Due to the pandemic, Sushi Don has completely reinvented its business model. They have removed seating in order to install refrigerated cases to sell sushi to go - they call it Grab and Go. There is still a small amount of seating. There is a bar down the middle of the space with counter stools and a few tables along the windows. The tables are the only remnant of the pre-Covid dining room. The concept is exactly what it says. You go to the cases, choose your sushi rolls, sides and drink, and pay at the front counter. I used to love this place when we lived in Lafayette. After the pandemic, the quality has gone down. I was craving a bibimpap, and we got something that looks and tastes nothing like it. It was a mix of transparent noodles, some Italian rice, lettuce and some weird meat on top. It didn't come with the egg, the side veggies, or the hot sauce that usually is a key component of the bibimpap. I would not recommend for hot meals. The ready made sushi was ok. read more

Not sure if this place is good for large groups because it didn't seem like they had big tables or a lot of extra space. I have now been here on three different days for lunch. The first time I only ordered 1 roll and did not have an opportunity to truly experience the food. The second visit I ordered the you pick to sushi rolls and that was a much better experience. The third visit was awesome partly due to the special of half off your lunch order so I had four rolls and they were all delish! This place is definitely "Americanized" sushi with a Japanese foundation but everything I ordered was tasty and I would definitely come back! It is hard to find some of the seafood choices and menu choices in this small town, but Sushi Don offers it and more. I am really disappointed. I previously gave Sushi Don a higher review because I really like this place. It's been a staple takeout place for me and my husband. However, I ordered the soy garlic chicken wings via GrubHub (through Yelp...) and got to the bottom of the pan and noticed some things that could have been just large chunks of garlic but they were peanuts. I have a peanut allergy (see note 1)The peanuts were not listed on the GrubHub menu or the menu pictures on Yelp that were added by the business owner. I called the restaurant just minutes ago. The person on the phone was friendly but a little flustered (which I understand. I didn't like being a "Karen" and it sucks to serve one too). He sympathized, having a nut allergy himself, and told me that he would try to contact the right people to get things updated and would make a note to give me free wings the next time I come. He also informed me that the pictures on Yelp have been outdated for months (see note 2) which is...not an excuse but explains how I got myself into my little conundrum. Notes: 1. I understand that people may wonder why I didn't ask beforehand. My allergy is not severe, so I tend not to ask. Generally, I hope and expect people to keep that important information on their menu. Usually that's enough...I am going to get a bad eczema flare, that is for sure. 2. My previous review recounted a different incident with the outdated menu. This was in either the spring or early summer. While I'm sure some would say I should have been wiser and checked the menu again, it is the business' responsibility to keep that up to date. My favorite sushi place in the Lafayette area! I only come during happy hour for 1/2 off rolls so it is cheap and delicious! My favorite combo. If you come during HH, come as soon as you can because the wait can be up to 2 hours long. I come early and get seated right away. If you play smart, you can get 2 rolls for under $10. Sometimes I go sushi crazy with my boyfriend we get 5 special rolls and it comes out to $40 but still cheap considering we leave with leftovers and we get the more expensive rolls. I highly recommend super OMG and salmon avalanche. Those are my 2 go to rolls. read more

Good sushi and local spot. It's small inside so if you go during lunch or dinner times you may have to wait for a table. They now have grab and go for most of their rolls but they will make you something if it isn't out. I recommended the 007, Bond girl, crazy horse, spicy crazy, lobster roll & spicy hamachi. I am quite disappointed with my service experience here at Sushi Don. I was visiting from out of town and my friends had mentioned that I try this sushi place, Sushi Don. They've only had good experiences here and I was excited to try. Walking in, there was a very crowded waiting area and my friends and I walked to the "please wait to be seated sign" and waited patiently. 20 minutes passed and we haven't been greeted once by the host. We noticed that people who had arrived after us, were already getting seated. We were confused and had thought they had reservations but politely asked the host when we were next to get seated. He replied very short and with attitude, telling us that we had to wait and told us we should've checked in earlier. We never knew to check in because we were never told to, despite making eye contact multiple times with the host. We ended up waiting almost an hour to be seated, to which the host just cocked his head at us to follow him and didn't say a word when we sat down. He threw the menus down on the table and walked away briskly. We were upset by the host and his unprofessionalism but wanted to keep positive. Our waiter, on the other hand, was SO SO SO nice and amazing. Even though he was busy running to so many tables, he was very polite and genuinely wanted to make sure our experience was a good one. We ordered 6 rolls to share off the happy hour menu (50% off rolls). The sushi had pretty good flavor (although some tasted the same even though they were different rolls) and was decent for the price. Ended up paying around $13 each person (3 people total). Next time coming here, I plan to steer away from the very rude host. But I did enjoy the food and our waiter so maybe we'll try this place again when we come to visit. read more

Tonight was unacceptable. I spent $37 on a very disappointing experience. This was delivered, so maybe that had something to do with it. First- Heart Attack, normally delicious was under cooked and not spicy. California Roll was good and only because of the seeds on top. I spent $15 on the Grand Canyon Roll and it arrived all in a pile in a bowl. Flavor was great but it came apart and it was a mess. No scallops to be found. Last time I do delivery with Sushi Don. We had the Lion King and Bond girl roll and I can easily say this is the best sushi I've ever had! They have sushi and alcohol specials throughout the week so it's worth checking out the deals. I love that the rolls cane with miso soup and salad, with my favorite ginger dressing. We had the peanut boneless chicken as an appetizer and it was obvious why it's the most popular. I have a love hate with this place. Location - great. Easy to get to and plenty of parking. Based on all the reviews I've read, this place was much better pre-pandemic. I REALLY wish they would go back to regular service. I came here for the first time for a work dinner and we didn't know it was grab and go which make for a very awkward experience. I overheard a server telling someone that walked in that they kept with this model because people would have to wait for tables and there would be long lines. THE PEOPLE WILL WAIT FOR GOOD FOOD!! I really think their business has gone down l. If they had lines before, they certainly don't now (however I did see a few take outs). I think the sushi would be better if it was not grab and go. It's just off, and not "dining". The sushi choices are good and the hot food is really good, but you always wonder how long things have been sitting. Have eaten here multiple times and always a good time. I believe that it's the best place in the Lafayette area for price and quality. Service has always been above average to great. My wife, who is a picky eater, can find plenty to eat on the menu. They have a good selection of non-sushi items and Korean BBQ. We are always pleased with their rolls, salad and soups. I was here last year and loved the place! Casual restaurant with great lunch specials. Well, they've turned it into a store. The sushi is made in the morning and not just for you. Might as well go to the grocery and get it. Packaged in plastic trays. Help yourself and sit at a table. Might as well eat at a grocery. It's now fast food. Got the Sushi Don bowl and threw it away. $16 and threw it away. The crab had a very weird texture, and I eat sushi up and down the East Coast 3+ times a week. Same crab everyone else has, I'm sure, so must be the way he cuts it. The texture is way off. Soooooooooo much sugar in the crab and rice. Disgusting. Can get a bit crowded on the happy hour days with long waits, so either come early or wait it out, but they've been getting really efficient with notifying customers when their table is ready, and the food is worth the wait! Tuna Meets Salmon is my favorite roll, but there are many great options like Spicy Crazy and Crab Rangoon. Love the portion sizes, and I like how they re-purposed the old IHOP. The thing is, I don't think they're flavors are always spot on when it comes to Asian food. But at the same time, I've come in large groups of people, and I have some friends not as used to Asian food that love it. So considering the location, I'm not going to hammer about the flavors not always being spot on. Because whatever the case is, the food still has dimensions in terms of flavor and the EXECUTION (actual cooking) is done well. I actually find that I prefer them to Yummy Time. While Yummy Time's pork belly is burnt and dry, Sushi Don's pork belly is just spot on. Actually, ALL THE BBQ OPTIONS HERE ARE DELICIOUS. Additionally, I love how there are more options than just galbi and bulgogi. If you go, I encourage you to try them all out. But the sheer amount of options blend both familiar items as well as options you don't see as often in the area. Prices are fair (actually, they're pretty cheap) considering the amount of food you get. My first two times, we had excellent wait staff. They were really considerate and friendly. The last time I went, I didn't pay as much attention because I was feeling unwell but needed to go with my seminar group, but they handled the giant group of 20+ people really well. So yeah, the place is great for large, casual groups. EDIT: I should mention, the 20+ person thing was my martial arts club having a training seminar with a guest speaker. We only decided on Sushi Don after we finished and were basically walk ins. So again, kudos to the staff for handling the whole lot of us, plus the kids, just dropping by sweaty and most still in their training uniforms. 2nd EDIT: For STUDENTS or FACULTY that don't have cars, this may change (because CityBus ARRRRGGHH), but if you sit on the 4B and riding on it when it switches to 4A, you'll eventually get there. It's only a few stops before the Tippecanoe Mall. You'll know you're there when you spot the green roofed building and the Starbucks. I've been here several times, and each time I walk away satisfied. The rolls are fun and tasty, and are usually well made. I say usually because during their busier hours, like their half price sushi roll times, they get a little sloppy and some of the rolls are falling apart upon arrival. However, it doesn't happen for each roll, and when they're cranking out that many rolls that quickly, some mistakes are bound to slip by. The flavor is the same - just the presentation suffers a bit. Best sushi place in town, and surprising quality for central Indiana. Their bulgogi ramen is some of the best ramen I have ever had. Their Nigiri game is on point ( especially their Tuna) and their rolls (which let's be honest are good at most places) were perfect.
