Sushi den/Izakaya den is by far one of my favorite restaurants in the city. I've been trying to go for about a year and finally secured a reservation for my husband and me for our anniversary. The experience was everything I hoped for and more. My family has patronized Sushi Den for over 30 years and it consistently delivers the best Japanese in Denver. We've gotten into the habit of frequenting their sister restaurant Izakaya Den for the past 5 years, so it was nice to sit in the original dining room. The food is top notch, as always. My favorite is the spicy tuna over crisp rice along with their hamachi (yellowtail nigiri). The other 'standard' nigiri is wonderful too: salmon, eel, California roll with real crab, salmon roe. The roasted, salted yellowtail collar is a nice treat: doesn't look very impressive on the plate, but I assure you that the fish is super fresh, tender and seasoned perfectly. Ask for the teriyaki sauce on the side. The service is friendly and efficient. Despite the challenges with th staffing, the food and drinks were delivered quickly, plates were cleared and waters were filled without asking. I absolutely LOVE Sushi Den. I've had a lot of sushi in my life (unfortunately none in Japan yet) but I think Sushi Den is some of the best of the best. Freshest fish you can get inland, great service, the best sushi rice of all time, new and exciting fish from across the world, and although it is pricey it is not out of control. I love this place dearly and I will miss it when we leave. Please go! Worth every Penny! Also--if you are interested in sushi rolls, this is not the place for that. Go somewhere else. Get the fresh fish nigiri or sashimi, or do Omakase, but don't be a little pretentious jerk about sushi rolls. It makes you look dumb and not a true sushi lover. You're prob wondering what a SF girl is doing looking for some good sushi in Denver. Well, I'm a sushi fiend so coming here was on the list of spots to visit. Made a reservation ahead of time and scored a table as soon as we walked in. Our server was great. Explained the menu, made recommendations, refilled our drinks and tea, and checked back. She was busy but made it work. As long as we're on service, my one complaint is that the sushi was sitting way too long on the bars before they were taken to their tables. I saw items sitting up there for a good 10 minutes before someone ran the food. Sushi was dying up there which I wasn't thrilled about. Anyhoo, the sushi. Happy hour was going on so we indulged on quite a few items. New style salmon roll Aburi bincho Rocky Mountain hand rolls Kaibashira Canadian snow crab with American caviar Amaebi Mirugai Uni The rolls were interesting, different, not our faves. The Rocky Mountain hand roll consisted of smoked trout which I don't usually think of when it comes to sushi. My personal fave was the mirugai. It was fresh, seasoned well, and tasty. The others? Forgettable. Also, the uni was displayed on the menu as LIVE. To me, live is when they actually open up a live uni and serve it to you in the shell. This one came out of the typical box. Bummer. Probably the best sushi place I have visited in Denver. I went in on a Saturday late afternoon thinking I could catch their Happy Hour specials. Boy, did other people have the same idea. The place was packed and the wait was about 40 minutes. Totally worth it! I was able to snag us 2 seats at the bar where they had full service and fortunately did not have to wait the entire time. I enjoyed the yellowtail and salmon nigiri. Both types of fish were so fresh, they melted in my mouth. I also tried the firecracker roll - just the right amount of spice and flavor. The texture was also perfect as it had a little crunch in the center. It was served with cilantro and jalapeno which you could take off or leave on per your taste. My friend is currently keto so she did sashimi versions of everything. Also had the seaweed salad which was good, although a bit on the sweet side followed by the tofu. The food has always been great. We were a party of eight last night and could not have had a worse time. The server was over her head. We received food that was cold, and it came in no order at all. The excuse was that they have many cooks and food stations . Well, that's not how they got their reputation. It is obvious that they are understaffed. This negatively affected the entire evening. Everything is delicious, fresh, expertly prepared, and beautifully presented. Servers are attentive and great about answering menu questions. We have heard amazing things about this restaurant for years, and finally made it here for the first time last night. We booked omakase (I leave it to you) at the chef's table as a birthday dinner celebration. We were surprised at the line going into the restaurant - but were able to skip the line with the reservation. Masks are required to enter the restaurant, and go to your table - once seated you are able to take off your mask. We were seated at the counter overlooking the prep area, and were facing Chef Yasu. I will note that he reached out to my fiancé ahead of the meal - and while omakase is normally up to the chef, and what is fresh/in season, he also takes into account likes/dislikes and creates a specialized menu from there. Where to even start with this meal...it was amazing and thoughtful from beginning to end. Chef Yasu is truly an artist - every single bite was thoughtfully and beautifully arranged, and so dynamic and flavorful. The fish tasted so unbelievably fresh - I haven't had sushi this good since we lived in the Bay Area - and ate a Sushi Ran. Our waiter was extremely attentive and knowledgeable (about sake and sushi). I also appreciated the knowledge Chef Yasu shared with us while preparing our dishes. He followed that up with an email today with links to where he's from, where the fish is sourced (and sent to the restaurant within 24 hours), and 'mikan' or tangerines. Pretty good place- honestly didn't think Denver would even have good sushi being so land locked. My fav was prob the wild caught salmon sashimi that was on par with fatty otoro. Overall it's good but nothing to really rave too much about. I also think they kind of over use jalapeño in many of the dishes. The lighting in this place is a bit too dark and makes your food less appealing. Sushi Den. Nothing can truly describe my experience here-- you really have to try it yourself. However I'll try my best! We ordered a bunch of different sushi, sashimi, and nigiri, some off the regular menu and a couple off the catch of the day menu. While everything was 10/10, the wagyu roll, garden roll, and catch of the day Osaka style fish dish we got blew it out of the park. We ended up ordering a second garden roll even though we were full from the rest. The wagyu in the wagyu roll was perfectly savory and seasoned. The garden roll has a sesame sauce that sounds odd but is fantastic. Even my skeptical, meat-loving boyfriend fell in love with it. The sushi platter was a great way to try a bunch of different sushi/fish, and made for a great way to get filled up without spending a ton on extras. Lastly, the restaurant itself was gorgeous! Anyone who knows me knows that I LOVE Japanese food. I will pick it over basically anything else. So, of course I was excited to try Sushi Den. I've definitely been spoiled throughout my life by the sushi in LA and Vancouver, and I have to say there are some things here that'll have me coming back. I came in with a friend on a Sunday night and we were seated at the sushi bar after a 40 minute wait (checked in around 5:30pm) and it was a perk to get to sit in front of the sushi chefs. We got our sushi pretty much within the 10 minutes after submitting the order even though there wasn't an empty table at the restaurant. Props to the sushi chefs, they're the best. The highlight for us was the salmon aburi (seared salmon belly) and anything with eel. I could tell the difference in quality of the California rolls (for some reason, it's hard to find the shredded imitation crab here in these rolls in Denver?). Other rolls we tried were alright, nothing special. I wasn't as big of a fan of the sukiyaki we ordered, it wasn't served steaming hot as it usually is, so the dish cooled down pretty quickly and was lukewarm by the time we finished. Service was not bad considering it was so busy. It definitely helped that other members of the staff were able to assist with ordering. For what it is, Sushi Den is pretty good, but I'll only come back to eat their more unique food items. read more

We had a reservation for Saturday night which seemed to be necessary because they were busy. I came here with the intention of making my own $100 dollar omakase menu since. We ordered appetizers, nigiris and rolls. Everything was super fresh and delicious. My favorites were the grilled squid, dynamite, amaebi roll, lychee ice cream, and the Belgian chocolate cake. They were out of the uni but i usually love it. If you're ordering edamame, I'd ask for it spicy, which isn't too spicy and adds a flavorful spin. Street paid parking (2 hour limit) is hard to find during peak hours but valet service is available. The restaurant's interior is comfortable, clean, and upscale and can accommodate large groups. There was a line to the outside on a Monday night. There are a lot of restaurants and shops around the area that it'll be fun to explore if you're waiting. Their selection of wine is great and they select a few to recommend that pairs well with seafood. Their Japanese whisky stock is also pleasing for those who enjoy whisky. read more

I have been to sushi den multiple times for the past ten years and always had a great experience. But I went recently again and was disgusted. The chef kept wiping the pieces of sushi on his dirty towels that he cleans his hands with. I knew I was gonna get sick eating it but I ate it anyway. It's one one of the places I took out of town guest to, and where I took my staff for dinners. Much has changed over the years. The fish is fresh, presentation is beautiful, and they often have uncommon fish varieties for the palate. I've never in all these years ever had a complaint about the food. The size of the sashimi have gotten smaller, or at least they were on this night. We made reservations a few months ago for a birthday dinner. The place was a zoo (crowded and busy). The greet staff at the door were not very welcoming, and too busy figuring out where to place people, least of all, greet arriving guest with a welcoming appreciation. This is not the Japanese way or custom! My mother is from Japan, and I grew up there, so we know! Having a reservation, we were disappointed with the wait time. We were taken a table in the middle of the back room, versus a unknown wait for a booth. It was loud, we couldn't carry on a conversation in a normal tone. Our service was the biggest let down. Sadly, for the expense of this place, I would give the ambiance and our wait staff an "D". My husband had to fetch them twice. I did once. It took so long just to have our drinks refilled, that we decidend against cocktails or champaigne. The wait between servings lengthly, and decided against ordering more, and elected to stop at another sushi restaurant on the way home. This was not what I was expecting for a birthday dinner. Although our reservation stated so, they never acknowledged a birthday. I don't know if we will ever return for family meals or group business dinners upstairs, however I will fondly remember the wonderful times of the original Sushi Den of the late 80's. What you need to order - BF Toro (fatty tuna) - just melts in your mouth - crispy spicy tuna (like the crispy rice with tuna that's all over the internet now). So much texture and flavor crispy, chewy, spicy, a little sweet. - Osaka style aburi sockeye salmon - sounds like this is their most popular item. It has a smokey flavor and is just melt in your mouth goodness (we would've ordered 2 more) We got some sushi rolls as well. Pricey but flavorful. I like and appreciate uchi but Sushi Den delivers sushi in a way that's easier to understand while still delivering on complex flavors. This might be my new fav upscale sushi place. Izakaya and sushi den are connected - it's the same kitchen and fish and everything. Originally I had heard that izakaya was better but we sat on the sushi den side and everything was spectacular. I recently went to the famous fish market in Tokyo and most of the sushi I tried at Sushi Den in land locked Denver, Colorado, was up to par with the fish market. The items we ordered were the Serrano Sashimi with Himachia, Bluefin Akami Zuke (Spain), Copper River Salmon, Kurodai, Rainbow Roll, New Style Salmon Roll, Spicy Aburia Toro (Croatia), Umeiro, Toro (Croatia), and Lobster Tempura. Everything was extremely tasty - some rolls with many different flavors that complimented one another, & other nigiri sushi that were simple and perfect. My favorite items were definitely the Spicy Aburia Toro, the Toro, the Copper River Salmon, and the Serrano Sashimi. All in all, it is a delicious 5 star restaurant with amazing selection, fair pricing for the quality you get, and the service was on point all around. Go here now! read more
