My hubby was craving Ikura Nigiri so we decided to give this place a try. The sushi was pretty good - we ordered the salmon, ikura, Hamachi and unagi nigiri. The nigiri is prepared with the wasabi on the rice, which is how I remember it being prepared in Japan. They had a number of vegetarian rolls which was different. Limited selection on the menu. I was looking for some bento options or at least some cooked dishes. Staff is really friendly and polite. Seating is limited - reservations recommended. They already had a number of tables marked reserved when we arrived at about 515pm. read more

This restaurant is really good, just wish it was open from 2 to 330. Those are prime hours.

Well we were looking for great sushi in Hawaii and unfortunately this isn't it. We sat for 50 minutes waiting for our order to come out because apparently they can only process one table at a time. Then they ran out of rice! Let me say that again...a sushi restaurant ran out of rice! We ordered 4 different rolls to try and 1 was good the others were just flavorless. We ordered the assorted sashimi appetizer and the combination plate for two with sushi rolls and nigiri. The fish was good for the area, but not top notch. The nigiri was the weakest of the three preparations where the diner is expected to add wasabi. The cuts on the sashimi were sloppier than the nigiri. The rolls were the surprise of the night. Although dragon and California rolls tend to use everything but the kitchen sink, these rolls were not overblown and had simplicity. The emphasis was creating textures that both popped and had creaminess. Again, on the mild side, the spicy tuna roll wasn't spicy. A popular place where locals call ahead to reserve seating and bring their own alcoholic beverages. A few people had to wait on a Monday night. read more

Visiting a friend here in Hilo and tried to eat here last night. We stood at the doorway for a good five minutes where our presence was not acknowledged. A family who came after us was seated and another party seated themselves. So I went up to the waitress and asked if we were allowed to seat ourselves. She would not make eye contact and said "No you can't, and I'm busy right now." Clearly a message that we weren't wanted. In all my travels around the world I've never been refused service in this manner. And just to be clear we were nicely dressed. My husband is a hospice nurse and I'm an NP that treats diabetes in inner city LA. We have three kids and this was the first day of the first solo vacation we have ever taken alone together. I love going to Ebisuya but, when I took one of my best friend out for a lunch date the waitress / hostess informed me & my friend that there was no room for us to sit & we could not make a reservation since it's "First come, First Serve." we asked if we could make a reservation for later & they told us no & again they couldn't accept any more people for the day when they open at two separate times! I was really disappointed in the fact they didn't want to take care of the customer who was actually outside waiting & then declining service since they were busy. read more

The sushi was nothing to write home about, but it was decent enough, if you're looking for a quick bite to satisfy your craving. The service was good and the wait staff were friendly. Used to love this place but the service seems to have gone done while prices have gone up. We went for lunch, seems every time we go, the 26pc and 30pc sushi special prices have been raised at least a dollar or two. The menu was a lot smaller than the last time as well. It took over an hour for 5 rolls (4 of which were the same roll). They were busy but it seemed like everyone else was served before us even if they had come in after we had. We brought family who were visiting from the mainland and were a bit embarrassed by the end. It was a bummer. read more

This is, so far, our favorite sushi place in Hilo. The menu is smallish but the sushi is very well made for this town. Fair warning, if you're used to sushi on the West coast you may be disappointed. But it stands up well to East coast places. Bring beer or sake, they don't have a liquor license. We usually get a variety of rolls and some sashimi. Ahi seems to dominate the menu, of course. But the yellow tail is usually very good, also the salmon. Our favorite is usually the eel. If it's busy, service can be a bit slow but it's a hopping place so you can always chat with the people sitting REALLY CLOSE to you. Bring lots of aloha and you'll enjoy the atmosphere. read more

Excellent service doesn't begin to describe this establishment. Our party placed a extremely large order as it was to provide for 18 Soldiers. Some places would refuse such a large order but they actually temporarily shut down take out orders to accommodate and make our food in a timely manner. Our intent with such a large order was not to be selfish and deprive possible customers but they provided us excellent food with their excellent customer service. Prices were reasonable and done in a timely manner given how large the order was. 5/5 would recommend to anyone. Will be eating here again. read more

Waitress was awful and clueless. Think it her first day. She forgot to put our order in. Waited 30 minute for food. She set tables that still had food crumbs on them instead of wiping them first. She brought us a check after sitting down for 5 minutes when our food took 30 min to come out. I told her "uhm we haven't even gotten our food yet". She just seemed clueless. Here in Hilo we are not known especially for our food service so let's just say I'm use to subpar service at restaurants. That being said, at least bad service is having some kind of service. We waited 2 hours after being seated for the food we ordered. Our order was not that complex, just three sushi rolls. In that time waiting (wasted), our server came to our table with the wrong order and served two parties food that came in after us. I spent my time sipping on my now diluted, warm soda and envied my dog Pete who I fed a couple hours ago. No food came to our table. We finally got up and left. I made a Yelp account just to post this review. I would give this restaurant 0 stars if I could I am never coming to Ebisuya again and will continue to spread the word of this day. read more

I'll start with what I like about Ebisuya: good selection of fresh fish. I got to try abalone for the first time. We also ordered kampachi, saba, maguro, and a few of the specialty rolls (I really like the one that's topped with poke!). I was pretty impressed with the quality. The staff were friendly, too. The place is cute, clean, and welcoming. Here's what I didn't like: the rolls are so small, and even the nigiri don't come with much rice, so you have to order a lot to feel like you had a good meal. While the rolls are on the cheaper side, I suspect it's because you would need to order 2-3 rolls to get the same amount of food you might get at another sushi restaurant. The staff also informed me that they were out of miso soup, which is a necessity for me when having sushi. While I enjoyed my dinner, I left feeling a little hungry... so this might not be the best place to go if you are famished or, like me, just have a large appetite. read more

The only reason it gets one star is because I can't give less. OK, don't get me wrong. Food is decent and affordable but honestly don't see much difference from Genki Sushi. Not amazing sushi like I was expecting. The worst part was the wait. Took almost an hour to get food and it wasn't busy. Service: friendly but not empathetic for the wait. Rice: not great. Very normal. No rice vinegar flavor. Wrong order: after waiting almost an hour we got the wrong items. The sushi chef brought over and apologized and did not charge for one item. That was nice but we had to ask for that. Grand finale: waitress decided to go medieval on a Gecko next to our table. She stomped on it smashing it on the ground. WOW. Not acceptable in a food establishment. I sure hope it wasn't chopped up and used as sushi. It was disgusting and completely ruined the meal. We were so excited to try this new place in Hilo but looks like it will be our last time there. read more

Omakase (15 piece nigiri) at the new Hilo sushi spot. I'm not sure if it's just that my taste buds have been used to Takenoko Sushi for such a long time, but everything was extremely subpar. As the plate came out, I instantly was off put by how it looked. All the nigiri was at room temperature to warm and the pieces all looked like they had been out for a long time, dry and unappetizing. Uni warmish on semi-hard rice was hard to swallow. We were the first persons seated at 11am, so it couldn't have been that they were busy. None of the selections had any real distinct taste or flavor, just texture. Some were chewy, that aren't meant to be. The waitress couldn't tell us what the nigiri brought to us were and went back to the sushi chef and returned still not able to say what they were. I also had the clam miso soup which is served in the typical small miso bowl. There were bits of broken clam shells in it and sand sediment in the broth. The prices here are cheap, but that reflected in the food. As for the ambiance, I like the decor and tables. You definitely got a different feel walking into the place versus how it looked from the street. The wall seating are a little high versus the chairs that adjoin the table. They were playing reggae music during the entire lunch, which didn't go with the meal. Unless I hear better reviews, I'll probably stick to my monthly reservations at Takenoko Sushi to get my sushi fix. I'd rather spend $30 on memorable food and atmosphere. read more

I've been to ebisuya several times and I love it so much. they're usually super busy so we try to plan for when they aren't as busy. I've been a couple times when they're packed and it takes really long time because there is only two sushi chefs. but the rolls are amazing. there's six pieces with every roll and the most expensive roll is $8.99? most averaging in the $4 range. I usually get four rolls and it's about $15. the service is always friendly and attentive. they are also BYOB, so a bottle of wine with sushi makes for a perfect (and affordable) date night. read more

Found this restaurant (kind of hidden) on our way back to the Hilton in kona. First off, I guess I've been quite spoiled with sushi, I've been to the very best. This restaurant is great though in terms of customer service, and the pricing! We spent 50$ for two people and for the same amount we ate, it would've cost us 700$ at Nobu. It has a relaxed vibe. You can bring your own beer which isn't very common, or at least they I've seen. If you're looking for a down to earth place with good quick sushi this is a good spot. read more

Since moving to Hilo, I've been trying to find a local sushi restaurant that has both affordable, quality food and a pleasing ambiance. Ebisuya is the place I have been looking for. The food is excellent and presentation is beautifully balanced, the hallmark of a true master sushi chef. Unlike the other sushi restaurant up the street, the staff at Ebisuya is friendly and warm. There is an ever so slight edge of nervous energy but keep in mind that as a new restaurant the ease of familiarity will take some time to develop. I expect that as word gets out, it will be difficult to get a table so get in on a great thing now. Note: At present, the restaurant is BYOB with no corkage fees. read more

It was HORRIBLE. After 2 years I figured I give this place another try. Well...Waited over 1.5 hours for our orders AND they still managed to mess it up. We understand it's busy, but it's nowhere near worth the wait. We didn't get one of the rolls but the chef insisted that he had made it and sent it out...twice. I mean, do they think we were trying to steal a $4 sushi roll from them?? It was a chicken teriyaki roll that was missing and we were pretty damn sure we didn't eat anything chicken OR teriyaki in it. Also ordered something that supposed to have cilantro in it..Never got any hint of that either. Maybe the waitress didn't know what the heck she was serving us?? She didn't seem to remember hence having to run back to the chef to ask every time. Yes this place has cheap sushi but you get what you pay for. Good luck. read more

The first time came was due to lots of people posting about it. There's usually somewhere to sit since it's still new to the area. Bad parking tho. We got seated and it took the waiter at least 10-15 mins to come back and check if we were ready to order, although our food came out fast. And it was delicious! The second time we came we sat at the bar. They had tables reserved for a few parties. Not somewhere if like to sit but it had to do. Because of the wait last time I asked the lady if I could order already. She gave us our drinks went to get the straw and took our order. It was busy so we did wait long for our food. I do enjoy this restaurant but the only thing that really bothered me was that we sat at a bar and all our food came out on one big plate?? How are we suppose to share if we're sitting side by side? Our orders got mixed up and I didn't even get to eat what I ordered. Next time I recommend sitting at a table and calling in reservations. read more
