love uni. And I can't remember which dish smelled one way and tasted another...and I loved it. I could do without the Shabs and Dessert but Hubs and Baby ate those. I was full and had to make sure I could eats sushi. Food was very good, but best part was the entire experience. The wait staff friendly and talked to Baby. My wife and I have visited this restaurant several times in the past for special events and every time we go there it is always highly satisfying. This particular time we went there to celebrate my wife's birthday. My wife and I particularly like seating in the booth which is much more comfortable with the provided cushions and the somewhat more privacy. After going through the menu we decided to get the omakase order they call "Hau 'Oli". We had this course once before and really enjoyed it. There is an option to add a butterfish or steak to the course. We had the butterfish the last time so we went with the steak which was excellent! A note to anyone that would like to try this Japanese restaurant - the food here is top notch Japanese. This kind of restaurant would fit right at home among any of the 5 star Japanese restaurants in Osaka or Tokyo Japan. Each course is brought to your table and every dish is described to you in the presentation. We also enjoyed our waitress "Jennifer". She is Japanese but has an English name. We visited Yohei Sushi in Kahala area. I believe this is a branch from Yohei in Dillingham side. This restaurant is located across the Kahala mall, they have plenty of parking. It was lunch time on a Sunday, the place was not crowded at all. When we enter the restaurant, immediately I can sense this is a high-quality Japanese restaurant, the interior design is nice and elegant, the staffs are nice with great smile. We were offered the lunch special menu and there are a lot of choices for set lunch. (We did not know we could also order from the regular menu because the staff did not hand us the regular menu). This place is more expensive than most regular Japanese restaurant. However, you get what you paid for. The set lunch we ordered included pickles, noodles, potato salad, miso soup, chawanmushi, etc. I ordered the B1 Nigiri zen, 10 pieces of sushi for $68, my wife ordered the B4 Nigiri and tempura zen for $58. Everything was nice and fresh, the bowls, the plates, every item was nice and high quality. At the end of the dinner, they do not serve ice cream, instead, they serve either coffee or tea, which is very unusual. However, my wife said the coffee was good! Not just a simple house coffee. Another subject I want to talk about is their toilet. YES, toilet, they have in my opinion the best, clean, well-designed toilet I have been to any Japanese restaurant. Toto fully automatic toilet. They also provided mouth wash, cups, Q-tips, etc. They also have private room that is very nice. We've been there with large groups and our guest have always commented on the quality and freshness of the fish. Came here for the ala carte sushi/izakaya offerings. The food, service, and atmosphere were splendid! The ikura, scallop, and medium fatty belly nigiri were melt in your mouth divine (insert happy dance). The fish to rice ratio and 1 bite to mouth ratio was perfect. The nigiri were well formed with just a hint of wasabi and held up well to a light dunking in soy sauce. The karaage chicken was delicately battered and moist/juicy inside. Tempura was similar in fry and not very oily. The unagi roll was also tasty, but less so as compared to the outstanding simple but well executed flavors of the other dishes. The main dining area is in a separate section from the omakase dining experience. The main dining area is cozy but very peaceful and somewhat majestic. There's also a Toto bidet in the wash room! I gravitate to the shops at Kahala MKT scene for two huge "townie" advantages: ample parking and a convenient location right off the H1 freeway (both west and east bound). The decor is modern zen. At lunch hour, tranquil music and earth accent pillows contribute to the peaceful ambience. At dinner time, the restaurant transforms into a bustling but fluid operation. Service is exceptional at both times. Patrons are a shake-up of locals and Japanese nationals. Any omakase should be reserved at least 3 days in advance. Otherwise, their lunch sets and a la carte dinner items are equally satisfying. I was fortunate enough to experience both lunch and dinner service one day apart with two different groups of friends. No matter what you choose, the sushi will not disappoint. The service, quality, and food presentation reflect the price point. Expect to spend at least $100 per person including tip. We had an amazing omakase experience at Yohei Kahala. Beautiful ambiance and atmosphere, the omakase bar is off from the main dining area so it was nice and private. The waitresses did a great job at explaining each dish the chef prepared and were quick to refill our drinks, give us warm hand towels, and switch our silverware for certain dishes. They even walked me to the restroom and waited for me until I was done, and escorted me back to the omakase bar. Exceptional service. It was Sunday afternoon, we were planning to drop into J. Dolan's for a slice, but my friend really preferred to eat Japanese food and Yohei was offering some good happy hour specials. I was dressed a bit on the casual side, but they welcomed us in and gave us a nice seat. From then on, we got tons of excellent and super friendly service. They also have a sushi bar but I decided to sit in the Ala carte restaurant area . Yohei sushi has another location in Kalihi along the canal on Kokea St. I ordered their creamy crab spring roll that was very good . Along with couple pieces of nigiri which is sold per piece. Four and a half stars! Came here for continued birthday celebrations and Yohei was mentioned. I know that the one by Costco Alakawa was so congested with traffic down that way that Kahala sounded lovely. The parking lot is horrendous for the stalls are super squished together. However this does not deter a hungry person! We made reservations and I asked for a booth since I had elderly. They do offer private rooms only if the party is ordering all omakase. The booth was nice and tucked away from the regular tables. They only seat 4 people so if you have a bigger group you won't sit them all in a booth. The ambiance is very Japanese and serene. They welcome you in and take your order quickly. Everything with a smile and delicate touches. The lunch menu isn't so extensive but enough for all who love or don't love seafood. I believe the dinner menu must many more options. We ordered a chirashi, butter fish teishoku, a chicken curry teishoku, and a butter fish and sashimi combo. We were lucky for it was an anniversary so they offer complimentary drinks. Beer, highball, wine, soft drinks or tea. That was a surprise happiness. The foods came out quickly and everyone was so happy. The food was beautifully displayed as well as delicious. I was shocked as to how tender and lightly battered my chicken was for the curry. I had wanted tempura but I decided on this meal. I had asked for a complimentary birthday dessert but I think they didn't understand. I don't think they offer this but they will put a candle on any dessert they have. All in all the ambiance, food, decor, even bathroom experience was very good. Terrific happy hour! Yohei sushi has a great happy hour menu from 2:00 to 5:00, keep in mind though that last call is at 4:30 for some reason (even for drinks :o ). The prices are good, though it's easy to go overboard and order a ton of dishes like we did. Of everything, the tempura and the Sashimiwere my favorites. The sake sampler is nice, especially if you are curious about the various nuances of sipping sakes. Haven't tried dinner yet, but will definitely come back for happy hour. Located right next to J. Sushi omakase in the east part of town was non-existent, until Yohei decide their first foray out of Kalihi would be a brand new build out in Kū'ono Marketplace. This is not the usual Japanese restaurant that serves everything kind of local Japanese American dish. Yohei calls their counter omakase, Kīʻnōʻhi, a first for them and a first for Kahala. At this time, the only options are a $200 + omakase at the counter or a more reasonable $100 + omakase served as sets in the dining area. An ala carte menu is still to come after they soft open. For my part, I hope they keep the ala carte options at a high price point to discourage patrons that are looking for an elevated shorts/tee/slipper Kahala Sushi @ Zippy's experience. How is it? The complete experience is elevated and novel, but still rough around the edges. That is not a good thing in the suburbs at their price points. As you are escorted to the counter you pass a display case showing the quality of their glassware and small dishes used in the omakase, then a vertical wall of wines. It sets high expectations so seeing the actual counter is a bit of a letdown. The lighting is warm but the background counters are dark and look laminated rather than all wood. The actual counter you are seated at is noticeably made of wood in sections rather than large shaped planks. I don't mean to be uncomplimentary but the look is a friend's upscale 90's home kitchen. Their beverage menu showcases a very good selection of wine and nihonshu curated by Mitsy Murata, of Lake Biwa, Shiga, and Yoko Suginami, of Kure, Hiroshima, respectively. I asked for a recommendation to start and was served a Hiroshima Junmai Ginjo, Fukucho Biho. The recommendation really pleased me as it is produced by Japan's first female Toji, Miho Imada. I have tasted her products before and first learned of her from a Yelp HIFF screening of, "Kampai! Sake Sisters", back in 2019. My follow up was a brute of a nihonshu, Tamagawa Yamahai Junmai Muroka Nama Genshu "Red Label", by a non-Japanese Toji, Philip Harper, who is known for pushing the boundaries of expectations; in fact, his "Ice Breaker" is one of my favorite seasonal nihonshu served over ice. The meal starts with an ichiban dashi accompanied by a dropper of salted chicken stock. You taste the initial dashi and add drops to enhance the flavor as you sip. That was followed by a trio of nice tuna and salmon, and a delightful interpretation of chawanmushi resembling a light potage. In between was an organic salad with a komezu guava dressing that felt like it belonged in a teishoku set rather than a sushi omakase. The omakase tries to create the flow of a kaiseki with what Yohei calls, Otsukuri Hassun. Otsukuri is a mixed sashimi offering and hassun is a "mountain to the sea offering of meats and vegetables' that is supposed to reflect specific seasonality and the chef's skills at dishes other than sushi. It looked pretty but I felt it was missing depth and seasonality. The business photos show a full nine dishes but one of my dishes was just soy. Additionally, small plates of salt and wasabi were added to the side but a hassun should not need any additional seasoning. The sushi courses and the grilled gindara were very good. The only rough spot there was the jabara otoro nigiri. It must be aged so the bands of fat and sinew bind and look good, and should be simply seasoned to highlight the texture and flavor. Mine was well marinated and the connective sinew was pulling apart on the nigiri - it wasn't worthy of a photo. The finishing dish and desserts were also rough spots. Serving a soup at the end of an omakase is to help settle the stomach after a procession of rich nigiri and dishes. Yohei served a tiny ramen - the noodles were very forgetable and wheat noodles didn't help settle my stomach and clear my palate for dessert. For the dessert duo, a warm matcha brownie was dry and falling apart; the ice cream was too hard and the monaka that accompanied it was stale. There is a finale, called art grage. I'll let you see it for yourself and decide if you like it. This is a sushi omakase experience trying to combine the special flavors of Japan with the fresh bounty of our islands. The atmosphere was a refreshing upgrade from lower priced sushi omakase and the service was attentive and informed. It is worthwhile trying for its slightly novel approach if you are willing to pay for it. read more

My grandma and I were in the Kahala area looking for a place to have lunch. As I was driving past Zippy's I recalled seeing a post on Instagram about Yohei sushi so we decided to go and check it out. As we walked in we were greeted by the host and waitresses who were all so friendly! They kindly informed us that we may not be able to be severed because of an already made last call for food. We got to Yohei at around 1300 hrs and had no idea that their lunch service closes at 1400 hrs. Luckily the chef agreed to serve us and we were so excited! To our surprise they had lunch specials which were decently priced. I wouldn't say it's an everyday lunch spot for the average person but it's a nice treat for those long weeks. My grandma ordered the nigiri and tempura zen and she said everything was delicious! I had ordered the sashimi zen which was also so delicious! Everything we ate was so fresh and presentation was spectacular. The service was great and the ambiance was very modern with nice paintings throughout. We were seated in the dining area at 11:45 am on a weekday and there were only a few people there at the time. Service was extremely slow, and only the tempura portion of my lunch set was served after waiting 45 minutes. It was lukewarm at best. My sushi came sometime after I finished the tempura, and my spouse's chirashi sushi lunch set came even later. It was not pleasant eating my lunch while my spouse waited for his, even though he encouraged me to go ahead and eat. My salmon nigiri looked funny with the edges all dark and dried out looking, but perhaps it was intentional to look fancy (?). There was also no attempt at all by the server to refill our hot tea or iced water either. Waiting for the check was another frustrating wait, so we ended up going to the front to ask for the check and pay. On the bit pricey side, but well worth it. Food quality was excellent, well-presented - sushi platter, assorted chef's choice, tempura and Kauai jewel shrimp and scallops (so ono!) were so well done, tasty, awesome. Service was tops from the welcome upon arrival throughout the meal! And the ambiance of this well designed contemporary tasteful restaurant (yes, I know it's new) is one of the best I've experienced locally in recent years. Tried both omakase and regular dining. Both were great! Staff were friendly and the food was very delicious. There are different types of omakase to choose from which is nice. Our chef was funny and professional. Would definitely go back again for both experiences. read more

So we got to restaurant at 4:35 for happy hour that is posted until 5 pm. Once there there they told us last order was 4:30. It was posted on menu as 2-5 pm happy hour LO 4:30. Who knows what LO is?? Lost some good business as refused to serve us until 5:00 pm. read more

We had decided to do the Omakase Hoku dinner for $350 per person. There was another couple already having dinner at the table and I couldn't help but notice that the woman was in her t-shirt, very short denim shorts and slippers. She removed her slippers and was barefoot. Seriously that is not only disgusting this snobby little restaurant allowed them to be barefoot and in shorts. If this was Japan they wouldn't be allowed in, I don't care who you are or how much money you have, be respectful, be mindful of others. Overall experience was terrible. Chef never acknowledged us, the sous chef looked like the dishwasher with his rumpled uniform and he was over all disheveled. Omakase experience was not even close to what you expect. Half the dinner came in a box already pre-boxed and we were given a menu to navigate what we were eating. Yes already prepared and pulled out of the fridge and handed to us. I was mortified, the non speaking Japanese Som tried to explain but her English was bad she just pointed to the menu. Finally the chef came and gave us our sushi (8 pieces) with still no hello no acknowledgement just being rude. When I asked what we were eating they told me to look at the menu. No soy sauce just plain salt to season the food, it was not presented well especially because this was a $700 dinner plus the sake. I kept noticing that the sushi had a slight "fishy" taste but it was mild, when I got home last night, myself and my guest got sick, my body was swollen, my feet and hands were huge, so yep can't help but think it was food poisoning. Several friends told me that they tried to walk in for dinner and was told no unless they had a reservation, all telling me the restaurant was empty. So turning over of the fish is not quick, so maybe a little old. Getting an Omakase sushi dinner pre-boxed for $350 per person was rip off...and the chef was nothing short of being an arrogant ass, cuoldn't help but think he didn't like my haole friend. Kind of obvious. A bit of advice don't ever eat at the sushi bar, crappy food, crappy attitude...restaurant is okay, sushi bar a complete rip off. read more
