We have always enjoyed our trips to Sushi House in the past, but last night was an exception. Most of the food was up to its usual amazing quality, but the tempura shrimp appetizer tasted like it was fried in old grease and the smaller items were way overdone and tasted burnt. And the only desert available was lava cake - no mochi ice cream, but by the time we asked about desert, we really did not feel welcomed. Here is why. The thing that was annoying and uncomfortable was the feeling of being rushed and that we were keeping everyone there. We showed up at 9pm and immediately felt like we were putting everyone out. We even felt the need to reconfirm that the closing time was 10pm. People were trying to take our plates before we were finished. Waitstaff were saying they had completed their closing to the person who must have been the manager where we could hear it. When we advised the server that we did not want any more sushi, she turned at our table and yelled back to the sushi bar "no". Plates were being restocked noisily right behind us. All of this well before the 10pm closing time. This was a birthday celebration that we had hoped to relax and enjoy believing we had an hour to settle in. From the time we sat down we were given the impression that everybody could not wait until we left. This is unfortunate, since, in the past, we have enjoyed the food and the welcoming atmosphere. We decided to come to Sushi House because of the later closing time. My opinion is if the closing time is 10pm, diners should feel welcomed until that time. We did not. read more

We came around 2pm on a Friday and I was pleasantly surprised to see lunch specials go until 3pm! We ordered the black crispy rice with salmon and seaweed salad to share. The salad was a little oily. Our group of 6 people squeezed into the front window cubby. Natural lighting was cheerful. The overall vibe of the Japanese decor was pleasing and soothing. Food came out slowly due to short staffed but it was fine since we were not in hurry, We had ordered 6 different rolls to share. All of them were good. What an absolutely spectacular sushi spot! Yes, they have more than sushi, but their sushi is what really stole the show for me. Located on a popping street in downtown Oak Park, Sushi House is a medium-sized restaurant that serves up both classic and unique sushi rolls along with other noodle dishes, apps, and drinks (they have tons of martinis). The staff here was super nice; they seemed a bit short-staffed and even with that, they were attentive and kind. The restaurant itself is cozy with Japanese style decor. I loved it! So serene, cute, and clean. There's street parking where you can pay to park (super cheap) otherwise I'm sure there's a public parking garage somewhere nearby. Now onto the sushi - this was the best part. Our sushi rolls were all 10/10, we were obsessed. We got the Wild Roll, 2011 roll, 2021 roll, and Forbidden City roll. Everything was SO fresh, beautifully presented, and just tasted delicious. It was also our first time trying black rice which we really liked. The 2021 roll was so refreshing with mango and the special sauce they used with the roll. The Wild roll was perfectly coated in its toppings, same with the other rolls. Truly have nothing bad to say about the sushi it was just fantastic. And for how these rolls were, I was expecting them to be pretty expensive but this is actually an affordable sushi restaurant. I wish we tried some of their martinis since they had such unique creations - that'll be on the list for next time! Would 100% come here again. Loved my experience here! read more

This is literally my favorite restaurant in Oak Park and I almost eat there every time I'm in the neighborhood! I've been so many times and I can't believe I've never posted a review. I usually get the fried rice and the Fire Dragon Roll. I also love the Baja Roll and the Fuji Yama Roll. We visited Sushi House in Oak Park on Saturday after making a reservation for a Tea Room several hours earlier, which I confirmed before getting off the phone. We walked there, expecting a pleasant evening, but when we arrived both Tea Rooms were full and our reservation was not marked correctly. The staff member who had taken the reservation became defensive and aggressive instead of working to resolve the mistake, even continuing to speak to me after I had asked her to stop while I was trying to address the situation with someone else. Later, I learned that another staff member who became involved was the manager, but she did not step in in a meaningful way to de-escalate. While she was polite when I spoke with her afterward, the handling of the situation left us feeling unsafe and unwelcome in a restaurant we've previously enjoyed many times for both the service and the food. I was shopping around in Oak Park and sushi is my favorite so I saw this place and stopped. I can tell you highly recommend. I wasn't expecting for the sushi to take good but it was great. They have a lot of variety signature rolls. I had the angry crab which had a kick of spicy delicious and the usual Godzilla just to play it safe and both were very tasty. In additional, I had one teriyaki chicken and the plates could be shareable. I also ordered drinks the side car and Asian pear martinis, wow! I enjoyed this place. They have a private "kissing booth" it's called where you can eat and the doors closed for a more intimate dinner. I didn't do it but it seems like something I'll do next time. I really enjoyed my lunch here. Solid sushi spot Downtown Oak Park that's been there for a long time. I ordered the Eel dragon roll and the shrimp tempura and while I enjoyed both rolls the Eel they topped the dragon roll with was raw which I don't like. I possibly didn't pay attention to that part when ordering that particular roll, but I do think they should note that bigger on the menu or with an asterisk because everyone doesn't do raw. The star of the show I must admit was the pear martini..lol! It was so good and so potent, which I appreciate when ordering a cocktail. Service was attentive and my rolls came out quick, no long wait at all. Cute location with plenty of seating. Next time I will ask to sit in the window. They have some great drinks on the menu which we did not order this time but have in the past. I wish they had some flavor options for the edamame, its always something i look for in my favorite sushi spots. Everything else was fantastic. We were both extremely impressed with our rolls. We have never seen a Mexican roll before and it was amazing. I love that there are a few vegetarian options other than just cucumber or avocado. The biggest problem though is the disorganized messy restaurant. The sushi bar was filled with cardboard boxes of extra supplies, it looked like a kitchen nightmare. Ordered online in the afternoon, but when I got there, unfortunately, they were slammed with orders and forgot mine. But! They were quick to rectify the mistake and I got it within minutes, so I appreciated their ability to acknowledge and fix their mistake. I got the Fuji Yama roll, which I was a bit disappointed when it came with only five pieces. They did have a tablespoons' worth of spicy tuna on each of the pieces of sushi, so I guess it evened out. Except, it just made it wildly difficult to eat it in one piece. It was pretty good though! Also got two pieces of nigiri, which were also good.
