Growing up, my parents and I had countless Chinese food takeout orders from here, and as I got older, I continued the tradition with my own family. Even after moving 25 miles away, I still make my way back. Now I'm coming here for lunch with my mom, my daughter, and my grandkid. At this point, New Star has officially become a generational restaurant for our family! Over all these years, the service, food, and atmosphere have always been pleasant and welcoming. There's something special about being able to return to a restaurant you've enjoyed since childhood and now share it with the next generations of your family. I haven't tried the hibachi yet, but I've heard great things about it, so that's definitely on my list for a future visit. This place is more like 4.5 stars. We always wanted to try this place so slid in to see what was cracking! They have Chinese, Thai & Japanese cuisine along with hibachi service. We were there for some Chinese food. They give you complimentary hot tea when you sit down. The service was ok at best. Nice inside not very big but it's clean and has some cozy booth type seats along with open table seating. We ordered some Jumbo shrimp fried rice, Singapore noodles, pad se eew and a sampler appetizer platter. The appetizer platter came with 2 egg rolls, 2 dumplings, 2 bbq ribs, 2 shrimp toast, 2 crab Rangoons & 2 fried shrimp. The egg rolls were fresh and full of meat!! Very crispy and delicious! 7/10 I didn't have the dumplings I don't care for them myself but my wife likes them she gave them a 6.7/0 she said she's had better. The Ribs had a nice bite and flavor to them just a tad tough for me. 6/10 The shrimp toast was my favorite of the appetizers the were crispy not greasy and the shrimp was definitely there. I enjoyed the flavor of them. 8/10 The crab Rangoon however were a disappointment to me. They were definitely missing the green onion and crab! lol. Mostly cream cheese but fried well 4/10. The fried shrimp were ok. Average 5/10 They give you a lot of food for your money! As all the dishes had a great amount of protein in them! They don't skimp on the meat at all. The jumbo shrimp fried rice a great flavor and nice texture. You can taste smokiness in it. 7.5/10 The Singapore Noodles was loaded with shrimp, chicken and bbq pork, egg and veggies. It had a kick to it from the curry very flavorful and the texture of the noodles were spot on! 7.5/10 the pad se eew was also loaded with beef! (You have the option of protein) the beef was very tender, the sauce had a nice spice level and the noodles were perfectly cooked. 8/10 all in all i would definitely recommend checking them out! I reserved a table for 10 people for my mother's birthday with a 7:00 p.m. reservation. My party arrived at 6:55 p.m., and I asked about our table three different times between 7:00 and 7:30. Each time, I was given a different excuse. First, I was told they were waiting for a table to open up. Then they were waiting on a cook. Finally, a staff member said the people at our reserved table were still eating and they were waiting for them to get up. When I asked when our table would actually be ready, she laughed, threw her hands up, and said she didn't know. What made the situation even worse was watching other customers walk in and be seated while we continued to wait. From what I observed, Black families were waiting extended periods of time, while White and Mexican customers were seated much more quickly. A party of 15 that arrived well after us was even seated before my group. I am deeply disappointed and disgusted by the treatment my family received on my mother's birthday. This would have been her first hibachi experience, and instead it was ruined by poor customer service and what appeared to be unfair treatment. We love New Star and come here for any reason. Every early release school day we try to have lunch here and lately we've been giving hibachi a go since we can get there early and not wait forever. Staff is very efficient and accommodating of the kids' pickiness and we always have a lot to take home. They now include a tip with the meal, so if you pay by card and wonder why the tip options are so low on the machine (3-7%) that is why. I don't blame them because I'm constantly shocked that people don't give the chef a cash tip at the table since he's doing the lion's share and will have to split what the check tip is with the waiter! Looking for a sushi spot on our drive back to the burbs, we came across New Star on yelp. Parking lot is shared with another hot spot of the area - Johnnys beef and hot dogs. There were a couple of people picking up to go orders before us, but then we were seated promptly. Menu is huge! They have traditional dishes as well as sushi. With our order, we were also given hot tea and cucumbers. My sushi roll had a nice kick to it. I ordered the Mongolian beef and it had a good amount of beef and vegetables. Prices were very reasonable as well. Sure, our server did disappear at times, but we got our order in promptly and didn't need much assistance. Definitely recommend this spot. read more

Our initial server was a little pushy at first and tried to get us all to order the item happy couple. The food, even for hibachi, was a bit oily. All the food was cooked at a different time so we eneded up having to eat our entree in shifts. In particular, the veggies came out last and we hardly ate any of those despite trying to eat more balanced in our daily life. The fried rice was done first followed shortly by the noodles so we had a while to eat on them before anything else. On the positive side, it seemed to be a very popular and family friendly restaurant. It was packed with a lot of people and lots of families at that. Despite that, you got a table for a lot of people on short notice very quickly. Our hibachi cook was very friendly, especially to our daughter. He even gave her food even though she didn't order an entree. That being said, there was plenty of food to go around. My wife and I had 4 to go boxes full of food at the end despite having eaten quite a lot already. The portions here are beyond generous. Can I give a negative review? They don't deserve any stars. I used to LOVE this place. Went last week for the first time in a long time. Decided to try the hibachi. DISGUSTING. This is the WORST hibachi I have ever eaten in my life. Swimming in grease. He must have put 2 to 3 pounds of butter on the food. Noodles swimming in grease, golden shrimp which is greasy anyway was covered in butter, the extremely tough filet was full of gristle and yep you guessed it grease! Food has a horrible flavor. Our chef was unfriendly, our server was non friendly and non existent. Then they expect and demand we give them 18%? We ordered a Chinese take out order and they tried to charge another 18%. Came here for my birthday today with some friends and my son. First off. They have a childrens menu!!!! And a crayons to color and a toy! 10 points on a 10 point scale!!! They used to do pictures for the birthday guest. Not sure if our server was new But that wasn't offered and no free dessert other than fortune cookies and almond cookies which they give to everyone. That's good enough for me. I don't think he realized we were celebrating a birthday even though there was a giant birthday balloon!!! Oh well. I love this place. Bustling, busy restaurant at 3:30 on a Saturday afternoon! We were greeted promptly by three different staffers, and our table was ready in a couple of minutes. Clean facility offers Chinese, Hibachi, sushi. The restaurant is much larger than it looks from the outside. Waitstaff promptly provided menus, then returned to take our orders. Pot of tea and water placed on the table. Egg rolls were pretty typical, tasty and crisp. I had beef with broccoli, it was very good, with tender slices of beef and very fresh, tender-crisp broccoli. My companion had beef with lobster sauce and pronounced it good. We also shared BBQ pork fried rice, pretty standard and tasty. Portions, of course, are huge, so staff wrapped the leftovers for us to take home. Fortune cookies and almond cookies were provided, too. Full bar. Street parking. This place keeps coming up as a recommendation whenever someone in the neighborhood starts asking about a good Chinese place so I decided we needed to try it. It was indeed pretty good. They have BBQ pork fried rice, which I don't find terribly often at restaurants around here (or at least not the ones I frequent) and that was quite good. They also have egg fried rice which I find even less and is my favorite. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken and I liked it for the most part. The sweet and sour was really good; sometimes a place makes it way too sweet. The chicken was ok, though the breading was a little thick at times. I would return here, and I probably will... but it's too far away for more than a very occasional trip since it's about 30 minutes away from me. There doesn't seem to be any parking here for the restaurant specifically, but there's street parking... although Johnnie's Beef is a couple doors down so the parking can be pretty competitive around here at times. read more

I really enjoy coming here but word of advice is to make sure your entire party is there; otherwise they won't seat you. It's a nice family ambiance in the front and hibachi is in the back. Heads up...you get enough food for at least 2 days! We ended up doing the happy couple which comes with shrimp, chicken and steak. You also get ice cream as a dessert with this. The food here never disappoints and the portion sizes are huge! Love that you get noodles and rice. The drinks were meh. One person in my party ordered an espresso martini and it came out looking like they just put a bunch of creamer in it. And the mojito just had big ole mint leaves that weren't chopped... As a hibachi, I thought the food at New Star was average. It didn't help that I asked for teriyaki steak, then didn't get teriyaki sauce on the steak! But everything that was prepared during our hibachi session--the chicken fried rice, the vegetables, and the steak--was all fine, nothing memorable. But my kids LOVED watching our hibachi chef go to work. The guy's English was spotty but his artistry was not...and by the time he was dancing with knives, pretend-squirting mustard on my father-in-law, and throwing extra steak bites on my 11-year-old's plate every few minutes, my kids were sold. That means I'm going to have to go back...even if I don't necessarily love the food quality. This much we can agree on, though--you are not leaving New Star hungry. I can't believe I have never reviewed New Star. I've been eating here since I was a kid now I bring my kiddo here. We love it. The portions are plentiful and the food is delicious. Today we tried the hibachi for the first time and we were impressed. My kiddo ordered the shrimp kids meal with noodles and soup (crazy to me noods cost $3 since they're already being made for everyone else) the chef also gave her a scoop of chicken fried rice as well. I ordered the steak and shrimp. It was delicious. I have zero complaints. We also ordered virgin daiquiris. We left feeling content with plenty of leftovers. Came here for our Women's Group celebration for our church. There were about 20-25 of us and we had a semi private room off to the side of the restaurant. The servers were really great and attentive. They came to check in on us every few minutes or so and were very friendly. We ordered several entrees to share per table but the walnut shrimp dish was my favorite along with the chicken satay. They have several dishes available for everyone to order so something for everyone. There is parking available in the lot off to the side or behind the restaurant. I've been coming here a couple of times for dinner once sitting in the Chinese dine in area and mostly my annual birthday I would come here with my family for their amazing hibachi meal. This place does not have its own parking. It's off on a busy street so you would have to park on the street or if you're lucky there are some side parking around the block. Highly recommend to make reservations for this place. It does get very busy during the weekend and it could take up to an hour wait. You know the food is good if people are actually gonna wait that long to sit down and have a meal. Their Chinese food section off their menu is pretty extensive my typical go to is -Chinese egg roll has the cabbage, pork and peanut butter flavors -wonton soup good pieces of wontons, pork and shrimp with vegetables -shrimp fried rice I like baby shrimp in my fried rice which they have here and they don't add peas and carrots in their rice. -Hong Kong steak dish it's a grilled medium rare T-bone steak which is char broiled and we asked for medium rare on top of brown sauce, Chinese vegetables. It was very good. In the hibachi section, it is a bigger room that can fit about 10 people or more per hibachi station. What I like about this place is if you get the combo meal which I get the filet mignon and golden shrimp (this is a chicago thing) you also get hibachi shrimp, soup, Japanese salad, and stir fried vegetables of broccoli, zucchini, carrots, onions, on top of that Japanese style sweet fried rice and lo mein Noodles, you definitely will have a take home carton for that kind of meal. They also have an extensive list of sushi rolls, Maki and sashimi too. They do serve alcohol and fun cocktail drinks too. I had the Buddha drink, which was really strong. Overall, a great place if you want a lively party to enjoy dinner at hibachi area in the chinese area it is pretty calm, not too noisy. The staff is nice and the place is clean. Have you seen a Pat Thai noodle in this reddish color? Before opening the to-go box I was skeptical how red it was. When I tasted it, it did have that sour sweet salty flavor but something was off... yet a very familiar taste that I can't recall in any Asian food with this type of flavor... Few more bites, I got it... it was ketchup flavor! I asked my husband to taste it (without telling him what it tasted like to me, and he is a white boy)... he said same thing! No wonder it was so red Basically it was like experiencing those sweet cheap flavored with ketchup canned spaghetti but with rice noodles. Worse came after this Pat Thai, I could not taste other dishes because this ketchup flavor overpowered my taste buds. I've not had much experience with Thai cuisine, yet I know what a good Pad Thai noodle looks and tastes like. New Star's Chinese has it's own downside, so I was hoping to have better experience with Thai... yet, they can't make the basic signature Thai dish!! I work in Oak Park and I live 45 minutes away. It's really hard to find a good Chinese food place where I'm at. I discovered this place couple years ago And for the most part, the food is good. I really love their egg drop soup and their wonton soup. I am a soup connoisseur And their fried rice. I always look for a darker fried rice I prefer to go there with their lunch specials. You can try a few things without breaking the bank. They are reasonably priced and they're really on point on their carryouts their packaging and their thermal bags to take the food home is one of the best ideas. I've been to New Star three times now. 1st time I got habachi with a big party and it went great! We got sat quickly, food was awesome. The 2 time I ordered to- go and the Chinese restaurant options were incredible. So fresh and yummy. The 3rd time I came to New Star, I went for habachi with my family. It was not a good experience to say the least. We waited 1 hour for our turn (which was fine) but then we were waiting another hour from our estimated seating time. When we got sat for our habachi, the food was completely drowned in butter. Our entire table was commenting on there being too much butter , like literally pools of butter on your plate. I love coming to New star but that habachi experience was pretty insane, disappointing for how much I paid. read more

Took a friend to dinner for her retirement. Two of us got our food while the retiree waited 10 minutes for her food. I ordered the seafood curry dish which was supposed to have shrimp, crab meat and scallops. I had one nickel sized scallop and the rest was shrimp. I asked the waiter if I was given the correct dish. Second family seated received menus immediately. That was my first issue. 15 more minutes not a person in sight came to take drink orders it's now 2.pm. Still sitting at 2:15pm which allows for ordering from the lunch menu. 2:30pm and I finally ask "What are we doing"? Can we get drinks ordered? My thoughts are they wanted to wait until 3pm to get the dinner prices charged. I was not thrilled with this place. The place could do better. I'll never return. Service could be better. I've been eating at this restaurant since 1989 and it's always been a pleasant dining experience. The restaurant is very clean, well lit, well staffed and best of all-the food is spectacular. I have to say it again-the food is spectacular especially the Egg Rolls- absolutely fantastic! The Cho Cho beef and egg rolls were to die for and I'm not even a huge egg roll fan. Plenty of sauces provided and I didn't end up using any because the food was so good by itself.
