Charashi bowl is so small for the price, not worth it. I don't know why they don't add more fish, instead they add so much rice to make it look fuller. All that is left is rice after eating the fish. Best roll: Volcano dragon First time I tried this place, it was the BEST sushi Ive ever had in my life. The flavors were excellent and the sushi was a good price. This place is my favorite sushi place ever! Incredibly affordable and the quality is amazing. Sometimes you have to wait for awhile but it is so worth the wait. The service is always amazing. My suggestion? If you're going for lunch get the 3 roll special, it comes with miso soup and is so good. If you're doing dinner get the special that comes with 5 different rolls. I can eat it alone with enough motivation, but you can also share if you feel like it. I am not kidding when I say this is the best place to get sushi on the island. Solid sushi that varies somewhat in quality and service. We ordered piecemeal rather than the combo plates (which seemed to be very popular, and a great bargain; I think that may be a better way to go) - the yellowtail was quite bland and meh, yet the other rolls we got (a variety of shrimp tempura, dragon roll, volcano roll, nigiri sushi as well) were excellent. The price is basically unbeatable - we spent about $20-$25 for 4 rolls, some nigiri, 2 orders of miso soup, a seaweed salad, and those tasty little tofu roll things. Service was friendly and attentive; however it took a loooooong time for our sushi to come out. Three groups of people who came in after us, and who were seated and who ordered AFTER us were served their large orders prior to us being served, which I thought pretty strange as we continued to sit there and wait. The couple to our right was nearly done with their food by the time we were actually served ours, despite them being seated and ordering ten or fifteen minutes after us. Also, not a big deal, but I asked if my husband and I could sit in one of the cozier side booths (there were about three remaining), and was told no, that they were for bigger groups - however, about 15 minutes later a sole single person was seated in one despite other tables being available. A little weird I suppose. The restaurant is overall clean and tidy, with some dated decor and no central A/C (we came when it was cool out, and so this wasn't a problem at all). Anyway, Sushi Ebisuya is a great deal of fresh, decent sushi for your money, and I would still recommend, although wouldn't recommend having the highest expectations for a top-notch sushi establishment. read more

My cousin and I shares the sushi combo (26 piece). We were able to request more salmon nigiri in place of the ebi nigiri. Everything tasted fresh and it was almost the right amount of food for the two of us! We ended up ordering an alaska roll, but requested the "volcano" version. Thinking about how we were off to volcano national park the next day, we felt we had to get this roll to hype us up ! This place is a great example of why you should not judge a book by its cover. The outside of the restaurant is simple and you could even say run down a bit. The parking situation is not ideal, however you should be able to find parking on the street. Me and my wife went for dinner on a Saturday night and were seated immediately. The waitress was extremely nice and helped us out with picking a few of there specialities. We got there salmon avocado, tuna avocado, "train wreck" and Maui Waui. One of the best "bang for your buck" sushi places that I've been to. Location: Sushi Ebisuya is located across the street from Lucy's Taqueria in downtown Hilo on Kilauea Ave between Ben Franklin and Downtown KTA. The space is a small hole in the wall with maybe a dozen tables or so and an open-air sushi bar. There is no private parking lot, so park on the street. My family visited on a Saturday during lunch, so downtown was packed, and we had to compete with the farmers market and tourists for parking. Food: The food was great! There is a combo of three rolls of sushi with a bowl of miso soup for only $10.99. I ordered the Alaska roll (with salmon), California roll, and a dragon roll, which has shrimp tempura inside. The rice had just the right texture so that it wasn't mushy, but also so that the roll didn't fall apart in your hands. The salmon tasted very fresh, and the shrimp tempura was crispy, but not soggy. We shared a mocha cheesecake, which was decadent with a dense and creamy texture, but the serving felt small for $3.99. Service: I have no complaints about the service. There was only one waitress for the whole restaurant, which feels typical for the size, and she was working very hard. We had to ask a few times for a takeout container, which didn't feel like a problem considering how much she was doing. There were three sushi chefs at the bar, so food came out pretty quickly. Some friends that live in the college dorms were there eating together, so you know that the food is good and affordable. My overall assessment of Sushi Ebisuya is that the food is great, and you can't beat the prices. I will definitely visit again and encourage others to try it out as well. read more

An Alaskan(salmon/avocado), California, kona kampachi, spicy tuna & a dragon roll (our fave) we waited a bit after ordering which was fine because we weren't too hungry. The sushi had a beautiful presentation. We were still a bit hungry so we ordered an extra Baja California(classic California with spicy aioli) & a spicy dragon which is the dragon with spicy aioli. Both of these extra rolls were 3.99 ea. Our total came out to be 24.97 including tax. That is pretty good for decent sushi for two. The restaurant interior itself was unbelievably hot and took awhile to get used to at first, which is the only real negative. Our waitress was the only one and hats off to her- she was crushing it - taking and giving a full restaurant's worth of orders and drinks, acting as cashier and hostess. She was just really impressive. My wife and I both really enjoyed the sushi, sashimi and nigiri we had. They immediately made the changes and they even suggested that we pre order to avoid a long wait time. So glad we did. We got our food fairly quick. The only downside was that it got hot inside; there was no AC. BUT the food was good. For the taste, the service, and the price, I think it was worth it! My favorites: hamachi, unagi, ika. They're also open every day for dinner (they were even open on 12/31/16 and 1/1/17). I would recommend the 26-piece combo (3 rolls sliced into 6 pcs each and 2 pcs each of 4 types of nigiri) for $24. It's supposed to be for 2, but in my experience, 2 orders shared by 3 adults have been just about right, or you can eat 1 solo and leave stuffed. If you forget to bring a drink (or run out), there's a KTA supermarket like a minute away on foot (across Mamo St). An unpretentious place that only serves sushi. No extensive Japanese menu, no omakase, and no corkage fee. May have selections like uni at market price. read more

Negative stars! Terrible service! This is our first day family vacation in Hilo. We waited a bit to be seated then were immediately ignored at the table. We asked for tea that was delivered 30 minutes later. I was finally served my miso soup which had a bug floating on top (see picture) which i took a couple of sips of. We waited another 30 minutes to be served 1 of 5 entrees. The other four entrees were still not served after waiting another 30 minutes. So we finally got up and said "don't bother with the rest of the orders since the little food they did deliver was already cold from waiting for the rest to start eating. We ended up leaving without eating anything. The worst part of this experience is the wait staff didn't even care. Completely unapologetic. Just miserable people who clearly hated their jobs.
