On New Year's day, every other sushi place in town was closed, so we decided to give this place a try. It had a line out the door when we drove by, which usually indicated a restaurant that is in demand because of good food, and an overall good experience. I walked up to ask how long it would be for a table. It took at least 5 minutes for anyone to even notice me standing there to ask how long the wait would be for a party of 5. When one of the waitresses finally did ask, she pulled a 'Reserved' sign off of a table and seated us right away. That was the fastest part of the dinner experience. It took at least 10 minutes after we were seated for anyone to take our order, and then we waited at least 45 minutes to get our food. We had neither a complicated order, nor a larger order. What we had was a group of hangry people, with 2 hangry kids who waited 45 minutes for average sushi. It wasn't great, it wasn't bad, but the exceptionally long wait to get our food really spoiled the whole experience. read more

Went to friends' house for the Hawaii Warrior homecoming game and was treated to the 30-piece variety sushi platter.....ONO and definitely worth checking out again sometime soon....the bonus was the dessert, also from Ebisuya....A green cheese cake.... I enjoyed this place. The seating was weird but the sushi was decent. The price was fair but had no kid menu. The customer service was ok. The position of the bathrooms are weird but at least they have one. The flavors of the sushi were refreshing. They were not just raw fish and rice. They have interesting flavor combinations. Not to sound bougie here, but I've been to a variety of sushi restaurants spanning from your neighborhood hole-in-the-wall take-out to some illustrious, world renowned sushi restaurants. I must say that Sushi Ebisuya is pretty good! I love that it's BYOB (hit up Kadota's for that sake or Hitachino) and a little hole in the wall. The building itself has that old Hilo Town charm with wooden swing door action. There were portable ACs when we went and it was cool enough on a hot summer night. It's also tastefully decorated in a bright, cheery, contemporary manner. Very inviting! We ordered the sashimi, nigiri sushi combo (26pcs), Akebono roll, and then MORE nigiri (ahi, hamachi, salmon....cause it was so good the first time around). Super fresh. If you don't want wasabi on your nigiri, you better let them know. They add a smidge of it, but it's not super overpowering. Just enough for you to get that little "wasabi high" and clear your sinuses so that you can really taste and feel the texture of the fish. The other half usually can't do hot or spicy, but the second round of nigiri (because at that point we learned after devouring the 26pc that the nigiri would have the same touch of wasabi on it) he didn't even bother to order the wasabi on the side. Then we had dessert---the vanilla mille crepe cake. Nothing special. Crepe layers are light, vanilla cream was heavy. Not sweet at all, so it was a good finish to dinner. Maybe they could jazz it up with some raspberry or chocolate syrup? Fresh local fruit that's in season? Otherwise it's just a piece of cake.....on a plate....no garnish. Ebisuya is a cute, small restaurant with excellent tasting food but a small menu. The sesame dressing on their salad is the best I've ever had. The miso soup and cold barley tea is excellent. Has a few vegetarian/vegan options. Great mellow lunch/dinner spot and very reasonably priced. BYOB. read more

My husband and I were hesitant to come here at first with so many other places to choose from on our visit Hilo, but after one bite it was clear we had made the right choice. The sushi was excellent. Hands down the best sushi restaurant in town but, the service here sucks. If it weren't for the rude "gentleman" that worked there I've rate this place 5 stars. We simply asked the waitress if my group of friends and I could do separate checks, easy. She said yes and proceeded with our order. When we received our checks, the GUY (owner or other waiter I guess) specially came and told us that they don't do separate checks on the weekends, when they're busy. Don't tell us that you don't do separate checks, TELL YOUR WAITRESS TO GET HER INFO CORRECT. I understand that you're busy, but what's so damn hard about ringing 4 people up separately? And let me tell you, it was around 5:30pm with 2 other parties in there. So "busy" right. My friends and I also have received terrible service multiple times here. But we keep coming back because it's one of the best and cheapest restaurants in hilo! I love this place, and I'll continue coming back. But, id love it even more if the service was a bit better. read more

Wife and I go here about twice a month or more. In my opinion, once you factor in price and quality, it's the best sushi place in town. Our favorites are the trainwreck and the crunchy California rolls. My favorite place to eat sushi in Hilo. They aren't the fasted so I always give myself an hour and a half when I go. The rolls are simple but always super tasty. Every time I go I usually get four rolls and it's always less than $20 which is so awesome. I suggest making a reservation if you go on the weekend, you don't want to get turned away. Ebisuya Sushi is a wonderful mom-and-pop restaurant right in the middle of a busy strip of restaurants/bars/etc (relative to Hilo standards of busyness). We arrived for dinner and immediately noticed the Hawaiian - Asian blended decor. There was a quietly relaxing yet upbeat vibe to the restaurant which was complimented by its BYOB flexibility. Pairing sake, beer, or wine to Sushi can end up being quite an expensive meal, so it was refreshing to have the opportunity to BYOB. The food was absolutely delicious and very very reasonably priced for Sushi. We opted to enjoy 7 various rolls with the price total at 30 dollars. The waitress was very friendly and offered great opinions on the chef's best options for the night. Note: The Volcano Dragon roll was super ono! Tempura shrimp roll topped with a generous portion of spicy ahi poke!! I wish I lived here just for this place!! We stopped here after hiking at the volcano park, starving and cranky and dirty. This place is so casual, no AC, but byob! ! What? We walked to the market at the next corner and brought our own beers in to enjoy. The service was a little slow that night but one girl covered the whole restaurant plus take out. Poor girl. 2 sushi chefs made all the orders. The rolls were so fresh tasting and unbelievably cheap! The kids loved their teriyaki chicken rolls and miso soup. I would be here every other day if I lived nearby. You couldn't make this food for less than they charge. I can't even remember what we paid, next to nothing. Being in Hilo on a Sunday - very little choice on restaurant. Food is ok here, but slightly expensive for the portion. Miso soup is too salty. Ordered Chirashi. Fish is fresh, but the slice is too thin. Egg in the Chirashi is normally an indicator on the authenticity and the skill of the chef. Unfortunately, this one is obviously not that good - pretty cheaply made. Their tempura seems to be better. read more

Small place with tasty sushi. You can bring booze from KTA down the street. After dealing with slow grumpy tattoo's gal waitress for years at Ocean, it's nice to have a pleasant waiter or waitress. The sushi is perhaps, in my opinion, better than Ocean, and almost as good as Kompai, but quite a bit cheaper! Amazing!!! Serve excellent, super nice! Didn't catch the guys name :( We had a wheelchair and they were quick and accommodating to help us in since the place is pretty small.
